ABSTRACT
In teaching and learning process, especially teaching listening, teachers of English at SMP Pusri use some techniques to increase the students’ motivation. To reach the objective of teaching English using certain media,
the
teachers can use computers as a way of motivating students to master oral receptive and productive skills such as listening and speaking. The population of the study was all the seventh year students of SMP YSP Pusri Palembang in the academic of 2005/2006. The sample was 70 students. The computer as one of the teaching media used in developing the students’ mastery in the receptive and productive skills. It is hypothesized that using a computer as the instructional media significantly to develop
the students’ mastery in the receptive and
productive skills. To prove the hypothesis, a test was performed. The type of test is the completion test by completing sentences, matching the pictures and completing dialogues and interview given. It is used to know whether the guessing picture game with the computer is significantly effective or not in teaching listening skills. From the analysis of data, it can be concluded that the guessing picture game with computer was significantly effective to increase the students’ mastery in listening skills. It can be found out from the results of the matched t-test calculation which gave 9.77 and 10.69 as the tobt as the critical value. In addition, the result of the interview showed that 80% of them said that they got bored when being taught using old technique, 100% of them said that they like when being taught using the game, 100 % of the students said that they got interesting in studying English, 100% of them said that they got usefulness in understanding the material and no students (0%) said that they got boredom of this technique.
