Printing of this annual report was made possible by ČSOB.
The mission
of the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation
is to help people who, because of their poor state of health or social standing, find it difficult to participate in society or cannot care for themselves without other people’s assistance. Through its activities, the Foundation aims to foster spiritual values and education, defend human rights and promote generally acknowledged humanitarian values.
G o a l s
The Foundation’s primary objective is to support social and healthcare services which help people at risk of social exclusion claim their dignified place in society. In particular, the Foundation
supports civic associations and charities that provide social services for abandoned and handicapped children, the homeless, women in need, seniors, and people recovering from illness and injuries, plus organisations helping to alleviate people’s suffering during illness and providing support during the trying moments of one’s final days. The Foundation also runs its own programmes in
support of education for socially disadvantaged or handicapped children. Every year, the Foundation presents the Olga Havel Award to a person who, despite his or her disability, is engaged in helping others.
The Foundation collaborates with other NGOs in working to enhance the quality of social and healthcare services and safeguarding human rights.
The principles that guide the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation have remained unchanged since its founding
The distribution of Foundation grants grants must be distributed in an effective manner with a view to their long-term impact. It must bear in mind the “weak points” in social, healthcare, and educational policy, and should provide financial support in places nobody else is funding or which are suffering from a lack of sufficient funds.
In publicising our activities – for instance, by providing information on our aims, principles and realised objectives – we always acknowledge the people and organisations that have contributed to realising these goals, as well as those
The history of the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation
who work for the Foundation behind the scenes or as volunteers.
May all our activities, projects, campaigns, research, and collaborative efforts show the Foundation as an organisation that acknowledges the human dignity of all people, regardless of whether they are rich or poor, live freely and independently or are dependent on the help of others.
May the Foundation’s grants help
to find new
and effective solutions to difficult life situations, may they first and foremost go to programmes focussed on prevention and intervention, thus contributing to improving the future prospects of children, adults, and families. The Foundation also promotes meetings and dialogue with non-governmental non-profit organisations with similar objectives.
Our Foundation endeavours to support civil society, and to promote social changes that will help to integrate people at risk of poverty and social exclusion. We do so with deep gratitude towards Mrs Olga Havel, who intuitively promoted this philosophy in the early days of the Committee of Good Will.
The Committee of Good Will was founded on 12 April 1990 by Olga Havlová (1933– 1996), the first wife of the president of the Czech Republic, in the spirit of the Charter 77 Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted. The Committee undertook to appeal to society’s moral conscience and to call attention to shortcomings in the state’s social policy and in the work of social, healthcare, educational and other institutions. It also decided to help non-governmental non-profit organisations in their efforts at integrating handicapped, ailing, elderly and abandoned individuals – people who are discriminated against and at risk of social isolation. Since its beginnings, the Committee of Good Will has, to the best of its abilities, also offered assistance to specific individuals if they had no other organisation or facility to turn to. The Olga Havel Foundation was registered on 23 September 1992. Since that time, the organisation has used the compound name Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation. As its founder, Mrs Olga took special care to ensure that applications for social and healthcare support were properly evaluated, that grants were used for their intended purposes, that assistance was provided promptly, and that the Foundation nurtured its contacts with both donors and beneficiaries. These are the principles that the Foundation has followed to this day. In accordance with Act No. 227/1997 on foundations and endowment funds, on 14 December 1998, the Foundation was registered in the Foundation Register administered by the Municipal Court in Prague, section N, file 69.

Olga Havel Foundation
11
Dear friends and supporters and all of you
who would like to learn more about the work of the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation in 2009! I hope that, in this time of uncertainty regarding the state of society, we can brighten your day with sorely needed good news and hope. The programmes presented on these pages offer those of us for whom life is a difficult burden and task a chance for personal development. These programmes are made possible through the understanding and conscious sense of solidarity of our donors, to whom we are grateful for the trust they have placed in our activities – whose goal is the provision of financial support to non-governmental organisations and needy individuals. But this is just one aspect of our work. We understand the mission of the Committee of Good Will as stretching across the full breadth of social and political responsibility, as expressing a sense of mutuality and focussing on the needs of our disadvantaged fellow citizens. You probably know such people personally, but we would like to use this opportunity to gratefully acknowledge the great number of self-sacrificing people involved in realising often difficult-to-sustain programmes. Our good news to you is this: do not fear, things are not as bad as they might seem! There are plenty of good people and plenty of good will, filling us with the joy and strength to come together in order to overcome any obstacles and to meet the needs of our disadvantaged fellow citizens and of society at large.
Prague, February 2010
Yours, Dana Němcová

Committee of Good Will Senovážné náměstí 2 Prague 1 We would like to thank you for providing us with a grant of CZK 10,000 for the purchase of a motorized wheelchair for our daughter Blanka. It is interesting that relationships that could be called normal and human are unfortunately not too common today. For this reason, we thank you very much that your approach to the physically disabled involves an understanding for their financial limitations. We are glad that you not only understand our situation, but also that – by lending a helping hand – you are trying to ease our difficulties. 24 Feb. 2009

When I sent you my letter regarding your services, I honestly did not expect that my needs would be met. I was thus pleasantly surprised by the visit from Mr Jakeš and Jonathan (a German volunteer with the “Živá paměť” charity, supported by the Committee of Good Will). We discussed the possibility of regular visits, including Jonathan helping me at home. Several weeks later, I am glad to say that his help has been of a great benefit to me. I am enormously satisfied with Jonathan. He is polite, knows how to work with older people, and is capable of helping and spreading cheer with a kind word. I hope to meet with him in the future as well, and I wish you all the best in your praiseworthy activities in the future. Mrs V. Z., České Budějovice
is interested in two types of projects: Those that help people who wish to experience their old age in an active manner, and those that provide support for abandoned seniors or for individuals suffering from long-term illnesses. In 2009, the Foundation concluded the nationwide “Senior” collection, but it continues to use other resources to provide funding to organisations that ensure that the oldest generation can live a dignified life. In addition to the collection, the Foundation received funding for the Senior programme from inheritances and from proceeds from the Benefit Concert of Good Will. In 2009, the Foundation announced two tenders for grant applications (March, October).
→ As part of the Senior programme in 2009, we distributed a total of CZK 1,886,583 for a diverse range of projects organised by non-governmental non-profit organisations.

In order for Debbie and Scott – native speakers from the Akcent language school – to be able to communicate with the girls and boys aged 10 to 14, instruction was almost exclusively in English. Thanks to the interactive approach, the children remembered their grammar lessons and had little difficulty in increasing their level of language skills. The summer school let them know that they didn’t have to be afraid of English and that they really could converse in a foreign language!

Dear Friends, We would like to thank you very much for organising, and for inviting our children to attend, the Summer Language School at the Orlíček recreational compound in the Orlice Mountains from 2 to 15 August. We are glad that, even during this financial crisis, there are people who have not forgotten about those who have not had many chances in life to experience true happiness, and who are willing to help them forget, for at least a moment, their daily troubles. All children need a sense of security and the sense of belonging – and this is all the more visible among children growing up in institutional care. Your services reassure them that someone is thinking of them and that someone cares for them, even if it isn’t their own family. Sincerely, Antonín Nachtnebl Director, Znojmo children’s home

Public Relations in 2009
In 2009, the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation was engaged in organising an educational campaign entitled “Steps towards Integration”. Loosely translated:

let us take one or two steps towards integrating handicapped individuals into society. The campaign included a public service announcement that ran on Czech Television in October and November, several radio appearances, the publication of “How to communicate, or: My classmate has a physical handicap” and a survey, led by Monika Granja and conducted in cooperation with university students, that provided important information on how well schools are prepared to admit handicapped students. On 21 September, the survey’s findings were presented in the Czech parliament, and three universities were awarded a Committee of Good Will diploma for the best individual support, advice, and projects for helping handicapped students. The event took place under the auspices of the We would also like to thank NEWTON Media for providing press monitoring free
