EXKLUZÍV AJÁNDÉKANYAGOD KÖZÉPFOKON Halloween The word comes from 'All Hallows' Eve' and Halloween is celebrated on 31 October, the night before Christians honour the dead. Originally, this feast combined a few pagan harvest festivals, so it's quite possible that pumpkins and apples are symbols referring to this agricultural period. We decorate the interiors and the front doors of our flats and houses with them, since there are plenty of them in the gardens and they are also widely available on the market. It's quite common to make Jack-o'lanterns and put them in your window to light the streets, hoping to keep the evil spirits away. Traditionally, we wear masks and costumes depicting skeletons, witches, monsters and other scary creatures. Black and orange colours dominate this festivity, symbolizing purification and peace of souls before moving on to the next world. This is considered to be an influence of Protestantism. Costumes have a disguising function, but they also serve as a source of fun, entertainment and sometimes fear. Another kind of fun can be found in a game called ' Trick or treat?', when the little children go around their neighbourhood singing and asking for sweets as a reward. Some young single ladies believe that if they gaze into a mirror in a dark room, the mirror will reveal the face of their future husband in it. These days we go to Halloween parties and frighten each other with ghost stories and horror films. Halloween is becoming more popular all over the world, including Hungary.

EXKLUZÍV AJÁNDÉKANYAGOD FELSŐFOKON Halloween ”Upon that night, when fairies light” - as Robert Burns writes in his poem' Halloween', numerous spooky and delightful events take place on 31 October, a date widely known as the night preceding the eve of All Hallows, when Christians commemorate and honour the dead. Initially, this feast served as a pagan harvest festival, which the use of apples, corn, turnip and pumpkins as decorations still clearly reflects. Besides the pagan influence, that of Protestants can also be traced. Most of us carve 'Jack-o'-lanterns from pumpkins not even thinking about its symbolic meaning, that is, lighting the road for souls passing on to the next world. Protestants considered it essential to avoid vengeance. On the other hand, however, candles and lights are thought to keep evil spirits away. Halloween also involves a lot of fun. It is most common, of course, to wear scary masks and costumes of skeletons, witches, monsters or any other dreadful creatures. Following these traditions, we can disguise our identity and furthermore, frighten the wits out of our family and acquaintances. It is extremely funny to see your friends' sticky faces after eating candy apples, which is also a widely practised tradition in North America. Some visitors are really enthusiastic about visiting haunted places. In California, for instance, tourists would very much like to see funny tombstones in private yards. Will you be among those heading for these places? 'Trick or Treat?' has been a tradition for quite a while, and it is a frequently played children’s game in English speaking countries. Children wander through their neighbouring districts singing and expecting some sweets in return. Some young single ladies desire nothing more than to see the complexion of their future spouse in the mirror at night. Halloween is taking a toehold in several countries of the world.
