COURSE OUTLINE Subject : Qualitative Research Methodology Code : ENG 4301 SKS : 3 (three) Semester : 1 (Odd) Lecturers : Dr. Agustinus Semiun, M.A. SUBJECT DESCRIPTION Qualitative Research Methodology subject is to prepare the students with competence to do research by applying qualitative approach. Qualitative research focuses of in depth study by principally observing and interacting with the people and trying to understand about their interpretation about the world where they live. The researcher basically go to the field and live together with them for a certain length of time (as long as the data has been completely obtained). For such purpose, this subject present a number of relevan topics as presented under point Topics through the semester LEARNING OUTCOME When you have completed this lecture, you will be able to (1) explain Basic concepts of Qualitative Research (2) differentiate the types of qualitative research (3) formulate problems and hypothesis in qualitative research (4) design and write the literature review for qualitative research (5) design a field qualitative research (6) analyze qualitative data (7) write a model of qualitative research proposal TOPICS THROUGH THE SEMESTER 1. TEST : MID TERM TEST The following are the examples of the so called characteristics dealing with the principles of qualitative research methodology. Give your brief but correct comments on them! (1) It applies inductive process rather than deductive one. (2) Researchers are instruments (3) The aim is not for generalizability but transferability (4) Research proposal is not permanent (closed) (5) It applies in-depth interview (6) The research area is the site (situs) rather than location (lokasi) (7) It needs detailed description in the data analysis (8) Systematic non probabilistic sampling is often used (9) It uses informants rather than respondents (10) For certain qualitative research, focus group discussion (FGD) is important. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Quantitative research methodology is a required subject for S2 students including students of English Language Education Program. Differently from other social disciplines, quantitative research method in English language education focuses on research on English Language Teaching and Learning. However, general concepts of quantitative research method are also put as very important knowledge for the students’ prior knowledge before they come to learn quantitative research method in English Language Teaching and Learning. This subject therefore covers: (1) basic concept of quantitative research method in relevance with its difference from qualitative one, and its relationship with statistics, (2) areas of research methods in Language Teaching and Language Learning including social context, applied linguistics, and second language learning, (3) quantitative research design in Language Teaching and Language Learning, and (4) constructing quantitative research proposal for S2 thesis writing. The students are expected to be capable in doing individual research applying quantitative design. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The subject is to prepare the students with: (1) Basic concept of quantitative research method (2) Knowledge about major points of differences between qualitative and quantitative research method. (3) Knowledge about relationships of quantitative research and statistics. (4) Knowledge about areas of methods in language teaching and language learning (5) Knowledge dealing with ability in constructing a quantitative research design in language teaching and language learning (6) Knowledge dealing with descriptive and inferential analysis (7) Knowledge dealing with ability to draw conclusion (8) Knowledge dealing with ability in constructing quantitative research proposal. TEACHING ACTIVITIES: (1) Presentation (power points and LCD) (2) Discussion (3) Practice (4) Students’ classroom assignment presentation (5) Proposal Writing EVALUATION COMPONENTS: Students are evaluated based on: (1) Participation (10 %) (2) Semester assignment presentation (20 %) 79
(3) Practicum assignment (20 %) (4) Proposal assignment (50 %) ACTIVITIES REQUIRED (for Soft Skills): (1) Classroom meeting attendance (2) Active participation in the classroom discussion (3) Writing a summary of an article report and critics in terms of: variables, research questions, hypothesis, theory, data collection, data analysis, conclusion drawn (in groups of 2). (4) Classroom presentation of the article report scheduled for meeting 8. (5) Accomplishing a practicum assignment on data analysis applying SPSS facilities scheduled for meeting 13. (6) Accomplishing an individual research proposal (15 to 20 pages) for final assignment, due date: the end of semester.
