fotograferen / materiaal zoeken fotograferen / beeld verwerking (zichtbaar maken)
Wo. ochtend (beeld) redactie / uitwerken en afronden fotografie Wo. middag opmaak tijdschrift / overig materiaal verzamelen Do. ochtend Do. middag
ontwerp / redactie / stressen ... ontwerp / redactie / stressen ...
Vr. ochtend Vr. middag

WORLD WIDE WIDEO A CELEBRATION FOR BREAKING ROUTINES IN VIDEO
Ola Vasiljeva
How do we reflect on the ways in which the "new-media era" of the recent past has changed the way we comprehend art, music, and culture? This workshop will give an insight to the contemporary video subculture, where the common use of do-it-yourself strategies, an exuberant energy merges with a certain form of rebellion. The workshop will focus on some of the most extraordinary video and media works today as well as on the discussion about the experimentation and pushing the boundaries of the common use of the video editing software. We will look at the works of artists who use digital forms to explore contemporary visual culture and how it is mediated through the popular technologies: restaged and reworked films, remixed and reinterpreted sources ranging from music clips to classic cinema and contemporary art, the underground legends. Cory Arcangel, Michael Bell Smith, Paper Rad, Wyld File, Animal Charm, Charles Broskoski, Shana Moulton, Damon Zucconi, Bad Beuys Entertainment, and Carla Edwards are some of these artists. Some special attention will be paid to the early works of David Lynch and Kenneth Anger. Most of these artists create the most unusual and sophisticated bodies of work using highly approachable and available editing tools. Some of them use significaly inappropriate tools to create the image or sound, which results in the wonderful new dimension of video. The participants of this workshop are encouraged to do the same. With the only few tools such as editing software, the Internet and a huge dosage of imagination and intuition- the participants work on their own video. There will be no ‘teaching” involved, the participants can full rely on their own ideas, however I will be very glad to help with any advice- practical or creative. The idea is to start an experiment on video and work on it during the workshop, but there is no goal to have a finished body of work by the end of the workshop. We will burn a DVD compilation on the last day though - to have a good overview of this process. No special preparation is required, however everyone is free to modify and existing project too. The participants are free to work on the project in a group or individually. Good knowledge of Photoshop and basic knowledge of AfterEffects is required.
DAY 1 -
Meeting with the students, a brief introduction to the workshop Introduction to my own work and the work of some inspiring artists The students are free to show and talk about their projects or ideas Discussing the possible projects and starting to work
DAY 2 -
Exploring YOUTUBE-like media archiving websites Watching works by the artists who successfully and playfully make usage of these archives in their work Discussing the alternative ways of using music and sound in video Working on the projects
DAY 3 -
Working on the projects Discussing practical and technical issues.
DAY4-5 -
Working on the projects Burning a DVD compilation with all the projects to take home.
Required facilities: Computers with After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator etc, Internet, Scanners. Preferably - a projector.

A Week at the Pool Studying the Appeal of the Swimming Pool Miklos Gaál & Marianne Vierø
- a nice picture here -
To set off the workshop we will review art works, films, examples from popular culture and other interesting phenomena carrying the motif of the swimming pool. Through observation of the versatile forms connected to the subject we will try to define the different aspects that it is able to host. We will discuss the basis for utilizing the swimming pool as a starting point and/or subject matter for ones work. Each of you will formulate an idea and create an artwork that will recreate, reinterpret, transform or otherwise channel your personal approach to a swimming pool. The artistic idea determines the choice of medium: use of different kinds of media and ways of expression in creating your work is encouraged. You can work with sculpture, photography, drawing, video, performance, installation or pretty much any other means of expression that supports your idea the best. On the last day of the workshop we will present the finished works as an exhibition in the premises of the school together with a small exhibition catalogue. We will have a feedback critique session reviewing the works followed directly by a finnissage!

Pinhole Photography Brígida Mendes
Forget about perfect lenses, accurate viewfinders and electronic shutters. In fact, forget about the cameras you are used to and discover the world of pinhole cameras. A world of creative freedom, imagination and experimentation which alters our view of reality. Using a pinhole camera is the most magical way to take a photograph, there is always wonder about the unpredictability of the process with no controls, optics or a view finder, the image cannot be planned and will appear only when developed. Objectives: - Understanding of image making. - To explore different ways of building and recording images through pinhole cameras. Schedule: First day -
Introduction to the workshop. Introduction to history, images, cameras and formulas within pinhole photography. Participants will be shown how to make a pinhole view camera which demonstrates how a photographic image is built. Second day -
Participants will make improvised pinhole cameras from readily available materials. It is intended to construct a range of cameras varying in size, shape and number of pinholes. By using this cameras students will learn how to create photographic effects through pinhole technique. Third day -
Introduction to the work of artists which explore pinhole photography within their practice, e.g Abelardo Morell, known for photographing camera obscura images and Jerôme Schlomoff know for producing films with pinhole cameras. - Learning how to use the cameras – exposure, processing of negatives (Black&White photographic paper). - Shooting different subjects. Fourth day - Continuation of shootings. - Making positives Fifth day -
Presentation of results.

Composition in artworks Rumiko Hagiwara & Alice Nikitinova We will talk about the composition as a tool for expressing idea in artwork. We will show some small documentation every day as examples of different approaches in composition in art history and contemporary art, with emphasis on two different way of building images – classical and avant-garde. Also we will talk about composition in the space (installation). Every day we will do some small exercises with students, which will connect with the topic of the lecture. First day We will make a general introduction to this problem in art history and contemporary art, talking about renaissence approach, golden ratio and classical imagination about beautiful image, then about modernistic way of deconstruction the image. First part of the day we will show a slide-show with examples and talk about it. Exercise this day will be to create ten similar size drawings with similar subject but with different composition. This drawings would be taken more like sketches, then like finished work Second day We will talk about the composition in conceptual art, or in art witch use composition in a conceptual way showing slides-show as examples ( Kabakov, Barnet Newman...) The exercise will be to create two drawings (or photos) with two different approaches – one keeping classical rules, and another totally opposite, to create composition as unexpected as possible, which will break common rules. (making consciously “bad” composition) Third day We will talk about the framing and going out of the frame, with examples of American abstract expressionism, minimal art and contemporary artists working in this area (Jackson Pollock, Carl Andre, Blinky Palermo etc.) We will make a switch from 2D image to the installation. This exercise will be connected with the topic, using possibility of installation and presentation as well. It would be to create space presentation inside the school building. Students would be asked to choose the place to install the items (can be the drawings of the 1st and 2nd day’s exercises or something else) and to create the composition in the space. Forth day We will show a free selection of artworks using composition as a main tool. This exercise will be free (students realize their own idea connected with subject of workshop) Also we will make individual discussion with each student.
Fifth day We will let students continue working on free exercise, then we will make a presentation of all works done during the workshop and make a collective discussion.

TAKING IMAGES INTO ACCOUNT: STILL IMAGES AND THE VIDEO ESSAY Zachary Formwalt
Beginning with a look at some strategies used by several filmmakers engaged in film practices that call into question the ways in which certain images are received by their audiences, we will then begin work on developing a video collage made up of contributions from seminar participants. There will be space for those who want to work in direct collaboration with others and also those interested in a more indirect collaboration. Strategies for such collaboration will be discussed early on in the seminar so that work can begin as soon as possible. Films screened on Monday will be discussed in terms of their content, strategies of image critique, and relation between image and narrative or storytelling. In addition, the various collaborative forms that these artists/filmmakers were engaged in will be discussed. The outcome of the seminar will be a video collage made of contributions from seminar participants. The overall theme will be decided on Tuesday morning, though a goal of the seminar is to be able to relate varied contents, which may under everyday circumstances not be thought together, in a single moving image. A second goal is to construct this collage from images which have been found or inspired by some kind of contemporary image in circulation. No prior video experience is required, though those with video experience are encouraged.
Monday: Screening and discussion of the following films: z Critique de la Separation (Critique of Separation) (1961) Guy Debord z Letter to Jane (1972) Jean-Luc Godard & Jean-Pierre Gorin z Deutschland im Herbst (Germany in Autumn) (1978) Alexander Kluge with Alf Brustellin, Hans Peter Cloos, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus, Maximiliane Mainka, Edgar Reitz, Katja Rupé, Volker Schlöndorff, Peter Schubert, Bernhard Sinkel (EXCERPT) z Krieg und Frieden (War and Peace) (1982) Alexander Kluge with Volker Schlöndorff, Stefan Aust, Axel Engstfeld (EXCERPT) Tuesday: Found images brought in by participants will be discussed in terms of their potential for use in video. Rough storyboard construction and shooting of video begins. Wednesday: Video shoot continues and editing begins. Thursday: Editing and sound work. Friday: Screening of the final outcome.

When I was a child I wanted to be .... Eliza Proszczuk The issue of abstraction. From abstraction I make construction - as a Polish artist living now in Holland, its like that. But how it is for You?” Starting point is: When I was a child I wanted to be … Try to realize one of Your biggest dreams from Your childhood This workshop gives the opportunity to open up your minds for an abstract way of thinking. It is going to use your abilities of being a child. It will be a special time of making use of those things which were forbidden in childhood.( for example : I was not allowed calling out friends through the open window, breaking eggs on external wall, eating without cutlery, climbing on the tree in white tights). Doing so can have a therapeutic meaning as well, why not. During this week we will also observe if these ways of thinking would range, be more open, more spread. We are going to research how to use it in your language of art? How to translate these memories, dreams and experiences? Examples of artists are Kiki Smith, Louise Bourgeois, Andriej Tarkowski. I will make clear how I am using my childhood, background. We will discuss how it can be important for You. Workshop will use films, performances, brainstorming sessions and individual talks. Those students who are interested in taking part in that workshop should send me short documentation of their works and a short text [ten lines] two days before the workshop starts. 1 First day -Through that week we are going to meet in one room, which is going to be our space. - Every student need to use a piece of wall, floor, table. On that area You will place documentation from each day like sketches, notes, photos. It is going to be Your territory .You need to think about it. - Presentation and discussion of our works ( I will take part in it as well). Everyone should bring 10 or more images of your recent work, so that we get to know each Other and each others interests. - Afternoon discussion about each others childhood dreams. - Every student makes documentation from the day 2 Second day - Morning - Looking at outcomes, from day before - Afternoon - Watching movie. Polisch film from 1984. The Polish Ko-No-Piel-Ka was adapted by director Witold Leszczynski from the novel by Edward Redlinski Edward Redliński comes from the same town as me (Bialystok), and shots for his films where taken in a village near by. Bialystok is a town on the border with Bielarusia and Lithunia. Because of World Wars, and changing borders peoples from villages near by lost their nationality, but they are also really close to their roots, and nature. Some times they are foolishly blind, and they don’t want to open for new one, they are afraid about it. The film shows it remarkably. Watching it You will get an impression of XIX century, but actually it is the time of my childhood: Konopielka, from my neighborhood. Review Summary The Polish Ko-No-Piel-Ka was adapted by director Witold Leszczynski from the novel by Edward Redlinski. Krzysztof Majchrzak plays Kaziuk, a bull-headed peasant in a backwater Polish village. When a pretty schoolteacher comes to town, the very married Kaziuk is
consumed by sexual passion. Unable to satisfy himself in the customary manner, he chops down a tree that has been growing on his family farm for years. He further defies tradition by using a scythe instead of a sickle to cut his grass. Both of these irrational acts brand him as a blasphemous lunatic! It may help to have some background in Polish customs to fully appreciate this sublimely bizarre little film. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Sunday, September 14, 2008 Brainstorming session: - Every student makes documentation from the day, - Private talks 3 Third day Day of suprises!
“Abstraction in music”
- Every student makes documentation from the day, - Private talks - Homework, individual outcomes 4 Fourth day Wathing movie “Saragossa Manuscript” Review Summary "Head movies" The Saragossa Manuscript (1965), the equation is reversed; anyone going into this three-hour mind-fuck straight may well come out feeling stoned. Those who like a challenge and can handle a dizzyingly dense structure that’s more puzzle than plot will be well rewarded. A great score by Krzystof Penderecki and gorgeous cinematography (black-andwhite Cinemascope) keep the ear and eye riveted even while the brain is in meltdown. Directed by the well-regarded Wojciech Has, the film is an adaptation of at least part of a legendary, massive novel by Count Jan Potocki (1761-1815). Potocki’s resume would take almost as long to read as the film takes to watch. Sources say he was a noted travel writer, "novice king of Malta" (whatever that is), Egyptologist, occultist, historian, balloonist, linguist, melancholic, and eventual suicide at age 54. The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (1813) was his crowning work, favorably compared by aficionados to The Decameron and The Arabian Nights for its rich folkloric elements, supernatural motifs, bawdy humor, and surreal touches. It also contains heavy doses of Jewish mysticism and scientific theory of the day (including discussions of mathematics and philosophy). Like its predecessors it has a very modern, labyrinthine, story-within-a-story structure, but it’s even more multilayered, so much so that a slide rule and a scratch pad are advisable for keeping track of who’s who and what’s what. If the movie is any indication, there are as many as five levels of drilldown in some sequences, with one person telling a story about another person, who then tells another story about someone else, who then — you get the idea. BY GARY MORRIS - Brainstorming session - Watching movie “Saragossa Manuscript” - Brainstorming session - Group discussions - Every student makes documentation from the day,

“In Kinsjasa ontstaan agglomeraties rond gsm-masten.
What’s in a name?
papier, pennen, potloden, stiften e.d.

day one (5:00~11:00) we focus on observing and experiencing. how do you observe? how do you feel about it? and how do you translate it into your work? that day we have a special program, which starts at 5 in the morning... don't go out until that hour, just go to bed and start the day on a different moment...
* 5:00 at the entrance of St-Joost 's Hertogenbosch (Onderwijsboulevard 256) * wear warm clothes * pencil or pen
day two we work on concentrating, focusing and looking. what did you really see? how much do you see from the world you walk through day in day out? * AKV / St-joost ,‘s-Hertogenbosch,
* pencil or pen
day three we work around the space itself. what is your relationship with a space? how do you react on it as an artist? * AKV / St-joost ,‘s-Hertogenbosch,
* free material
day four we'll have a look on yourself as a being. after the surroundings, the other, the space, we look more on you, yourself in relationship towards art, so just bring a pen with you. * AKV / St-joost ,‘s-Hertogenbosch, day five
* pen presentation

The Power of Limitation Het effect van begrenzing en herhaling
Eline Schuurman & Amber Bijl •
Programma Maandag – Start kennismaking.
