FUTURE FICTIONS Perspectives on world-building

Future visions are everywhere. Politicians promise us a better future – certainly in times of elections –, scientists and techno­ logists work towards it, companies try to shape a version of the future in which their products and services become necessities, and you and I sometimes think about our future, or our children’s and grandchildren’s. But can we find our way in the midst of all those visions? Can we read and appraise them? Which parameters are important in order to do so? With Future Fictions, Z33 explores how contemporary artists, designers and architects relate to future thinking and imaging: from mapping, questioning and criticizing, to developing complex visions about the structures and systems that may shape our life in the future. In this, criticism of what is and the suggestion of an alternative are two sides of the same coin: every complex future vision/fiction is an evaluation of the now, and every critical assessment of current systems implicitly hints at how things could be done differently.

Toekomstvisies zijn alomtegenwoordig. Politici beloven ons betere vooruitzichten – zeker in verkiezingstijd -, wetenschappers en technici bouwen aan een toekomst, bedrijven proberen toekomsten te ontwerpen waarin hun producten en diensten een plaatsje krijgen, en u en ik denken misschien wel eens aan onze toekomst of die van de kinderen en kleinkinderen. Maar, geraken we nog wel wijs uit al die visies? Kunnen we ze ook allemaal lezen en naar waarde schatten? Welke para­ meters zijn hiervoor belangrijk? Met Future Fictions kijkt Z33 hoe hedendaagse kunstenaars, designers en architecten zich verhouden tot toekomstbeelden: van het in kaart brengen, in vraag stellen en bekritiseren van aangereikte ficties, tot het creëren van eigen complexe visies over de structuren en systemen die vorm kunnen geven aan ons leven in een toekomst. Daarbij zijn kritiek op dat wat is en de suggestie van iets anders twee kanten van dezelfde medaille: in elke complexe toekomstvisie/fictie zit een evaluatie van het nu, in elke kritische benadering van het nu zit in mindere of meerdere mate een hint of verwijzing naar hoe het anders kan.

Horizons of values The complex future visions of Future Fictions offer horizons instead of blueprints. They avoid a pragmatic solutionist approach to future thinking, giving space to that which is essential as a precondition. The question whether something is desirable or not thus becomes more important than whether a scenario is possible, plausible or probable. At the core of the debate, therefore, are the values that are defended, questioned or challenged in these future visions. The visions themselves are fictions, and are meant to stay that way.

Realistic fiction or fact/fictions However, the fictions are of course not completely out of touch, nor are they pure fantasies. The visions explore and/or extrapolate certain societal, economic, political, cultural or scientific evolutions. Based on these extrapolations, artists, designers and architects create a world, each in their own way: from drawings, models and photo­ montages, speculative objects and stories, to data visualizations, sculptures, installations and film.

In context Future Fictions mainly presents the visions/fictions of artists, designers and architects. Even so, it acknowledges that thinking and communicating about the future is not a practice that is exclusive to artists, designers and architects. Historically the privilege of a small group of public figures, today a number of professions are involved in future thinking and imaging: scientists, philosophers, entrepreneurs, risk assessors, trend forecasters, policy makers and politicians, not to forget futurists, futurologists, future consultants and future strategic planners. All, driven by their agendas, have made thinking about the future their business to a greater or lesser extent, implicitly or explicitly. The visions the artists, designers, and architects present in Future Fictions therefore unquestionably relate to, or are inspired and informed by, and often developed in close relationship with these players outside of the field of art, design and architecture.

Horizonten van waarden Wars van een probleemoplossende pragmatische aanpak en inkadering van toekomstdenken bieden de complexe toekomstvisies in Future Fictions horizonten in plaats van blauwdrukken. Zo wordt de vraag of iets wenselijk is of niet belangrijker dan de vraag of een scenario wel mogelijk, realistisch of aanneembaar is. Met andere woorden de waarden die in de toekomstvisies verdedigd, bevraagd of uitgedaagd worden, staan centraal. De visies zelf zijn fictie en horen dat ook te blijven.

Realistische fictie of feit/ficties Maar de ficties zijn natuurlijk niet uit de lucht geplukt. Het zijn geen zuivere fantasieën. De visies gaan in op bepaalde trends en/of vergroten bepaalde maatschappelijke, economische, politieke, culturele of wetenschappelijke evoluties uit. Aan de hand van die extrapolaties wordt een wereld opgeroepen en dat doen kunstenaars, designers en architecten elk op een eigen manier: van tekeningen, modellen, fotomontages, speculatieve objecten en verhaallijnen, tot datavisualisaties, sculpturen, installaties en film.

In context Terwijl in Future Fictions vooral de visies/ficties van kunstenaars, ontwerpers en architecten aan bod komen, erkennen we dat het nadenken over de toekomst en het communiceren van visies/ficties niet uitsluitend een praktijk van kunstenaars, ontwerpers en archi­ tecten is. Historisch gezien het voorrecht van een kleine groep prominenten, zijn er vandaag de dag een reeks beroepen opgetrokken rond toekomstdenken en visualisatie. Wetenschappers, filosofen, ondernemers, verzekeraars, trendonderzoekers, beleidsmakers, politici en niet te vergeten futuristen, futurologen, toekomstadviseurs en strategische toekomstplanners hebben allen, gedreven door hun agenda, van het nadenken over de toekomst hun job gemaakt, parttime of fulltime, impliciet of expliciet. De voorgestelde visies van kunstenaars, ontwerpers en architecten in Future Fictions verhouden zich tot deze praktijken, ze zijn er door geïnformeerd, soms door geïnspireerd, en vaak zelfs ontwikkeld in nauwe samenwerking met deze toekomstdenkers die opereren buiten het veld van kunst, design en architectuur.

About future literacy In the face of this multitude of future visions, we are presented with the crucial question: can we address these visions with a critical eye? In order to better understand and assess the different prevailing future visions and messages, one needs a more elaborate context, a research into what it means to think about and visualize the future, who is involved in this practice, what tools they use, what agendas they have and if and how these agendas reverberate in their practice. Future Fictions, in that sense, encourages the search for future literacy. Who sponsors the think tanks for the future and why? What does it mean when science fiction writers are granted access to a large technology company’s most recent research, so that it may be incorporated into their fiction? Whose agendas are being served when people are recruited via crowdsourcing techniques to voluntarily participate in just about anything, ranging from image recognition software to space research? But also: how can we compare reports from trend forecasters to critical future scenarios coming from speculative design or architecture? What is the effect and the scope of their visions/fictions? Future Fictions mainly offers visions/fictions from a Western perspective as these are the visions that we are confronted with the most. Of course, this does not mean that Future Fictions disclaims the existence of other perspectives, merely that it does not pretend to be encyclopedic in scope.

So what? Future visions/fictions that intend to spark debate (ask questions), rather than provide a concrete blueprint (offer answers) are often criticized because they supposedly ignore the problems of today which require solutions in the near future. However, these visions/ fictions play their role at another level: indeed, they investigate if we are still asking the right questions or they prepare us for a different way of thinking, a mental benchmark shift. Which contemporary visions of the future carry in them the promise of such a one effect? From the past we have learned that oftentimes, it is the images that look completely out of place, that are outrageously audacious or absurd that can generate a mental reboot. They have the power to bend perception into a certain direction. In other words, they create a new mental benchmark. Or, alternatively,

Over toekomstgeletterdheid In confrontatie met een veelheid aan toekomstvisies wordt de centrale vraag: kunnen we deze toekomstvisies kritisch benaderen? Het onderzoeken van wat nadenken over en het visualiseren van een toekomst betekent, wie dit doet, welke middelen hiervoor gebruikt worden, waarom ze dat doen, en welk effect dit dan heeft, biedt een ruimere context waarin we de verschillende toekomstvisies en boodschappen die circuleren beter kunnen begrijpen en naar waarde schatten. Het gaat met andere woorden over een zoektocht naar future-literacy of toekomstgeletterdheid. Wie sponsort de denktanken rond de toekomst en waarom? Wat betekent het als een groot technologiebedrijf sciencefiction­ schrijvers toegang verleent tot hun meest recente onderzoek om er vervolgens verhalen over te schrijven? Welke agenda’s worden gediend wanneer via crowdsourcingtechnieken mensen vrijwillig meewerken aan alles van beeldherkenningssoftware tot ruimteonderzoek? Maar ook: hoe kunnen we de rapporten van trend forecasters vergelijken met de kritische toekomstscenario’s uit speculatief design of architectuur? Wat is het bereik van hun visies/ficties? Future Fictions biedt vooral visies/ficties vanuit een westers perspectief; het zijn de visies waar we het vaakst mee geconfronteerd worden. Dit betekent uiteraard niet dat er geen andere perspectieven zijn; Future Fictions heeft niet de pretentie allesomvattend te zijn.

So what? Een vaak gehoorde kritiek op toekomstvisies/ficties die bedoeld zijn om discussie te genereren (vragen te stellen) eerder dan een concrete blauwdruk af te leveren (antwoorden te geven) is dat ze de problemen van vandaag die oplossingen vereisen op korte termijn, uit de weg gaan. Echter, ze spelen hun rol op een ander terrein: ze vragen immers of we nog wel de juiste vragen stellen, of ze bereiden ons voor op een ander gedachtenpatroon. Welke hedendaagse toekomstvisies hebben kans op een dergelijk effect? Uit het verleden kunnen we afleiden dat het vaak gaat om de beelden die compleet buitenwerelds lijken, ongehoord stoutmoedig zijn, of absurd. Ze genereren een mentale heropstart. Ze hebben de kracht om perceptie in een bepaalde richting om te buigen. Ze creëren met andere woorden een nieuw mentaal ijkpunt. Of ze

they encourage a completely opposite direction of thought. Either way, they have an impact that cannot be ignored; they are a catalyst for change. What role then, does a future thinker play? And what is or should be his relation to policy making? Or, to put it differently, what is the responsibility of the designer, artist, architect, or trend forecaster, futurist, scientist, risk assessor and insurance agent who authored these future visions/fictions?

Future Fictions in the Z33 context: Studio Future Future Fictions results from Z33’s Studio Future, a research studio dedicated to the wide field of future thinking from the disciplines of art, design and architecture. Exhibition projects such as The Machine, Design beyond Production and Atelier à Habiter shed light on concrete aspects and trends in the changing relationship between designer/architect, producer and consumer. In the spring of 2015, Z33 will foreground the work of designer Konstantin Grcic in the exhibition Panorama. In this context, Future Fictions takes a step back: from a critical point-of-view, it researches who formulates which visions and why, as well as the various roles artists and designers may assume in this process. Future Fictions thus investigates the process itself of future thinking and places it against a backdrop of values, wishes and ideals, and in doing so, connects to Z33’s exploration of our relation to another space, outer space, in Space Odyssey 2.0.

Of om het anders te formuleren: wat is de verantwoordelijkheid van de designer, kunstenaar, architect of trend forecaster, futurist, wetenschapper, risico-analist en verzekeringsagent die optreedt als auteur van de toekomstvisie/fictie?

Future Fictions in de Z33 context: Studio Future Future Fictions komt voort uit Z33’s Studio Future; een onderzoeksstudio die zich vanuit de disciplines kunst, vormgeving en architectuur toespitst op het brede veld van toekomstdenken. In tentoonstellingsprojecten zoals The Machine, Design beyond Production en Atelier à Habiter kwamen concrete aspecten en tendensen in de veranderende relatie tussen ontwerper/architect, producent en consument aan bod. In de lente van 2015 zet Z33 in de tentoonstelling Panorama het werk van ontwerper Konstantin Grcic in de kijker. Future Fictions zet in die context een stap terug: met kritische blik onderzoekt het wie wat formuleert, waarom en welke rol kunstenaars en ontwerpers in dit proces van toekomstmaken kunnen opnemen. Future Fictions neemt het proces van toekomstdenken zelf onder de loep en plaatst het tegen een horizon van waarden, wensen en idealen. Het tentoonstellingsproject sluit op die manier aan bij Z33’s exploratie van onze verhouding tot een andere ruimte, dé ruimte, in Space Odyssey 2.0.

Bureau Europa / Lara Schrijver Docutopia — 2014

— nl Docutopia is de filmische her­­interpretatie van een script geschreven door architectuurhistorica Lara Schrijver op uitnodiging van Bureau Europa. In het script komen het ontwerp, de blauwdruk, het masterplan en het verbeelde in relatie tot architectuur uitgebreid aan bod. De documentaire is een inleiding op de evolutie van het ontwerp en de onderliggende structuren die vernieuwing mogelijk maken en alternatieven verbeelden. Het narratief is opgebouwd uit fragmenten van film en retrofuturistisch documentatiemateriaal uit de 20e eeuw. Het verhaal en de geschiedenis van Utopia worden in Docutopia verteld via thema’s als de relatie tussen mens en machine, tussen maak­bare orde en disruptieve chaos, tussen technologische processen en sociale fragmentatie. Met Docutopia betrekt Future Fictions op die manier de beelden uit de architectuur- en film­ geschiedenis die vandaag zowel als bron, referentie en middel gebruikt worden in heel wat praktijken van toekomstdenken en – visualisatie.

— en Docutopia is the filmic reinterpretation of the script written by architectural historian Lara Schrijver at the invitation of Bureau Europa. The script explores the roles that design, the blueprint, the master plan, and the imaginary play in relation to architecture. The documentary is an introduction to the evolution of design and the underlying structures that facilitate innovation and depict alternatives. The narrative is composed of film excerpts and retro-futuristic documentation material, mainly from the 20th century. Docutopia relates the story and history of Utopia through different themes, such as the relationship between man and machine, malleable order and disruptive chaos, tech­no­­logical process and social fragmentation. With Docutopia, Future Fictions draws in those images from the history of architecture and film, which serve both as a source, reference and tool for numerous present-day practices of future thinking and imaging.

— nl New City is een verzameling skylines uit de nabije toekomst. Op zeer gedetailleerde wijze wordt een speculatief urbanisme weergegeven, een uitvergrote versie van het heden waarin we nieuwe culturele trends en politieke, economische en ecologische krachten kunnen projecteren. Foto’s van wereldwijde expedities waarin men op zoek ging naar deze opkomende fenomenen en zwakke signalen, werden nauwkeurig aan elkaar gebreid en verder ontwikkeld om zo elke skyline vorm te geven. Op die manier balanceert New City tussen het reële en imaginaire, het documentaire en visionaire, daar waar speculatieve ficties een manier worden om een wereld te verkennen die het heden moeilijk kan vatten. De auteurs Jeff Noon, Pat Cadigan en Tim Maughan werden uitgenodigd om de skylines te bewonen, de personages en culturen leven in te blazen, en de straten en ruimtes vorm te geven aan de hand van een suggestief verhaalfragment.

— en New City is a series of animated skylines of the near future. In intricate detail they depict a speculative urbanism, an exaggerated version of the present, in which we can project new cultural trends, environmental, political and economic forces. Photographs taken on expeditions around the world documenting these emerging phenomena and weak signals have been meticulously stitched together and extrapolated to form each city skyline. In this way New City slips between the real and the imagined, between the documentary and the visionary, where speculative fictions become a way of exploring a world that the everyday struggles to grasp. To accompany the animations, the authors Jeff Noon, Pat Cadigan and Tim Maughan have been invited to inhabit each skyline, to breathe life into its characters and cultures and give form to its streets and spaces through a suggestive narrative fragment.

— nl A Rematerialisation of Systems: Industries zijn een reeks fictieve industriële ruimtes: de vier composities representeren een chemische fabriek (Chemical Plant), een mijnschacht (Mine Shaft), een deeltjesversneller (Super Collider) en een gas­depot (Gas Depot). Het zijn voor El Ultimo Grito ‘collapscapes’, geografische entiteiten ontstaan door het artificieel samenbrengen, inkorten of verdichten van tijd en ruimte van, in dit geval, pro­ductie­processen. De modellen passen in en bouwen ver­der op de Imaginary Architectures reeks, ruimtelijke­uitdrukkingen die herkenbare elementen van gekende plaatsen bevatten en die de vraag stellen hoe het zou zijn om in die ruimtes te bewegen en te leven.

— en A Rematerialisation of Systems: Industries is a series of fictional industrial spaces: the four compositions represent a chemical plant, a mine shaft, a super collider and a gas depot. They are what El Ultimo Grito has coined ‘collapscapes’; geographical entities that result from artificially compressing time and space of, in this case, production processes. The models are part of and continue to build on the Imaginary Architectures series; spatial expressions which contain commonplace elements of familiar spaces that call upon us to imagine what it would be like to navigate and inhabit their interiors.

“One of the most beautiful recent examples of model aesthetics is El Ultimo Grito’s Imaginary Architectures (2011). The project consists of glass models of imaginary architectural schemes, semiformed physical ‘propositions for the social, material and spiritual elements of cities.’ The objects represent a house, a station, a cinema, an airport, and a love hotel. They are like a physical version of John Hejduk’s drawings – imprecise, evocative, metaphorical, sensual anchors for a poetic vision of how a city could be. (…). These capture the full potential of the aesthetics of unreality through their unabashed celebration of the prop as something coexisting in physical space and in the viewer’s imagination at the same moment. In A Rematerial­isation of Systems: Industries staat de industriële architectuur centraal. De glazen composities maken de typologische kenmerken van een bepaald model van industriële architectuur zichtbaar. Ze bevragen zo de fysieke taal van de systemen die ze vertegenwoordigen; systemen waarin productiesites samen­ gevoegd werden in een mechanisch proces dat het nieuwe model voor efficiëntie werd.

In A Rematerialisation of Systems: Industries El Ultimo Grito focuses on industrial architecture. The glass compositions depict the typological characteristics of a model of industrial architecture. In so doing, they question the physical language of the systems they represent; systems in which production sites were merged in a mechanized process that became a new model of efficiency.

— nl In een schijnbaar eindeloze stroom van constructie en deconstructie verrijzen wisselende modellen die gecreëerd worden aan de hand van alledaagse gebruiksvoorwerpen. Ze suggereren een veelheid aan landschappen, van een besneeuwd bos tot een modernistisch appartement en een futuristisch landschap; structuren voor een samenleving in transitie – symbolen van de tijdelijkheid.

They suggest a multitude of landscapes, from a snow-covered forest to a modernist apartment and a futuristic landscape; structures for a society in transition – symbols of impermanence.

“Hans Op de Beeck’s film ‘Staging Silence (2)’ is based around abstract, archetypal settings that lingered in the memory of the artist as the common denominator of the many similar public places he has experienced. (…). Memory images are disproportionate mixtures of concrete information and fantasies, and in this film they materialize before the spectator’s eyes through anonymous tinkering and improvising hands. Arms and hands appear and disappear at random, manipulating banal objects, scale representations and artificial lighting into alienating yet recognisable locations. — nl New Tribal Labyrinth is een reeks van werken waarin thema’s zoals arbeidsorganisatie, machtsstructuren en revolutie gelinkt worden aan de eindigheid van de grond­­stoffen op aarde en de daaruit voortvloeiende nood om zelfvoorzienend te zijn. Het werk suggereert een nieuwe wereldorde, een samenleving bevolkt door ingebeelde stammen. In deze wereld zien we een terugkeer naar landbouw en industrie en een opnieuw aanhalen van onze relatie tot materie en materialen. Rituelen worden geherwaardeerd en spelen opnieuw een belangrijke rol in

— en New Tribal Labyrinth is a series of works in which themes such as the organization of labour, the structures of power and revolution are linked to the depletion of the world’s resources and the subsequent need for self-sufficiency. It suggests a new world order, a society inhabited by imaginary tribes. This world will see a return to farming and industry, and a re-establishment of our relationship to matter and materials. Rituals will be revalued and will play an important role in society once more.

Industrie New Tribal Labyrinth wil de fabrieken en installaties van de Industriële Revolutie opnieuw interpreteren en herwaarderen door het creëren van sculpturale/ technische installaties op grote schaal, gemaakt op een geïmproviseerde manier met hedendaagse materialen: hoogovens, metaalgieterijen en chemische installaties, textielmolens en keramische werkplaatsen. Drill Nouveau, 2014; Mondriaan, 2012 en Donut 2012 zijn enkele voorbeelden van deze industriële monumenten. Op het eerste gezicht is het niet meteen duidelijk of deze objecten deel uitmaken van een postapocalyptische overlevings­ strategie, of dat ze daarentegen een nieuwe utopische manier van duurzaam produceren voorstellen.

Thus, objects for farming, industry and rituals are the three main bodies of work of this huge ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’.



Industry

New Tribal Labyrinth wants to reinterpret and revalue the factories and installations of the Industrial Revolution by creating large scale sculptural/technical installations, made in an improvised style and with contemporary materials: blast furnaces and foundries, refineries and chemical installations, textile mills and cera­mics workshops. Drill Nouveau, 2014; Mondriaan, 2012 and Donut 2012 are examples of these industrial monuments. At first sight, it is not immediately clear if these are part of a postapocalyptic survival strategy, or instead represent a new utopian way of durable production.

It’s a kind of relationship with Arts and Crafts movement, more than 100 years ago, when this movement was against industry to save manual labour and craftsmanship; now, we are steps further and I fight like Arts and Crafts to keep the industry in our society.” — Joep van Lieshout13

Landbouw Landbouw is een tweede belangr­ ijke pijler van New Tribal Labyrinth. Atelier Van Lieshout creëert boerderijen voor de toekomst, maar ook van de pre­historie, het jaar nul, de Middel­ eeuwen, de Gouden Eeuw en de naoorlogse moderne utopieën. Het uiteindelijke doel is om een megaboerderij te creëren die alle individuele boerderijen met elkaar verbindt via tunnels, gangen, deuren en luikjes. Wanneer de bezoeker deze ultieme boerderij binnenwandelt, begint hij zo aan een reis door­heen een labyrint van tijden, vergeten geschiedenis, hoop, familie, utopie, zelfvoorzienend zijn, ontwerp en deviatie. De eerste in de reeks was Hagioscoop, gedateerd in het jaar nul. Parallel hieraan werd een hoogtechnologische boerderij van de toekomst ontworpen: Insect Farm, waarin insecten als voedzame en kostenefficiënte voedselbronnen met een beperkte ecologische voetafdruk centraal staan. Insect Farm werd als commissieopdracht gemaakt voor REcentre (centre for sustainable design) en Z33 - KUNST IN DE OPEN RUIMTE. Food Reaktor is een object dat een reactorvat toont waarin organische substanties zoals algen, insecten, vetten en dergelijke vermengd worden tot nieuwe en

Farming Farming is a second pillar of New Tribal Labyrinth. Atelier Van Lieshout creates farms for the future, but also farms from the pre-history, the year zero, the Middle Ages, the Golden Age, and post-war modernist utopia. The final goal is to create a farm larger than life, a compilation made up of all the individual farms, and connected by tunnels, corridors, doors and hatches. By entering this farm, visitors will engage in labyrinth-like time-travel through the ages, past history, hope, family, utopia, self-sufficiency, design and deviancy. Hagioscoop is the first of this series, a large cross-shaped diorama set in the imaginary date of ‘year zero’. In parallel, a highly technological farm of the future was created: Insect Farm, which focuses on insects as a nutritious and cost-effective food source with a small ecological footprint. Insect Farm was a commission of REcentre (centre for sustainable design) and Z33 – ART IN PUBLIC SPACE. Food Reaktor is an object representing a reactor where organic substances such as algae, insects, fats and so on can be mixed into new and edible products. Food Reaktor at the same time also functions as an image of worship. The size and organic shape lend it the status

Een derde belangrijke pijler van New Tribal Labyrinth is het domein van rites en rituelen. Joep van Lieshout beschrijft in een interview met Marcel Mauer in Abitare #523:

A third important pillar of New Tribal Labyrinth is the domain of rites and rituals. In an interview with Marcel Mauer in Abitare #523, Joep van Lieshout explains:

“Once supplies are exhausted, society will see a worsening of the relations between people and an increase of their survival instincts. The question to me is whether such radical changes, which are coupled with violence but which may also lead to a new and improved society are good or bad. Possibly, groups of people will start organizing themselves into tribes instead of via countries and nationalities. A new tribal order will form; in the meantime, Atelier Van Lieshout is already working on objects for these imaginary tribes: monuments to be worshipped, cannibalistic sacrificial equipment, and equipment for daily use.” — Joep Van Lieshout14 Een van deze tribale beelden is Lebensborn, ook wel Lebens­ brunnen (een bron van eeuwige jeugd) of Lebensraum (levensgebied – habitat) genoemd. De geïnterviewden waren vrij om een antwoord te geven, zolang ze dit maar deden vanuit een positieve en optimistische stemming. We zien highrise appartementen, keurig verzorgde tuinen, kronkelende paden; een schijnbaar paradijs van zon, joggers en fietsers. De interviews lijken zo wel reclamefilmpjes voor een nieuwe wereld; eentje waar vooral ingespeeld wordt op de waarden en wensen van de gegoede middenklasse.

Compile-a-child is a series of 34 children’s drawings and stories that lead us to a transhuman, technoprogressive world. — nl The Xijing Men is een collectief van drie kunstenaars: Tsuyoshi Ozawa uit Japan, Chen Shaoxiong uit China en Gimhongsok uit Zuid-Korea. Samen vormen ze de culturele delegatie van de fictieve stad Xijing, een ingebeelde politieke entiteit in Oost-Azië. De Chinese karakters verduidelijken de naam: ‘xi’ betekent westers, en ‘jing’ staat voor hoofdstad. Xijing staat zo voor ‘westerse hoofdstad’ en speelt in op het feit dat er historisch gezien belangrijke ‘hoofdsteden’ zijn in het noorden (Beijing), zuiden (Nanjing) en oosten (Tokyo of Dongjing in het Chinees), maar niet in het westen. In Hoofdstuk 4: I Love Xijing – The Daily Life of the Xijing Presidents traceren de Xijing Men de historische iteraties van de term ‘westerse hoofdstad’, geven ze een inzicht in de voornaamste nationale ondernemingen op vlak van agricultuur (tomaten in een kast laten groeien), wetgeving (het recht om samen een biertje te drinken), ruimtelijke planning (wegsnijden van stukken uit een watermeloen – in het Chinees ‘xigua’ of ‘western melon’; een woordspeling op Xijing) en defensie. De video eindigt met de productie van Xijing geld (XIP), geprint op Kleenex.

In Chapter 4: I Love Xijing – The Daily Life of the Xijing Presidents they trace the historical iteration of the term ‘western capital’, offer insight into major national schemes such as agricultural production (growing tomatoes in a closet), legislation (the right to enjoy a beer together), urban planning (slicing up a watermelon – translated as ‘xigua’ in Chinese, or also referred to as ‘western melon’, and as such, a pun on Xijing) and defense. The video concludes with the Xijing Men producing Xijing currency (XIP) printed on sheets of Kleenex.

Curious Rituals brengt de huidige ‘collectie’ non-verbale handelingen en rituelen in kaart in het boek Curious Rituals en speculeert over de toekomst ervan in de design fictie film: A Digital Tomorrow.

— nl In Not Here, Not Now presenteren Dunne & Raby verschillende portalen of interfaces uit een alternatieve wereld. De interfaces komen uit de wereld van de ‘digitarians’, één van de koninkrijken uit hun United Micro Kingdoms project. Die wereld wordt gekenmerkt door neoliberalisme en de centrale rol van digitale technologieën. De titels van de grote prints geven een hint over de functie en het doel van de voorgestelde interface in die samenleving. Op die manier zijn de interfaces zelf een portaal, een startpunt om de alternatieve wereld van de digitarians te begrijpen. Het werk gaat dus niet zozeer over de interfaces zelf, of de handelingen die men ermee doet, maar over de wereld waar ze deel van uitmaken, de wereld die ze oproepen en de waarden die in die wereld gangmaker zijn.

The interfaces belong to the digitarian world; one of the kingdoms of the United Micro Kingdoms project, characterized by neoliberalism and digital technology. The titles of the large prints hint at the function and purpose of these interfaces in that given society. The interfaces act as portals to the digitarian world: the work as such is not so much about the interfaces themselves, nor about the actions one performs with them, but rather about the society of which they are an integral part, the world they evoke and the values and mores that make that world go round.

The United Micro Kingdoms (UmK) is divided into four super-shires inhabited by Digitarians, Bioliberals, Anarcho-evolutionists and Communo-nuclearists. Each county is an experimental zone, free to develop its own form of governance, economy and lifestyle. Digitarians depend on digital technology and all its implicit totalitarianism — tagging, metrics, total surveillance, tracking, data logging and 100% transparency. Their society is organised entirely by market forces; citizen and consumer are the same. For them, nature is there to be used up as necessary. They are governed by technocrats, or algorithms — no one is entirely sure, or even cares — as long as everything runs smoothly and people are presented with choices, even if illusionary.

(...) rather than thinking about architecture, products, and the environment, we start with laws, ethics, political systems, social beliefs, values, fears, and hopes, and how these can be translated into material expressions, embodied in material culture, becoming little bits of another world that function as synecdoches.” — Dunne & Raby 24

Dunne & Raby onderzoeken hoe designtalen die gebruikt worden om de toekomst te visualiseren, soms hun potentieel om de verbeelding van de kijker te activeren, beperken. Dit doordat ze de waarden van die alternatieve toekomstscenario’s in zeer specifieke hedendaagse culturele kaders plaatsen. De beelden van Not Here, Not Now experimenteren daarom met vervreemding, ambiguïteit en openheid. Ze exploreren hoe verschillende realiteitslagen geconceptualiseerd, vormgegeven, gepresenteerd en waargenomen worden.

Dunne & Raby are interested in how design languages used to visually represent futures can sometimes reduce and limit their potential to engage the viewer’s imagination by locating the values contained in these alternative future scenarios within very specific contemporary cultural frameworks. The images of Not Here, Not Now therefore experiment with estrangement, ambiguity and openness. They explore how different layers of realism are conceptualized, crafted, presented and perceived.

— nl In Blueprints for the Unknown worden zeven projecten gepresenteerd van Superflux, Tobias Revell, Raphael Kim, Koby Barhad, Cohen Van Balen, Studio NAND en David Benqué. Alle projecten stellen scenario’s voor waarin nieuwe (en nog onbestaande) evoluties in biotechnologie op structurele wijze ingebed zijn in het financiële, politieke, culturele, sociale en economische weefsel van een imaginaire samenleving. Ze bevragen daarmee de huidige en toekomstige ideeën en idealen die onze samenleving en ons als menselijke soort daarbinnen, vormgeven. Recente ontwikkelingen in de synthetische biologie maken het ontwerpen van nieuwe levensvormen tot een steeds reëlere mogelijkheid. Maar, is de natuur het wel eens met het industriële paradigma waar wij ons als mensen prettig bij voelen? Levende organismen zijn instabiel, veranderlijk en context-specifiek. Each of these projects propose scenarios in which new (and as yet non-exis­ ting) evolutions in biotechnology are structurally embedded in the financial, political, cultural, social and economic fabric of an imaginary society. They question the current and future ideas and ideals that shape our society and us as human beings within. Recent advances in synthetic biology are making the design of new life forms an increasingly real possibility. Driven by an engineering approach to biology, the future scientist/designer is envisioned as an architect of life, creating living organisms from a library of standardized and replicable parts. However, life may or may not agree with the industrial para­ digm we feel comfortable with. Living organisms are unstable, mutable and context specific. They are subject to evolution, mutation and symbiosis. Additionally, once science gets out of the lab and into the world, it becomes part of much more substantial systems such as economics, politics and human beliefs – with surprising outcomes for better or for worse.

— nl Disaster Playground is een platform dat onderzoek doet naar toekomstige ruimtecatastrofes en het ontwerp van de procedures die de risico’s op dergelijke catastrofes moeten bepalen en het beantwoorden ervan in goede banen moeten leiden. Ben Hayoun werkte voor dit project samen met experts van het NASA, Near Earth Objects (NEO) team, het Disaster and Rescue Assistance team (TEEX) in Disaster City, het Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Instituut en een sterrencast van componisten en schrijvers. Ze verzamelde verschillende voorbeelden van rampbemiddelingen, onverwachte systeemfouten en tegenslagen in het ruimteprogramma. Ben Hayoun ging op zoek naar die momenten waar mens en technologie op schitterende wijze ‘falen’, de momenten die ons doen nadenken over het maakproces en de personen achter onze ontdekkingen. De langspeeldocumentaire Disaster Playground (release in maart 2015) traceert de huidige procedures die gevolgd zouden moeten worden wanneer een asteroïde de aarde dreigt te raken. Working with experts in NASA Near Earth Objects (NEO), Disaster and Rescue Assistance Team (TEEX) at Disaster City, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) and with an all-star team of compo­ sers and writers, designer of experiences Nelly Ben Hayoun collected disaster mitigation responses, unexpected failure systems and instances of adversity in the space program: those points exactly where technology and humans could beautifully ‘fail’ and cause us to reflect on the making of and the actors behind our discoveries. The feature length documentary Disaster Playground (release March 2015) follows the real-life procedures in place in the event of an asteroid collision with the earth. Through interviews, reflections and re-enactments by a team of casted space experts the audience is introduced to the main players in a chain of command that runs from the SETI Institute and the NASA Head­ quarters to the United Nations. Hollywood relied on Bruce Willis and a jumbo drill to save the world in Armageddon, but who

Disaster Playground is a platform of punks, its main characters have the ability to produce epic and surreal experiences. Een tentoonstellingsversie van de film Disaster Playground wordt in Future Fictions gepresenteerd in dialoog met een landschap van sets en props die essentieel zijn in de procedures in geval van een ruimte­ramp. Met Baudrillard’s tekst ‘America’ als vertrekpunt, gaat Ben Hayoun op zoek naar de betekenis van ‘the American Dream’ en de behoefte om die laatste grens te bereiken in de organisatorische psyche van NASA.

An exhibition version of the film Disaster Playground is presented in Future Fictions, in dialogue with a landscape of sets and props essential in the procedures deployed in the event of a space emergency. Taking Baudrillard’s text ‘America’ as a starting point, Ben Hayoun investigates the role of the American Dream and the need to reach the final frontier in the organizational psyche at NASA.

For the duration of the exhibition, FoAM occupies the Futures Lab where they invite visitors to explore what it might mean to prototype and rehearse possible futures in the present. While in residence, FoAM collects and shares materials for and from their Futurist Fieldguide, a manual for those interested in trying their hands at scenario building, design fiction and other world-construction practices. Arne Hendriks and Monnik in the Futures Lab Het uiteindelijke, meest extreme, logische gevolg van de huidige verstedelijkingspatronen is het ontstaan van één stad voor de hele wereldpopulatie. Maar, terwijl we onbewust die eindvorm wensen, lijken we blind en onbeholpen in het proces ernaartoe. Wat als we met z’n allen, de hele wereldbevolking, vrijwillig en bewust naar die ene stad toe bewegen? Wat als we vandaag zouden starten met het plannen van die grote reis? Kunstenaar Arne Hendriks en het Monnik collectief raken met dit onderzoek verschillende bestaande trends aan op vlak van migratie, groeiende wereldbevolking en urbanisatie. Samen met een team experten in het Futures Lab onderzoeken, verbeelden en visualiseren ze een evacuatieplan voor de stad Hasselt. Dit nieuwe onderzoek kan begrepen worden als de proloog op 8 billion city: een speculatief onderzoek naar de condities voor en voorwaarden van het creëren van één stad voor de hele wereldpopulatie in 2025.

The ultimate logical extreme of present urbanization patterns is the emergence of one city for the entire world population. But while humanity unconsciously yearns for this ultimate state of being, we are heading towards it in a clumsy, blind way. What if all of us, the whole world population, were to – voluntarily and consciously - move towards such a city? What if we start to plan our journey today? Touching upon and extrapolating existing trends of migration flows, the growing world population and urban development, artist Arne Hendriks and the Monnik collective bring together a team of experts in the Futures Lab to research, imagine and visualize an evacuation plan for the city of Hasselt. This new body of research can be understood as the preface to 8 billion city; a speculative research into the premises of creating one city for the entire human population in 2025.

The Extrapolation Factory neemt het Futures Lab in met een tweedaagse workshop rond deze vragen.

How will we live 30, 50, or 100 years into the future? What new benefits will we enjoy, and what sacrifices will we have to make? How will our designed artifacts represent us as people, as a culture? The Extrapolation Factory occupies the Futures Lab to hold a two-day workshop centered around these questions.

The Extrapolation Factory, opgericht door Chris Woebken en Elliott P. The Extrapolation Factory, co-founded by Chris Woebken and Elliott P. In the context of Futures Lab and in collaboration with the public school for architecture brussels, Pieterjan Ginckels organizes a Speed Trip through the car parks of Brussels.

“In our time, and especially in our city, parking garages are both hated and loved, booming and going extinct. Black holes, back rooms. Invisible monsters and aggressively inspiring architectural artefacts. Air pockets and sign systems. Panoramic in oblivion.” — Pieterjan Ginckels Met deze Speed Trip plaatst hij de ideeën en concepten achter Speedism in de praktijk en in de wereld: de waarde van snelheid – en oppervlakkigheid in ervaring – wordt tot het uiterste gedreven, resulterend in een copy-paste landschap van iconen en elementen, bouwsteentjes van een megalomane beeldconstructie; een ver doorgedreven collapscape. In de woorden van Pieterjan Ginckels: “Deze SPEED TRIP is deel van een onderzoeksproject SPEED SPACE waarin ik kijk naar de relatie tussen snelheid en de manier waarop de praktijk en de architectuur vorm krijgen en beïnvloed worden door een in toenemende mate gethematiseerde, spectaculaire en versnellende maatschappij. With this Speed Trip, Ginckels puts the ideas and concepts behind Speedism into practice and into the real world: the value of speed – and superficiality in experience – is pushed to the limit, resulting in a copy-paste landscape of icons and elements, building bricks of a megalomaniac image construction; a collapscape pushed to the extreme. In the words of Pieterjan Ginckels: “This SPEED TRIP is part of a research project called SPEED SPACE in which I look at the relation between speed and the way the practice and its architecture are shaped and informed by an increasingly theme-based, spectacular, and accelerated society. The changes I look into occur both at the level of mediation (blog culture, archi-pornography) and theory as well as styles and form (non-stop remix, microfutures, the hyperreal). [They are exemplified in] buildings and realities

Pantopicon in the Futures Lab Wat als politieke partijen niet langer het organiserend principe zijn en bestuur- en regeerperiodes niet langer een lineair gegeven? Wat als lokaal en globaal bestuur vervlechten? Wat als een participatieve democratie meer van burgers vraagt dan enkel een stem? … In Agoras, een tweedaags werkatelier zal een multidisciplinair gezelschap zich o.l.v. Nik Baerten (co-founder Pantopicon) een duik wagen in de toekomst van politiek en democratie. Vanuit verre fictieve toekomsten zal worden teruggeblikt op de komende decennia. Deelnemers zullen op basis van hun kennis en verbeelding objecten en verhalen ontwerpen als getuigenissen van fictieve bestuurssystemen van morgen: dromen en nachtmerries, tastbaar gemaakt, als katalysatoren voor verder debat. Ruim 10 jaar ondersteunt Pantopicon publieke en private organisaties in het verkennen van hun lange termijn toekomsten. Op speculatieve en analytische basis ontwerpt ze tools en processen om veranderingsgericht debat te stimuleren en te vertalen naar visies, strategieën, producten en diensten. De studio werkt vanuit de overtuiging dat niet enkel onze keuzes vandaag de wereld van morgen bepalen, maar onze beeldvorming over morgen tevens onze keuzes vandaag.

What if political parties no longer constitute the organizing principle? What if governing periods are no longer a linear given? What if the local and global administrations become intertwined? What if participative democracy demands more of its citizens than just a vote? … In Agoras, a two-day work atelier, Nik Baerten (co-founder of Pantopicon) will take a multidisciplinary group on a trip into the future of politics and democracy. From distant fictional futures, they will look back on the coming decades. Using their knowledge and imagination, participants will design objects and stories that bear witness to the fictional governing systems of tomorrow: dreams and nightmares, made tangible, as catalysts for further debate. For more than 10 years, Pantopicon has supported public and private organizations in their search for long term futures. With a speculative and analytical approach, they design tools and processes to stimulate change focused debate, which translates into visions, strategies, products and services. The studio is convinced that our choices today determine the world of tomorrow, but also that – by the same token - our future imaging affects the choices we make today.

UHasselt in the Futures Lab Tijdens de herfst van 2014 gaan Prof. dr. ir. Oswald Devisch en doctoraatstudente Sarah Martens op zoek naar nieuwe methoden om diverse actoren te betrekken in het ruimtelijk beheer van een wijk. In het nabijgelegen Godsheide verkennen ze samen met bewoners welke toekomst de huidige veranderingen kunnen brengen. Ze gaan na wat die veranderingen precies zijn, hoe men hierover denkt en welke rol men hierin kan spelen. Ze formuleren geen toekomst­ visie als in een plan of beleidsdocument, maar verkennen de toekomst vanuit wat nu speelt. Ze bedenken samen met bewoners wat nu kan veranderen en welke rol zij hier zelf vandaag in kunnen opnemen. Samen visualiseren en testen ze deze nieuwe ideeën of andere mogelijkheden.  Prof. dr. ir. Oswald Devisch en Sarah Martens maken deel uit van de onderzoeksgroep ArcK van de Faculteit Architectuur en Kunst aan de Universiteit Hasselt. Ze voeren fundamenteel en toegepast onderzoek uit waarbij de slogan van de faculteit, ‘Design for Life’, de leidraad vormt: met een multidisciplinaire aanpak en de mens als centraal element richten ze zich op maatschappelijk belangrijke thema’s. In the fall of 2014 Prof. dr. ir. Oswald Devisch and PhD student Sarah Martens will go in search of new methods to involve a diverse range of agents in the spatial management of a district. In the nearby village of Godsheide, they will explore, together with the community residents, to which future the current transformations might lead. They will gain insight in these (spatial) transformations, how they are perceived and the various roles one could assume. The idea is not to formulate a future vision in the format of a plan or a policy document, but to explore the future by building upon ongoing transformations. In collaboration with the community residents they will reflect on what can change now, and which role they could play today. Together, they will visualize and test envisioned futures.  Prof. dr. ir. Oswald Devisch and Sarah Martens are members of the research group ArcK of the Faculty of Architecture and Art at Hasselt University. The group conducts fundamental and applied research modelled on the Faculty’s slogan ‘Design for Life’: adopting a multidisciplinary and human centered approach, the group addresses important societal topics. Key concepts for the research group are: design for experience,
