Abstraksi: Inspirasi pembaruan pendidikan Islam di Indonesia secdrd tradisional selalu berasal dari dua sumber: Barat dan/aau Timur Tengah. Pengaruh Barat umumnya dibawa oleh pemerinab kolonial Belanda, sedangkan dari Timur Tengah dibaua oleh keturunan Arab dtdu pdrd pelajy Indonesia yang studi ke negara tersebut. Puncak pengarub pernbaruan dari Tirnur Tengah ialah pada tahun 1930-dn yang dinilai oleh para sejarahuan sebagai periode kepulangan sejumlah alumni Tirnur Te n

S e rn an gat p e m b ar uan rnereka begitu kuat sehingga mereka memandang per/u rnendirikan Iembaga pendidikan tersendiri yang berbeda dari pendidikan Islam
tradisional. Tujuannya ialah untuk menyebarkan gagasan pembaruan yang diterima dari ternpat asal belajar kepada murid-murid di tanah air, Pondok Modern Gontor adalah satu contoh keberhasilan alumni Tintur Tengah dalam memompakan semangdt pembaruan pendidikan Islarn . Pesantren Gontor didirikan pada tahun 1926 oleh tiga bersaudara yang sering disebut dengan Trimurti, yaitu Ahmad Sahal, Zainuddin Fanani dan zarkasyi. Sejak kelahirannya pesantren ini memang sudah berorientasi pernbaruan. Dari tingkat pendidikan dasar dan menengab pertamd, pdrd murid sudah diajarkan pengetahuan urnLltn, kesenian, bela
diri dan kepanduan, di
samping pengetahuan agarna Islam.
Pembaruantersebut lebih diintensifkan lagi pada periode berikurnya ter.utama sejak Zarkasyi aktif dalam pengembangan Gontor, yakni pada tahun 1936. Peranan Zarknsyi dalam pembaruan Gontor begitu besar s,ehingga kemodernan Gontor sekarang pada hakikatnya berkat usaha keras tokoh

mengembdngkan kemampuan berbahasa Arab, sedang di Kulliyatul Mu'illimin Istam4ry,ah (iut)'sumatra Barat yang dipimpin Mahmud Yunus, alumni Darul Ulum Kairo, Zarkasyi memperoleh ilmu dan pengalaman yang luar biasa tenang belaiar dan mengajar berdasar prin sip-prinsip pen getah uan mo dern.

Zir'kasyi kimudian berusaha melakukan eksperimen di Pesanten Gontor. Langkzh pertam| yang dilakukannya ialah konsentrasi.lada diberi nama Kulllryarul Mu'allimin pendidikan -kkm4auh tingkoi menengah yang (KMI). Ia teap mempuuhankan unsur utdmd pesdntrm dalam KMI iuantren Gontor, kec'uali penekanan kitab kuning' Pelbagai pelajaran Aqa'id, al-Qur'an, taiwid, tafstr, hadith, rtkih, ushul fiqh 'diajarkan, titapi diusabakan menggunakan buku-buku yang disusun beidasar prinslp pengajaran modern. Zarkasyi sendiri berusaha rnenulis sebagian'buku pigoigannya. Sebagai lembaga yang bertujuan membina pori calon gu* igo*o, KMI juga rnengaiarkan llmu Jiua Pendidikan, ^Asas-asas DldaktiE, Sejarah Pendidikan, Ilmu Sosial, Biologi, berhitung, ilmu bumi, ilmu bayat, tata neyurd, bahasa Inggeris, iuga kepanduan' Bahasa Arab dan Inggeris diaiarkan dengan menggunakan direct method, dan keduanya dijadikan bahasa pengajaran dan percakapan sehari-hari di pesanven. Metode bandongan, sorogan dan wercn ditingalkan karena dipandang lambat dalam membina kernampuan pr*oho*or. sebagai pngganti kemudian diterapkan sistem kksikalyang 'mengatur kenaikan tingkat, pembagian kelas, pembatdsan masa belajar dan adminstrasi se ko lah. Setelah eksperimen pembaruan Pesantren Gontor berhasil mencetak lulusan berkualitas dan minat masyarakat terhadap pesantren ini juga besar, perhatian selanjutnya diarahkan pada pembentukan perguruan tinggi. Pada tanggal t7 Nopember 1963, didirih'an Perguruan Tinggi Darussalam (PTD) yang kemudian diubah nhmdnyd menjadi Institut Pendidikan Darus;salam (IPD). Tuiuan pendiriannya ialab untuk memenubi kebutuhan dosen-dosen di perguruan tinggi. Sebagai Rektor, Zarkasyi ingin mengembangkan IPD sebagai perpaduan dari kekuaan empat uniaersitas, yaitu Universitas al'Azhar dari sisi uakafnya yang sdngat kuat, Aligarh di India dari kemodernannya, Shantinikean di India dari kedamaimannya dan Syanggit di Afrikd dari segi keikhlasan para pengasuhnya. Dibanding KMI, perkernbangan IPD memang terbilang larnbat. Namun demikian, pergurudn tingi ini kini telah mentperoleh p e n gakuan dari pe lb agai un iv er sitas di I uar n e geri ; p ada tah un 1 9 8 0 dari Darul [Jlurn, 1984 dari Unipersitas Punjab Lahore, Pakistan, 1989 dari (Jn ivesristas Islam Internasional Islamabad.
