WP4 Water technology as a tool for sustainable regional water supply • wat is de potentie van deze technieken? • welke bezwaren moeten worden ondervangen? • 2 projecten 8. ASR as a tool for regional water supply: potential, hurdles and solutions – PhD VU 9 .Potential of desalination and novel abstraction techniques for regional water supply – KWR & TNO 1 AIO onderzoek en 1 staf/postdoc project
Salinization of fresh water abstraction points in two branches of the Rhine estuary due to low river flow Current situation (2003)
Low river flow (W+ scenario)

Adaptive strategy (2): Desalination Application of reversed osmosis or membrane filtration Already put in place at one brackish well field (Oasen) Drawbacks • high energy consumption • membrane concentrate (brine) has to be disposed of Environmental impacts?
Pilot project seawater desalination 15 m3/h (Evides)
12
Adaptive strategy (3): Dual abstraction of ground water Fresh holder concept (pilot project) – Current practice: groundwater abstraction from a small fresh water lens overlying brackish groundwater (coastal areas) – Risk of upconing of brackish groundwater – Solution: dual extraction from the fresh water lens and the underlying brackish water layer – Desalination techniques to treat the brackish water; concentrate is disposed of in deep (saline) aquifer – Result: upconing of brackish water reversed, stable fresh water lens, sustainable extraction possible
Upconing of brackish ground water

Adaptive strategies (4): Flexible intake strategy and multiple sources
5
6
Flexible intake of river water depending on availability (river flow) and water quality; storage of raw water in reservoir Temporary storage of treated water in suitable aquifer to match peak demands But: be aware of water quality impacts!
