PLENARY SESSION
SEMINARS
Presenter: Simon Gill
Presenter: Ildikó Pathó (City & Guilds Slovak Republic, SK) Title: Spoken English Test for Business (SETB) – one of the International Business Qualifications to offer learners the opportunity to develop skills that are both relevant and sought after at the workplace
Title: Czechs, balances, and opposite poles that attract: some thoughts on international English Abstract: In this talk I would like to consider a number of points relating to the role of English as a language for international communication in the early years of the 21st century. These will include: its position with respect to other international languages; the nature of the English that people use and need; the respective roles of spoken and written language; the relationship of accuracy and fluency; the role of culture in all this, and the implications for our teaching. Presenter: Marek Doskocz Title: Dictionary use – an innate skill? Abstract: How many times in your life as a language teacher have you been exposed to ridiculous sounding sentences resulting from mistranslation? When was the first time you thought something had to be done in this matter to prevent your own students from making fools of themselves? Or, perhaps, you feel the problem will miraculously be gone as your students gradually progress to a higher level of language proficiency by simply following a good coursebook? Well it may, but why not look for ways to speed up this process? The presentation aims to point out that monolingual dictionary use is a skill which ought to be taught in a language classroom in order to foster learner autonomy and encourage proper development of language skills. It asserts that many tutors seem unaware of the necessity to gradually expose their students to dictionaries in the classroom to enable them to make conscious choices when studying a language. It also claims that despite their training to be professional language teachers, deep-rooted assumptions will often preclude language instructors from encouraging their learners to discover all the many aspects in which dictionaries may be helpful. Numerous examples of useful classroom activities with which different level students may develop dictionary skills are given as a part of the main body of the presentation. It then goes on to argue that language examinations that allow the use of monolingual dictionaries promote good learning habits.

CITY plan
Abstract: Effective communication is the key to successful business. When they are in meetings, talking to clients on the phone or working within a multinational team, many professionals would like to feel more confident in their spoken English. The seminar aims to give an overview of the structure of the exam, the speaking skills to be improved when the focus is on assessing the language proficiency of candidates. Presenter: Helena Šrůtková (City & Guilds Praha, CZ) Title: Access Certificate in English Language Teaching – The way to upgrade your teaching and classroom skills! Abstract: An introduction to a teaching qualification designed for nonnative speakers of English language and jointly developed with the Department of Language and Literary Studies in Education at the University of Manchester. The seminar aims to give an overview of the structure, the modules, the supervised teaching practice and assessment techniques applied. Presenter: Adrienn Fritz Pásztine (City & Guilds Europe office Budapest, HU) Title: Conducting a City & Guilds Spoken ESOL exam – how interlocutors can help candidates perform better Abstract: City & Guilds Spoken ESOL exams are conducted by teachers at the approved centres. It is therefore essential that the teachers are well prepared and are familiar with the exam. The workshop aims to give all teachers a feel of what is going on in the exa mination room and how best we can help candidates perform better at the spoken exam.

Abstract: There has been a growing recognition in recent years that the distinction between grammar and vocabulary is not as black and white as it used to be made out to be. In this workshop we will look at some practical ideas for the classroom which focus on the grammar of some common vocabulary items and also on some of those areas of English which cause particular problems for learners whose native languages are from the Slavonic group; most of the examples will be taken from Czech.

Presenter: Božena Hojgrová (Oxford University Press, CZ) Title: Getting them to “Chit Chat” in English
Abstract: Have fun with sounds! Twist your mouth with tongue twister! Help your young pupils to distinguish different sounds in an easy way!
Abstract: When learning a language children are often faced with lists of words, sentences to translate and rules to learn, but there is much more to knowing a language than this. Communication is the key, the ability to listen, follow instructions, answer questions and create language to convey feelings, opinions and information. In this session we’ll look at how you can use the OUP book ‘Chit Chat’ to get your students communicating and using English for real reasons. If you don’t use Chit Chat, come along anyway, there will be lots of practical ideas!
Presenter: Steven Watt (Oxford University Press, CZ) Title: Communicative Vocabulary Techniques Abstract: Learning new vocabulary words doesn’t have to mean memorization of lists of words. In this workshop, we will look at different ways to help students build their vocabulary. Presenter: Ewa Hladíková (IONA, CZ) Title: Drama in teaching English
Abstract: Seminář je určen pro učitele angličtiny základních škol, kteří vyučují děti od 1. nebo 3. třídy. Účastníci se seznámí se základAbstract: Drama is a valuable and outstanding way of teaching English, ními principy výuky nejmenších dětí, se způsobem, jakým si developing students‘ skills and instincts, helping them to learn malé děti osvojují cizí jazyk, a s kritérii, která musí zohlednit not only a foreign language. Title: Meaningful Speaking Activities Presenter: Lenka Mandryszová (Express Publishing, CZ) Title: Generating Motivation to Learn English Abstract: Learner motivation is becoming more commonly recognized as perhaps the most important factor for successful learning. It is an unconscious, psychological process which can be affected by past experiences and environment. The workshop will deal with some intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of motivation and some specific approaches teachers can take to generate motivation.
Abstract: ‘I don’t know what to say’ is the usual way students react to speaking exercises. Properly designed activities help to avoid such situations. The talk will explain simple principles which an activity should adhere to so that students feel a strong need to express themselves – the key motivating element. These principles can be transferred onto teaching grammar as well as vocabulary. Practical examples are taken from Inside Out, a new coursebook for young adults and adults. Presenter: Petra Judová (British Council, CZ) Title: New Cambridge ESOL qualifications
Presenter: Lenka Mandryszová (Express Publishing, CZ) Title: Authenticity in Language Teaching Abstract: Classroom magazines offer engaging nonfiction content and a visually appealing format that motivate students to read in order to learn! Covering topics about modern culture, society or science and technology, classroom magazines broaden students’ horizons and provide an entertaining teaching alternative through articles, stories, and activities that are age-appropriate and relevant to the world young learners live in. The workshop will deal with some theoretical aspects of using magazines, demonstrated by practical tips from the Scholastic series.

Presenter: Ondřej Matuška (Macmillan Education, CZ) Title: Učíme malé děti anglicky (Teaching English to very young learners – Workshop in the Czech language)
Abstract: The presentation will give an overview of the basic exams offered by the British Council in the Czech Republic, with the main emphasis on the latest news from Cambridge ESOL: changes in examination formats, Computer-based PET, new IELTS sessions in Moravia, and recently introduced qualifications in professional English – ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) and ICFE (International Certificate in Financial English).

Presenter: Sylvie Doláková (Fulnek, CZ) Title: PLAYING ENGLISH – practical activities for 6–10-year-olds
Presenter: Andy Chernel (Univerzita Tomáše Bati, Zlín, CZ) Title: The river of time – an aid for tense revision and teaching perfect tenses
Abstract: The presentation is actually an introduction to the new book PLAYING ENGLISH (Infoa). The book has been designed as supporting material for teaching and playing with language and it offers about 150 various activities to be done in the classroom. They include a wide range of basic vocabulary games for acquiring and constant revising vocabulary as well as some easy grammar structures to be practiced by children – beginners.
Abstract: Key words: Tense revision, tense tuition, teaching present perfect, teaching perfect forms
Presenter: Jana Tereňová, Martina Timková (Technical University in Zvolen, SK) Title: E-learning English Language Course Abstract: Presentation of e-learning course with practical examples. Presenter: Iwona Gałązka (Studium Praktycznej Nauki Języków Obcych, Politechnika Śląska, Technical University in Gliwice, PL) Title: Double the fun with bilingual books and EUROLINGUA (ages 5 to 105) Abstract: No matter what level you teach and what language, there is always time for a crossword puzzle; and when accompanied by reading it becomes a very useful and meaningful tool in the teaching – learning process. Come and have some fun! Play with me and show it to your students. Presenter: Grażyna Studzińska-Cavour (RODNiIP WOM Rybnik, PL) Title: More home philosophy than teaching Abstract: ‘English teachers (…) have been sent on a mission (impossible!) to transfer numerous linguistic data directly to the brains of their students. The latter’s motivation to absorb, process and retrieve the data is, has always been and will always be… non-existent.’ This action-oriented talk offers a nutritious meal for the English teacher’s/learner’s brain, heart and soul. A teacher self-awareness session with the aim to get participants inspired to become more autonomous and more motivating teachers/learners than they used to be. Based on the latest development in psychology and neuropsychology, English teachers and learners will be encouraged to explore their own potential and develop their underestimated autonomy. Introducing certain elements of real life activities and self-development training proves to be an efficient and invaluable tool which stimulates the student’s motivation to learn as well as the teacher’s motivation to teach, boosts the student’s potential and improves the group’s dynamics.

The suggested model for the teaching and revision of key tense structures has developed over time specifically in an effort to address the problems Czech and Slavic peoples have with visualising and understanding these structures. The approach is designed to take account of neuro-linguistic learning practices and the variety of psycho-social knowledge acquisition approaches. Presenter: Andy Chernel, Hana Atcheson (Univerzita Tomáše Bati, Zlín, CZ) Title: English language teaching and testing at T. Baťa University in Zlín Abstract: A brief introduction of a newly established Faculty of Humanity Studies in Zlín (2007) and its Department of Modern Languages including a report on current cooperation of the Department with City&Guilds. This cooperation has been recently supported by an allocation of a grant from the Czech Ministry of Education. A new form of testing used with long distance university students will be practically demonstrated during the second part of the seminar.
