In: European Journal Of Clinical Nutrition [serial online]. 2007, roč. 61, č. 7, s. 837-845. ISSN 0954-3007. Anotace: Objective:To examine the long-term effects of the ‘Cretan Health and Nutrition Education Program’ on blood pressure.Subjects:A representative population of 176 pupils (85 from the intervention schools and 91 from the control schools).Design:Blood pressure, dietary, anthropometrical and physical activity data were obtained at baseline (academic year 1992–1993) and at follow-up examination (academic year 2001–2002).Results:The findings of the current study revealed that the increase over the 10-year period in systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was higher in the control group (CG) than in the intervention group (IG) (P=0.003 and P<0.001 respectively). Regarding dietary indices, the IG were found to have a significantly higher intake of potassium (P=0.018) and magnesium (P=0.011) compared to the CG. Furthermore, the decrease in body mass index (BMI) z-score observed in the IG was found to differentiate significantly from the increase observed in the CG (P=0.042). On the contrary, the increase in leisure time, moderate to vigorous physical activities (MVPA) observed in the IG, was found to differentiate significantly from the decrease observed in the CG (P=0.032). Intervention's effect on SBP was mediated by changes in MVPA (β=−0.20, P=0.030) and BMI (β=0.19, P=0.048). Similarly, intervention's effect on DBP was mediated by changes in MVPA (β=−0.18, P=0.048), BMI (β=0.26, P=0.007) and magnesium intake (β=−0.20, P=0.048).Conclusion:The findings of the current study are encouraging, indicating favorable changes in blood pressure, micronutrients intake, BMI and physical activity over the 10 years of follow-up and 4 years after program's cessation, thus providing some support for the effectiveness of schoolbased health education programs in successfully tackling certain chronic disease risk factors early in life.European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2007) 61, 837–845; doi:10.1038/sj.ejcn.1602584; published online 10 January 2007.
3. TRUDEAU, F. a R. SHEPHARD. Physical education, school physical activity, school sports and academic performance. International In: Journal Of Behavioral Nutrition & Physical Activity [serial online]. 2008, č. 5, s. 1-12. ISSN 1479-5868. Anotace: Background: The purpose of this paper is to review relationships of academic performance and some of its determinants to participation in school-based physical activities, including physical education (PE), free school physical activity (PA) and school sports. Methods: Linkages between academic achievement and involvement in PE, school PA and sport programmes have been examined, based on a systematic review of currently available literature, including a comprehensive search of MEDLINE (1966 to 2007), PSYCHINFO (1974 to 2007), SCHOLAR.GOOGLE.COM, and ERIC databases. Results: Quasi-experimental data indicate that allocating up to an additional hour per day of curricular time to PA programmes does not affect the academic performance of primary school students negatively, even though the time allocated to other subjects usually shows a corresponding reduction. An additional curricular emphasis on PE may result in small absolute gains in grade point average (GPA), and such findings strongly suggest a relative increase in performance per unit of academic teaching time. Further, the overwhelmingly majority of such programmes have demonstrated an improvement in some measures of physical fitness (PF). Cross-sectional observations show a positive association between academic performance and PA, but PF does not seem to show such an association. PA has positive influences on concentration, memory and classroom behaviour. Data from quasi-experimental studies find support in mechanistic experiments on cognitive function, pointing to a positive relationship between PA and intellectual performance. Conclusion: Given competent providers, PA can be added to the school curriculum by taking time from other subjects without risk of hindering student academic achievement. On the other hand, adding time to "academic" or "curricular" subjects by taking time from physical education programmes does not enhance grades in these subjects and may be detrimental to health.

4. HARDMAN K. Physical Education in Schools: a Global Perspective. In: Kinesiology [serial online]. 2008, roč. 10, č. 1, s. 5-28. ISSN 1331-1441. Anotace: This article draws from the Second Worldwide Survey of the situation of physical education (PE) in schools. The Survey was undertaken as a contribution to the UN dedicated 2005 Year of Sport and PE and in response to intergovernmental agencies' calls for regular monitoring of developments in school PE in the form of a 'reality check'. The overall purpose of the Survey was to assess the worldwide situation of school PE as well as developments since the Physical Education World Summit held in November 1999 in Berlin for which a multi-method/pluralistic approach was adopted with analysis of a range of sources comprising globally and regionally as well as on-line disseminated questionnaires, national surveys, continental regional and national PE-related projects, case studies and a comprehensive literature review. The pluralistic methods facilitated data collection on national level policies and practice-related issues in school PE, the PE curriculum, resources (human and material), the PE environment (school subject and PE teacher status; and pathway links to PE activity in out-of-school settings) and 'Best Practice' exemplars. The data generated provide an indication of patterns and trends in school PE in countries and regions across the world. The 'reality check' indicates that positive developments and policy rhetoric are juxtaposed with adverse practice shortcomings. Thus, the overall scenario is one of 'mixed messages' with evidence that national and/or regional governments have committed themselves through legislation to making provision for PE but some have been either slow or reticent in translating this into action through actual implementation and assurance of quality of delivery. Essentially, the situation especially in economically under-developed and developing regions has changed little since the 1999 Berlin Physical Education Summit. Continuing concerns embrace: insufficient curriculum time allocation, perceived inferior subject status, insufficient competent qualified and/or inadequately trained teachers (particularly in primary schools), inadequate provision of facilities and equipment and teaching materials frequently associated with under-funding, large class sizes and funding cuts and, in some countries, inadequate provision or awareness of pathway links to wider community programmes and facilities outside of schools. More generally, there is disquiet over the falling fitness standards of young people, rising levels of obesity amongst children of school age and high youth dropout rates from physical/sporting activity engagement. Whilst some improvements in inclusion (related to gender and disability) policy and practice can be identified since the Berlin Physical Education Summit, barriers to equal provision and access opportunities for all still remain. However, current intergovernmental initiatives (European Parliament's 2007 Resolution on the Role of Sport in Education and UNESCO advocacy action) place PE on the political agenda. With such inter-governmental commitments to policy principles and action advocacy, a secure and sustainable future for PE appears to be realizable.
5. JARVIS, J. a S. STARK. Partnership working and the involvement of parents in the health education of 7–11 year-olds. In: Primary Health Care Research & Development (Sage Publications, Ltd.) [serial online]. 2005, roč. 6, č. 3, s. 208-216. ISSN 1436-4236. Anotace: This article reports on findings from a one-year national evaluation of the Primary School/Primary Care Health Links (PS/PC HL) initiative, commissioned in 2003 by the National Drug Prevention Development Team, on behalf of the Department of Health (DH). The primary aim of the PS/PC HL initiative was to develop links between primary and community health care professionals and primary school children in order to increase the children's knowledge and understanding of a range of health issues. This involved developing innovative ways in which parents could engage in the health education of their children at primary school level. As part of the evaluation, a questionnaire was sent to parents (n = 69) and children (n = 464) to discover to what extent discussions about health issues, in particular substance misuse, were held at home and what messages children were receiving. In this context, substance misuse includes drugs, alcohol and tobacco. This article also examines children's attitudes towards smoking and alcohol, and considers how parental influence affects children's ideas about the acceptability of these substances. The findings indicated that whilst over 65% of parents thought that their children knew a lot about exercise and healthy eating, only 20% thought that their children were well informed about alcohol and drug misuse. Despite 80% of children in our survey reporting that they would prefer to discuss health problems with their parents, substance misuse appeared to be a topic rarely discussed at home. The findings confirm, (i) the need for family and community cohesiveness and (ii) reinforces the need for an increase in parents' knowledge and motivation in order to (iii) raise their confidence in their conversations with their children about substance misuse. Partnership working between teachers, health professionals and parents would appear to be the ideal in effectively reinforcing health messages to children; however, the authors suggest that the culture of accountability both in the teaching and health professions often hinders this process.
