P-39 Airacobra over New Guinea
FIRST, A FEW WORDS The P-39 Airacobra was developed by the Bell Aircraft Corporation in Buffalo, New York in the late 30's. The first XP-39 prototype had its maiden flight on April the 6th, 1939 in Dayton, where it reached a maximum speed of 628km/h at 6100 m, climbing to that height in only 5 minutes. The XP-39 had a very good flight performance, and specifically, good manoeuvrability thanks its original concept of airframe, with its Alison V-1710-17 1150 HP supercharged engine located in its centre of gravity. This engine location also gave the aircraft a long, slim nose well suited for installation of a powerful weapon. The USAAF ordered a test series of 12 YP-39s on April the 27th, but before the series was finished the project was significantly changed. Because of supercharger troubles, the original engine was replaced by a less powerful Alison V-1710-37 without a supercharger, and just 1090 HP. The YP-39 had an engine-axis Oldsmobile T-9 cal. 37mm cannon, two .50 calibre (12.7 mm) machine guns and two .30 calibre (7.62mm) machine guns mounted in the nose. The pilot seat got some armour, but the weight was increased to 3160 kg against 2820kg of the prototype. Because of these changes the maximum speed was decreased to 590 km/h and climb to 6100m now took 7.5 minutes. Although the excellent prototype flight performances were decreased, the Air force didn't loose interest and ordered 80 production P-39Cs. The first 20 of these were supplied as standard P-39Cs and the remaining 60 were finished as P-39Ds, with the two .30 calibre (7.62mm) machine guns moved to the wings and two more .30 calibre (7.62mm) machine guns were added to the same location. The USAAF received its first P-39Ds in February 1941, and the next order for 344 P-39D's was placed at this time. The British RAF ordered 675 P-39's in April 1940. British Airacobra Mk.I's were produced in P-39D standard, but with the engine-axis canon replaced with a British Hispano M1 20mm cannon and the wing machine guns were replaced with 7.7mm Browning's. The first Airacobra Mk.I's were received in July 1941, but the RAF was disappointed, when it was found that they were not suitable for service in the European war theatre. In October 1941 four Mk.I's were tested by 601 Squadron in the ground attack role over occupied France, Airacobras were withdrawn from service and 212 RAF Airacobra Mk.I's were send to Soviet Union. When the USA came into the war, the USAAF confiscated 179 Airacobras from the British order on the production line. They were re-designated P-400, and served in the Pacific. All P-400's have 12 exhaust pipes on each side of the engine, and this was the major difference from the P-39D series. The next block of aircraft, also with 12 exhaust pipes, were 229 aircraft of the P-39F series, and after them came the P-39K series (210 aircraft), P-39L (250 aircraft), P-39M (240 aircraft) and P-39N (2095 aircraft). All these four series were very similar, using various engines, propellers and other equipment. The final version was the P-39Q with an Allison V-1710-85 engine (1420 HP), and the main difference was the installation of two .50 calibre (12.7 mm) machine guns in under-wing pods instead of the four .30 calibre (7.62mm) wing mounted machine guns in the older series. Most of the 4905 Q series aircraft were sent to Soviet Union. Production was ceased in August 1944, after the final Airacobra, number 9558, was finished. The USAAF employed Airacobras extensively until August 1944, when they were withdrawn from front line service. The USAAF used the largest number of Airacobras, 2105 of all types, in February 1944. They served in the Pacific theatre, as well as in North Africa and Italy. In total 4758 Airacobras were sent to Russia (actually 4924, but 166 aircraft were lost during transport) where they were very popular for their solid metal airframe and heavy weapons. The French Air Force had 165 Airacobras, and P-39's also served with the Australian RAAF, the Italian AF and the Portuguese AF. After the war a number of Airacobras were employed in civilian service and used for air races.
NÌKOLIK SLOV ÚVODEM P-39 Airacobra byl vyvinut spoleèností Bell Aircraft Corp. z Buffala ve druhé polovinì tøicátých let. Prototyp XP-39 absolvoval svùj první let 6.4.1939 v Daytonu, kde dosáhl maximální rychlosti 628 km/h ve výšce 6100m. Na tuto výšku vystoupal za pouhých 5 minut. XP-39 mìl velmi dobré letové vlastnosti, mimo jiné i díky své originální konstrukci, kdy turbokompresorem vybavený motor Alison V-1710-17 o výkonu 1150 k byl umístìn v tìžišti letounu, v trupu za kabinou. Toto umístìní motoru také uvolnilo pøíï pro instalaci silné výzbroje. 27.dubna USAF objednalo zkušební sérii 12 YP-39, ale pøed jejím dokonèením byl projekt významnì upraven. Pro potíže s turbokompresorem byl pùvodní motor nahrazen motorem Alison V-1710-37 bez turbokompresoru, dávajícím jen 1090 k. Mezi bloky válcù byl namontován kanon Oldsmobile T-9 ráže 37mm, støílející dutým høídelem vrtule, do pøídì byly instalovány dva kulomety ráže 12,7 mm a dva ráže 7,7 mm. Pilotovo sedadlo dostalo pancéøování, ale hmotnost vzrostla na 3160kg oproti 2820kg prototypu. Rychlost poklesla na 590 km/h a výstup na 6100m nyní trval 7,5 minuty. Pøestože výkony stroje poklesly, USAAF neztratilo zájem a objednalo 80 produkèních P-39C. Z nich bylo 20 dodáno skuteènì jako P-39C, zbylých 60 pak bylo upraveno na standard verze D, se dvìma kulomety ráže 12,7 mm v pøídi a ètyømi kulomety ráže 7,62 instalovanými v køídle. USAAF dostalo své první P-39D v únoru 1941 a objednalo daších 344 kusù. Britové objednali v dubnu 1940 675 Airacober. Byly dodány v èervnu 1941. Odpovídaly verzi D upravené podle britských požadavkù. Kanon Oldsmobile byl nahrazen kanonem Hispano M1 ráže 20 mm, a køídelní kulomety byly britské Browning ráže 7,7 mm. RAF testovalo ètyøi Airacobry Mk.I v bojových podmínkách u 601.squadrony v øíjnu 1941(kde si je vyzkoušeli i nìkteøí ès.piloti), ale byli zklamáni jejich výkony. Zbylých 212 Airacober Mk.I pak bylo posláno do Ruska a pøedáno sovìtskému letectvu. Po vstupu USA do války, 179 britských Airacober bylo konfiskováno na výrobní lince. Stroje byly oznaèeny P-400 a bojovaly vìtšinou v Pacifiku. Všechny P-400 mìly 12 výfukových nátrubkù na každé stranì motoru, což je jejich hlavní rozlišovací znak od P-39D.V dodávkách následoval blok 229 letadel verze P-39F, také s 12 výfukovými nátrubky, po nìm pak verze P-39K (210 letadel), P-39L (250 letadel), P-39M (240 letadel) a velký blok 2095 letadel verze P-39N. Všechny ètyøi tyto série si byly velmi podobné, používaly rùzné motory, vrtule a další vybavení. Poslední a nejrozšíøenìjší verzí byla verze P-39Q, vybavená motorem Alison V-1710-85 o výkonu 1420 k. Její nejvìtším vnìjším rozdílem oproti pøedchozím verzím bylo nahrazení ètyø køídelních kulometù dvìma kulomety ráže 12,7 mm, instalovaných v gondolkách pod køídly. Vìtšina z 4905 P-39Q byla dodána do Sovìtského svazu. Produkce byla ukonèena v srpnu 1944 po dokonèení poslední, 9558. Airacobry. USAAF používalo Airacobry v první linii do srpna 1944, kdy byly staženy z frontové služby. Nejvíce Airacober, celkem 2105 letadel všech verzí, mìlo USAAF ve službì v únoru 1944. Sloužily v Pacifiku, v severní Africe, Itálii i na domácích základnách. Celkem 4758 (4924, ale 166 bylo ztraceno bìhem pøepravy) Airacober bylo dodáno Sovìtskému svazu. V sovìtském letectvu byly Airacobry velmi populární pro jejich robustní konstrukci a silnou výzbroj. Francouzské letecvo mìlo 165 Airacober rùzných verzí, a P-39 byly v menších poètech používány i letectvy Austrálie, Itálie a Portugalska. Jeden kus se po válce vyskytoval i v polském letectvu. This aircraft was assigned to Lt. james Selzer, who took part in heavy fighting in May over Port Moresby. The kill marks on the fuselage, however, belong to Lt. J. McKeon, who, on December 7th, 1942, shot down a Zero on an escort mission during the fight for the base at Buna. This would be the first of five kills for him over New Guinea. His sixth and final kill was attained over Europe in 1944. P-39D-1 s/n 41-38353, Lt. James W. Selzer, 35th FS / 8th FG, Milne Bay, prosinec 1942. Tento stroj byl pøidìlen Lt. Jamesi W. Selzeovi, úèastníkovi tìžkých kvìtnových bojù nad pøístavem Port Moresby. Symbol sestøelu na trupu však patøí Lt. J. McKeonovi, který 7. prosince 1942 rozstøílel Zero pøi doprovodu bombardérù bìhem bojù o základnu Buna. Jednalo se o jeho první z pìti sestøelù docílených nad Novou Guineou. Svùj poslední, šestý sestøel zaznamenal už nad evropským kontinentem v roce 1944.

Norman G. Morris commanded the 35th FS / 8th FG from October, 1942 to March, 1943. The uncommon all black livery of this aircraft, in all likelihood, hails from the period of protecting the Australian port of Townsville against night attacks by the Japanese as July turned into August in 1942. On the night of the 26th and 27th of July, pilots of the 8th FG were able to bring down one of the attackers. The fighter remained in the same camouflage scheme through to the battles over New Guinea in the spring of 1943. The Milne Bay marking was finished off with the letter ‘M’, which partially obscured the original writing on the front. The letter was also the initial of not only the pilot’s last name, but also his rank, and the name of his mechanic, S/Sgt Mattea. P-39D-1 s/n 41-38401, Maj. Norman "Coach" G. Neobvyklé celoèerné zbarvení Airacobry velmi pravdìpodobnì pochází z období obrany australského pøístavu Townsville pøed noèními nálety japonských ètyømotorových hydroplánù z pøelomu èervence a srpna roku 1942. V noci z 26. na 27. èervence se pilotùm 8th FG podaøilo jednoho z útoèníkù sestøelit. Zbarvení si stíhaèka ponechala i v období služby na Nové Guineji, kde bojovala ještì na jaøe roku 1943. Na základnì Milne Bay byl marking stroje doplnìn o písmeno M, které èásteènì pøekrylo i pùvodní nápis na pøídi. Písmeno korespondovalo s iniciálou hodnosti i pøíjmení pilota a také s pøíjmením mechanika, S/Sgt Mattea. H12 33

Lt. Don C. McGee was among the most successful fighter pilots in the Pacific flying the P-39. During the defense of Port Moresby in May, 1942 he downed three confirmed Zeros and another two probables. He himself claimed five Zeros, and on May 28th, he shot down a Zero that remained unconfirmed, although the kill evidently led to the saving of the life of a colleague. In further combat action over New Guinea, Lt. McGee gained a further two victories flying the P-38 in 1943. His personal tally, which totaled six, was completed in 1945 as a member of the 375th FG flying combat over Germany where he downed a Bf 109. P-39D-1 s/n 41-38338, Lt. Don C. McGee, 36th FS / 8th FG, základna Milne Bay, podzim 1942. Lt. Don C. McGee byl jedním z nejúspìšnìjších letcù bojujících v Pacifiku na stíhaèce typu Bell P-39 Airacobra. Pøi obranì pøístavu Port Moresby v kvìtnu 1942 sestøelil jistì tøi Zera a další mu bylo pøiznáno jako sestøelené pravdìpodobnì. On sám nárokoval znièení pìti Zer, ovšem Zero zasažené pøi souboji z 28. kvìtna mu nebylo pøiznáno, aèkoliv svým útokem na nìj zøejmì zachránil život jednomu ze svých kolegù. V dalších bojích nad Novou Guineou si Lt. McGee v roce 1943 pøipsal v kabinì stíhaèky P-38 Lightning ještì dvì vzdušná vítìzství. Své bojové skóre, èítající celkem 6 jistých sestøelù, uzavøel v roce 1945 jako pøíslušník 375th FG v bojích nad Nìmeckem, když znièil stíhací Messerschmitt Bf 109.

Lt. Robert "Swede" P. Hanson (one unconfirmed kill from July 23, 1943 in a Lightning) had his picture taken in the cockpit of this Airacobra. At the end of 1942 at least on further Airacobra appeared with this unit carrying this type of dwarf artwork on its front end. The popularity of these little characters from the Disney studios is evident on another, that adorned the front end of a Lightning flown by Lt. Allen E. Hill. The tip of the spinner was painted in white, and it is not out of the question that the spinner itself was red. V kabinì této Airacobry se nechal vyfotografovat Lt. Robert "Swede" P. Hanson (celkem jeden nepotvrzený sestøel 23.7.1943 s P-38 Lightning). Na konci roku 1942 u této perutì objevila minimálnì ještì jedna Airacobra verze D-2 s kresbou trpaslíka na pøídi. Velkou popularitu filmových postavièek ze studia Disney u této jednotky potvrzuje další trpaslík, který nesla pøíï Lightningu Lt. Allena E. Hilla. Okraj vrtulového kužele mìl bílou barvou zvýraznìný okraj výstøelného otvoru a není vylouèeno, že kužel mohl být èervený. Není zøejmé, zda mìla bílá špièka kuželu letoun pouze ozdobit, nebo oznaèovala funkèní èi organizaèní roli pilota.

Lt. Owen, according to squadron records, had one unspecified kill. Greater success in the cockpit of this aircraft was gained by Capt. Francis E. Dubisher, when on August 15th, 1943, he downed three Ki-48 Lilys attacking the airbase at Tsili-Tsili. The portrait of the head of the tiger on the front originally had a different form and was bordered by a dedication with the inscription UNION-ENDICOTT PUBLIC SCHOOL/ ENDICOTT. NEW YORK. P-39N-5 s/n 42-18802, Lt. Roy Owen, 41st FS / 35th FG, základna Tsili-Tsili, srpen 1943. Lt. Owen dosáhl dle záznamù perutì jedno blíže nespecifikované vítìztví. Velký úspìch ovšem zaznamenal v kabinì této stíhaèky Capt. Francis E. Dubisher, když 15. srpna 1943 znièil tøi nepøátelské bombardéry Ki-48 „Lily“, útoèící na základnu Tsili-Tsili. Kresba hlavy tygra na pøídi mìla pùvodnì jiný tvar a lemoval ji darovací nápis UNION-ENDICOTT PUBLIC SCHOOL/ ENDICOTT. NEW YORK.

The white tail surfaces were a quick recognition feature of friendly aircraft, and the white leading edges of the wings were consistent with this policy. This type of marking was used in the south Pacific on single engined aircraft from the end of summer, 1943. The use of the marking was not well defined, and as a result, there were variations in its appearance. The doors to the cockpit carried the same marking as on the aircraft flown by Lt. Owen of the 41st FS, and so it is likely that the doors were placed on Owen’s aircraft. P-39N-5 s/n 42-18810, 40th FS / 35th FG, Nadzab, podzim 1943. Bílou barvou natøené ocasní plochy jsou markingem pro rychlé rozpoznávání vlastních letadel, pøedepsáno bylo také bílé zbarvení nábìžné hrany køídla. V jihovýchodním Pacifiku se tento marking používal na jednomotorových strojích v období od konce léta 1943. Použití markingu však nebylo pøesnì popsáno v žádném dokumentu a tak lze nalézt øadu variací. Na dveøích kokpitu se nacházela stejná kresba, jakou nesl stroj Lt. Owena od 41st FS, a je tedy pravdìpodobné, že na tento stroj byly pøeneseny celé dveøe z Owenova letounu.

P-39Q-6 s/n 42-19927, Capt. L. A. Tate, 82nd TRS / 71st TRG, May, 1944
Capt. L. A. Tate, veteran of aerial combat, originally served with 41st FS/35th FG in 1943. In November, 1943, he was reported to have shot down two enemy aircraft in the form of Nakajima Ki-43 ‘Oscar’s, the symbols for which could be found on the right side of the aircraft. A partial wreckage of the fighter was discovered in the seventies at the former air base at Tadji, and based on a reconstruction of the stencils on the fuselage, the aircraft has been allocated the serial number 42-19027, which was a P-39N. Period photographs clearly show the bird to be a P-39Q, suggesting that the reconstruction was inaccurate. P-39Q-6 s/n 42-19927, Capt. L. A. Tate, 82nd TRS / 71st TRG, kvìten 1944 Capt. L. A. Tate, veterán vzdušných bojù, pùvodnì sloužil od zaèátku roku 1943 u 41st FS/35th FG. U této jednotky mìl také v listopadu 1943 sestøelit dvì nepøátelské stíhaèky Nakajima Ki-43 „Oscar“, symboly sestøelù najdete na pravém boku letounu. Znaènì neúplný vrak stíhaèky byl v 70. letech minulého století nalezen na bývalé letecké základnì Tadji a na základì zrekonstruované popisky na trupu bývá stroji pøisuzováno s/n 42-19027, odpovídající verzi P-39N. Dobová fotografie stíhaèky, která jasnì dokládá, že Airacobra byla verze Q, ukazuje, že tato rekonstrukce byla chybná.
