Effects of essential oils on mixed biofilms: a chemogenomic approach to novel antimicrobial agents and the pathways they target KU Leuven Abstract: The development of antimicrobial drug resistance and its spreading around the world are among the most serious threats to public health. It is generally accepted that the indiscriminate use of antimicrobial agents has resulted in the emergence of a number of drug-resistant microorganisms. Thus there is a clear need for new antimicrobial agents with a novel mechanism of action. Medicinal plants used to treat infectious diseases seem to be an abundant source of new bioactive metabolites and an extensive variety of plants has been screened for their antimicrobial properties in the last decades. In many cases, however, all the compounds responsible for the antimicrobial effect have not been identified, and for many identified bioactive compounds the exact mechanism of action remains to be established. It is clear, however that synergy between different components in a plant extract often contributes to its antimicrobial activity. This synergy has often been viewed in the past as a disadvan Organisaties: • Afd. Molec. Microbiol. & Biotechnologie

Novel high dielectric ABO4 layers on high mobility semiconductors for downsizing MOSFETs: links between the structural and electrical properties KU Leuven Abstract: De sub-micrometer schaal miniaturisatie van de metaal-oxide-halfgeleider veld-effect transistor maakt de ontwikkeling van kleine elektronische toestellen mogelijk.

Flying autonomous camera crew. KU Leuven Abstract: This PhD research project focuses on the development of a robotic flying camera man. Within the Cametron project we aim at making the process of filming an event completely automatic. A human camera crew will be replaced by automated static PTZ cameras and UAV-drones sporting a camera and microphone. The movie director will be replaced by a virtual directorso that an event, for example a music performance or a sports game, canbe captured in real time with minimal human intervention. This project focuses on the virtual camera man part of Cametron, in which an unmannedaerial vehicle (UAV), sporting a PTZ camera and microphone, is robotized such that it totally autonomously can gather video of an event, based on high abstraction level instructions from the virtual director. Study of wind-farm ABL interaction based on wind-tunnel experiments KU Leuven Abstract: ith the recognition that wind energy will become an important contributor to the world#s energy portfolio, wind farms are expected to cover increasingly large surface areas. At these scales, wind farms significantlyslow down the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) wind velocities at turbine height, leading to a large reduction of available power. At the same time, turbulent interactions between the ABL and wind turbines, and wakeinteractions between turbines, lead to increased power variability, andstructural loading, reducing turbine lifetimes and increasing costs. Therefore, if future wind-energy targets are to be met, new approaches to improving the cost-efficiency of energy extraction from the ABL by wind farms are necessary. This PhD research aims at the testing of new turbine placement patterns, and control strategies for large wind-turbine arrays. To that end, miniature turbine arrays are deployed in a wind-tunnel environment, and measurements are performed using hot-wire anemometr Organisaties: • Afd. Toeg. Mechanica & Energieconversie

Selective degradation of AOX by UV /Advanced Oxidation Techniques KU Leuven Abstract: Today, the world is facing important environmental challenges, among others the supply of high quality drinking water to the ever increasing population. Also, as a direct result of industrial activity, xenobiotic compounds enter wastewater and the environment, when not properly treated. The European Water Directive regulates the discharge of these compounds, with as an ultimate goal the discharge of compounds near naturally occurring background values and close-to-zero for man-made synthetic substances. In a various papers, the applicability of Advanced Oxidation Processes for the removal of adsorbable halogenated organics (AOX) has been examined. AOP#s for AOX removal are indeed already reported in literaturefor industrial waste water of various origins. Medium Pressure UV irradiation involved a high selectivity but low efficiency for the

Study of the influence of mixing and flow conditions on organic reactions in milli and meso flow systems KU Leuven Abstract: Reactor miniaturization is a recent development in process intensification. Scientific studies show an increased yield and selectivity upon theapplication of microreactors due to enhanced mass and heat transfer in the small (< 1 mm) micro reactor channels. Micro reactors are nowadays almost exclusively applied on lab scale. The productivity of these reactors is not sufficient for most industrial applications in fine chemistry.Up scaling of micro reactors towards milli and meso flow (up to 10 cm channel diameter) with similar mass and heat transfer properties is necessary in order to meet industrial demands. This doctoral research will investigate the flow and mixing properties of reactors at different scalesand with various mixing elements. System integration for the OmniTrack project KU Leuven Abstract: The proposed doctoral research in engineering technology is situated inthe field of electronic localization systems which is expected to create a myriad of new applications in the domain of ambient intelligence andubiquitous computing. This specific project will focus on the design ofa functional prototype that can track the location of objects fitted within the system at a high-speed and accuracy. This means that research, that has been performed on this subject previously within the group, needs to be applied and integrated into a single compact, functional unit. The issues that arise with integrating all those separate pieces of hard- and software will call for a dedicated approach. Design of compact UWB imaging systems KU Leuven Abstract: This doctoral research in engineering technology will focus on the design of an Ultra-WideBand (UWB) system for ElectroMagnetic (EM) sensing and imaging. A lot of research during the last decade has shown the potential of UWB for medical applications, in-vivo dosimetry, and breast cancer detection. The presence and position of a tumour can be measured owingto its different complex permittivity compared to neighbouring healthy tissue. Recent discussions with different companies have revealed another huge potential of UWB imaging in the manufacturing industry. For both medical and industrial applications, the reliable generation and accurate reception of the UWB signals are key to achieve resolution and contrast in the dielectric image of the object. Role of the cAMP-PKA pathway on adhesion and pathogenicity in the humanfungal pathogen Candida glabrata. KU Leuven Abstract: Candida glabrata is an upcoming human fungal pathogen, frequently resistant to azole antifungal drugs and therefore difficult to treat clinically. One of the first steps in the infection process is adhesion to a surface, in which particular cell wall proteins play an important role. C. glabrata has a large group of such adhesins called the EPA-family. It isalready known that glucose has an effect on the expression of EPA1-3 via the putative receptor Gpr1, a homologue of S. cerevisiae Gpr1. The PKApathway, which is important for virulence in many fungal pathogens (eg.C. albicans), is a strong candidate for connecting Gpr1 to EPA gene expression. In this project, Gpr1 will be first investigated further in order to prove it is a true sensor for glucose, sucrose and fructose. Therefore we will make specific point mutants to abolish signaling and search for competitive inhibitors of signaling. We will do this in a strain where CgGpr1 is tagged with GFP, so that for each point mutant we are Organisaties: • Afd. Molec. Microbiol. & Biotechnologie

Molecular genetics of bimodal protein targeting in yeast. KU Leuven Abstract: Many of the microbial processes important for the establishment of infections by bacteria or fungi can be considered 'developmental processes'.For example, the transition from a planktonic cell to a biofilm cell attached to the mucosal surface of a host requires an intricate network ofregulatory processes that determine the expression levels of a large number of genes. The student in the VIB department will help in the development of bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) in order to study module and genome-wide-scale protein-protein interactions (PPI) during biofilm formation. This has never been studied so far because of the limitation of the molecular tools. BiFC approach will offer the opportunity to analyze PPI in biofilms, by laser confocal microscopy of biofilms grown in vitro and in vivo. The BiFC will be used to study biofilm development and specific protein-protein interactions that occur in persistercells and not in biofilm cells, or vice versa and that occur in the Organisaties: • Afd. Pavement-Vehicle Interaction (PVI): impact of deflection on GHG emissions of different pavement structures and materials in Flanders KU Leuven Abstract: Background and problem definition:
The transportation network is responsible for an important part of the annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide. Within the transportation infrastructure, roadway pavements are a critical and highly visible component, supporting over nine trillion ton-kilometers of freight and transporting passengers over fifteen trillion kilometers each year (Akbarian, M. & Ulm, F.-J., 2012, p.ii; Santero, N.J. et al., 2011, p.801).
Due to the high environmental (GHG emissions, recyclability,...) and economical (vehicle fuel consumption, maintenance,...) impact of a continually expanding road system, the pavement network needs to attain a higher level of sustainability. Improving the sustainability requires a fundamental understanding of the relationship between the pavement-vehicle interaction (PVI) and the structural and material properties of pavements (Akbarian, M. & Ulm, F.-J., 2012, p.ii).

Three-dimensional modeling of the end zones of prestressed concrete elements, stress distribution and crack propagation analysis. KU Leuven Abstract: The initiation of the pre-tension force in concrete construction elements is associated with a specific stress distribution along the length ofthe transfer zone and in the end zone of these elements. There already is a wide range of theoretical knowledge within this field but it does not always correspond to the practical experiences manufacturers observe within the range of products or applied procedures. The theoretical models which are used, are usually of a two-dimensional or linear nature. Toaccurately portray the correct stress distribution within theoretical models and to make a correct estimation of the behavior of the stress distribution and crack initiation and propagation within these structural elements, a threedimensional model would have to be able to accurately display phenomena such as splitting, surface tensions and flange tension, and the influence of design parameters (e.g., geometry, bondage strength, prestressing, ...).
Molec. Microbiol. & Biotechnologie

The complex phase behaviour of aqueous solutions of water soluble polymers KU Leuven Abstract: In the investigation of water-soluble polymers, hydrogen bond interactions are important. H-bond interactions were shown to be responsible for lower critical liquid-liquid (LCST) and closed-loop miscibility gaps, which are often observed in mixtures of small molecules and polymers with water. Nevertheless, recent experiments indicate that the behaviour of water-soluble polymers is far from being completely understood, and that the available theoretical models do not even describe certain qualitative aspects of their thermodynamic behaviour. As a matter of fact, water-soluble polymers often display an atypical LCST demixing behaviour. Due to the lack of molecular and theoretical understanding of the observed behaviour, a thermodynamically correct, but phenomenological classification according to Type 1, 2 and 3 was developed, which is now used in literature. #Type 1# is the classical Flory-Huggins (FH) behaviour for which the critical composition shifts to lower polymer concentrations w Organisaties: • Afdeling Polymeerchemie en -materialen
