The situation of the mass production of pure blood fatty pigs: • It is a subsidiary activity for small businesess, in big scale do not function. • It is more rural development, agro turistic activity, than pig production • The small farms can be very good for the genetic conservation, but the market do not need lot of fat, the market need intramuscular meat, for this reason they have problems in the pure blood fatty pig production. • The diary growing is aprox. 250 grams, using more than 2,5 kgs of feed, producing 6-8 piglets by one sow yearly, this is the most expensive pig in the world.
The solution for the mass mangalica fatty pig production, the F1 programme: • It is strictly obligatory the use of pure blood certificated females, and secure the genetic lines maintenance • If more F1 fatty pigs needed, more pure blood mangalica females are needed, the market generate the demand for the pure blood female and male production. • The male can be only Duroc, the F1 dairy grow is 650-700 gramms, using 2,5-3,5 kgs feed.

The pure blood and F1 breeders are linked together: • Ewerybody has pure blood sows, and maintane the mangalica genetic base. • The pure blood fatty pig is THE IMAGE, THE BRAND for the entire sector, but without F1 production the mangalica market collapses in few months. • Olmos és Tóth Kft is searching special markets for the pure blood mangalica meat.
The big feed crisis in 2007-2008: • The high feed prices ruined more than 30 % of mangalica farms, the average number of sows, and farrows will fall in 2009… • The collapse of the „white pig” meat prices is affect badly also the mangalica meat price. • The new feed prices in the autumn of 2008 are saving the breeding, and the life pig price is growing up again. • The crisis made the big integration stronger…

It is not an altenative for the pig sector, is a subsidary activity The vertical integration is essential, the fast reaction for the internatioanl market demands is vital The I+D activity is very important, in this years starts it again after 60 years of pause… The mangalica sector must respect the market demand in the mass production, the goverment only guarantees the maintanence of some gene banks. The fat pig production can be pure blood or F1 as the market demands, fast changes can happen, the pure blood sows must be keep alive with every tecnic we can use. At the present 5 000 pure blood mangalica can be sold in reginal markets, other 5 000 in a national integration, but in the future the rural turism can be the most importante output for the pure blood mangalica. There are a strong demand for 30 000 f1 mangalica in the national and international markets. Lot of money, professionality, and market knowledge is needed. The mangalica is more than a simple pig for the hungarians. Is a symbol of the past, and is the hope for the renaissance of the hungarian agriculture world famous 100 years ago…

This is a hungaricum, Hungary has a monopolic situation of the mangalica mass production The mangalica population is genetically controlled, the production is well organized, centralized. There are few strong companies dominating the sector, they can „help” for the small producers, and using the small farmers as image, and marketing. Without strong markets, the mangalica can not grow upper than 500 sows, because the goverment subsidies only give part of the cost of breeding. We do not need direct subsidies for the male and female production, we need markets for generate demand for the breeds, and that way create demand for the males and females produced by the genetic banks. The mangalica can help to the rehabilitation of world wide pig sector, the mangalica is a good indicator animal, if somebody start eat mangalica, can be a consumer for the white pig meat also…
Control Of Origin • It is deadly for the mangalica if is falsificated in the market. If shops can sell low quality white pig meat (old sows meat) as mangalica, they can ruin the entire sector. • A hungarian I+D proyect starts in this winter for create the final and definitive control for the mangalica origin: the DNA based control will be able the detect the mangalica DNA in final product. More than 2 millon of euros will be payd in 4 years for develop the system.
