• The widespread application of GIS has lead to an increased use of geographic data within multiple disciplines • Geographic datasets are increasingly being shared and exchanged, and are also used for purposes other than those for which they were produced
• Any description of reality is always an abstraction, always, partial, and always just one of many posisible “Views”. • Thus, to insure that data will be understood by both computer systems and users, the fundamental concept of geographic data, the feature, must be fully documented Sumber : Digital National FrameworkTM, 2008
What is a Geographic Feature? Geographic features occur at two levels: Instances and types. Feature Instance: Pisa Tower, Lincoln Tunnel, Brooklyn Bridge At the instance level, a geographic feature is represented as a discrete phenomenon that is associated with its geographic and temporal coordinates and may be portrayed by a particular graphic symbol.
Feature Type: Tower, Tunnel, Bridge Individual feature instances are grouped into classes with common characteristics.
"Brooklyn Bridge" is the abstraction of a certain real world bridge in New York. The term "bridge" is the abstraction of the collection of all real world phenomena that is classified into the concept behind the term “bridge”.
Instance = wujud
A feature is an abstraction of a real world phenomenon. A geographic feature is a feature associated with a location relative to the Earth. A digital representation of the real world can be thought of as a set of features. The OGC approach to feature modeling follows the principles specified in ISO 19109:2005 , "Geographic information - Rules for application schema." As shown in Figure “Modeling Geographic Information”, Conceptual schemas define abstract feature types and provide the process for domain experts to develop application schemas that are used to encode content describing feature instances. The developer of an application schema may use feature definitions from feature catalogues that already exist.

DATA GRAFIS (GRAPHIC DATA) - Spatial data
Says where the feature is • Co-ordinate based • Vector data – discrete features: Points Lines Polygons (zones or areas) • Raster data: A continuous surface
DATA GRAFIS (GRAPHIC DATA) • continuous: elevasi, curah hujan, salinitas air laut • area: - unbounded: penggunaan lahan, area pasar, jenis tanah, jenis batuan - bounded: batas kota/negara, persil - moving: massa udara, kumpulan binatang, kumpulan ikan • networks: jalan, pipa/kabel transmisi, sungai
• points: - fixed: sumur, lampu jalan, alamat - moving: mobil, ikan, rusa
DATA ATTRIBUT (ATRIBUTE DATA)
Says what a feature is Eg. statistics, text, images, sound, etc.
Misal: 100 cm + 35 cm = 135 cm contoh : pendapatan, umur, curah hujan

• Vector – points, lines and polygons • Raster – gridded, classified space
Vector Formats – Discrete representations of Reality – give specific spatial locations explicitly – geographic space is continuous, not quantized – attributes are stored separately from locations
Raster Formats – use square cells to model reality – Matches hardware nicely – Reduced spatial precision – Large storage requirements
Example showing effect of vector graphics versus raster graphics. The original vector-based illustration is at the left. The upper-right image illustrates magnification of 7x as a vector image. The lower-right image illustrates the same magnification as a bitmap image. Raster images are based on pixels and thus scale with loss of clarity, while vector-based images can be scaled indefinitely without degrading.

Point features • • • •
one dimensional only represent positions, x and y have no other meaningful measurement can’t get area or length as a calculation
Line features • one dimensional • represent both position and direction • length is a significant measurement of line features
Polygon features • two dimensional • area features • represent both position and area
Representing features in the raster data model • Square cells store values to represent reality
• Images – Aerial photos – Scanned photos or maps – Satellite imagery
• Grids – Values represent some measured quantity or classification (elevation, precipitation, land cover)
Raster datasets - GRIDs Common GRID format datasets: • Land use/land cover • Elevation (DEM) – Slope – Aspect – Shaded relief
• Precipitation • Temperature
Raster cells or pixels • a cell or pixel is a two dimensional square • the smallest nondivisible element of an image • an object which represents an element of a regularly spaced surface

4. DOP (Dillution of Precision) PDOP (Positional Dilution of Precision – posisi tiga dimensi).
