Události, které vejdou do dějin naší univerzity v poslední době jsme prošli dvěma důležitými historickými mezníky Dámy a pánové, pokud se někdy budou psát dějiny naší univerzity, určitě v nich nebudou chybět dvě významné události z těchto dní: slavnostní inaugurace Fakulty aplikované informatiky a jejího prvního děkana prof. Vladimíra Vaška a symbolický poklep na základní kámen k výstavbě Univerzitního centra. Naší čtvrté fakultě i panu děkanovi přeji hodně úspěchů.
Přeji Vám krásné léto, studentům pěkné prázdniny a zaměstnancům příjemnou dovolenou. prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc. rektor
The events of the last days will go into the history of our university two significant historical events in recent days
L
Ladies and Gentlemen, If anybody ever writes the history of our University, they will definitely include two significant events from these days: the festive inauguration of the Faculty of Applied Informatics and its first Dean, Prof. Vladimír Vašek, and the symbolic tapping on the cornerstone of the University Centre. I wish our fourth faculty and its Dean a lot of success. I believe that the faculty will soon become an internationally acclaimed facility, because it has all the necessary prerequisites. Another landmark in the history of TBU is without a doubt the launch of the construction of the University Centre. If everything goes according to plans, a modern university library, which we have needed for a long time, will begin to serve University students and employees next year. The University is successfully growing and opening up to the world. After the summer holiday we will start teaching in a new facility in former barracks in Uherské Hradiště, where we will teach three of our study programmes. Apart from that, we are going to establish a Centre for Language Preparation in the university centre in Uherské Hradiště, where about one hundred foreign students will study Czech language before they continue in their studies (in Czech) either at our or other Czech university. A larger number of foreigners should also start studying in our new study programmes taught in English. Right at the beginning of the academic year another fundamental event is ahead of us, namely conferring of the first honorary

doctorate, which will be received on the premises of the Zlín University by the President of European Commission, Mr. José Manuel Barosso. I wish you a lovely summer with nice and pleasant holidays for all. Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc. Rector

Ing. Jaroslav Balátě, DrSc. a prof. Ing.
Byla zřízena k 1. 1. 2006 a tvoří ji pět ústavů: Ústav matematiky, Ústav řízení procesů, Ústav automatizace a řídicí techniky, Ústav elektrotechniky a měření a Ústav aplikované informatiky.

Ing. Petra Sáhy, CSc., ministryně školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy JUDr. Petry Buzkové, a mnoha vzácných hostů.

napomohou jejímu zapojení do evropského výzkumného a vzdělávacího prostoru. A nám všem, aby stavba přispěla k vytvoření zázemí moderní sebevědomé univerzity, která si zajistí uznání a respekt nejen v kontextu republikovém, ale i mezinárodním, a bude výrazným způsobem přispívat k rozvoji vzdělanostní společnosti 21. století,“ dodala ministryně. Univerzitní centrum bude součástí unikátního komplexu multifunkčních budov s názvem Kongresové a univerzitní centrum, na jehož výstavbě univerzita spolupracuje s Magistrátem města Zlína. Zhotovitelem stavby bude sdružení firem Metrostav, a. s., divize 3, Praha a VW WACHAL, a. s., Kroměříž.

Inauguration of the Faculty of Applied Informatics and its Dean The festive inauguration of the Faculty of Applied Informatics (FAI) of Tomas Bata University in Zlín and its first Dean, Prof. Vladimír Vašek, CSc., took place on 23rd May 2006 in the University building in Jižní Svahy in Zlín. Prof. Vašek was festively inducted into his office, took a dean’s oath, and received the academic symbols of his position and the faculty itself – the insignia. The academic ceremony was attended by the University representatives led by the Rector, Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., who delivered the festive speech. “In fact our new faculty needs nothing more – it has its Dean, beautiful spaces, good technical equipment, and – most importantly – numerous personalities in its staff, who ensure the high international level of the subjects taught at the faculty. It
also has enough students – 1,225,” the Rector said. He also briefly indicated the plans for the development of FAI: to create a faculty with international reputation by accepting students into doctoral programmes taught in English (one programme has already been accredited, another one is being prepared), and to create – within three years – 70 highly-qualified places in applied research. As a symbol of the academic post and related powers a chain was given to the four newly appointed Vice-Deans of the Faculty of Applied Informatics: RNDr. Jan Ostravský, CSc., Ing. Tomáš Sysala, Ph.D., Mgr. Milan Adámek, Ph.D. and Doc. Ing. Ivan Zelinka, CSc. Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Balátě, DrSc., and Prof. Ing. Antonín Víteček, Dr. Hon., received
memorial medals for their contribution to the establishment of FAI as the fourth faculty of the Zlín University. The Faculty of Applied Informatics provides university education on all levels (Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral) in fields oriented towards application of all types of information technologies. The faculty focuses primarily on applications of information technologies in enterprise and production sphere, on security systems, and development and research. It was established on 1st January 2006 and consists of 5 departments: the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Process Control, the Department of Automation and Control Engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Measuring, and the Department of Applied Informatics.
The biggest construction since the Bata era started the University Centre should welcome its residents and visitors already next year

The students of the Zlín University can look forward to the completion of the University Centre by the end of the year 2007. On 30th May 2006, the cornerstone was symbolically tapped on in the presence of the University Rector, Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., the Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, JUDr. Petra Buzková, and many distinguished guests. “The whole construction with planned budget of 453 million CZK, out of which 440 million CZK. is provided by the government through our Ministry, should be opened to its residents and visitors by next year. It is a demanding task. Yet, I am convinced it will be fulfilled. The unrelenting efforts of the University staff responsible for the preparation of the construction make me sure of that,” Minister Buzková said in her speech. “Let me wish those who will participate in the construction project a lot of luck and energy. I wish Tomas Bata University a new building that will give it spaces which will help it enter the European research and educational community. And I wish all of us that the building contributes to establishing a good background for a modern, confident university, which will win recognition and respect not only within the country but internationally, and will significantly contribute to the development of

the education-oriented society of the 21st century,” the Minister added. The University Centre will be a part of a unique multi-functional complex named the Congress and University Centre, which is being built by the University in cooperation with the Zlín Municipality. The project was elaborated by a world-renowned architect and a native of Zlín, Prof. Eva Jiřičná. The cost of investment for the construction of the whole complex will be almost 1 milliard CZK. Thus, it will be the most significant investment in the town since the Bata’s era. The construction will be carried out by a syndicate of companies Metrostav, a.s., 3rd division, Prague, and VW WACHAL, a.s., Kroměříž. The work on the University part of the complex has already started: at present, the by-passes of engineering networks are being installed, including the connection to hot water distribution, which should be finished by the beginning of July. Apart from that, the library equipment is just being projected, including the computer equipment. The expected date of completion of the construction of the whole University building is 15 months. The main part of the new TBU building in the town centre will be a five-storey multifunctional university library, which will
provide its users with services on the basis of the latest information and communication technologies. The interior of the library is optimally designed for both technical and operational facilities and for the study spaces with a huge capacity. Up to 80% of the total study places will be in quiet study areas, equipped with computers. The library will be open to professionals as well as general public.

Cesta k úspěchu: vidět svět jako své hřiště rozhovor s profesorem Milanem Zeleným, světově uznávaným ekonomem
P
Vidíte v ní i možnost posílení zlínského regionu?
Pak mě donutí, abych přišel třeba v neděli ráno a dopověděl jim to. Zpracovala Mgr. Jana Brázdilová, ptala se Ing. Pavla Staňková, Ph.D. červen 2006
what’s of interest
The way to success in a global society? See the world as your playground. an interview with Prof. Milan Zelený, a world-recognized economist Professor, how do you feel as the first in the TOP 10 of Czech economists? Of course I’m pleased with the first place, but, frankly, I don’t think I would stack up so well in a list of the best world economists. Having lived in America for 35 year, I’ve learnt to evaluate my qualities against a very rich sample – from the USA, China, Japan, etc., because I realized that the world is a huge place. So the next challenge for you is the list of the top world economists? You know, at certain age, nature mercifully reduces the level of your ambition. You are ambitious when you are 20 or 30, but after 40 years of age the ambitions are not so strong. I don’t need to be the best economist in the world; I want to be a useful, happy and good person – that’s enough for me. Let’s return to our university environment. You are an advocate of so called entrepreneurial university. How do you think it could assert itself in the Czech Republic? Do you think it could also strengthen the Zlín region? Of course, Bata used to have something similar. It actually wasn’t a university, but the Bata School of Work, which was a sort of an attempt to teach people how to conduct business and cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit, and this took place at a school which was a workplace at the same time. So there are certain traditions here. I think that an entrepreneurial university would be really beneficial for Zlín, because the physical environment here is rather isolated and we cannot hope that the local region would become the world crossroads any time soon. But you could make use of the fact that people who want to do business and have the entrepreneurial spirit are also interested in education. These two things must be combined. Today it’s easy to communicate through the internet so a company founded here can operate globally. I’m convinced that an entrepreneurial university which would enable students to found companies (with the support of the business sphere and the local authorities) would bring into the Czech Republic business ideas from all over the world. TBU could step out in this direction, if there is enough courage. It would not necessarily have to give up the traditional functions of a university, i.e. educational, scientific and research activities; just a part of it should go towards business. In your lecture you mentioned Tomas Bata several times and your book „The Way to Success“ is widely known. What are, in your opinion, the ways to succeed in Czech business and in what way should the Czech businessmen take inspiration from the Bata’s management system? Above all, it is necessary to come to grips with the world. In a global society, you cannot achieve success by comparing your abilities against each other. It is necessary to expose yourself to the global press: to attend conferences abroad, publish in international journals, etc., not to be afraid to enter this realm. It is not well rooted in our culture; the people who manage to do that are rather exceptions. But I think this is the main thing that Bata managed to do. He did work here, in the Zlín valley,
june 2006
but he was always somewhere out in the world, just as his brother did later on. They saw the world as their „playground“. And that is the way to the success in a global society. Not to fear a grappling with the world and to concentrate on what we can contribute to the world. You do confront yourself with the world, you teach in the Czech Republic, in America, China, Thai-wan. In what way are the students in these countries different? Generally speaking I would say that students in America, China and Thai-wan have bigger respect for education and are more aware of its pragmatic value. They really pursue education, not in order to gain a degree but to really know something. They are very serious about education and have correspondingly high demands on the teachers. Czech students do not have this quality inherent (which does not mean there are no exceptions). Most students see education as social tradition, form is more important for them than the principle. They do not chase ideas and their own studies, but rather try to meet the requirements of the school. I will explain it with a help of an example: when I announce that some classes won’t take place or that I will not manage to speak about some topics, Czech students give me applause and disband cheerfully. In America they are bewildered for a while, but in the end leave, too. In China, they tell me “Professor, this won’t do. You promised to explain this stuff to us and you didn’t do it.” And then they make me come say on Sunday morning and complete the lecture. You can yourself make a conclusion as for who will be better able to compete in the world with their attitudes. That doesn’t sound very flattering. Is there anything that can be done about that? It’s necessary not to fear the reform of the school system and to introduce a system which would not reward simply the formal fulfilment of one’s duties, but which would encourage the thirst for knowledge. The most important thing is for the students to begin acting as a customer. Naturally, European and Czech students don’t like this idea because that means they would have to pay school fees. When somebody gives you something free of charge, it has no value. Czech students don’t require quality and performance, because they do not behave as customers. That doesn’t necessarily mean that students would have to pay fees at all schools. The point is to have a whole range of schools to choose from. In America there are state schools which are basically free-of-charge but there are also extremely expensive schools. In other words, I must be able to afford to pay for top quality; if I can’t afford it I must accept the average. That works in other spheres too, for example in health care. But when everything is free of charge, lowest common denominator overrules. Then, from the point of view of competitive strength and success in the labour market, students get only the provincial, local position, and again they cannot get out into the world. Thank you for the interview Text by Mgr. Jana Brázdilová, interview by Ing. Pavla Staňková, Ph.D.

Na FT vyrobili boty z doby Velké Moravy Ojedinělý projekt ukončili začátkem května na Ústavu inženýrství a hygieny obouvání Fakulty technologické. Ing.
Samotná výroba trvala přes tři měsíce a předcházelo jí vyřešení několika střihových a technologických záhad.
Letos bylo toto téma obohaceno o diskusi nad budoucím vývojem samotné IT profese, a to z pohledu akademické sféry, renomované výzkumné agentury Gartner, a lídrů světového i českého IT trhu. Zájem o konferenci každým rokem stoupá, letos ji navštívilo celkem 533 registrovaných zájemců. Prestiž konference potvrzuje i zájem z řad partnerských organizací. Třetí ročník podpořilo celkem 17 společností a exkluzivní mediální partner – vydavatelství Computer Press. Generálními partnery byli Microsoft ČR, Siemens Business Services ČR a Hewlett-Packard ČR. Účastníci konference ocenili možnost zhlédnout prezentace většiny předních
V
Výuku v Laboratoři bude každý akademický rok absolvovat více než 400 studentů magisterského studijního programu Fakulty managementu a ekonomiky.

Models of Great-Moravian Shoes made at FT A unique project was finished at the Department of Footwear Engineering and Hygiene, Faculty of Technology, at the beginning of May. Ing. Václav Gřešák created a splendid collection of replicas of historical footwear from the period of Great Moravia. In the shoemaking laboratories, he created six pairs of replicas of historical footwear from the period of Great Moravian Empire for the archeological open air museum in Modrá at Velehrad. They included for example top-boots for the duke Svatopluk, shoes for Saint Ludmila, and ceremonial footwear for the bishop Method. The footwear was made according to the
information obtained from findings and excavations made in Poland, Russia and Germany. In our lands no materials about footwear were preserved. Velehrad was situated on the “Amber Road”, therefore it was connected to the centre of Byzantium and Rome, and was a significant political centre as well, so it is highly probable that the same shoe designs and materials were used at Velehrad. The production itself took over three months and it was preceded by solving a couple of design and technology related mysteries. Some models were made from one piece of hide, others had a sandal sole and all were decorated.
While the footwear was designed by teachers with rich experience in the production of historical footwear, the merit for the production of clothes in contemporary style goes to the FMC student Petra Bittnerová, who consulted complicated problems with Dr. Bravermanová from the Prague Castle (who had already cooperated with the Faculty of Technology on the exhibition “Rudolph II. and His Era”). The issues of the production of historical footwear and garments are so interesting that the staff of the Faculty of Technology are planning to publish a book or organize a conference on “Footwear and Clothes of Great Moravia” in near future.
The World of Information Systems is becoming increasingly popular the 3rd conference brought new partnership contracts as well as a unique project On 10th and 11th April, the Centre of Research into Information Systems in cooperation with the TBU Faculty of Management and Economics organized the third international conference the World of Information Systems 2006. Today, the conference ranks among the biggest and most prestigious events in enterprise informatics in the Czech Republic. As in the previous years, two key issues were discussed this year, namely the trends in the use of information systems and technologies in the organization management, and the aspects of control of production and logistic processes. The growing demands for high qualification, profile knowledge and skills in the area of enterprise informatics put on graduates from economic and managerial subjects were already discussed at the conference last year. This year, the topic was widened by the discussion of the future development in IT from the point of view of the academic community, the prominent research agency Gartner, and the leaders of both the international and the Czech IT market. The interest in the conference is growing yearly; this year it was attended by a total of 533 registered participants. The prestige of the conference is also confirmed by the interest from numerous partner organizations. The third conference was supported by 17 companies and its exclusive media partner – the publishing house Computer Press. The general partners were Microsoft CZ, Siemens Business Services CZ and Hewlett-Packard CZ. The conference participants appreciated the opportunity to see presentations of most of the leading ICT companies and to hear
the responses to their questions in panel discussions with the top managers of these companies and the representatives of ČSSI and SSSI. The conference participants also expressed their satisfaction especially with the lectures by foreign lecturers (from the USA, Denmark, France, Germany, Poland, etc.) They also liked the practical focus of the presentations. As a part of the programme of the World of Information Systems 2006, partnership contracts were signed and the Laboratory of Enterprise Economics was launched. This project, unique in the university environment, means a significant step for improving the quality of education of the future managers and economists in enterprise economics. Every academic year, over 400 students in master programmes of the Faculty of Management and Economics will attend classes in the Laboratory. They should acquire not only knowledge and skills in work with selected software products, but mainly an overview of the functioning and interconnection of enterprise processes and how demanding it is to operate them through modern IS/ITC. One of the main benefits of the Laboratory of Enterprise Informatics is obtaining competitive advantage in the labour market for FaME graduates and, naturally, also increasing the competitive strength of our facility among the faculties oriented towards educating economists and managers. Doc. Ing. Roman Bobák, Ph.D., Ing. Petr Sodomka, Ph.D.

Své semestrální práce a práce posluchačů 1. a 2. ročníku Ateliéru designu oděvů představili studenti dne 31. 5. 2006 v prostorách děkanátu FMK.

A dress mysterious as the night A dress inspired by surrealism (see the photo) was elaborated as a bachelor work by the FMC student Veronika Vašátková. “Apart from completing the three designs named Night, Awakening, and Day, she also wrote a high-quality theoretical work on the same topic. In her work, she contemplates the beginnings of surrealism, mentions its representatives and works that today still bear a strong message. Veronika tried to express her innermost feelings, ideas, dreams and visions,” the Head of the Studio of Fashion Design, MgA. Šárka Šišková, described the work of her student. The design called Night is, in her opinion, a very original dress – mysterious, sensu-
ous, and intriguing at the same time. It has many zippers which can reveal or hide the body that wears it and creates a perfect illusion of a mysterious Night, full of dreams and the untamed power of the subconscious ... Other bachelor students, e.g. Petra Bitnerová and Lenka Marková prepared garments inspired by Mozart, which is a theme FMC cooperates on with the University of Fine Arts, Bratislava. This autumn, a joint exhibition will be opened in the Nostic Palace in Prague, under the title “Spirit of Mozart”. On 31st May, works by students from the Studio of Fashion Design were exhibited in the spaces of the FMC Dean’s Office.

Tyto a podobné otázky kladli rektorovi prof. Petru Sáhovi francouzští novináři, kteří navštívili dne 17. 5. 2006 Univerzitu Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně. Novináři sdružení v asociaci Club Grande Europe byli v ČR několik dní a zajímali se o předvolební situaci v naší zemi, proto se setkali s lídry některých politických stran. Pro svou cestu mimo Prahu si zvolili Zlínský kraj, neboť chtěli blíže poznat jeho eko-
nomickou dynamiku, zejména rozvoj malých a středních podniků. Na univerzitě přijal novináře z listů Politique internationale, La Tribune, Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération, Les Echos a Inter rektor prof. Petr Sáha spolu s prof. Františkem Trnkou, bývalým děkanem Fakulty managementu a ekonomiky a znalcem Baťova díla. Tomu odpovídá i zaměření našich fakult,“ vysvětlil rektor. Dlouhodobě sloužil lidem, dával jim levnou a dobrou obuv, a to přinášelo obživu jemu a jeho spolupracovníkům,“ konstatoval prof. Trnka.
Otevření laboratoří integrované automatizace unikátní laboratoře umožňují provádět měření na dálku – přes internet Fakulta aplikované informatiky a Fakulta technologická Univerzity Tomáše Bati dne 23. května 2006 slavnostně otevřely nové moderní laboratoře integrované automatizace (LABI). Unikátní laboratoře jsou vybaveny reálnými modely přístupnými lokálně i dálkově přes internet a umožňují provádění laboratorních úloh a praktických měření při výuce oborů aplikované informatiky, integrované automatizace a inženýrství ochrany životního prostředí. „Laboratoře umožňují realizaci úloh s tepelnými, elektrickými a chemickými procesy.
Slavnostnímu otevření a předvedení laboratoří byli přítomni představitelé univerzity, zástupci firmy Siemens a dalších dodavatelských firem, hosté z českých a moravských univerzit, novináři z odborných časopisů a další.

French journalists: Is the Bata spirit alive in Zlín? What is the role of the University in the development of the Zlín region? Is the “Bata spirit” still alive in Zlín and how does it show? Do students at Czech universities pay school fees? Such were the questions that French journalists asked the Rector, Prof. Petr Sáha, when they visited Tomas Bata University in Zlín on 17th May 2006. Journalists associated in the Club Grande Europe stayed in the Czech Republic for several days and were interested in the preelection situation in our country. Therefore they met the leaders of some political parties. Travelling out of Prague they chose the Zlín region as their destination, since they wanted to learn more about its economic dynamics, especially the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.
At the University, the journalists from the newspapers Politique internationale, La Tribune, Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération, Les Echos and Inter were received by the Rector, Prof. Petr Sáha and Prof. František Trnka, the former Dean of the Faculty of Management and Economics and a specialist in Bata’s work. The Rector answered the journalists’ questions regarding the cooperation between TBU and companies, the financial resources of the University and its research activities, international relations, etc. The journalists were also interested in the cost of living for a university student in Zlín in comparison with Prague. Furthermore, they wanted to know how the University is connected to the Bata family and how it takes up the Bata tradition. “When
establishing the University, we took the structure of the Bata company for the basis – in its time it had high-level technologies, economics, advertising and information system. That corresponds with the focus of our faculties,” the Rector explained. The University also takes up the tradition of so called Bata School of Work, where the company educated its youth. The extraordinary success of Tomas Bata lay, according to Prof. František Trnka, especially in so called service to life. “For him, the satisfaction of the customer always came first, not his own. He served people in the long term, gave them cheap and good-quality footwear, and that earned livings for him and his colleagues,” said Prof. Trnka.
Opening of the laboratories of integrated automation On 23rd May 2006, the TBU Faculties of Applied Informatics and of Technology festively opened new modern laboratories of integrated automation (LABI). The unique laboratories are equipped with real models with local and remote access through the internet, and facilitate laboratory research and practical measurements in courses in applied informatics, integrated automation and environmental engineering. “The laboratories enable implementation of exercises with thermal, electrical, and chemical processes. They will be mainly used for teaching in courses in applied informatics, integrated automation and environmental engineering. They can be used by students for laboratory exercises or practical measurements, as well as the teachers in classes – for demonstrating the studied subject matter,” said Doc. Ing. František Hruška, Ph.D., who was the main author of the project for creating the laboratories. The LABI system will be also used by doctoral students for experiments and research, and students in combined form of studies. They will all become a part of a global solution and usage of the laboratories of automation and informatics in the world-wide web. A significant advantage of the new laboratories is the fact that they enable us to carry out practical exercises without the physical presence of a student or teacher at the model or at school, and that they enable a constant contact with the solved process.
O
The festive opening and presentation of the laboratories was attended by the representatives of the University, the Siemens company and other suppliers, guests from Czech and Moravian universities, specialized journalists and others. Establishing the laboratories cost 2.34 million CZK, out of which 1.701 million CZK came from the resources of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport within the project Universities Development Fund. The remaining part, i.e. 630,000 CZK, was paid by TBU. The Siemens company supplied devices worth 1.38 million CZK (discounted by 250,000 CZK).
Meeting of the TBU Board of Governors The 11th meeting of the TBU Board of Governors took place on 27th April 2006 in the University building in the Mostní Street in Zlín. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Tomas Bata Jr. and dealt mainly with the further expansion of the University. The 11th meeting of the Board of Governors approved the intention of the University management to purchase some property and land in the town centre. It june 2006
also discussed the intention to establish a 5th faculty, with the working name the Faculty of Humanities. The governors also approved the proposal to bestow the first honorary title Dr. Hon. of Tomas Bata University in Zlín to Mr. José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission. “We were delighted to hear the members of the Board lavish praise on the speed of
the development of our University while preserving the high quality of education,” said Andrea Kadlčíková, the Head of the Public Relations Department. The governors consider the fact that Prof. Petr Sáha has been recently elected the chairman of the Czech Rectors’ Conference a significant recognition of the Rector and the young regional university headed by him.
