3. Objectives DVZ – In compliance with the Oslo and Paris conventions this study evaluates the quality of the marine environment and the possible harmful effects of dredging and sand extraction on the water column, the sediment and the benthos-demersal community. Sampling areas extend from the Belgian and Netherlands Continental Shelf to the Western Scheldt. Ecological monitoring studies parameters in the water column (salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, material in suspension, turbidity and volatile hydrocarbons (PAH, PCB) and also sediment (Al, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn, interstitial water, carbonate contents, total organic carbon, grain size and silt content), demersal fish, fish diseases and heavy metals in epibenthos (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, Zn). WIV – Radiological survey of the North Sea in the vicinity of the Franco-Belgian border; influence of aquatic releases from foreign nuclear sites on the marine environment and on the food chain. BMM – The project is part of the continuous surveillance and evaluation of the quality of the marine environment in the region of the Belgian continental shelf (BCP) and the Western Scheldt estuary in the framework of international (the Joint Assessment en Monitoring Programme (JAMP) and the Nutrient Monitoring Programme (NMP) of the OSPAR commission) and national programmes (e.g. impact of sand extraction and dredging activities). MUMM is solely responsible for the sampling and determination of nutrients, salinity, suspended matter, dissolved Oxygen, TOC and POC, chlorophyll a, phaeophytine and optical parameters in the water column. Phytoplankton biomass and species composition as well as benthos species composition and biomass are also determined as part of the monitoring programme. For the determinants heavy metals (e.g. Hg, Cd, Pb) and organic contaminants (e.g. PCBs, PAHs, OCPs) in sediment and biota, MUMM collaborates with the Sea Fisheries department of the Centre for Agricultural Research both for sampling and analysis. ULg – Unit of Chemical Oceanography In order to enquire the Belgian Coast within this period, continual seawater samplings were carried out. A series of filtrations was accomplished in order to measure the basic parameters that represent the productivity of each sampling point

Remarks •
The cruise didn’t take off until 19:00 on Monday evening because of some delays.
•
The boarding of the pilot in Vlissingen was delayed as he did not arrive on time. Consequently the sampling times of the Schelde points were later than planned. Because of this the seacat could not reach the bottom at sampling point S15 as the current was to strong for a depth of 51 meters.
•
Touch and go in Zeebrugge on Wednesday 21/04 to drop off the fish as they would not survive the day on de Schelde.
•
K. Cooreman was disembarked on Thursday in Antwerp with the zodiac.
•
During the cruise data is logged with a frequency of 1 sample every 10 seconds. A timestamp, position (DGPS), absolute and relative heading, speed, water depth, heave, absolute and relative wind direction, wind speed (m/s and Beaufort), atmospheric pressure, water temperature, air temperature (dry and wet), relative humidity, solar radiation and salinity are registered.

Addendum II : Partim Ulg Report on the participation of A. Lourantou (from University of Liège, Unit of Chemical Oceanography) during the Belgica campaign 09/2004 The work during this campaign (09) in the vessel Belgica for the University of Liege, was done by a master student of the University Paris VI, in collaboration with the University of Liege In order to enquire the Belgian Coast within this period, continual seawater samplings were carried out. A series of filtrations was accomplished in order to measure the basic parameters that represent the productivity of each sampling point. Seawater samples were collected every 30minutes. Oxygen was immediately fixed with Winkler reagents in bottles of 300mL (Winkler bottles), a good stirring ensued and after 4 hours, the sample was ready for Oxygen Analysis using the titration method. The sample was then filtered through special SARTORIUS filters of cellulose acetate (porosity 0,45ìm). The final liquid samples of phosphate, nitrate and nitrite were conserved in the freezer (temperature of 20oC). Those of silica, though, were conserved in the refrigerator, after the addition of 40ìL of concentrated HCl, so as to avoid any change on the score of bacteria's. A second filtration took place just after the collection of nutrient samples: Approximately 250 ml of seawater were filtered through glass microfiber filters of Whatman GF/F. The filter was covered with aluminium foil and was conserved in the freezer for further analysis in the laboratory of chlorophylleá and phaeopigments. A third filtration took place eftsoon for the determination of suspended matter: About 250mL of seawater were filtered through GF/F filters, which were previously dried and pre-balanced. The filters were conserved at room temperature. The liquid obtained from this filtration was also conserved for Alkalinity measure. The method used in the vessel Belgica was based in electro-titration, according to the Gran method. The measures took place after the samples had reached the room temperature. The experimental procedure for obtaining the results for Dissolved Oxygen and Alkalinity took place on board. On the contrary, experiments for nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silica), pigments and suspended matter will be done in the laboratory. .

Instrumentatie en Data-acquisitie
11.1. Gebruikte instrumentatie. 11.1.1. Navigatie apparatuur.
Thales Navigation Aquarius-02 LRK DGPS (longe range kinematic differential GPS).
•
ANSHUTZ STD20 gyro kompas.
•
RAYTHEON DSN450 Doppler log en bathymetrische diepte.
•
ATLAS DESO 22 wetenschappelijke dieptemeter.
