Of course I knew from the start that I would be here to graduate and leave. And yes, I really look forward to my next challenge. But it is also hard for me to leave this safe environment, my baby named Bnieuws, and my great colleagues. This edition is themed ‘Hello Goodbye’, because that is how a faculty rolls: students, teachers, employees, and visitors come and go. Some of them only stay for a short time, others will leave after many years. Take Dirk Sijmons, who spoke so openly of his love for education and his devotion to his students. Or Vaidotas Vaiciulis, who was only in Delft for two short years. His journey has lead him to New York, where he is working on ambitious projects for REX.

Maybe this new Bnieuws will be just another edition for you. For me it is special. Extra special, because this will be my last publication as an editor. When I became part of the editorial team two years ago, I would have never imagined staying this long. I have spent mornings, afternoons, and evenings in the Bnieuws office. Sometimes it was the best job in the world, other times it was really difficult to combine with my studies. With eleven hours a week (or more!) Bnieuws became a big part of my life. There was one thing that always kept me going: meeting interesting people from all over the faculty every month. It was not just work to me, it was inspirational, educational and most definitely a privilege. This faculty has become my second home.

Over de grens / Levensecht De adembenemende maquettes en utopische voorstellingen van moderne naoorlogse steden droegen 50 jaar geleden de belofte van een nieuwe toekomst met zich mee. Chandigarh, Casablanca en Brasilia veroverden een plaats in het collectieve geheugen als krachtige en ongenaakbare symbolen van het nieuwe, moderne leven. Vijf decennia later ontstaat een heel ander beeld. Bewoners, architecten en ontwikkelaars veranderden het uitzicht van deze steden op uiteenlopende manieren. Toch bleven een aantal kwaliteiten en waarden onweerlegbaar overeind. Met een enthousiast betoog over het landschap verliet (inmiddels) emeritusprofessor Dirk Sijmons de faculteit. In zijn afscheidsrede gaf hij de toeschouwer niet slechts een samenvatting van zijn oeuvre; Sijmons deelde zijn inzichten in de verbinding tussen processen en ontwerp, big data en wijsheid, wetenschap en liefde voor landschap. Een verbinding die door Sijmons werd omschreven als een vorm van analytisch sjamanisme: een typische manier van kijken. Na een periode als hoogleraar Duurzame Stedenbouw werd Sijmons het gezicht van de leerstoel Landschapsarchitectuur en de mastertrack Landscape Architecture. Bnieuws sprak met Dirk Sijmons over zijn vertrek en meer.

U bent een druk man met uw eigen bureau, uw aanstelling als hoogleraar en andere activiteiten. Gaat u na een mooie carrière van uw pensioen genieten of gaat nu nog even door met de drukte? Ik ben voor de TU de uiterste houdbaarheidsdatum gepasseerd, daar ik bijna 67 ben. Mijn aanstelling ging voorbij mijn pensioengerechtigde leeftijd omdat bij de ‘club van landschap’ vrijwel iedereen aan het promoveren is. Ik wilde graag van de meeste promovendi hun verdediging meemaken. Dat is niet gelukt. Alleen Saskia de Wit is nu gepromoveerd. Steffen (Nijhuis, red.) is binnenkort aan de beurt en René van de Velde ergens komend jaar. Ik hoop wel dat mijn opvolger met een schone lei kan beginnen. Het is behoorlijk belastend als mensen aan het promoveren zijn en les moeten geven. Je kan je voorstellen dat dat soms een lastige combinatie is. Bij H+N+S heb ik op mijn 64ste al afscheid genomen als directeur, maar ik ben nog wel aandeelhouder en adviseur. Als adviseur ga ik nog allerlei projecten draaien. Ik zit ‘als adviseur’ onder andere in het team dat de Eo Wijers-prijs, die ik voor de tweede keer in mijn carrière mede mocht ontvangen, gewonnen heeft.

Is er nog geen opvolger van u bekend? Nee, de advertentie staat nog niet in de kranten. Als u nu de advertentie zou moeten schrijven, welke eisen zou u dan stellen? Ik kan wel iets zeggen over wat er nu nodig is, maar je kan nooit over je eigen termijn heen regeren. Welke eisen dat moeten zijn, moeten ze zelf uitmaken. We hebben een nieuwe mastertrack waar veel energie in gaat zitten. Tegelijkertijd moeten goede samenwerkingen met de rest van Urbanism geconstrueerd en geconsolideerd worden. Landschapsarchitectuur is al vanaf 1947 aan deze faculteit verbonden, maar als ondersteunend vak voor mensen die stedenbouw studeerden. Heel belangrijk, denk ik. Nog steeds ligt er ook de taak de stedenbouwers te overtuigen dat de dialoog met het onderliggende landschap van vitaal belang is en eigenlijk ook het geheim van een Dutch approach: het over je disciplinaire grenzen heen stappen. Ik ben er echt van overtuigd dat de stedenbouw geen toekomst heeft zonder goede koppeling met de life sciences. Dat kan via landschapsarchitectuur. Belangrijk voor mijn opvolger is dus het besef dat de

belangrijkste opgaven liggen in stedelijke landschappen, in de tapijtmetropolen van de wereld. Uw noemde net al de mastertrack Landscape Architecture die tijdens uw professorschap verder gevormd is. Hou zou u de identiteit van de mastertrack omschrijven? De uniciteit is dat we in het eerste masterjaar een architectonisch/landschapsarchitectonisch gevormd programma hebben neergezet, waar de studenten als het ware met mes en vork leren eten. Thema’s zijn bijvoorbeeld ‘Huis en verankering’ en het ‘Urbane theater’, ons baserend op de enorme hoeveelheid onderzoek die er op het gebied van de landschapsarchitectuur op de faculteit gedaan is. In het laatste jaar, ‘Flowscapes’, brengen we actuele opgaven en het werken met processen aan de orde, om te laten zien dat het landschap in wezen een levend organisme is. Het eerste jaar is te omschrijven als de statica en het tweede jaar als de dynamica van de landschaparchitectuur. Die combinatie is denk ik uniek, maar moet zich nog wel bewijzen in de komende jaren. We zijn nu drie jaar bezig en de eerste afgestudeerden hebben allemaal werk, iets waar ik enorm trots op ben. Maar dit zijn zaken van lange adem! Over die afgestudeerden: wat is het wezenlijke verschil tussen een afgestudeerde stedenbouwer of landschapsarchitect. Vervagen de verschillen tussen beide rollen? Ik denk wel dat er een wezenlijk verschil is. Verschil één is dat ‘tuin- en landschapsarchitecten’ dwars door de schalen heen en met levend materiaal werken. Al werken stedenbouwers in zekere zin ook met levende processen; in de vorm van sociale processen etc. De landschapsarchitect werkt echter meer vanuit natuurlijke en ecologische processen. En ik denk dat de landschapsarchitectuur, dat is een historische gegroeid gegeven, wat meer ontwerpgericht is. De stedenbouw heeft natuurlijk ook nog de planning kant erin zitten en is ook voor een deel beleidsgericht. Bij landschapsarchitectuur

speelt de ontwerpgerichtheid eigenlijk door het hele tweejarig curriculum een hoofdrol. Ontwerpen aan zowel de statische en de dynamisch kant van het landschap. Als u terugkijkt op uw periode als hoogleraar, welke gebeurtenis springt dan naar voren? Wat mij meteen te binnen schiet is het moment dat we in het Staatsblad stonden en de accreditatie van de mastertrack dus eindelijk rond was. Wytze Patijn is de mastertrack begonnen zonder de accreditatie te regelen. Achteraf zou kun je zeggen dat dat een verstandige keuze is geweest, omdat de track er nu anders nog niet was geweest. Vanaf het moment dat ik hier begon was dat hét dossier dat naar de eindstreep gebracht moest worden. Ik ben blij dat het tijdens mijn aanstelling hier afgerond is. Ik ben voordat ik bij H+N+S begon, lange tijd ambtenaar geweest bij het ministerie van Landbouw en Staatsbosbeheer. Iedereen die in dit gebouw afstudeert, krijgt een stempeltje waar het Ministerie van OCW verantwoordelijk voor is. Voor landschapsarchitectuur geldt dat niet. Voor het landbouwonderwijs is het Ministerie van Economische zaken en Landbouw eindverantwoordelijke. Mijn ervaring en contacten uit mijn tijd als ambtenaar kwamen in deze wonderlijke situatie van pas. Welke veranderingen heeft u zien plaatsvinden tijdens uw aanstelling? Enorm veranderd is het gebouw. Eén dag nadat ik het contract, destijds als opvolger van Kees Duijvestein als hoogleraar Duurzame Stedenbouw met toenmalig decaan Wytze Patijn tekende, fikte het gebouw af. Ik was emotioneel over het afbranden, maar ik werk hier naar tevredenheid. Dat oude gebouw had ook zo zijn voordelen, maar er zat een grote verdwijnmachine in: de lift. In de brede gangen van ons huidige onderkomen vinden steeds interessante ontmoetingen plaats. Een andere verandering was een financiële impuls van het CvB waardoor we twee mensen hebben

kunnen aantrekken: Nico Tillie en Frits van Loon. De eerste is aangetrokken als onderzoeker, maar hij springt ook bij in het onderwijs. Hij is de enige ecoloog in het gezelschap; een waardevolle toevoeging. Met Frits ben ik ook blij, hij is wat je noemt een ‘onderwijsbeest’. Hij geniet van zijn studenten en zet zich honderd procent in. Daar krijgt hij ook veel voor terug. Hij is gekozen tot docent van het jaar! Ik weet niet hoe dat geteld wordt, maar het is een wonder op zich. Wij zijn zo’n kleine afdeling, ik moet het hem toch nog eens vragen [lacht]. Daarnaast hebben we een onderzoeksprogramma geschreven, veel te breed, maar wel iets wat de moeite waard is. Je kunt je voorstellen dat iedereen zo druk bezig is met zijn promotie en lesgeven dat niemand kijkt naar wat er gebeurt na die promotie. Wat kunnen we met deze kennis doen en hoe

kunnen we daarmee onderzoeksopdrachten binnenhalen voor de faculteit? Het programma heeft ons gedwongen voorbij dat eeuwige eindpunt van die promoties te kijken. Voor de opvolger ligt iets klaar om op in te haken. Welke les neemt u mee van uw tijd hier? Door het omgaan met studenten kreeg ik een wonderbaarlijke toegang tot een andere wereld en een andere generatie. Ik heb gepoogd daar naar te luisteren: wat leeft bij jongeren, wat kan ik daarmee in mijn eigen praktijk én in mijn manier van onderwijs geven? Ook kreeg ik de kans werelden te verbinden, die elkaar anders niet ontmoetten. Zo heb ik samen met deze faculteit, de faculteit Industrieel Ontwerpen en Wageningen University, onderzoek gedaan naar opties en keuzes voor post-fossiele landschappen. Het boek is uiteindelijk

door mij en mijn bureau geschreven, maar ook afstudeerders hebben daar werk voor gedaan. Helaas noemt het Energieakkoord geen enkele keer het woord ruimte. Ik denk dat juist de ruimte, of met andere woorden het landschap, het toernooiveld is waar deze strijd om de energie-transitie wordt gewonnen of verloren. Helaas ziet de energiewereld dat niet en zijn de ontwerpers zich nog niet op deze nieuwe opgave hebben gericht. Architecten zijn volgens mij gefrustreerd dat de nieuwste generatie windmolens uitsteekt boven de hoogste gebouwen die ze in Nederland ooit hebben kunnen neerzetten [lacht].

Over die ruimte: is er voldoende aandacht vanuit het Rijk en ziet u de toekomst vrolijk in? Ik maak me wat dat betreft best zorgen. Het woord landschap is langzamerhand uit het woordenboek van de Rijksoverheid verdwenen. Alles wat door de Rijksoverheid gedaan werd is gedecentraliseerd naar de provincies. Op rijksniveau denkt men alleen: ‘Tja landschap, ach ja, wat doet het voor de economie… niets toch?’ Ik ben heel blij dat de Raad voor de Leefomgeving een advies aan het schrijven is over wat het Rijk met het landschap zou moeten doen. Een minimaal waakvlammetje, maar het is van vitaal belang voor de toekomst van het landschap dat het blijft branden.

Ik heb ooit een Vedute manuscript gemaakt [zie vedute.nl, red.]. Er zijn meer dan 200 manuscripten van 44*32*7 cm, waarin architecten, filosofen, historici, you name it, hun visie op ruimte geven. Die van mij is ‘de landschapsmaker’. Als je het manuscript uitpakt blijkt het een soort sjamanistische instrument met sporen van het hoogveenmos en de zaden van de moerasandijvie, de twee planten die ons land eigenlijk gemaakt hebben. Het geeft de sjamaan, ofwel landschapsarchitect, de kans het Nederlandse landschap opnieuw vorm te geven, mocht het er in het geval van nood niet meer zijn. De sjamaan slaat daarmee een brug tussen natuurlijke processen en cultuur.

Hoe ziet u de rol van toekomstige landschapsarchitecten en -studenten, zijn zij de toekomstige wakers van ons landschap? Je bevindt je als landschapsarchitect in een ambigue situatie. Als er al een maatschappelijk debat is over het landschap, dan komt het er vaak op neer dat mensen tegen iedere vorm van verandering zijn. Jij bent echter meester van een vak, waarin je hebt geleerd dat het landschap al vijf à zes keer volledig op de schop gegaan is in de geschiedenis. Het vak is juist de veranderingen die zullen optreden een betekenisvolle vorm te geven. Je staat tussen twee vuren. Je bent in die zin dus niet de bewaker van het landschap, maar de bewaker van de liefde voor het

Als landschapsarchitect werk je door de schalen heen en kom je diepe filosofische kwesties tegen. Volgens mij is een mensenleven niet lang genoeg om alles er van te doorgronden. Mijn pad tot nu laat zich omschrijven als de onvoorspelbare route van een bal die door de flipperkast wordt geschoten. Ik ben een Delftse stedenbouwer die volgens onnaspeurlijke weg in de landschapsarchitectuur terecht gekomen is. Ik heb een link met de faculteit en weet waar de stedenbouw en de architectuur in wortelen, maar je weet ook wat landschap is. Ik hoop dat ik iets daarvan samen met mijn collega’s heb kunnen meegeven aan de studenten en in het onderzoek.

Hoe verhoudt het ‘sjamanisme’, dat u noemde bij uw afscheidsrede, zich daarmee? Dat gaat precies over dit punt. Ik noem het bij wijze van grap een vorm van ‘analytisch sjamanisme’. Hoe je maatschappelijk processen en overheidsbemoeienissen omtrent de ruimte met een toverstafje kunt aanraken en zo ervoor kunt zorgen dat ze een mooie bijdrage aan het landschap leveren. Ik treed daar zelf in op als sjamaan. Het is even slikken voor de universiteit, die andere eisen aan de wetenschap stelt dan het sjamanisme kan bieden [lacht].

Iedere dag worden er op deze faculteit honderden producten gemaakt: teksten, tekeningen, maquettes… Het liefst maken we ze zo goed en zo mooi mogelijk. Onze naam staat er ten slotte op. Maar is dat terecht? Is je ontwerp van jou? Door wie ben jij geïnspireerd of heb je misschien per ongeluk zelfs iets gekopieerd? En mocht dat zo zijn, hoe moet je daar dan mee omgaan? Bnieuws ging langs bij een aantal experts om deze vragen beantwoord te krijgen.

Studentenwerkstukken die worden ingeleverd via Turnitin op Blackboard worden automatisch gecontroleerd op plagiaat en worden aan de database toegevoegd. Maar hoe zit dat met tekeningen en ontwerpen? Die kunnen niet zo eenvoudig worden gecontroleerd. Ook worden er vaak genoeg posters gepresenteerd met referentiebeelden, waarbij zelden de naam van de fotograaf of architect worden genoemd. Gelukkig kan Just de Leeuwe (Publishing Advisor bij Research Support TU Delft en auteur copyright.tudelft.nl) daar uitleg over geven. Auteursrecht “Het auteursrecht is een moreel recht: de maker van een werk is altijd de maker. Het eigendom kan echter contractueel anders zijn vastgelegd, bijvoorbeeld als je in opdracht van een bedrijf een onderzoek hebt gedaan. Dan ben jij de auteur, maar heeft het bedrijf de rechten op het gebruik van het onderzoek,” legt Just uit. “Als je iets hebt gemaakt wat oorspronkelijk en onderscheidend is, ontstaat automatisch het auteursrecht of copyright. © hoef je er

dus niet eens bij te zetten. Je kan er wel voor kiezen om een creative commons licentie te geven. Dan kunnen anderen jouw werk vrijelijk delen en hergebruiken, mits zij jouw naam erbij vermelden en aan eventuele andere voorwaarden voldoen. Je kan bijvoorbeeld aangeven dat jouw werk niet mag worden aangepast en niet mag worden gebruikt voor commerciële doeleinden.” Voor teksten is dat vrij eenvoudig toe te passen, maar hoe zit dat met beeldmateriaal? Just vertelt: “Ook op beeldmateriaal is auteursrecht van toepassing. Als jij een referentiebeeld gebruikt, zal je daar de naam van de fotograaf bij moeten vermelden. Als je niet weet wie dat is, kan je ook zeggen ‘auteur onbekend’. Het gaat er om dat je duidelijk aangeeft welke elementen zijn hergebruikt. Als je een foto wil gebruiken, maar van de fotograaf geen toestemming krijgt, zou je de foto kunnen natekenen en erbij kunnen zetten ‘gebaseerd op …’. Dan heb je een oorspronkelijke en onderscheidende toepassing gemaakt én erkenning gegeven aan de fotograaf.” Als je andermans tekening gebruikt, moet je dat vermelden. Maar wat gebeurt er op

het moment dat je samen met andere studenten aan een project werkt? Just: “Als je met tien mensen een tekening maakt, ontstaat een gedeeld auteursrecht over die tekening. Dat is niet echt handig [lacht]. Als je er iets aan wil veranderen, moet je daarvoor namelijk toestemming vragen aan iedereen. Maar je kan natuurlijk wel, net als bij foto’s, de tekening aanpassen, een eigen interpretatie maken en daarmee een nieuw werk maken, en de oorspronkelijke tekenaars erbij vermelden.” Het is dus aardig wat werk om er voor te zorgen dat aan iedereen recht wordt gedaan. Waarom al die moeite? “Stel je voor dat jouw poster zomaar wordt gekopieerd door een ander, dat zou je toch niet leuk vinden?” vraagt Just. “Iedere student dient een academische houding te ontwikkelen waarbij je consequent en bewust met je bronnen omgaat. Kies niet de weg van de minste weerstand, maar creëer transparantie in je werk. Laat

Je hebt twee types intellectueel eigendom: automatisch ontstaande eigendomsrechten en industrieel eigendom. Het auteursrecht valt onder het eerstgenoemde en wordt verkregen door de maker zodra het originele werk is gemaakt. Dit geeft de maker het recht om het werk te publiceren en te vermenigvuldigen, ongeacht de locatie waar het werk is gemaakt. Het recht op publicatie en vermenigvuldiging is overdraagbaar. Ook zijn er uitzonderingen. Als je werk gemaakt is in dienst van een ander, dan is het auteursrecht van de werkgever. Denk aan bijvoorbeeld lesmateriaal. In alle gevallen is het echter zo, ook als het auteursrecht is overgedragen, dat het werk niet mag worden gepubliceerd zonder de naam van oorspronkelijke maker. Het werk mag niet worden verminkt en de maker kan soms financiële genoegdoening krijgen. Bij overdracht van het auteursrecht kan bijvoorbeeld een

anderen weten hoe je aan je werk bent gekomen. Dat is niet alleen belangrijk voor diegenen die je citeert, maar ook voor je publiek. Zo kunnen je collega’s bijvoorbeeld ook worden geïnspireerd door de foto die jij hebt gevonden. Een elegante oplossing voor het geven van de juiste credits is het toevoegen van een dankwoord. Daarin kan je ook de niet-tastbare bijdragen van anderen benoemen.” Dat is al een stuk helderder. Toch rijst een aantal vervolgvragen: gelden voor studenten dezelfde regels als voor medewerkers van bedrijven? En als wij tekeningen en ontwerpen maken, vallen die dan onder auteursrecht? Lieuwe Boersma is jurist bij de afdeling Legal Affairs van de TU Delft en is gespecialiseerd in intellectueel recht, waartoe ook auteursrecht behoort. Intellectueel eigendom “Je moet beseffen dat auteursrecht onderdeel is van een groter onderwerp: het intellectueel eigendom.

Het auteursrecht, en dus ook de daarbij komende beperkingen, vervalt zeventig jaar na het overlijden van de auteur. Tot het industrieel eigendom behoren modelrecht, merkenrecht en octrooien. Voor dit type eigendom geldt dat het werk moet worden geregistreerd. Daardoor is het industrieel eigendom afhankelijk van het land van registratie, overdraagbaar, verhandelbaar en eindig. Om de zoveel jaar moet je het werk opnieuw registeren.” Op Bouwkunde worden tekeningen gemaakt, foto’s, ontwerpen, maquettes, etc. Waar vallen deze producten dan onder? Als een student een concept bedenkt, is dat dat een ‘model’? Of kan je hier een octrooi op aanvragen? Lieuwe legt uit: “Merken zijn woordmerken of beeldmerken, hieronder vallen

bijvoorbeeld logo’s van bedrijven. Een model is dat wat je ziet: een product met een bepaald uiterlijk. Bij serieproducten is het eigendom van het bedrijf waarbij de ontwerp in dienst is, bij unieke producten van de ontwerper. Octrooirecht is nog specifieker. Je vraagt een octrooi aan vanwege een technisch aspect, niet voor een product op zich. Dit moet ook nog eens nieuw zijn, inventief zijn, en voldoen aan strikte regels. Beeldmateriaal, ontwerpen en concepten vallen hier dus niet onder, maar onder het automatisch verkregen auteursrecht.”

In alle drie de gevallen mag je het product niet gebruiken zonder toestemming van de eigenaar. Vaak zal je zelfs een vergoeding moeten betalen. Maar hoe zit dat dan met producten waar ‘alleen’ auteursrecht op rust? Mag je een foto bijvoorbeeld altijd gebruiken als je de fotograaf erbij vermeldt? “Een citaat moet altijd een functie hebben, dat geldt ook voor foto’s,” vertelt Lieuwe. “In beide gevallen moet je de auteur erbij vermelden. Als je een boek schrijft en publiceert is het verstandig om vooraf ook nog toestemming te vragen aan de fotograaf, zodat je problemen voorkomt bij het gebruik van foto’s, tekeningen, grafieken en grote stukken tekst.” Een belangrijke laatste vraag voor Lieuwe heeft betrekking op studenten. Worden zij door de TU Delft gezien als medewerkers? Is je project van jou? En als je een afstudeerstage doet bij een bedrijf, mag je dan je project in je portfolio opnemen? Of is je project eigendom van dat bedrijf? Lieuwe: “Tussen universiteiten en bedrijven bestaat een groot verschil. Universiteiten willen transparant zijn, hun kennis delen met de maatschappij. Bedrijven willen graag winst maken met hun producten, ervoor zorgen dat de concurrenten niet zonder meer bij hun nieuwe ideeën kunnen. Daarom is het altijd verstandig om vooraf goede afspraken te maken over afstudeerprojecten. De afdeling Legal Affairs kan studenten helpen om ervoor te zorgen dat de resultaten van hun project niet alleen bij het bedrijf terecht komen, maar ook voor wetenschappelijke en

academische doeleinden kunnen worden gebruikt.” En als je niet bij een bedrijf afstudeert, maar ‘gewoon’ op de TU Delft? “Dan is je project van jou, maar de TU Delft kan er een claim op leggen. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld gebeuren als het onderzoek in samenwerking met een bedrijf wordt uitgevoerd en de TU Delft contractuele verplichtingen moet kunnen nakomen. Als het product een uitvinding is en interessant blijkt te zijn, dan vraagt de TU Delft octrooi aan. Als dat inkomsten genereert voor de TU Delft, dan krijg je daar als student ook een beloning voor [gelijk zoals voor medewerkers, red.]. Om miscommunicatie te voorkomen is het verstandig om hier vooraf goede afspraken over te maken. In eerste instantie kan dit met je afstudeerbegeleider, eventueel kan je altijd hulp inschakelen van de afdeling Legal Affairs.” Link met de praktijk Carien van Boxtel is jarenlang advocaat geweest en ontwerpt nu tuinen. Ook zij onderschrijft het belang van het vooraf afspraken maken: “Over auteursrecht worden vaak geen goede afspraken gemaakt met de opdrachtgever, terwijl je juist met dit wapen in de hand betere voorwaarden kunt bedingen. Dat kan gaan over wijzigingen in het ontwerp bij de realisatie, over het vermelden van je naam als architect bij het object en in publicaties, maar ook over (eenzijdige!) aanpassingen of verbouwingen. Maak daarom studie van de standaardvoorwaarden van de BNA, BNO of de Nieuwe Regeling en vraag je af of deze op jouw ontwerppraktijk van toepassing zijn. Kijk ook zelf hoe rechters in Nederland met plagiaat, sloop en verbouwingen omgaan op rechtspraak.nl. looking forward to some days’ theme, others I was expecting to skip. But things started well. An insightful first day had us investigate and debate on dualities such as urban and nature, or landscape architect, urbanist, architect and other involved professions. We were given the opportunity to develop our own opinions and tools to deal with these notions. The second

This year the well-known ‘Urbanism Week’ changed its name to ‘Urban & Landscape Week’, in order to embrace the students of Landscape Architecture. The week took place from 12 till 16 October. The overall theme ‘Draw the Line’ refers to more than a line drawn on sketching paper. At what point do we as designers actually draw a line in a broad sense? Bnieuws spoke to Jan Maarten van Hemert, one of the organisers of the week, to find out how this theme shaped the ‘new’ Urban & Landscape Week.

day was about the act of drawing and gave us insights into communication and investigation through drawing, an aspect too often left aside from our academic schedules. I could free my hand, learn new drawing skills, learn about the place from the drawings I did and altogether, gain some confidence about my drawing capacity. The third day had us face some notions of ethics, with a workshop subject that appeared tough to approach: how to deal with ethical matters such as segregation in spatial design. But the session had me impressed and left with motivation to work on this subject. The last day, about bottom-up and top-down approaches, had us

The name change to Urban & Landscape Week was not a big as over the past few years Polis, the master association of Urbanism, has graduadly included Landscape Architecture students in their activities. Jan Maarten explains: “If we would have maintained the previous name, we would have secluded a group of students before the week even started.” Furthermore, this new name was of inspiration to the theme: “We came up with ‘Draw the Line’ soon after we started organising back in January. To draw a line does not only literally mean to draw a line with your pencil, but also implies constituting borders. Physical boarders in the city for instance, but also the borders between our professions.” The goal was not to hand over a fixed line drawing for the audience: “We wanted to inspire students to ask questions and to critically draw lines themselves.” The week was divided into a subtheme per day, each highlighting a different angle towards ‘draw the line’. Here is a small overview: On Monday, a big question was asked: What are the differences between city and landscape, between urbanism and landscape architecture? In a way, the organisers asked themselves whether the name change of the week was valid. Jan Maarten: “The theme was ‘duality’. Both urbanists and landscape

architects unconsciously draw red and green in their plans, but what are our roles exactly? In what way do they differ or overlap?” Dirk Sijmons delivered the opening lunch lecture on regarding the city as a landscape- a collection of processes [see page 12]

understand these notions in a deeper way and play with them actively - another major insight was gained. What I expected to be a linear succession of lectures and workshops surpassed my expectations by far. Enjoyed days, useful knowledge, active experience and new acquaintances made this week a key time in my

Next to these lunch lectures, the organisers hosted three workshops every day: “Each workshops dealt with sub-question of the theme of that day,” Jan Maarten explains. “The first day we had workshops by the Province of South-Holland, Fabric, and Frits van Loon. Van Loon, for instance, sent his students into the field, without a map, but with a GPS tracker. The instructions were simple: walk towards this wind direction and just look and see what is landscape and what is city? Back at the faculty they were able to see which route everyone walked thanks to the tracker. This enabled the participants to discuss their findings whilst comparing them to a map.” On Tuesday the theme was ‘discovery’. “The focus was on drawing as a skill and a medium. The ‘Jongens van de Tekeningen’ lectured on drawing as a communication tool. They asked us to draw simple things, like and umbrella or a dog, and everyone drew roughly the same. But what if you have to draw ‘Leadership’? All of sudden we had different visual

images. By means of a drawing you are able to highlight different meanings of a word. The workshops of the second day focused on drawing as a tool for analysis, as a tool for representation, and as a tool for sketching.” The committee did not want to provide the students with a set of new drawings techniques, but help them ask the right question when using a drawing: “The goal was to make the attendees aware of the power of drawings and help them critically reflect on that power.” Wednesday this critical reflection continued with a new day’s theme: ‘dispositions’. What lines can you cross regarding ethics and morality? Jan Maarten: “At this technical university we are taught all kinds of skills, but we scarcely question these skills or the role of our profession. In the lunch lecture by Peter Kroes the key-question was: What makes you a good designer? Is it about skills, about technically functioning designs? What if you design with the best intentions, but the project fails; does that

make you a bad designer? No answers were given by Kroes, only questions to keep in mind.” Food for thought during lunch, but how to incorporate such a theme into workshops? “Roberto Rocco tipped a project of Harvard student Dana McKinney about racial segregation. Issues of races are barely discussed among designers and is unfortunately not present in the curriculum of the Harvard Design School or our own, whereas these issues have a big spatial component. In the workshop ways of positively influencing racial segregation through a design were discussed.” The other workshops by Imola Berczi of UNStudio and David Gianotten of OMA dealt with international practices within regional differences and design competitions respectively. “These subjects have become fields of study their own. They are so complex”.

The final subtheme on Thursday was ‘dialogue’. In the field of urbanism and landscape architecture the dialogue between different actors plays an import role. “This theme was inspired by the ‘bottom up’ trend,” Jan Maarten says. “How can we as designers help shape collective initiatives? Can we merge bottom up and top down approaches? Kristien Ring spoke about her research on different types of collective (commissioned) housing in Berlin. She argued that by working together people discover mutual interests unseen before and can really change a city. By giving up some personal interests during the process, the end result can surpass ones expectations. Workshops were provided by Hans Verhuizen on game urbanism, ZUS on their well-known bottom up practices, and by alumni and Archiprix NL 2015 laureate Francesca Rizzetto on collaborative communication. Every day ended with a debate between the present speakers. The structure of workshops, debates and lunch lectures was also new: “The previous edition consisted of a lot of lectures, but our goal was to provoke interaction. That is why we organised

workshops and debates afterwards in which the audience had the opportunity to react.” But there were no awkward silences according to Jan Maarten: “We got a lot of positive feedback on the discussions by both audience and speaker.” The first debate on the differences between urbanism and landscape architecture was one during which you might have expected the debaters to clash, but the debate soon ‘stranded’ in a consensus: “We all agreed on the fact that we do not differ that much. Although we have different backgrounds and work on different scales, we as urbanist and landscape architects, even architects, work in the same manner.” The perfect basis to continue organising an urban and landscape week, and not separate them, so it seems. To conclude the week, a debating café was arranged. “At first we wanted to organise a ‘standard’ closing debate. We asked alumni Bart Cosijn to host it. He suggested to turn it into a sort of talk show. We asked the speakers not to prepare anything. They were invited to sit down at a table and react to different statements provided by the host and the audience. By creating an informal, café-like setting, we made everyone feel at home. That helped bridge the gap between audience and the debaters. The edition was a big success with around 150 tickets sold. What can we expect in the future? “Next year the organiser can learn from this edition just as we did from last year. I would like to invite everyone to take part next time, not only Urbanism and Landscape Architecture students, but also students from other Master programmes. The lines between our professions might still exist, but we can learn from and inspire each other. In the end, we all draw a line every once in a while.”

Uitzichtloos Wie de nieuwsberichten naar de keel grijpen (bestormde asielzoekerscentra, motorclubliquidaties, het Nederlands elftal) zou in de verleiding kunnen komen om een paar kanalen verder te zappen en wel naar 24Kitchen, waar, zoals de naam zegt, 24 uur per dag gekookt wordt. Want daar is Rudolph, en Rudolph is vastbesloten om met zijn volstrekt authentieke opgewektheid elke aanval van Weltschmerz in de kiem te smoren. Rudolph van Veen heeft weliswaar kort, gebleekt haar en een kekke bril maar dat is de enige concessie die hij doet aan gewoon en net-als-jij zijn. Hij is gemarineerd in goeiigheid, doortrokken van braafheid en zo onschuldig als een groene asperge. Terwijl buiten de bootjes kapseizen doet Rudolph opgewekt de zoete aardappel in de bakpan. Alle ingrediënten liggen keurig klaar, de raspen, zeven en dunschillers staan in de aanslag. Het gaat er allemaal zo heerlijk huiselijk aan toe dat je haast vergeet dat die keuken ergens in een studio staat in plaats van gewoon in een vinexwijk. En dat op de rand van die vinexwijk oorlogsvluchtelingen met vuurwerk worden bekogeld. Nou snap ik wel dat je van een kookprogramma niet kunt verwachten dat het commentaar geeft op het wereldnieuws. Maar de peilloze onbezorgdheid in Rudolphs keuken staat op zó’n gespannen voet met de realiteit dat ik het programma eerder schadelijk vind dan onschuldig. Moeten we werkelijk gewoon maar dóór blijven koken, prei julienne snijden, bietjes schaven en zalmfilet op de huid bakken? En dan halsstarrig geloven dat als we daarmee doorgaan het allemaal wel meevalt? Dat de wereld een gekkenhuis moge zijn maar dat in onze keuken de Paradijselijke onschuld nog kan bestaan? Opeens valt het me op dat er in Rudolphs televisiekeuken geen ramen zitten. Dat verklaart een hoop. Hij kan helemaal niet naar buiten kijken! Natuurlijk ben je dan onwerelds opgewekt. We gunnen hem ’t maar. Het is trouwens af en toe best fijn om even naar te kijken.

They say that if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere - New York. Vaidotas Vaiciulis will see for himself if there is any truth to this maxim, as he hones his skills at REX, the architectural firm lead by Joshua Prince Ramus. Though he got his start in Lithuania, it was through an internship in a Dutch firm that he was introduced to the analytical method which our faculty is known for. Vaidotas spoke with us through Skype to share with us the story of his journey and his ultimate goal.

What was the reason that you chose to become an architect? I grew up in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Vilnius has a similar population to Rotterdam, but it is also two times smaller, making it a very dense city. Although the city has a medieval origin, about 80% of its current territory is occupied by ‘kruschiovkas’, apartment blocks that were built during the Soviet era. I grew up in one of these blocks, which made me very conscious of my environment. How did you persue your interest in your architectural surroundings? After obtaining my bachelor’s degree in Architecture from VGTU in Lithuania, I decided to look for professional experience abroad. I had the opportunity to work in an award-winning Dutch office: Maxwan architects+urbanists. That is where I was first introduced to the Dutch approach to architecture. I became fascinated with it, and this lead me to study architecture at TU Delft, one of the best universities for architecture in Europe. Another, far more practical reason for choosing to apply to Delft was that there was the possibility to receive financial support from the Dutch government. This was very convenient. During the two years of my studies, I worked as part­time dishwasher and lived

from my scholarship. This helped me to live independently from my family as well as motivated me to work harder in order to eventually receive my degree. Your motivation helped you receive an Archiprix nomination. How did you develop your graduation project? I did my graduation project at the chair of Complex Projects chair, lead by prof. Kees Kaan. During the first semester we were asked to work in teams and propose a masterplan/strategy for 240 ha vacant land in South Chicago. The programme stipulated the creation of an alternative for the “Lakeside Chicago” development designed by SOM and a potential alternative for Downtown Loop. We aimed for a holistic vision that would avoid gentrification and preserve the local identity. Our proposal offered a vision of unique “clusters”, different in size and programme, which could develop spontaneously and compete with each other. Each of these clusters were designed to meet the needs of the current community. For my own design, I chose to develop an interfaith cluster, which has a radial layout with the monumental Temple in the middle. While visiting Chicago, I was amazed how many segregated cultures and closed religious groups

the city contained. Religious buildings are often unoccupied throughout the day. After comprehensive analysis on different types of religious buildings, I discovered that they actually contain some common functions, which could be shared to create a more efficient and more communal interfaith building. “Temple of All Religions” consists of three main floors: sacral pools used for religious services; a public floor with shared programme such as a library, exhibition hall, canteen, and community room; and finally interfaith floor which has five major religious clusters containing a church, a synagogue, a mosque, Buddhist and Hindu temples and small rooms for other religious communities. The clusters are carved out from structural steel grid and placed at the same level to avoid any hierarchy. Generally speaking, the whole building is organized in such way that communities would often interact and share their beliefs. My tutors were very intrigued by this unique typology and felt it deserved an Archiprix nomination. How did you end up working for REX? Personally, I always try to search for new ways to gain experience. I think travelling is a crucial thing for our profession. I knew I wanted to gain more experience in a new, challenging environment. During my studies I applied a grant from BAFF organization, which provides an opportunity for young talented young people, from different professional fields, to gain experience in the US. More than 400 people from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia apply each year. It turned out that I was one of the lucky ones. This financial support helped me to obtain a position in REX, a New York based office lead by Joshua Prince Ramus.

and certainly has some “Dutchness” in his architecture. Therefore, the methodology and their approach to design are rather familiar to me. He has an intelligent team: they dare to question everything that is conventional, observe and learn and then propose something unexpected. It is a relatively small office, around 30 employees at the moment, which means that every team member has a lot of responsibility. It is also not an easy environement, but I enjoy it, because I am being challenged. Currently I am working on 3000 m2 residential project, Necklace Residence, in Long Island, New York and on a yet to be named Performing Arts Center in a yet to be revealed major American city. I am proud to be able to work on such prestigious projects. I know that in my country we could not afford to invest in such ambitious architecture. What is your next step? My current goal is to learn as much as possible from my time abroad. Eventually I will bring back all of my knowledge and experience to my home country. Even though the current projects in Lithuania are rather small, I believe that there is a lot of potential to create high quality architecture.

How would you describe working in REX? Are you able to utilize the Dutch approach you sought to learn here in Delft? I am happy to be working in this amazing office. Joshua is a former patner of OMA

Het woord als ding Artifact Pierijn van der Putt

Geen vluchtiger objecten dan woorden: als ze zijn uitgesproken, trilt de lucht kortstondig en dan verdwijnen ze weer alsof ze er nooit zijn geweest. Geen wonder dat beloftes zo vaak gebroken worden. Maar in hun korte bestaan zijn woorden heel even tastbaar. Dan nemen ze ruimte in, regenen op onze huid, roffelen op ons trommelvlies en stuiteren door onze schedel. Dan zijn ze heel even een ding - en wij beeldhouwers.

Op YouTube kun je een fragment vinden van een interview van Steve Allen met Jack Kerouac, de schrijver van het legendarische boek ‘On the Road’, waarvoor hij een geheel eigen schrijfstijl ontwikkelde geïnspireerd door de jazzmuziek van zijn tijd. Het interview is een aanfluiting. In de oppervlakkigheid van de vragen en het feit dat Allen helemaal niet luistert naar zijn gast, ligt de enorme tragiek van het leven van Kerouac besloten. Maar Kerouac leest ook voor. En dan hoor je plotseling wat hij bedoelde met zijn ‘spontaneous prose’. Zijn lijzige East Coast accent rijgt de woorden aaneen en openbaart een cadans die in de gedrukte woorden niet zichtbaar is. De tekst komt op stoom. Een band komt tot leven. Een opsomming van evocaties eindigt met de p’s en ff’en van ‘...cups the peaks and folds the final shore in.’ Daarna de climax, het woord ‘nobody’ gevolgd door nógmaals ‘nobody’ en daarna hun schaduw, ‘anybody’, uitmondend in het barse ‘rags’ waarvoor Kerouac een moment stilte laat vallen als om de onverbiddelijkheid van het menselijk lot te onderstrepen. En ten slotte de afwikkeling: drie keer dezelfde frase met wat vulsel ertussen; een verzuchting vermengd met weemoed, het einde van een vriendschap en een tijdperk. Dit fragment reciteer ik regelmatig. Net als Het Uur U van Martinus Nijhof, gedichten van Antjie Krog, stukken tekst van Philip Roth. Met mezelf als enige toehoorder. Omdat woorden moeten klinken, niet alleen maar gelezen worden. Voor de volgende Artifact nomineer ik Geert Coumans, als medewerker van de maquettewerkplaats een van de makers van onze faculteit.

This project aims to create a residential building where most of the daily and domestic life of the inhabitant is organized in the collective space of the residential building. Inhabitants share domestic facilities and services and the private domain of the individual is minimized. The ‘house’ or ‘home’ of a person is thus no longer delimited to the private dwelling, but extends to the collective space of the residential building. My prior research focused on human behavior with regards to the built environment. By investigating people’s privacy behavior in relation to the residential environment and the dwelling this research created the framework that forms the basis of my design. The fnal design delivers the confortable, secluded and controlled environment that individuals seek in a private dwelling, while further providing the social, economic and practical advantages of collective living.

Like an archaeologist, I have read the city as a palimpsest of permanences and uprootedness. By tracing material cycles and paths, from extraction to consumption, I have questioned the limitations of this linear system of territorial and material exploitation. Istanbul contains many material and immaterial resources that can be harvested, made accessible and re-used, as an alternative to the ruthless exhaustion and entropy of new ones and new territory. The project questions the fundamental schism and decentralisation of the city’s own metabolic organs. By their re-centralisation, it also takes on the role of reclaiming and recuperating ruinous parts of the city, in this case an old ottoman barrack. As an urban infrastructure part of a network, the project is a node where electronic waste is refned into raw materials. The refnery arranges an underground access to smooth logistics, whilst framing a dialectical urban ground for the neighbourhood. It incorporates repair-workshops for new types of craftsmanship. Structure and ornament are unifed by a specifc casting construction process, exploring the plasticity of self standing walls.

The research and design consider the shifting role of the bank in the system of fnance and its architecture in parallel to that. Finance developed to an all-pervading institution, which is studied through the historical analysis of the bank, its tasks, responsibilities, in parallel to bank architectures that cover the same period in time. From the research emerged an understanding of fnance as the relation between the creditor and the debtor. The project for the Dutch Central Bank in Amsterdam is conceived as a courtyard building, a central open space delimited by an (inhabited) wall, which works as a catalogue of the representational, a collection of representational rooms found through the research. Opposing the creditor, and its physical representation in the Central Bank is the Debtor’s square. Where the creditor is able to maintain and delimit a geometrically unaffected plot, the Debtor’s square is adjusted to its condition, roads cross, trams pass and trees grow.

Forms, performances and realms of self-entrepreneurship in Havana. The recent implementation of Cuba’s most ambitious plan for economic transformation since the Revolution of 1959 arouse great interest both on international media and between scholars worldwide. Several analyses focused on Raúl Castro’s actualización del modelo económico from a political and economical perspective. Our contribution has tackled this topic with the apparatus of another discipline, Architecture, in order to understand and unveil its spatial, urban, built and discoursive implications. Following an unprecedented researcxh on how one of the measures constituting the reform, cuentapropismo (self-entrepreneurship), is affecting on different scales both the built environment and the refected social one, the intervention strategy, far from merely proposing solutions, aims to reveal and criticise the current idiosyncratic adjustment of the economic model in a proactive way. The proposal seeks to constitute a critical laboratory capable of challenging a series of dynamics, whilst redefning the role of the architect as an organiser and as an active actor of cultural and political thinking.

This project proposes to adress the infrastructure of mobility as a tool for urbanization in the context of Addis Abeba. It seeks to establish synergies between the market-driven densifcation and the inner-city slum upgrading processes by introducing a new evolutive fgure, possible generator of an inclusive urbanity. Therefore the project aims to act as a mediator between two speeds (immanent / transient), two scales (territorial / local) and two axis (longitudinal / transversal). As the Ethiopian capital, many African cities are subject to a massive economical and demographical growth challenging the existing urban condition. The infrastructure of mobility is a key element in the modernization process and thus needs to be reconsidered. By proposing an alternative way of thinking, this project questions the integration and place of such a fundamental fgure within these cities, but also in our western context.

The main goal of this graduation project – based on the desire to create a resilient urban environment -is to prevent the city of London from fooding, retrench the pressure in existing areas and to reduce the need for the «super sewer». Moreover the phases of transformation from existing space to a new form, function, or facilities are investigated. In this case the aim is to illustrate how adaptable existing urban fabric can be. This adaptive urban fabric contributes to more attractive and vibrant street life, therefore the project makes the city not only resilient, but also an even more interesting place. The adaptive character of urban environment can be best compared with a water park – some elements are used to transport water, others are used to store water, but they work as one system.

Researching the values of the sense of touch. A School for Blinds and Visual Impaired, a Neighborhood Center and a Music School The Japanese technique of Kintsugi, in which broken porcelain is repaired with gold, is the starting point of the design. The seams of gold unite the old shards giving it a new value, uniting old and new, the worthless and the valuable. The head structures of two old buildings form the old ‘shards’ to which the ‘shards’ of the new architecture are added. The new additions don’t follow always the boundaries of the old buildings, they form a variety of structures giving the idea of a labyrinth. By having architectural elements within arm length the blind are helped in fnding their way. Special attention is paid to different tactile qualities to enhance the recognizability of the spaces. Touch (not vision) is the dominant sense behind the plan. The different surfaces are like the wrinkles of the elephant in Hokusai’s drawing which help the blind men in forming an image of the animal.

The exponential growth and inauguration of refugees around the world transform the connotation of the temporary perception. New cities build by refugees occur around the globe in exiled locations with scarce connections to the existing population for ten, twenty or even forty years. Generations are born, living and working in camps with no external contact. Poor conditions in the camps demoralise refugees to take part in the new beginning.This research addresses the refugee camp, “Dara Shakran”, as an evolving city. A city, which should have been developed with the mindset for the future. The isolated attribute of the city is embraced. Solutions on generating energy, reusing waste, building with local materials are the frst steps to the creation of the off- the-grid city.

Ten years ago the Ethiopian government started a mass housing program to deal with the current housing shortage in the capital town, Addis Ababa. All around the city similar housing blocks are built, from small scale interventions in the inner city to large scale developments in the periphery. The urban layout of the peripheral neighborhoods is similar to the modernistic ideas of large housing blocks in open felds. A suburban landscape is created with compounds that consist of around six housing blocks that have little or no connection with the street life. This results in a public landscape that has little connection to the buildings and the people that live in them. The design proposal focuses on one of these peripheral neighborhoods that has been build six years ago. By introducing a new type of housing block the public space is transformed from a vacant unpleasant landscape into a network of pedestrian streets and public places. The adaptable construction of the block together with the urban strategy makes this design proposal relevant for the whole city.

Our very first Archiprix Special is rather simple. We wanted to honour the nine selected graduation projects by giving them their own space in Bnieuws. The initial batch of 46 nominees were all excellent and the jury must have had a tough time picking out the cream of the crop. Through our process of developing this topsy-turvy layout and closely observing the themes and designs, questions were raised which have yet to be addressed. Being nominated marks a special moment for graduates. But what sets the Archiprix apart from other competitions and why does the faculty put so much stock into winning it? Does winning say something about the student, the project, the faculty, or the jury’s selection procedure? Does the Archiprix focus on a certain aesthetic or topic and do we run the risk of molding our projects to meet their demands all for the sake of winning? And what does winning get you in the long run? These are all topics we would like to explore, hopefully exactly a year from now, in our second Archiprix Special.
