LONDO n
Travel guide for Mavo 3
Introductie

DAY 1
Clink261 is London’s new boutique hostel. It’s a brand new, trendy and stylish accommodation in the very centre of London. The hostel attracts a diverse mix of travellers of all ages from all over the world. Clink261’s location is one of the best in London: it’s situated on the doorstep of the metro station St Pancras Kings Cross. From there it’s only a hop to all the attractions we’re going to visit. And it’s a pity for you that you’re not allowed to drink, because Europe’s longest Champagne bar is at this metro station. So if you don’t know where your teachers are… maybe they are having a good time while sipping at a glass of Chardonnay.
Covent Garden Covent Garden is a marketplace with all kinds of extraordinary stores. Around the market there are a lot of street artists.
Blood Brothers Blood Brothers is a musical written by Willy Russel. The first show was in 1988, that makes it one of the longest running musicals in London theatre. The musical revolves around fraternal twins who were separated at birth. The twins grew up in a different social environment. One became an Oxbridge-graduated councillor and the other unemployed and in prison. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a tear in their friendship and leading to tragic deaths.
It will probably be the first time that you’re visiting an English spoken musical. It’s not very easy to follow it, therefore you have already talked about the story in English class so you can really enjoy the show.
DAY 1
Tower Bridge
HMS Belfast
The Tower Bridge is a bridge over the river Thames and has been completed in 1894. It’s an iconic symbol for London. The bridge consists of two towers which are tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways. From there you have a wide view over London.
The HMS Belfast was launched in 1938 to serve in the second world war. It had an important role in destroying the German cruiser Scharnhorst. After the war the Belfast worked for the United Nations in Korea. When the British Navy stopped using the Belfast, it became a museum.
Borough Market Borough Market is one of the oldest markets in London. Food has been traded here for over 250 years! It’s situated under a railway bridge nearby London Bridge. It’s location is so unique that it could be a film set. Jamie Oliver has been spotted here several times.
Harrods is the most famous department store in London. The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique, which means: All Things for All People, Everywhere. And that’s true; at Harrods you can buy almost everything. The store has 90.000 m2 selling space in over 330 departments.
DAY 2
Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the London home and primary residence of the British monarch: Queen Elizabeth. It’s being used to live and to work. It is also being used for state visits. Every day you can watch the ceremony called: changing the guards. It is the process involving a new guard exchanging duty with the old guard. It is a very impressive thing to see, with horses, beautiful uniforms, yelled orders and marching music.
DAY 3
Jack the Ripper
Somewhere in the world today are the rotting remains of a man so evil that he struck terror into the people who lived in the richest and largest city in the world, the year was 1888, the City was London and a man they called..... Jack the Ripper. There was and still is a lot of controversy over who Jack the Ripper was. Could he have been a madman seeking a thrill from butchering East End prostitutes? Or was there more to it than meets the eye, a Doctor needing human organs for research, or a freemason tasked to rid the streets of black mailing prostitutes, were members of the Royal Family or the Royal Physician directly involved. Inspector Aberline of Scotland Yard was the man tasked to investigate the case and knew more about Jack the Ripper than any man alive. He walked the streets of Whitechapel himself by night hoping he would be at the scene when the Ripper next struck. But why did he not mention his most famous case when he wrote his memoirs? During our nightly walking tour we will discover all about Jack the Ripper.
SOHO
Soho is one of the most fashionable and tolerant parts of London. Because of that, you can see a lot of different people there. By night, Soho becomes packed with Londoners and tourists eager for some entertainment. You’re too young to visit the pubs, bars and clubs, but it’s really nice to walk through the streets and look at everything you can do once you’ll turn 18.
DAY 3
Emirates Stadium
Science Museum
The Emirates Stadium is the home base of football club Arsenal. The stadium offers a seat to 60.000 people, by which it is the second largest stadium in England. The stadium was opened on 22 July 2006 with a game between Arsenal and Ajax. The first goal was scored by Huntelaar, but Arsenal won the game by 2-1. We’ll visit the stadium for those who want to.
The Science Museum is the biggest museum of its kind in the world. You can see, feel and experience the biggest inventions of the last 300 years. For example, the steam engine, fighter jets, flight simulations, climate science, Who am I, and a lot more.
