There was a time when most travellers tried to avoid the dicey parts of town. But an increasing number is now seeking them out on so-called reality tours. From Rio's favelas to Mumbai's slums, the trend is gaining steam as the latest frontier in travel. The phenomenon shows no sign of waning as more travellers rethink indulgent vacations in favour of more meaningful travel experiences. It's partially a byproduct of the global economic crisis. Another, sadly, is that the ranks of the poor are growing. In Dharavi, one of Asia's largest slums, Reality Tours gives some five walking tours a day in peak season, up from two a week three years ago. Many travellers say reality tours tackle head-on the economic disparities between travellers and locals that often leave an uneasy feeling in those who travel to developing countries. What may be an enriching experience to some, however, is deeply unsettling to others. Critics argue that some tours can be exploitive, where well-fed tourists gawk at the less fortunate. But proponents claim they offer a chance for the disenfranchised to benefit from the tourist dollar through entrepreneurship. In some cases, it's the traveller who ends up giving back to the community. After Micato Safaris' clients visited Nairobi's Mukuru slum in Kenya, many were moved to sponsor a local child's education; one was so inspired by his visit that he raised enough money to build a community centre there. There's another point. The economically poor are not necessarily culturally poor, and that's one reason people are interested in them. Many have rich traditions of music and dance and strong social structures. Out of the favelas, for instance, emerges a new sound that fuses hip hop and traditional Brazilian music. It's also a chance for interaction with locals, something more travellers prize above passive sightseeing. In fact, many safari clients who stop in Mukuru say it was the highlight of their trip. http://traveler.nationalgeographic.com

A kínai nagy armada Zheng He hatszáz éve a világ legnagyobb, fából épített hajókból álló flottájával hét utat tett nyugat felé, s eljutott egészen a kelet-afrikai partokig. Zheng He Ázsia szívében, a hegyek között született, a legközelebbi kikötıtıl többheti járóföldnyire. Aligha gondolta volna róla bárki, hogy híres tengerész lesz belıle. Ráadásul nem is kínai származású volt. Közép-ázsiai muszlim családban született. A mongol kézen levı Yunnan tartomány tisztviselıjének fia Ma He néven látta meg a napvilágot. Amikor a kínai csapatok 1382-ben megdöntötték a mongolok uralmát, ı is fogságba, majd Zhu Di, Yan tartomány harcias hercegének udvarába került. A Zheng He parancsnoksága alatt álló flotta összesen 62 óriási hajót számlált. A kutatók véleménye eltér a hajók tényleges méreteit illetıen, de még a legóvatosabb becslések is arra mutatnak, hogy bizonyosan ezek voltak a valaha vízre bocsátott legnagyobb, fából készült hajók.

Bright smiles are the ultimate style accessory
Teeth whitening is the most in-demand cosmetic procedure in North America. It’s relatively inexpensive and results are quick and effective. “White teeth are very fashionable right now,” says Toronto-based dentist Dr. Mark Buzaglo, who adds that virtually all new patients he sees express that they want a brighter smile. Teeth whitening in the United States has increased 300 per cent over the last five years, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. The dizzying assortment of whitening products available in pharmacies and dentists’ offices is proof. Physically changing the colour of teeth is achieved by applying peroxide-based bleaching compounds – whether you go for the in-office treatment at your dentist’s surgery or a dentist-prescribed at-home kit. Both options have advantages and disadvantages. In-office bleaching is the most advanced whitening technique currently available. In one hour, teeth can be brightened six to eight shades on average. Typically, one treatment is enough and results can last from six months onward before fading begins. Dentists offer numerous brands of whitening treatments that all work under a similar principle: first, teeth are isolated by covering gums with a thin sheet of latex. Next, the bleaching compound is painted onto the surface of your teeth. Then, a light or laser source directed at the teeth activates the bleaching agent. This process may be repeated from two to four times, depending on the system. Sometimes an at-home whitening kit is sent home with the patient for upkeep. The compound used in in-office bleaching typically contains between 15 to 50 per cent hydrogen peroxide. Comparatively, the compound used in at-home whitening systems contains about 10 to 16 per cent hydrogen peroxide. Since at-home compounds are used over a longer period of time than in-office compounds, both systems are supposed to achieve the same result. By Chantel Guertin

3. Six-year-old TV addicts prefer blank screen to a human face Children are now so addicted to television that they would prefer to look at a blank screen than a smiling human face, a new study has found. The results, described by scientists as deeply worrying, appear to show that youngsters are distancing themselves from interaction with real people because of their constant diet of television. Researchers found that they reacted as enthusiastically to the image of a television as alcoholics do to pictures of drink. Previous studies revealed that from birth, people will choose to look at human faces in favour of an object. But the latest year-long project by academics indicates that when children were confronted with images of a friendly face and a blank TV set, they were more drawn to the screen. However, looking at TV rather than faces is a type of social impairment because you are becoming less interested in what should be more important to you. + 5 szó are, avoiding, publish, rather, select

On March 2, 1955, nine months before Parks famously refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, a skinny, 15-year-old schoolgirl was yanked by both wrists and dragged off a very similar bus. Today, Colvin is 69 years old and is a retired nurse living in New York City—her bold actions largely forgotten and long ago eclipsed by Parks. "I just dropped out of sight," she says of her move to New York in 1958. "The people in Montgomery, they didn't try to find me. I didn't look for them and they didn't look for me." In the years that followed her heroism, Colvin felt completely isolated from the Alabama activists who had once been so interested in her case. But at that time Colvin's dramatic arrest did not go unnoticed; energized by the prospect of using her case to challenge the segregation laws in court, black leaders hired an ambitious young lawyer to defend her and raised funds from the community for her trial. The 26-year-old Martin Luther King Jr. accompanied black leaders to the police commissioner to plead her case. Colvin was convicted nonetheless, and the news tore across Montgomery. There was talk of a bus boycott—African-Americans made up three fourths of the passengers and the Women's Political Council, headed by Jo Anne Robinson (a professor at the historically black Alabama State College) had long known a boycott would be their most powerful weapon. But leaders were unsure about Colvin. Some felt she was too young to be the trigger that precipitated the movement. Despite Colvin's lack of fame, historians believe she was an instrumental predecessor to Parks's actions nine months later. Before Colvin, civil-rights leaders in Montgomery had been taking measured steps. Colvin "threw the stone in the water and forced them to jump in and think about what they had to do," they explain. Fred Gray, a civil-rights activist who still practices law in Alabama says: "Claudette gave all of us moral courage. If she had not done what she did, I am not sure that we would have been able to mount the support for Mrs. Parks." www.newsweek.com

A munkamánia elmagányosodáshoz vezethet. 13.

Ship of Kings Since its discovery at Ulu Burun by a Turkish pearl diver, the Bronze Age wreck of a royal cargo ship carrying copper, tin, ivory, ceramics, amber and precious wood, has been painstakingly excavated by George F. Bass, a Bronze Age specialist and marine archeologist and his colleagues. "These wrecks are filling gaps in knowledge, telling us things we didn't know before. We're interested in them because we have no written records that fully describe the nature and extent of trade over the Mediterranean at the time." The significance of this particular wreck lies in the contents of its main cargo – hundreds of copper and tin ingots, the stuff of bronze itself. Of the one thousandplus ancient wrecks known in the Mediterranean, this wreck easily ranks as among the most important for the richness and variety of its artifacts, and for its remarkable state of preservation. The ship and its contents, says Bass, even have implications for the dating of the Odyssey, the epic poem attributed to Homer, and the Trojan War. Over the course of a decade-long excavation, Bass and his colleagues have recovered 20 to 25 tons of material, including an amphora full of glass beads, a gold chalice, an elaborate dagger, jewelry, fish-net sinkers, ostrich-egg shells and sewing needles. A trove of organic material – ships planking, rope and quantities of seeds from pomegranate, fig, olive, coriander and various grasses and weeds along with almonds and pine nuts – provides archeological detail rarely found on land, and offer clues to diet, shipbuilding techniques, manufacturing and life aboard ship. The ship went down, perhaps foundering in a storm on the rocky coast of what is now Turkey, in about 1317 B.C. The relatively precise date was courtesy of a short length of log, possibly a piece of firewood, found in the wreck. "Presumably, the log dates from about the time when the ship sailed," says Bass, and courtesy of the modern science of dendrochronology, archeologists could date the log, and hence the wreck. "Only two other wrecks of the late Bronze Age have been found in the Mediterranean," Bass says, "and this wreck off the Turkish coast is unrivaled. Every shipwreck is like a miniature Pompeii. This one went down in a day" and took with it examples of the products and raw materials from seven civilizations that flourished that time. www.whyfiles.org/036pirates

3. Recycling failures get smaller bin Households who fail to recycle enough of their refuse are being punished – by being issued with smaller rubbish bins. In the latest bid by a local authority to force families to recycle more, officials have removed hundreds of normal-sized bins after carrying out spot checks to catch offenders. It is believed that for the first time a council has taken drastic steps in its effort to meet Government targets on reducing waste. But furious residents are accusing the council of trying to shame them and demanding their old bins back. Across the country, local authorities have launched a series of waste-reduction measures, including secretly fitting bins with microchips to weigh the rubbish. If the scheme fails to raise recycling rates, the council is considering imposing fines under the Environmental Protection Act.
