Dr. H.M. Aldewereld 0/0/0/4 4A 4B 4A 4B 5AB Dutch No prior knowledge required. This module continues topics of modules TB141I and TB111. Introduction about the development of computer- and informationsystems, including their design, use and maintenance. Next to that this course introduces algorithmic thinking, structured programming and getting insight in how computers can be used to solve problems. The following topics will be dealt with in the lectures of the course: data storage and manipulation, operating systems and computer architectures, algorithms and algorithm design, programming languages (in general, and Java in particular), programming styles (especially Object-Oriented Programming), software engineering, theory of computing, computational complexity. The practical sessions will elaborate and test the design aspects (algorithm design and programming. 1. Obtain insight in computer architectures. 2. Be able to solve problems in a structured manner. 3. Be able to make (abstract) algorithmic designs (in a universal/pseudo programming language). 4. Be able to translate algorithm to computer code (= programming) in at least 1 language, preferably Java (industry standard). 5. Obtain insight in the analysis of user requirements and be able to link these to the technical design. CIS is given in a combination of lectures and practical sessions. In the lectures time is reserved, next to the typical presentation of the course material, for interactive worksessions. In these sessions will the lecturer solve and program problem(s) in cooperation with the students to give hands-on experience with learning how to program and design algorithms. Next to that, in the weekly practical sessions, there is time to work on and ask questions about the graded assignments. We make extensive use of the book Computer Science: an Overview of J. Glenn Brookshear. Next to that it is advised to get a book covering Java (programming). This is not mandatory. A good book might be Java for Students. Competences of the student will be tested based on: 1. Practical assignments; 50% of the course grade. There will be, near weekly, assignments that will contribute to this grade (at same weight). Practical assignments are to be made individually. 2. Exam; the exam covers the other 50% of the course grade.

Dr. E. Pruyt 5/0/0/0 1 1 1 2 English This course is a prerequisite for participation in the SD project (SPM2931): at least a 5.0 is required. There are no formal prerequisites for this module. However, the course expands on the problem solving and modeling principles discussed in SPM1110, and builds on knowledge of differential equations introduced in SPM2312. Having followed and finalized SPM1110 and SPM2312 is therefore highly recommended. This module introduces the System Dynamics modeling method, with which dynamically complex problems/systems are modeled and simulated. This course expands on the problem solving and modeling principles discussed in SPM1110, and builds on knowledge of differential equations introduced in SPM2312. It applies these notions to complex real world problems, and enables, as such, the creation of continuous models of systems in which not only physical, but also social, economic, environmental and other aspects play a role. The theory is discussed according to the modeling cycle (conceptualisation, specification, validation and use of System Dynamics models). The module consists of laptop-lectures and computer practice sessions.

Permitted Materials during Tests Enrolment / Application Self Test
Following topics are explicitly dealt with in this modeling course: * the role of models, * the range of systems models, * the System Dynamics method, * conceptualization, specification, validation and the use of models, * the effect of feedback, delays, and accumulation. The place of the subject of continuous models within the SEPAM curriculum is explained here, as well as the related learning objectives and the choice of subjects. The choice of subjects for this part of the course has been dictated primarily by a number of learning objectives specific to SEPAM: * expanding the principles of systems modelling, modelling and description methods as well as recognising analogies, * acquiring an understanding of the role of (continuous) system modelling within the context of the problem solving process, * representation and analysis of systems or issues using Vensim, * developing skills for making, testing, and using continuous (System Dynamics) simulation models of varied systems, * knowledge of basic behavioural patterns of types of elementary systems relevant to SEPAM and the underlying theory, * knowing how to apply the model cycle for making (System Dynamics) models, * basic knowledge of the System Dynamics modelling field Upon completion of the course, the student: * knows the role of System Dynamics within the process of problem solving; * can apply the System Dynamics method; * can represent and analyze continuous models in Vensim and other computer programs covered; * has basic knowledge of the domain of System Dynamics. E-lectures (2 hours per week, using laptops) and computer practice (3 hours per week) During the (laptop)lectures and the (computer)practice sessions, computers and computer programs (Vensim, etc.) will be used intensively. Smartboards may be used from time to time. E-book Students need to succeed the final exam in which their theoretical knowledge, insight and modeling skills will be tested. In order to succeed, students need to be able to answer multiple choice questions, open questions, and to conceptualize, specify, validate, use, and criticize System Dynamics models. Tests may consist of three different types of questions: multiple choice questions, open questions, and computer modelling questions (on the computer). Exams will take place in the computer room. Students will work in special exam modus (no e-mail, internet or drives). None, unless explicitly accepted Given the number of students, students have to enroll on Blackboard in one of the groups for the computer lab sessions and on paper for the exams.
