Primrose Hill Nestled between Camden Town and Regents Park and just over a mile from London’s West End - Primrose Hill has one of the loftiest vantage points over the city. Well known as a writer’s and artist’s enclave, the area is now popular with media stars who can often be seen strolling around the village
The Regents park, London

New London Architecture New London Architecture is a vital addition to the public debate about the future of London. The capital is undergoing a period of massive change and NLA is a place where everyone - professionals, politicians and public - can find out and get involved in what is happening to their city. The NLA space is a centre for display as well as a centre for debate and for networking. It is where visitors to London can orientate themselves, where school children can learn about their environment, where communities can be consulted. A permanent exhibition of a 1:1500 scale model of Central London, surrounded by a display showing a cross section of current building projects, is enhanced by a programme of temporary exhibitions addressing London issues. New London Architecture is funded by companies and organisations that have an interest in promoting and improving the awareness of high quality design for the built environment in London to a professional and public audience.

Tower of London, Tower bridge, Tower Hill en Tower Hill Plaza
Tower Hill was designed to accommodate the crowds visiting one of England’s most visited tourist sites: the Tower of London. The creation of a paved slope with expansive views of the Tower and the River Thames was a good idea. The abstract modern aesthetic has the virtue of treating the surroundings as the key visual and historic interest of the place. The architect’s pitiless commitment to glass, cold steel and granite is questionable. One can see from Stanton William’s other work that they are minimalists. They love the immutable precision of hard materials - but Tower Hill would have had much more charm if, using the same geometry, a contextual choice of materials had been made. The planting is ornamental. When empty, the plaza has the terrifying greyness of a holocaust memorial. The plaza works well when hidden by the crowds on a busy summer afternoon. But in the blazing light of dawn the design looks better suited to a shopping centre in Luton than the most historic landscape in London. One day, we must all hope, water will be restored to the moat surrounding the tower and the opportunity should then be taken to re-consider the design of Tower Hill Plaza. This is one of the most important historic sites in Europe and it should have a better landscape design.
The Future of St Katharine Docks St Katharine’s Investments has plans to create the most desirable city-centre marinas in the world at St Katharine Docks and make it one of the best places to live, work and visit in London.
Following consultation with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the local community, statutory consultees and other stakeholders, St Katharine’s Investments have submitted revised planning applications for listed building consent and conservation area consent for the Docks. With a new architectural approach for Devon House, along with improvements to a redeveloped Commodity Quay, these revised applications will have all the benefits of improved gateway entrances, boardwalks, public spaces, shops and restaurants as the previous applications submitted in December 2005.
Pottersfieldspark, southwark The design consists of an intimate neighbourhood park facing Tooley Street which gradually opens up towards the river which stepped terraces. The neighbourhood park will be planted which a rich variety of herbaceous plants and grasses designed by Piet Oudolf of the Netherlands. Curved hedges will provide structure and reinforce the direction of the main path. The original alignment of boundary fence and park entrance would be retained and upgraded with new railings. Seats would be incorporated and the existing gravestones displayed in a special feature. Other features include sculptural trellises with climbing plants. The presence of the GLA building as seen from the park is softened up with a newly introduced grove of birch trees. A small kiosk is envisaged to provide facilities for park users and office workers. The large grassed area is stepped toward the river walk and allows for views towards Tower Bridge, The Tower of London and the City skyline. This public frontage of the park contains a variety of special designed elements. A large strip of pavement with English Delftware pattern cuts through the grass and reflects upon the sites’ history. Europe’s largest picnic bench is positioned here to enjoy one of London’s most prominent views.
More London
A new development on the south bank of the River Thames, immediately south-west of Tower Bridge in London. The southern exit is on Tooley Street. It includes the City Hall, a sunken amphitheatre called The Scoop, office blocks, shops, cafes, and a pedestrianized area containing open-air sculptures and water features, including fountains lit by coloured lights. There are frequently outdoor exhibitions and cultural events in More London, usually associated with City Hall. For most of 2005 there was a popular open-air exhibition of large environmental photographs called Earth from the Air.

Leicester Square
Gillespies London, UK, 2004-2006 As one of London’s most visited spaces and an important national icon, the redesign of London‘s Leicester Square is nationally significant. Gillespies‘ design response balances the preservation of the best historic elements whilst updating it for a more contemporary look and feel to make it more visually attractive. Modern technology supports the excellent design in greatly increasing the capacity and flexibility of the space.

The London Millennium Footbridge is a pedestrian-only steel suspension bridge crossing the River Thames in London, England, linking Bankside with the City. It is located between Southwark Bridge (downstream) and Blackfriars Bridge (upstream). It was the first new bridge across the Thames in London since Tower Bridge in 1894 and it is owned and maintained by Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. The southern end of the bridge is near Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery and Tate Modern, the north end next to the City of London School below St Paul’s Cathedral. The bridge alignment is such that a clear view of St Paul’s south facade is presented from across the river, framed by the bridge supports, thus providing one of London’s most photogenic views of the cathedral.
Tate Modern
The former Bankside Power Station has been developed into the Tate Modern Art Gallery and a bridge built over the Thames to St Paul’s Cathedral. The area has become one of the foremost tourist destinations in London. But so much money was spent on the gallery conversion that hardly any was left for landscape design of the area between the the gallery and the river. A fresh green space was designed (1999-2000) by the Kienast Vogt Partnership in association with Charles Funke Associates. But the expanse of bitumen macadam blacktop between the green space and the river is appalling. It is a disgrace to London. It is an insult to the city’s visitors.

Lyric Square, Hammersmith, Gross Max, uitgevoerd in 2004.
What was once a dangerous and unpleasant road, Hammersmith Gore, is now the new Lyric Square in front of a regenerated theatre; a space which allows light and vibrancy to spill out form the surrounding buildings. The hard landscape has been creatively designed in cream and Irish Blue limestone, detailed with a circle of black granite containing a cluster of twelve fountains, set flush into the ground. The landscape design has been complimented with plane trees, and ground lights, in stainless steel fittings, take the square through to a night-time space, enhancing the bespoke features, tree canopies and fountains. This is a much-needed vibrant space and the quality of the workmanship enhances its importance in the development of the area.
Our Experience: Paddington Basin, London The past few years have seen major changes at Paddington Basin in the form of new buildings and bridges, a renovated water space and a new landscape setting. In order to reach this point Gillespies took the original masterplan which addressed the wider space in which Paddington Basin is a part, and followed the recommendations in this to produce a detailed design for the Basin area. The public realm strategy addressed access routes from surrounding streets and made recommendations intended to set an appropriate character and quality benchmark. It also identified a range of uses for the public spaces. The public realm strategy specifically makes allowances for the inclusion of three artist designed bridge crossing points, an amphitheatre to accommodate the influx of new business people, extensive timber pontoons, and the reclamation of the canal edges for walkways. Phase one of the development has been delivered and the rigorous implementation in particular has lead to a highly accessible space with award-winning bridges and a high quality landscape.
