Bemesting
1 Manure application
Storage of farmyard manure with a gangway for a wheel barrow
Excessive fertilization sometimes led to animal health problems. High concentrations of K in grass and an associated decreased intake of MgO by dairy cows could lead to grass tetany.
Liquid manure was often spread on plots near the farm, with the risk of applying to much K and N on those fields
Goede bemesting is nodig voor veel en goed gras maar ook voor de gezondheid van het vee Optimal fertilization increases grass yield and grass quality and contributes to animal health
Zodenbemesting verplicht om ammoniakemissie te beperken Environmental legislation stimulated development of improved systems for manure and slurry application
Sleepslangsysteem grotere werkbreedtes en minder structuurschade Filling the slurry applicator with a long tube and an applicator with a wide working width decreases the risk of damage of soil structure

Bemesting
2 Manure application
Eerste stalmeststrooiers: forse arbeidsbesparing breedte 1,2 m One of the first manure spreaders with a working width of 1.2 m, what already meant quite a labour‐saving
Dung spreaders: high capacity and a correct and wide distribution
The introduction of cubicle houses led to slurry that was spread aboveground, currently prohibited by environmental legislation
As a consequence of environmental laws storage of slurry is needed for a longer period
Stalmeststrooiers, hoge capaciteit goede en brede verdeling
Kg kunstmest N / ha / jaar, Fertilizer Nitrogen kg / ha /year Kg kunstmest P2O5 /ha / jaar, Fertilizer, Phosphorus kg / ha / year Bron A. v.d. Ham 2014
Minder kunstmestgebruik melkveebedrijven in Nederland, door efficiënter gebruik dierlijke mest en scherpere gebruiksnormen Less fertilizer nitrogen and fertilizer phosphorus is applied by Dutch dairy farmers as a consequence of more efficient application of animal manure and standards for use
Moderne centrifugaalstrooiers goede verdeling en grote werkbreedte With modern centrifugal fertiliser spreaders a correct distribution of fertilisers and a large working width can be realised

Hooien
1
In the past hay was pushed together with many horses and people into big heaps in order to protect it against rain
Hooi op ruiters beperkte de veldperiode maar kostte veel arbeid Half‐dry hay put on a kind of tent constructed of sticks reduced the weather risk, but required more labour
Met komst opraapwagens vergroting capaciteit en minder arbeid With the introduction of the forage wagon the transport capacity enlarged while reducing labour input
Opslag los hooi in hooiberg, hooi werd getransporteerd met blazer en vervolgens mechanisch verdeeld Loose hay was blown in a hay stack and mechanically distributed
Met de balenpers werden kleine hanteerbare balen gemaakt With a traditional baler manageable bales were produced
Laden kleine balen is arbeidsintensief Loading small bales is a labour‐intensive job

Inkuilen
1
Ensiling
Graskuil maken met warme (Friese) methode met gronddek, zijkanten onbedekt, matige conservering met veel kantverlies Ensiling grass according to the warm (Friesian) method, whereby only soil was put on the top of the silage, this led to a moderate conservation and a lot of losses especially from the sides
Met PVC‐hoezen veel minder kantverlies Covering silage heaps completely with a PVC cover meant much lower side losses
Opkomst voordroogkuil, voordrogen op het land vanaf 1960 Ensiling of grass after a short field period became more and more popular after 1960
Goede kwaliteit met stevig aanrijden en luchtdicht afdekken kuil Ensuring good quality silage by compacting wilted grass and properly covering it with plastic Energie (VEM*) per kg droge stof, net energy value per kg of DM Ruw eiwit per kg droge stof, crude protein content per kg DM *1000 VEM = 6.9 MJ NEL (Mega Joules Netto Energie Lactatie)

Ensiling
By the Hardeland method fodder beet or molasses are added to grass
Maaikneusmethode in gebruik voor langer uitgegroeid gras Ensiling relatively old grass with a flail type forage harvester: grass is mown, bruised and loaded in one operation
Met veldhakselaar hoge capaciteit en goede conservering Self‐propelled choppers are nowadays successfully used for wilted grass
Gehakseld gras in sleufsilo, grote opslag, goede conservering. Compaction of chopped grass in a bunker silo usually leads to a high quality silage
Met grote balen goede conservering en flexibel bij voerrantsoen Large bales also lead to high quality silages and can flexibly be used in the cow’s diet
Opslag grote balen vereist ook zorg. Storage of large bales requires attention
Hardeland methode toevoegen van Voederbieten of melasse

Forage maize
Bron Wageningen UR ‐ PPO
Areaal snijmais is gegroeid van 500 ha naar 230.000 ha per jaar The area of forage maize increased from 500 ha to 230,000 ha per year
Ook bij mais inzaaien steeds grotere werkbreedtes For sowing maize also larger working widths are used
Bron Wageningen UR ‐ PPO
Rassenonderzoek heeft veel bijgedragen tot maisrassen met hogere opbrengsten en minder ziektes Variety research contributed a lot to maize varieties with higher yields and less diseases
Mechanische onkruidbestrijding maisteelt neemt af Mechanical weeding of forage maize decreases
Bron Wageningen UR ‐ PPO
Beginjaren maisteelt, oogsten met een 1 rijige maishakselaar In the first years of growing forage maize the crop was harvested with a one row maize chopper
The width of self‐propelled maize harvesters sharply increased: now up to 12‐14 rows

Snijmais
Toename drijfmestbemesting na opkomst of bij inzaaien Application of slurry during sowing or after emergence of the maize crop
Onkruid‐ en ziektebestrijding is zeer belangrijk bij de maisteelt Weed and disease control are highly important when growing maize
2
Forage maize
Toename opbrengsten snijmais (ton drogestof /jaar) door nieuwe rassen en betere teelt bij een lagere bemesting Increase of forage maize yields (ton DM/year) due to new varieties and improved cultivation with a lower fertilisation level
Minder mineralenuitspoeling door onderzaai met gras of door direct na de oogst inzaaien met groenbemester Leaching of minerals can be reduced by sowing of grass under the maize crop or by sowing a cover crop immediately after harvesting the maize Energie (VEM) per kg droge stof, net energy milk per kg DM Zetmeelgehalte (gram) per kg droge stof, starch content, per kg DM *1000 VEM = 6.9 MJ NEL (Mega Joules Netto Energie Lactatie) 921
