The museum’s fame rests on the richness and diversity of its collections, which have been created and enriched over the years by explorers, adventurers, businessmen, missionaries, soldiers, administrators, ethnologists, researchers, collectors, art-lovers, curators and art dealers. These collective and individual contributions have shaped the museum’s unique character, and confirmed its position in 19th to 21st century history. This talk will retrace the history of these acquisitions from 1878 to the present day. FR : Le Musée du quai Branly s’inscrit dans le paysage des grands musées français. Today, new technologies are revolutionizing the way we use lighting. The exhibition ‘Lightopia,’ created by the Vitra Design Museum, retraces the impact artificial light has had on art, design, architecture and many other disciplines. In this talk, the curator Jolanthe Kugler will discuss the making of this exhibition, and elaborate on the concepts and ideas behind it. ‘Lightopia’ is on show at the Design Museum in Gand until 15 March 2015. Since the 1950s, the conservation and restoration treatments carried out on it have enabled researchers to study the altarpiece in detail, and new techniques of examination and analysis have uncovered completely unexpected facets of this extraordinary work of art. The current restoration project has already given us a far more accurate vision of the work as a whole, and has begun to reveal the full splendour of the van Eyck brothers’ work. Anne Grevenstein-Kruse and Livia Depuydt-Elbaum will discuss the discoveries they have made. Rogier van der Weyden - St Mary Magdalene-c.1452 : © The Trustees of the British Museum ENG: Metalpoint was a technique widely used by Flemish Renaissance artists such as Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Gerard David, whose works are admired worldwide for their precision and genius. The technique results in delicate and often very detailed drawings, and was still used in the 16th century, notably by Rembrandt, before being progressively abandoned from the late 17th century. This talk will provide an overview of metalpoint illustrated by a selection of emblematic drawings that will figure in an upcoming exhibition to be held in Washington and London. An van Camp présentera une vue globale de cette technique à travers une sélection de dessins emblématiques, œuvres centrales d’une prochaine exposition à Washington et Londres. The newest gallery, devoted to Western Furniture, took a radical approach: it is the
only gallery in the world to examine the techniques of construction and decoration comprehensively, from ancient developments such as intarsia to the most recent 3D printing. Nick Humphrey, cocurator of the gallery, will explain how it came about and explore some of its most fascinating contents. ENG: Eroticism runs through Picasso’s work, where artistic creation and sexual instinct often interconnect. From the series of drawings devoted to brothels dating from 1899 and 1900, to the sepulchral embraces of the 1970s, Picasso never stopped exploring the sexual tension between men and women, playing with the boundary between eroticism and pornography and experimenting with representations of the body. Dominique Dupuis-Labbé, organizer of the emblematic exhibition Picasso érotique, shown in Paris in 2001, will explore the subject through a selection of Picasso’s key works. FR : L’érotisme est le fil rouge de l’œuvre de Picasso, dans lequel la création artistique et la pulsion sexuelle sont confondues. De la série de dessins consacrés aux maisons closes, en 1899 et 1900, aux étreintes sépulcrales des années 1970, Picasso n’a jamais cessé de se poser la question de l’affrontement sexuel hommes/femmes et celle des limites entre l’érotisme et la pornographie qui lui permettait, en outre, de jouer avec la représentation du corps.
