BASIC TYPES OF CLOCKS AND WATCHES There are many different types of clocks and watches. They are different in what they are used for, what they can do or how they are made. Here are some basic examples: A wristwatch is called like this because it is worn on the wrist. It has two straps connected to the watch and then wrapped around the wrist and connected to each other. A pocket watch is kept in a pocket. It is usually connected to a short chain which is connected to the person’s clothes. That is why you cannot lose it. A sundial is an old form of a clock which uses the Sun to tell time. An alarm clock is a clock that makes a sound (often a buzzing or a bell-like sound) or plays music at a certain time. It is used by people to wake up from sleep at a time they choose. A grandfather clock is a tall clock that stands on a floor. It uses a pendulum to tell time. ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK An astronomical clock is a clock with special mechanisms and dials that display also astronomical information, for example the relative positions of the sun, moon, zodiac signs and sometimes also some planets. One of the most famous of this type clock is the Old-Town Hall clock in Prague, Czech Republic. The central part was completed in 1410. It was made by a clockmaker Mikuláš of Kodaň and Jan Šindel who was a professor at Charles University. There are four figures, the most famous is Death represented by a skeleton that strikes the time. On the hour there is a presentation of statues of the Apostles at the doorways above the clock, with all twelve presented at noon. In 1870 a calendar display was added below the clock. During World War II the clock was nearly destroyed by fire. The people tried to save most of the parts. It was gradually renovated till 1948. In 1978 the clock was once more cleaned and renovated. According to local legend the city will suffer if the clock is neglected. The other famous astronomical clock in the Czech Republic is in Olomouc. [7]
