Abstract of the discussions: (Write a short abstract on the main messages in the event, the outcomes of the event) (max. ½ page) The Congress is organized by NPW (National Heat Pump Platform of which AgencyNL is projectpartner and one of the initiators of the Congress) The Congress was focusing on monitoring as: The application of Heat pump technology can give a reduction in CO2 emissions and uses considerably less energy than conventional heating systems. o But how much energy is really saved by applying heat pumps o Where are the advantages of heat pumps over condensing boilers and where any disadvantages? o What can be reasons that the projected benefits with heat pumps are not achieved in practical applications? o How can any of the disadvantages of heat pumps be solved and expanded into benefits? o How can heat pumps applied on a larger scale (cost-) effectively be integrated into the e;ectricity grid? To provide answers on these questions a thorough monitoring is crucial. Main part of the discussion and the results are used in the D5.3 – report on ‘Important factors for improvement of heat pump system performance and quality’. 1. Focus of the discussion initiated by AgencyNL was on the difference in proces, economy and performance, between heat pumps with collective and individual ground sources for terrasced houses in the domestic sector. This discussion was based upon a SEPEMO-survey by the AgencyNL on these systems. Presentations on the congress showing good SPF results with individual systems confirmed the preliminary conclusions of the survey for ground source systems. A major project developer stated that in any collective project an exploitant has to manage the system by which the end user almost always will get higher operational costs. When also the experience shows lower energy performances it could be that collective source systems should be avoided in the residential sector for individual homes. However a better insight must still be gained and newe projects should be monitored according to the SEPEMO-protocol. 2. Grid Operators showed their concern on the effects on the grid by large scale application of heat pumps in the residential sector. When peak loads occur these have to be reckoned with when designing the grid. Traditionally the grid is designed based upon a well known graph of daily use and grids in the Netherlands have a relatively small capacity. This capacity will already have to be increased by 100% for heat pumps in an all electric system. However by monitoring two large building projects it was established that the peak load demand was higher. Because of the demands in the legislation water has to be heated up to 60oC to avoid legionella growth. As these back up heaters are switched on at the same moment a peak occurs in the late evening of the day. This causes a problem. 3. Grid Operators also raised the question whether there could be switch off moment during the heating season in order to reduce the overall capacity. However at peak winter demand some of the heat pumps had a full day operation time with no possible switch off moments. In another

project there were however shorter running times monitored. It still has to analysed where the differences can be found. 4. An EsCo noted that the same typ of building can give different energy demands dependent on the inhabitants. The monitored differences in two projects were energy uses that averaged 14.6 GJ’s per dwelling in one case and 24.1 GJ’s in another case. The first project was inhabited by young starters and the second project by elderly pensioneered people. Also the temperature levels for heating differed. FEED- BACK QUESTIONAIRE (Deliverable 7) A questionnaire was filled in by 32 participants. They awarderd this congress the high mark of 7.9 out of 10! General remarks were made: o To show more practical information on possibilities for system optimization o Next congress should be on solutions for occurring problems for installers o Give more insight in the consequences of application of heat pumps compared to gas boilers o Lack of practical figures, there are many measurements, present them! o More practice should be given for housing corporations o Let installers give their experiences instead of consultants o Give more data on renovation project with heat pumps. o Monitoring data in practice with more depth and on operating cost-benefit ratio’s USE IF APPLICABLE THE PARTICIPANTS LIST ON THE NEXT PAGE!
