FOCUS ON BELGIAN FILM
Is there such a thing as a Belgian film? Actually, this ought to be a rhetorical question. But the fact that, at times, it does require an answer has much to do with the two languages, French and Dutch, and therefore the two cultural communities – there are, in fact, three, but explaining that would take too long – on which this beautiful country is built.
I jiné země si stále více začínají uvědomovat kvalitu a rozmanitost vlámské audiovizuální produkce. Díky dvěma Zlatým palmám a řadě dalších cen si valonští filmoví bratři Jean-Pierre a Luc Dardenneovi skutečně vydobyli celosvětovou proslulost. A úspěšně. Ukázalo se to například v roce , kdy byly v Cannes v rámci sekce Quinzaine des réalisateurs, bašty autorských filmů, uvedeny snímky Eldorado ( ) Bouliho Lannerse a Soukromé hodiny (Elève libre, ) Joachima Lafosse.

The fact that several Flemish films were advertised on the Croisette, in Cannes last year, with posters and captions like “l’autre cinéma belge” or “Belgian cinema made in Flanders,” has everything to do with the situation in which people abroad (and certainly in France) have long thought, and still do, that French is the only language spoken in Belgian films. This is clearly a misconception. We read in the Annual Report of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF [Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds], the body that governs Flemish film funding) that more than . million people went to see a Flemish film at the cinema last year. This represents a market share of close to percent. Some films, such as The Misfortunates (De helaasheid der dingen, – dir. Felix van Groeningen) or Dossier K ( – dir. Jan Verheyen), were outright hits, but smaller writer-director movies, such as My Queen Karo ( – dir. Dorothée van den Berghe) or Lost Persons Area ( – dir. Caroline Strubbe), also received a well-deserved opportunity on the silver screen. Other countries, too, are becoming increasingly aware of the quality and diversity of Flemish audiovisual productions. The same Annual Report devotes more than pages to a listing of all the selections, prizes and honourable mentions made at dozens of foreign film festivals. This is all good news. But, of course, things could always be better. It seems that, in Belgium itself, language can sometimes present a barrier – one that operates in both directions. There’s a nice anecdote here regarding the première at the Ostend Film Festival of the French-speaking film Rumba ( ) by the trio Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy (whose debut film Iceberg (L’Iceberg) is being shown here in Karlovy Vary). At the time, actor/scriptwriter/director Dominqiue Abel had this to say: “When we were given our own Star on the seafront at Ostend (the festival has its own ‘Walk of Fame’ equivalent – JT), literally no one from outside the organisation turned up. There we stood, with three glasses of champagne, inaugurating our Star on an empty seafront in the rain (laughs). A bit of a surreal picture. This was in stark contrast to the attention we received a er Cannes: countries bought Rumba and we courted attention from film magazines like Screen and Variety. In France too, the response to the premieres was much better than we had hoped. Now, this blindness to each other’s cinema also cuts the other way. We are familiar with Someone Else’s Happiness (Een ander zijn geluk) by Fien Troch – KVIFF , and Moscow, Belgium (Aanrijding in Moscou) by Christophe van Rompaey – KVIFF , because we attended a few film festivals with them. But most Flemish films never make it across the Belgian language boundary.” A fairly simplistic, but nonetheless effective test: ask people in another country to name, off the top of their heads, a Belgian film or filmmaker, and there is a good chance you will hear them say the Dardenne Brothers. With two Palme d’Or awards and a host of other prizes to their names, the Walloon film brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne do indeed enjoy worldwide fame. But it is a much lesser known fact that there are a great many other filmmakers pursuing careers in French-speaking Belgium. And with success. This was seen at Cannes in , for example, when the films Eldorado ( ) by Bouli Lanners and Private Lessons (Elève libre ( ) by Joachim Lafosse were selected for the Quinzaine des réalisateurs, the bastion of writer-director movies. At that time the Dardenne brothers also had a breakthrough with La promesse ( ), and Jaco van Dormael received the Caméra d’Or for his debut film Toto le héros ( ). Van Dormael (whose Mr. Nobody is also being shown in Karlovy Vary) is, for that matter, also a Belgian director, whose name might crop up in the aforementioned test. Not that long ago an article appeared in the British newspaper The Guardian on the Spanish Film Festival in London, under the title “The Curse of Almodóvar.” It complained that only four or five of the films

A nejlepší věc měla teprve přijít. Spoustě lidí ovšem nějaký čas trvá, než si to uvědomí. Jan Temmerman vedoucí filmové rubriky deníku De Morgen P. S. V některých zemích může panovat určitá nejistota, jakým jazykem to vlastně ve Vlámsku hovoříme. Je to holandština, nebo vlámština? Ve skutečnosti je to jeden jazyk. Ale zároveň není. Nejlépe to vysvětlíme na příkladu britské a americké angličtiny. Je to týž jazyk? Vlastně ano. Ale taky ne. Přízvuk se může silně lišit. Některá slova mají úplně jiný význam. Když například Američané použijí slovo „football“, mají na mysli svou domácí variantu ragby, zatímco v Anglii (i celé Evropě) všichni přesně vědí, ke kterému sportu tento výraz odkazuje. Tomu však Američané říkají „soccer“. Nicméně obecně lze předpokládat, že Američané a Britové si bez problémů rozumějí. Pochopitelně když chtějí.
produced in Spain each year (about or so) make it to British cinemas. And, at the same time, it was said of Almodóvar that he was “monopolising international attention.” The Spanish director responded furiously, sneering that he didn’t do “mass hypnosis” and then produced figures demonstrating that British cinemas have hardly any space le over for non-English-speaking films, not just from Spain, but from Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania and… Belgium. Since then, Almodovár’s films have become so well known that we now have the coin “Almodrama.” And the Dardenne Brothers’ work has become so well received that the expression “à la Dardenne” is cropping up in articles about… other films. But there can be no talk whatsoever of a “curse.” On the contrary. When foreign film distributors, sales agents or festivals discover new talent, they immediately go looking for any other cinematic gold they might be able to mine in that particular country. It is therefore a matter of fact that the Dardenne brothers’ success enhances the reputation of Belgian film. But that is not to say that Bouli Lanners and Joachim Lafosse, for example, owe their selection for the Quinzaine to that, or to that alone. Neither film could be easily described as “à la Dardenne.” What stood out about Eldorado by Bouli Lanners, for example, was that he wanted to make a deliberate departure from the grey, post-industrial image of Wallonia and so opted for sun-drenched landscapes. This bitter-sweet tragicomedy and road movie won three prizes on the Croisette: one from the young audience, one from the film press, and one from the cinema operators. If a film scores highly in these three areas they must be doing something right. And the best news was still to come: Eldorado became a modest hit with audiences in its own country (Flanders too) and in France. Popular success like this is a windfall for Walloon cinema, of which it is o en said that the filmmakers can regularly count on “un succès d’estime” at foreign festivals, but rarely attract full houses in their own country. Conclusion: is there such a thing as a Belgian film? Yes, of course there is! And the offering is plentiful, both in quantity and quality. And it is very diverse – in French and in Flemish/Dutch. It’s just that it can take quite a while for enough people to realise it. Jan Temmerman chief film critic at the daily newspaper De Morgen PS: There can be a certain amount of confusion in other countries about the language used in Flanders. Is it Dutch or is it Flemish? They are in fact one and the same. But then again, not. The best way to explain this is to point to British and American English. Is it the same language? In fact it is. But then again, not. Accents can differ greatly. And some words can have an entirely different meaning. For example: when Americans talk about “football” they mean their home-grown variant of rugby, whereas everyone in England (and the rest of Europe) knows exactly which sport “football” refers to. But Americans call that “soccer.” However, we can generally assume that Americans and Britons understand each other easily. When they want to, that is.

Crooner Marc is making ends meet by performing in retirement homes scattered across the country. On an overnight drive through the foggy Ardennes, his old delivery van breaks down and he has to find shelter at a remote inn. The oddball innkeeper, Bartel, clearly hasn’t had many guests in recent years, certainly not since his wife le him in the lurch. The next day it turns out the van won’t be that easy to fix and the telephone doesn’t seem to be working either. Obviously, Marc won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. The torment suggested in the title can now commence…. The result is a dark, surprising and violent horror film, which refers, in a comic yet gruesome way, to illustrious predecessors such as Deliverance, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Misery. The main character’s macabre struggle for survival leaves the viewer completely shocked and disconcerted a er witnessing this bizarre and absurd “love story.”

PSANCI OSUDU
THE MISFORTUNATES
The Misfortunates, based on the bestselling novel by Dimitri Verhulst, tells the story of young Gunther Strobbe whose extremely turbulent youth is spent in the village of Reetverdegem in the company of his alcohol-saturated father and uncles. Years later, the adult Gunther, who now writes for a living, looks back over this early period. Not with nostalgia, but with something more akin to bitterness and sadness, since young Gunther gradually comes to the realisation that he doesn’t want simply to follow in the footsteps of the older and, frankly, lost generation. But this choice will be a painful one and, without the affections of the tribe, the big, wide world can be lonely and cold. Benefitting from naturalistic performances and from an energetic narrative style driven by dynamic camera work, director Felix van Groeningen succeeds remarkably well in capturing that paradoxical balance between wanton euphoria and quiet despair, vulgarity and tenderness.

PRIVATE LESSONS
This excellent psychological and moral drama tells the story of teenager Jonas (played by Jonas Bloquet) who is not bad at tennis, but isn’t doing very well in school. Nor can he expect much help from his divorced parents. At the tennis club Jonas gets to know a few friendly -year-olds, one of whom suggests giving Jonas a hand revising for his re-sits during the summer holidays. But the lessons Jonas receives are not confined to his school studies alone. His older pals also advise him on his early romantic and sexual encounters with his young girlfriend Delphine (Pauline Etienne). And advice is not all he gets. The result is a carefully constructed and well-performed coming-of-age story which gradually steps up the pace, and which closely examines the freedom suggested in the title and opens it up to discussion. “A nos limites” would thus be an appropriate motto for the film.

Fiona šéfuje fast foodu a jednou večer se nešťastnou náhodou zamkne v mrazírně. Tu a tam nám „supercool“ humor, klidná kamera a tragikomická poezie připomenou zdrženlivý filmařský styl finského režiséra Akiho Kaurismäkiho.
Fiona manages a fast food restaurant where, one evening, she accidentally locks herself in the cold store. A er a long, cold night she comes to realise two things. One: her husband and two young children didn’t notice her disappearance, not even at breakfast. Two: she feels an irresistible attraction to everything chilly and cold, all things icy and snowy. She sneaks into a refrigerated lorry as part of a quest to reach the distant North and find the iceberg of the film’s title – and perhaps new love? This debut film clearly demonstrates the directing trio’s self-confessed marvel for the burlesque, particularly the slapstick or clowning antics of such masters as Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati. Here and there, the ‘supercooled’ humour, serene camera work and tragicomic poetry call to mind the restrained cinematic style of Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki.

, Belgie) a Fiona Gordonová ( , Kanada) si díky své malé divadelní společnosti, příznačně nazvané Courage Mon Amour, získali mezinárodní renomé. Jsou pověstní svými bizarně komickými vystoupeními v cirkusovém duchu (La danse des poules či Histoire sans gravité). Natočili rovněž několik krátkých filmů plných vizuálního humoru (Merci Cupidon, Rosita a Walking on the Wild Side). , Belgium) and Fiona Gordon (b. , Canada) have managed, through their little theatre company poignantly named Courage Mon Amour, to build an international reputation for quirky/funny, circus-like stage productions, such as La danse des poules and Histoire sans gravité. They have also made a few short films, full of visual humour, such as Merci Cupidon, Rosita and Walking on the Wild Side. For their feature debut Iceberg the duo became a trio since, alongside Abel and Gordon, the film was also written, acted and directed by Bruno Romy (b. , France). In their collaboration resulted in another colourful and burlesque film for cinema, Rumba. Dominique Abel: “We come from theatre, so we are used to appealing to the audience’s imagination. If we want a tree on stage we have to mimic the branches with our arms: this outlook we brought with us to the silver screen.”

LOST PERSONS AREA
ÚZEMÍ ZTRACENÝCH LIDÍ
LOST PERSONS AREA
The story, located for the most part in an industrial no-man’s land, between tall electricity pylons on which the leading male characters are working, is not easy to sum up. This reflective, highly personal debut by writer-director Caroline Strubbe doesn’t rely on a strict narrative line. It offers reflections of solitude, feelings of disquiet and longings, all observed through a searching, roving camera. The film is an intimate and mysterious chronicle of relationships in general and family relations in particular. The young daughter Tessa is more or less le to her own devices, but manages to fill her days with rangy rambles and a strange passion for collecting things. For her part, her mother Bettina appears to dream of another life: a more normal one or, perhaps, on the contrary, a more adventurous one. Lost Persons Area is a subtle drama about restless people’s search for happiness.

MAN ZOEKT VROUW
MUŽ HLEDÁ ŽENU
A PERFECT MATCH
In this dour but romantic tragicomedy, headmaster and widower Leopold (the excellent Jan Decleir) decides that it’s time for a new wife. He has now retired and his trusty housekeeper has decided to return to Romania where she was born. His ever-solicitous, UFO-obsessed neighbour Julien (an on-form Wim Opbrouck) persuades Leopold to look for a wife through a dating site. But, in the meantime, the Romanian housekeeper has arranged her own successor: her young niece Alina (Romanian actress Maria Popistasu in the starring role). The young woman does her level best but, where housekeeping is concerned, she turns out to be a disaster. With an excellent cast and a well-written script, director Miel van Hoogenbemt manages to give this familiar-feeling dramedy the right tone, somewhere between realism and poetry.

The Flemish screenwriter, director and producer made his feature debut in at the age of with the social drama Miss Montigny, which he shot in Wallonia in French. His Flemish film debut followed in with A Perfect Match. Van Hoogenbemt: “I don’t make that much of a distinction between film genres. The first step in feature film is quasi-documentary in any case. If you want to make a film about a man looking for a wife via the Internet, you have to do your research anyway, so you know what’s possible, what’s acceptable and what you want to achieve. Make honest films and you know you are making the best films you can. Commercial ambitions aside, for me, film is still the seventh art.”

MR. NOBODY

PAN NIKDO
MR. NOBODY
The premise of this film, which is as extravagant as it is ambitious, is actually quite simple. A married couple decide to get divorced and this means that their son, the young Nemo Nobody, has a heart-rending choice to make: to stay with his father or to move to the other side of the world with his mother. As long as he doesn’t make up his mind anything is possible. The film presents a number of potential consequences – side-by-side or interlinked. For example, what if Nemo were to marry that little girl in the red dress? His life would turn out differently than if he chose the girl in yellow. And what about the little girl dressed in blue? Thus, the story is told at a variety of locations and takes place in the past, the present and the distant future, but not necessarily in chronological order. It sounds more complicated than it really is since, as writer-director Jaco van Dormael puts it: “Each character appears in someone else’s dreams and, in turn, dreams of another life.”

MY QUEEN KARO

MÁ PRINCEZNA KARO
MY QUEEN KARO
Píše se rok a její otec Raven (Matthias Schoenaerts) a matka Dalia (Déborah Françoisová z filmu Dítě bratří Dardenneových) odjíždějí z Belgie do jakéhosi squatu v Amsterdamu, bývalém ráji hippies. Věděla to tehdy a ví to i nyní. S Karo to určitě dopadlo dobře.
Set in an Amsterdam commune, this partly autobiographical revisit to the early ’ s is told through the eyes of the ten-year-old main character who is desperately trying to fathom what all the adults around her are up to. It’s an exciting, yet very confusing situation in which the young Karo (Anna Franziska Jäger) finds herself when she and her father Raven (Matthias Schoenaerts) and mother Dalia (Déborah François, from the Dardenne film The Child) leave Belgium for a squat in the former hippy paradise of Amsterdam. By now Karo is quite used to the antics of her artistic and impassioned parents but things go a little too fast for her in the commune. Her main problem is not knowing how to stay loyal to her revolutionary father and, at the same time, her more pragmatic mother. But children are flexible, as filmmaker Dorothée van den Berghe is aware. Then and now. We can only guess at what might have happened to Raven and Dalia next but, for Karo, things certainly turn out well.
