Tata Bahasa Daripada aku kau rampok saban bulan, kita cerai saja. Rather than you rob me every month, let’s just divorce. A sentence like this where two personal pronouns follow each other can be confusing, especially as in English you is followed by me and not the other way around as in our example above. Confusing? Not really! You already know structures as the one above: Orang itu kamu telpon. You called that person. Sounds familiar? Yes, it’s in passive voice! When the agent (here kamu) is a first or second person pronoun, passive 2 (the passive without the prefix di-) is required. Remember that we also could have used active voice: Kamu menelpon orang itu. You called that person. As you see, we have used the same translation. The first sentence, which is in passive voice, actually translates as “That person is called by you’ which is grammatically perfectly correct but sounds clumsy in English. Not so in Indonesian! In Indonesian, it solely depends on whether the focus is on ‘orang itu’ or on ‘kamu’. If it is on the agent/doer (kamu), then active voice is used, if it is on the patient/undergoer (orang itu), then passive voice should be used. So when ‘you called that person’ is Orang itu kamu telpon, what is then ‘You called me.’? Naturally, it is Aku kamu telpon.

Latihan 2 Translate the following sentences using object focus (passive type 2). For the pronouns, use a variety of aku, saya (kami, kita) for the first person, and kamu, kau, Anda, Bapak, Ibu (kalian) for the second person. ‘To call’ is menelpon, ‘to pick up’ menjemput, ‘to neglect’ mengabaikan, ‘to wait’ menunggu, ‘to treat s.o.’ memperlakukan, ‘to release s.o.’ membebaskan, ‘to buy sth for someone’ membelikan, ‘to beat up’ menghajar, ‘to read sth for s.o.’ membacakan, ‘to treat s.o.’ mengobati. (Note that for the purpose of this exercise you can, of course, not use the meN- prefix!). The key to the exercise is printed at the end of this document.
I’ll call you later
Nanti…
I unfollow you. (Twitter talk) I’ll pick you up at 8. Don’t you neglect me!
Jangan…
Shall I wait for you guys here?
Apakah…
Do you want me to treat you like that? Sorry, we cannot release you yet. I already bought you that shirt. Watch out, I’ll beat you up. Yesterday I read you guys that book. Wait, I’ll treat you in a moment.
Key to Latihan 2 Nanti Anda saya telpon. Anda saya unfollow. Anda saya jemput jam delapan. Jangan aku kamu abaikan. Apakah kalian saya tunggu di sini? Mau kamu saya perlakukan begitu? Maaf Anda belum bisa kami bebaskan*. Anda sudah saya belikan baju itu.* Awas, kau kuhajar nanti.
Kemarin sudah kalian saya bacakan buku itu. Sabar, sebentar lagi Anda saya obati. * remember the rule that “nothing can be placed between the agent and the passive verb”

Latihan 3 – Tata Bahasa Before doing the following exercises, read the sections on ter-, and -kan in Sneddon's grammar. 1. Is mentertawakan grammatically correct? Discuss. Mentertawakan is a morphologically very complex word as it consists of four morphems: meN-, ter-, tawa, -kan. Mentertawakan is based on tertawa 'to lough', which by itself is based on tawa 'lough'. 2. The prefix ter- is either stative, abilitative, or accidental. In tertawa, what meaning has the prefix ter-? 3. Mentertawakan is based on tertawa. The circumfix me-...-kan can either be causative, beneficial, transitivizing, or optional. Which one is it here? 4. According to the rules of meN- prenasalization, initial p, t and k are lost (e.g. when meN- is added to tulis, it becomes menulis, and NOT *mentulis). Why is it mentertawakan and not menertawakan? Which one is the correct form? Check the KBBI (http://kbbi.web.id or http://badanbahasa.kemdiknas.go.id/kbbi).
