From Head of School Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb. Dear Community of Learners, Here I'd like to share an interesting book that I feel relevant to "Mental Revolution" which now being discussed in many events. Book title: The 3mind Revolution. By: David Chiem and Brian Caswell Why do we need a revolution? "Battles are won by the side which, firstly, possesses the greatest competitive advantage, and secondly, makes the fewest mistakes, for every battle is won or lost before it is fought."(Sun Tzu, the Art of War) What is apocalypse? It does not mean the end of everything as to popular belief but it refers to a dramatic change in our relationship with Information. Is it so hard to imagine:
a world governed by a new brand of feudalism?
a world where education has failed the majority of children and the enormous creative potential of information age remains unrealized? Information, knowledge and wisdom A revolution of the mind, "The illiterate of 21stC will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, relearn”. We are no longer paid for knowledge. We are paid for what we can do with that knowledge at a moment's notice. We are required to apply this knowledge to solve problem and innovate. Today we are paid for our: 1. Social skills - our interpersonal skills, our communication abilities and our mindset. 2. Information control skills - our ability to control the endless information-flow and isolate the relevant factors for problem solving 3. Creativity (working on individual and group) - how we use knowledge to solve problems and innovate. The minds of champions are people who do not hesitate to express their individuality. These individuals find unique strengths within themselves and use them to advantage, even if this means going against accepted wisdom. Treat a mistake or even a catastrophe as a valuable learning experience. Q: What do Einstein, Spielberg, Branson, Steve Jobs have in common? A: Each was considered less than outstanding at school, in spite of his later achievements. Preparing for the world of tomorrow Understanding the game: 1. Social
communication skills emotional intelligence self awareness confidence a champion mindset of ability to show our own unique talents, differentiate ourselves and learn from diversity.
2. Educational If 19th/20th C is how to put many to one answer not 21st is how to solve stimulus/problem to many kinds of solution. 3. Creative We will be asked to work creatively as individuals but more commonly we will have to be creative as part of a team. In this new world, the ability to cope with change will mark the difference between success and failure. This means developing: 1. The Champion mind 2. The Learning mind 3. The Creative mind Welcome and enjoy 21st C Revolution Mental. Wassalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb. Uchu Riza

AL JABR ISLAMIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
From the Principal Assalamualaikum wr.wb. Dear respected parents and students, Alhamdulillah, now we are in the beginning of our new academic year of 2014-2015. On behalf of the school, I would like to extend to the new members of Al Jabr Islamic School a very warm welcome and a welcome back to our returning students. We hope you enjoy the journey of educating our children. Insya Allah, meaningful moments lay ahead of us. Please, accept our gratitude for attending our Parents’ Curriculum Evening. If you still have any questions with regards to the curriculum, policies and/or regulations of the school, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our door is always open for discussions. The Parents Lounge in our Pre K area is also open for those who want to have a conversation with the Parents’ Coordinator with regards to the school’s culture and the involvement of parents in the school. Our 3-way Conference on August 21st-22nd 2014 went very well. It is a short session of sharing opinions and objectives after our observation of the students during the first weeks in school. It is a facilitation tool among students, teachers and parents for defining the plan necessary for achieving the agreed upon objectives. We hope that the mutually agreed goals will prompt everyone to take action. Al Jabr always supports the learning process of its community of learners. It is not only the students, but also the parents and teachers who should invest their time and effort into further developing their knowledge and skill sets. Therefore, we invite everyone to join our Parents’ Workshops so that the appropriate support is in place at home during children’s studies. In addition, we will send two teachers to attend the MYP Workshop in Korea, October 2014, as part of their Professional Development. Shortly after their return, the information will certainly be shared among the school community. We believe that the ability to provide high quality education should represent an indispensable part of the school’s mission. Once again, welcome back to school and let’s enjoy our shared learning experience. May Allah SWT always be with us, protect us and guide us. QS 17:80 “… berikanlah kepadaku dari sisi Engkau kekuasaan yang menolong.” Wassalamualaikum wr.wb. Kartika Desy Wardani

From PYP Coordinator SHIFT HAPPENS Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb. “Shift Happens” might be the best words we can use to describe the fast changing of the world in the 21st century. Changes are happening not only in climate - or better known as global warming, but it also happens in virtual media and human lifestyles. Based on the book The World is Flat, by Thomas L. Friedman, the world is becoming more globalized, meaning barriers to communication and international commerce are smaller and we are more easily connected to the rest of the world. To cope with all these changes, students must be prepared with the skills to solve problems that don’t exist yet. However, as educators, teachers are challenged to equip students with critical thinking skills which can help them face future challenges, as they are our future leaders. Speaking about leaders, I learned something from our head of school: leadership is the management of time, people and money. That means that a leader is not about being the boss and telling people to do things, but it is about managing people and making sure they are doing their job. How do we know people are doing their job? The answer is getting involved, also known as blusukan! By doing blusukan, teachers and leaders in the classroom or school are able to make sure that the teaching and learning process is conducted accordingly. Making sure that students are using the internet wisely or simply accompanying them during play time can help them face problems that may occur as a result of technological advances. Like it or not, these changes have already happened. Reflecting this, the use and impact of media advances will also be covered in our unit of inquiry in some of the grade levels. This exhibits how the IB is concerned and sees the changes in the world in terms of technology that impacts our lifestyle. As long as we hold on to our faith and the holy Quran, Insya Allah, we will be able to face the changes with positive thinking and a better attitude towards world and the life afterwards. No matter how the world changes, the Quran has all the answer to our problems. So, are we ready to prepare the students for these changes? ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’ – Mahatma Gandhi “Telah sempurnalah kalimat Tuhanmu (Al Qur'an, sebagai kalimat yang benar dan adil. Tidak ada yang dapat merubah-rubah kalimat-kalimat-Nya dan Dia-lah yang Maha Mendengar lagi Maha Mengetahui.” (Q.S 6: 115)

Pre K : Family Relationships Contribute to the Shaping of Our Identity
Students playing the game “Put on socks and shoes” on Independence Day
Alhamdulilah, we have completed our first unit of inquiry with its central idea “Family Relationships Contribute to the Shaping of Our Identity”. As a provocation, we introduced Pre K students to the song “family finger”. Children developed their communication skills and their knowledge base about family through the presentation of family pictures. In this unit, students learned about the diversity of families and the responsibilities of family members: father, mother and children’s responsibilities. For their summative assessment, Pre K students made hand/finger puppets and sang songs to describe their family. Every student had an opportunity to develop their confidence and speak in front of the class.
As new students, they slowly started following the class rules and routines, such as circle time, reciting simple prayers (prayer before and after studying, prayer before and after eating, prayer for parents, and surah Al Fatihah). They learn to share materials with peers. They were also encouraged to be independent by taking off their shoes and placing them on the shoe rack without any help. After playing and eating, children are expected to clean up themselves. Moreover, they learn to take turns and demonstrate their responsibility when being a class leader. They were also introduced to. The celebration of the Independence Day was one of the best moments in this unit. Students participated in many games such as putting on socks and shoes, bringing a marble by using a spoon, building the blocks together and placing a flag into a bottle. They were enthusiastic about joining the activities. We hope that every student will also have an amazing experience during the upcoming unit. (Tari/Ella/08/14)
K1: People’s Relationship The K1 students were very excited to explore the 1st unit of inquiry with the central idea of people’s relationships with each other can have an impact on well-being. The returning students learned how to welcome the new students in the class. It enabled them to be aware of how to act appropriately and interact with one another as they began the K1 level. The students shared family pictures and pictures with their friends at home in front of the class. This learning strategy gave them the opportunity to recognize the relationships that they have with the people closest to them. It also stimulated their communication skills to present their personal experiences confidently.
K1 Students visited their classmates’ houses.
Another exciting learning experience that the students had was a field trip to a classmate’s house. The purpose of this trip was to develop their social skills by learning and practicing how to behave appropriately when meeting and visiting friends. We had a brainstorming session before the field trip. We discussed how to demonstrate good attitude and show respect to the host. Some provoking questions were given to stimulate creative answers from the students. Students shared their prior knowledge, for example, that we have to say salam when we go to a house and meet people. Another student shared their idea that we must play properly and tidy up after we finish playing at our friends’ house. We created an essential agreement by drawing and having a list of “dos and don’ts” when we are communicating with people. These learning activities helped the students understand that positive behavior will lead to a positive relationship with others. At the end, we hoped that the students would continue to develop positive characteristics and build healthy relationships by acting properly and being polite to others both inside and outside Al Jabr. Grade 1: Healthy Balanced Lifestyle What is the impact of healthy lifestyle? How can we maintain our body healthy? First graders have learning to apply balanced life style in this first unit. Children were starting to observe kinds of food that can support human to grow and stay strong. The central idea is “the choices people make affect their health and well-being”. We identified different food groups and created a food pyramid in our classrooms. The food pyramid could be taken as a basic parameter to discover the food groups, which will help children to apply their understanding in our healthy potluck. Students brought various foods and classified the categories. This activity challenged them further how to analyze between healthy food and unhealthy food that we used to consume daily. The students reflected on the bad effects of eating unhealthy food to our body and minds. Moreover, we improved our research skills by proving the bad effect of soda drink, pork and noodle. The students formulated hypothesis and figured out the solution. It stimulated them to be knowledgeable and also become inquirers. In order to deepen our knowledge and skills to maintain healthiness and cleanliness; we practice how to wash our hands and brush our teeth accurately. We applied ourselves to be a good role model by consuming healthy food and implemented our responsibility to keep the environment clean. (Mirna/08/14)
Grade 2: How Role Models Affects Our Lives? In the first unit, the Grade 2 students have the opportunity to develop their thinking skills regarding role models. We inquire about the central idea “choices of role models reflect the beliefs and values of individuals and society”. Some provoking questions stimulated the students to have interesting investigations to identify factors that determine people in choosing their role models based on their beliefs and values. Who is your role model? Why do you choose this figure? Is she/he an artist or an athlete? The students explored and gathered data about how and why role models are chosen, and also how those role models can change or affect people’s life. They presented their results of research data through diverse strategies, such as role play, puppet show, slide presentation and short drama. In supporting the learning process, we had a field trip to Monas in Jakarta Pusat to have an observation related to beliefs and values from Indonesian national heroes. The students learnt that different cultures might have different factors in determining a person as a hero/heroin. By visiting Monas, the students were expected to be able to identify the Indonesian values and demonstrate respects towards people’s action. One chooses a hero/heroin not because the person is famous; instead, it is about what the person does that is beneficial towards others in positive ways. Insya Allah the students will take up the value of the spirit, attitudes and profiles that the Indonesian heroes once had and implement it in their daily life. (Adi/09/14).
Grade 3: Human Health and Survival The Grade 3 students started the school year with a renewed spirit and greater enthusiasm. In the 1st unit, we inquired about the central idea of the effective interactions between human body systems that contribute to health and survival. Being healthy is an issue that everyone should be aware of. We started our exploration by finding out and collecting data about our daily meals that we usually have at home. We concluded that what we consume daily contributes to how our body systems function. We should be aware of our human body systems and also recognize what healthy foods are required for us to consume to make sure the body systems can work well. Regarding food that we consume, the students had a question. As a Moslem, we are forbidden to eat pork. Why can’t we? Why must Allah state it in the Al Quran? We were inquirers by trying to get the logical answer by having a simple experiment about meat and pork, and we connected our thoughts between scientific knowledge and Islamic values. We tried to view the answer in regards to our health. During the learning process, we discovered new terminologies when we inquired about the central idea. For example, at first, we did not know exactly what was meant by the word diet. What does a healthy diet looks like? We practiced our thinking skills by independently researching the definition in dictionaries. We also demonstrated our language skills by writing simple reports about the functions of our body systems. We still have some questions we would like to explore deeper. What everyday choice must we make to maintain a healthy body? What should we do to adapt to a healthy life style to survive? Are we responsible to ourselves? Insya Allah, what we learn will be beneficial and applicable to our lives. (Rara/08/14)

Grade 4: Respects Towards Differences In the first unit of 2014-2015, Grade 4 has learnt about similarities and differences of various belief systems around the world. The central idea that we explore is “system that defines beliefs and values offer explanations about the world around us and what it means to be human. We attempt to discover how beliefs and values can contribute to the communities’ formation and actions. We provoked the students by watching videos that showed some local traditions in Indonesia, such as Ngaben and Gunungan. They were exposed as well to the richness of world belief systems by analyzing pictures, reading books/encyclopedia and also browsing recommended websites. By having these strategies, they were able to distinguish between secular and faith based of the belief systems. Students demonstrated enthusiasm when they had their home projects to independently visit some worship places. They showed their confidence by interviewing some respective believers. They had the opportunity to improve their research skills to gain and interpret the data. Students listened attentively to the guest teacher.
Going deeper, we invited Ms Maya Kenova as our guest speaker. She is a Bulgarian who is a mualaf. She explained some factors that led her decisions to become a Moslem. She also shared her experience in overcoming challenges that she faced. Students also learnt that some spiritual traditions may have contrary to the religion that the people confess. It helped them to understand that local traditions may have an impact on the ways people experience their belief systems. By having this unit, students recognize the needs of developing the manner of showing tolerance towards differences. We demonstrate our open-mindedness by respecting people’s values that might be different from our belief. (Anik/09/14)
Grade 5: People’s Experiences Affect their Sense of Life Grade 5 began this academic year discussing the unit titled Who We Are. The central idea is “changes people experience at different stages of their lives affect their evolving sense of self”. When we tuned in, the teachers provoked students by providing pictures of famous people from babies to adults, providing a display of physical change throughout their lives. Some students had questions about what the pictures meant, while other students knew how to group the pictures into categories. To go deeper about the changes that occur in each stage, students brought their photos from being baby up to grade 5 and they identified physical, emotional, social and intellectual changes. They also used their baby photos for a guessing game. In order to explore further, we recognized significant stages in human lives by having the Ms. Olga shared about puberty matters from psychological students collect data from their families and MYP students through interviews and discussions. perspective, The results showed that everybody has had different experiences and significant moments throughout their lives, especially issues surrounding puberty. We also talked privately about puberty signs and changes in male and female students. They realized they must recognize this as part of their development. We also invited Ms. Olga, the school counselor, to talk further about puberty and the reproduction process from a psychological perspective. To gain a wider perspective, students observed factors that influence someone’s personality by watching movies, such as Forrest Gump and Jokowi movies. We also visited an orphanage and an elderly nursing center to connect those factors that affect someone’s physical, emotional, intellectual and social well-being to positive and negative sides. At the end of the unit, students were expected to achieve the learning outcomes through role play, creating posters, singing, and making videos as well as taking action to be more responsible regarding their personal and social well being. My 3-Way Conference Reflection I am Sasa, a Grade 5 student. Last month, on August 22nd, 2014, I had a 3-way conference with my mother and my teacher in the Main Hall at Al Jabr Islamic School. Before the conference, I had filled out a smart plan. The function of this plan was to use it at the conference and talk about what I want to achieve in the year ahead. I reflected that I must have fun in learning and be balanced by creating new compositions for my piano lessons at home. I also reflected that I should take an extra mathematic lesson, but since I have a full schedule, I will learn with my dad at home. I have a target to memorize Juz Amma, such as Surah Abasa and An-Naziat. Ms Elok, the Grade 5 teacher, and my mother gave me input to be a better communicator. I promised Ms. Elok, Mr. Tato, and my mother to be a better communicator and give ideas more often. I think that I have to be more caring as well. Those two aspects of the learner profile will be my target to achieve this year. I hope in the next unit, I’ll speak up and often my share ideas with my classmates and teachers. After the 3-way conference, my mother told me that in grade 5, there will be many tests with harder questions; she also said there will be the Exhibition, which functions as an assessment before moving on to become an MYP student. I must accept these challenges and the 3way conference helped me set goals that I want to achieve with support from my home and the school. (Kamarati Tsuma Angrasa/Grade 5A/09/14)

Indonesian Independence Day Indonesia declared its independence from Netherlands on August 17, 1945. The declaration was proclaimed by Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta. In Indonesia, Hari Merdeka or Independence Day is a day filled with flag ceremonies, festivities and celebrations. On August 17th, the community of Al Jabr Islamic School celebrated Indonesia’s 69th year of independence by performing a flag ceremony. Students from grade 1 to grade 11 attended the ceremony. When the flag ceremony was over, we moved to playing games, such as chess, eating crackers, sack race, bakiak race, and many more! All students seemed to enjoy the games. Most of the students from every class participated in the games. They were very enthusiastic and supportive in all activities. . There were no winners or losers but rather - active participants. The winning teams enjoyed sharing the presents they got with their classmates. Yet, some things did not work out well. For example, my classmates, Zaki, Nauval, and Ferick, who joined the bakiak race were disqualified from the competition because the shoelace of the bakiak came off.. I wish we can play more of these games in the future. Not only the students, but the whole Al Jabr community took participation in the games. Students played until lunch time. And then, it was the turn of PYP and MYP teachers, OB and Helpers, as well as the administrative staff of Al Jabr. I could see the happiness and feeling of togetherness shared by all members of the Al Jabr community. It is one of the best days I have ever had in my life. We must be grateful to Allah SWT for the independence that we have enjoyed for 69 years. The celebration of the Independence Day does not merely represent a sport day filled with fun activities. Instead, it is meant to unite us as a nation and to make us reflect on what we have done as citizens. (Oryza/Grade 8/09/14).

Mr. Tino Jumini Al Jabr has talented Visual Arts teachers. One of them is Mr. Tino Jumini. His students like calling him “Mr. Tino”. He teaches visual arts class to MYP Grade 7 and 8. He gives us a sense of what art is in order to appreciate it and learn how to draw better. For example, he teaches us how to draw a human face. He explains how to sketch the details of the human face such as the eyes, nose, mouth and other parts. Mr. Tino does not only do well in drawing, he can also make animations. He presented some of his work to the students. He also has his own website at: http://www.tinodjumini.com/. Mr. Tino’s work is published and presented through books, exhibitions, web designs, video-, and animation productions. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem (ARTeZ) Netherlands. In the early stage of his artistic development, drawing and painting caught his attention. Shortly after, however, photography and video became his primary tools of expression. In 2001, Mr. Tino graduated Cum Laude in Photography and Audiovisual Media. His art career took off as soon he received a grant for his photography project "Nice Boy" in year 2003. What you draw is what you are.” (Gabriel Enrique/Grade 8/09/14) Mr. Tino brainstorming with the students regarding their work
Cumungud ea. wass (Arie/09/14)

I Love My Personal Project Personal Project for Grade 10 was a challenging task to do. At the beginning of Grade 10, I was shocked and afraid about it. At the time, I was a new student in Al Jabr and did not know what Personal Project was. As well as my friends, I got confused with the topic of my Personal Project. It was really challenging. Yet, I tried to find the true sense of Personal Project and do it well. Personal Project is an independent research project. I was so excited to do my Personal Project. Personal Project helps students being creative and improves their skills. It was time for students to demonstrate theirs skills, abilities and develop their talents. Students should take a topic that convince their skills and challenge their inquiry. I motivated myself by stating on my mind “Keep calm and do it with sincere”. I had some ideas but I decided to pick this topic in my personal project: teaching English for the orphans. I thought it was a good topic, because it was useful for me and others, too. In this case, the orphans who really needed to learn English. I encouraged myself that I was good at teaching Basic English. I started searching orphanage foundation around my neighborhood. After that, I started to set what I had to do and made a time line for my Personal Project. For the sake of my Personal Project interest and goals, I taught English in Amanah orphanage foundation every Sunday morning. During this project, I understood the English lesson on different ways. In other words, both orphans and I learned English together. I had many questions about how to teach well and learned how to make the class attractive, interactive and fun because this was my first experience in teaching. I asked my mom, my teachers, and others who had more experiences in teaching. During my teaching learning process in Amanah orphanage, I enriched my knowledge about life from the orphans and shared with the orphans. Personal Project is really useful to build and develop my characters and also make me be an inquirer, as well as for all grade 10 students. Being an English tutor for the orphans was one of the best experiences that I got in my life. After my Personal Project had done, I was missing those moments. It stimulated me to be creative with our own skills. Then, I decided to continue and keep teaching the orphans. I made up my mind that the value of sharing must not end when the personal project ended. The orphans still need to learn English. Alhamdulillah, Ms Maya Kenova has contributed to teach English for the orphans with me. Actually, there was a deal with me, Ms Maya, and the orphans. The orphans and I had to teach Iqro for Ms Maya and Ms Maya had to teach us English. I was grateful because Ms Maya was willing to teach them, thus made the teaching and learning process better. That was an absolutely fascinating and hilarious experience for me. My words for grade 10 students, please do your Personal Project seriously and sincerely. Insya Allah, you will get Allah’s blessing and make your Personal Project be easy to complete rather than you keep complaining and not be serious about it. We will see. You will love your Personal Project like I love my personal project. (Dafi Almadani Matahir/Grade 11/09/14)
Parents Association Assalamu’alaikum warrahmatullahi wabarakatuh Tahun ajaran sekolah Al Jabr Islamic School 2014-2015 sudah dimulai. Selamat datang untuk bapak ibu/wali siswa dan selamat bergabung dengan Al Jabr Islamic School. Puji syukur kepada Allah SWT atas limpahan rahmat dan ridho-Nya. Shalawat dan salam bagi Rasulullah SAW. Atas nama pengurus Parents Association, kami mengucapkan Mohon Maaf Lahir dan Bathin. Tak lupa juga kami mengucapkan banyak terima kasih kepada seluruh komunitas Al Jabr atas dukungan dan partisipasinya selama ini. Alhamdulillah, agenda PA tahun ajaran 2013-2014 yaitu Parent’s Workshop berjalan dengan lancar. Walau mungkin masih jauh dari sempurna, namun kami senantiasa terus mengupayakan untuk selalu sejalan dengan visi-misi sekolah. Parent’s Workshop bersinergi dengan kurikulum Al Jabr Islamic School sesuai dengan IB Standard and Practice, central idea, serta target pembelajaran (learning outcomes) yang diambil dari POI (Program of Inquiry). Hal ini dirancang agar memiliki garis merah pembelajaran yang jelas antara sekolah dan kita sebagai orangtua/wali sehingga dapat lebih memahami dan menjalankan peran dalam mendukung dan berkolaborasi dengan komunitas Al Jabr Islamic School. Sejalan juga dengan IB curriculum, ada 5 essential elements yang perlu kita perhatikan untuk lebih melibatkan orang tua dalam proses pembelajaran anak-anak kita, yaitu;
Wassalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, Hilda C
