SÁRKÁNY Győző grafikusművész a HUNGART elnöke
HUNGART Society for the Collective Rights Management of Visual Artists is a not-for-profit organisation that was set up in 1997 for the collective management of the rights of artists active in the field of fine and applied art and photography. Its funds come partly from the fees it charges for its services and partly from royalties which, in turn, it uses to support contemporary Hungarian visual artists. Under its support schemes it has, over the past 13 years, provided individual scholarships to 6-8 artists every year. This series presents five of the some eighty scholarship awardees. However, this is only the beginning, as we plan to publish five books every year, to coincide with the awards presentation. We seek to create a series of short monographs on the oeuvre of contemporary artists. The analytical studies by renowned specialists and art historians intimately acquainted with the work of the artists hope to lend an authoritative edge to the series. We trust this endeavour will satisfy a long-felt want and contribute to presenting and preserving the intellectual and artistic values of contemporary Hungarian art. A szakmai fotográfia kizárólag a technikai tökéletességre törekszik2, a klasszikus műfajok – portré, tájkép, csendélet – fotográfiai eszközökkel való megragadását vagy épp a társadalmi érzékenységű szociofotót jelen9

Ám a Dokumentum címmel szervezett fotókiállítás- és (a rendszeresen hozzá kapcsolódó) szimpózium-sorozat nyomán évről évre a kortárs fotó változásának mibenlétét próbálta megfogalmazni, s az egyes állásfoglalásai a fotós szakmában igen heves vitát váltottak ki, ezért is ezt az eseménysorozatot ma már Dokumentum-vitaként emlegetik.
Illés Barna munkássága alapjaiban fotográfiai képzettségére épül, felhasználja mindazt a tudást, amit e szakmában elsajátítható – sőt mi több, mindezt tanítja is –, ugyanakkor tovább is lép, mintegy a wölfflini szubjektív önkény szellemében. Illés Barna ahhoz a nemzedékhez tartozik, amely a 60-as, 70-es évek konceptuális fotói után a fotó médiumát mintegy képzőművészeti alkotásként alkalmazza. Ez a szemlélet-

From now on everything will be different or just the same The work of Barna Illés
Radar – a positioning experiment “Pictures never merely react to the object to be visualized, but always also contain the story of their creation.” Horst Bredekamp’s thoughts are particularly apt when talking of the work of Barna Illés, a photographic artist who has gone through a number of changes in style and different artistic periods. And yet, through each of the various types of work he produces, an overriding tendency somehow emerges which appears to define Illés’s artistic approach, and hence his creative efforts as an artist. Besides the inspiration of photographers both famous and not so famous, perhaps the greatest impact on Illés’s intellectual attitude has been that of Paul Virilio and Jean Baudrillard. His work is at once characterized by hope and scepticism, humour, and the game of illusion along the thin line between reality and the appearance of reality. In his frequent landscape photographs he seeks, by using a distinctive framing technique, models that imitate nature or objects that actually transform nature, to avoid a perspective that simply reproduces reality. Although Illés is a photographic artist by profession, he is also “in the game” of contemporary fine art as well is, and his work occupies the overlapping ground between the two fields. But what is the real nature of this duality? And why does one not follow on from the other? As the catalogue of the photographic exhibition held in the Műcsarnok in 2001 explains: “On one side stand experts who believe in photographic education, and on the other side users of photographs intended as fine art. Is photography actually fine art at all, or should it be content with the rank of applied arts? Is there a common ground between professional photography and photography as fine art, or is photography simply one tool (technique or medium) with its place in the great reservoir of visual arts?”1 29

These discussions have centred partly on analyzing the evolving position of the creative artist, and partly on attempts to interpret photography through the lens of social, cultural and technological change. course, put this way the distinction appears extremely loose, perhaps strained and even superfluous, and yet it is still there. And as we may see, this is true not only of photography and fine arts.8 The work of Barna Illés is fundamentally based on his photographic training, and he uses – and what is more, teaches – all the knowledge that can be acquired in this profession. At the same time, he goes further, as it were in the spirit of Wölfflini’s subjective arbitrariness.
