LECTURE 5A: CARBODYDRATE
TOPICS OF DISCUSSION 1. DEFINITION 2. PLANT CARBOHYDRATE 3. CARBOHYDRATE CLASSIFICATION – Monosaccharide – Disaccharide, Trisaccharide and Tetrasaccharide – Polisaccharide
1. DEFINITION WHAT IS CARBOHYDRATE ? 1. Carbohydrate may be defined as polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone or as substances that yield one of these compounds on hydrolysis. 2. Many carbohydrates have the empirical formula (CH20), where n≥ n≥3. This formula obviously contributed to the original belief that this group of compounds could be represented as hydrates of carbon.
3.
4.
This last definition was not suitable when other compounds were encountered that had the general properties of carbohydrates but contained nitrogen or sulfur in addition to carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Moreover. The important simple sugar deoxyribose, found in every cell as a component of deoxyribose nucleic acid, has the molecular formula C5H10O4 rather than C5H10O5
2. PLANT CARBOHYDRATE Carbohydrate Production – In the mature photosynthesizing plant, atmospheric CO2 is converted, in the process of photosynthesis, into Dfructose 6-phosphate (F-6-P) from which a whole range of monosaccharides and monosaccharide derivatives can be formed. – Some of these monosaccharide derivatives are the precursors from which oligo- and polysaccharides are formed.
Sucrose – Probably the most important of the oligosaccharides formed is sucrose which is the means by which fixed carbon and energy are transported around the plant.
• Two classes of polysaccharides are synthesized, – the structural polysaccharides (e.g. cellulose, pectins) pectins) – the storage polysaccharides (e.g. starch, fructosan). fructosan).
• Structural polysaccharides for the formation of cell wall; thus the synthesis of structural polysacchapolysaccha-rides is to be found in all those regions of the plant where tissue growth is occurring. • Storage polysaccharides are synthesized under circumstances where they form – temporary stores of fixed carbon and energy or – permanent stores of fixed carbon and energy
• Temporary store – An example of a temporary store is the starch laid down as starch grains in the chloroplast during a period of active photosynthesis and which is mobilized and exported in the form of sucrose during the next dark period.
• Permanent stores – More permanent stores of polysaccharides are built up during the growth of the plant in the seeds which develop after the fertilization of flowers and in the various vegetative propagatory structures (e.g. stem tubers, corms, bulbs) bulbs) that may also be produced
Sucrose • 1-2 linked alpha glucose, beta fructose • Sources sugar cane & sugar beet
Cellulose: Structural polysaccharide from glucose
n ~ 5000-10000 Also found in some bacteria, algae, fungi, seed hairs, and animals (tunicates or sea squirts)
Microfibrils of cellulose
Wood cell (fiber) cell walls are made of cellulose + lignin and hemicelluloses
3. KLASIFIKASI KARBOHIDRAT A. Monosakarida 1.
12. Keadaan demikian terjadi, misalnya pada glukosa, akibat kedekatan gugusan hidroksil alkohol pada atom C No. 5 dengan gugusan aldehid pada atom C No. 1
