Architecture and Design Catalogue 2007/2008
In the spring of 2008, 010 Publishers will have been active for a full 25 years, a fact of which we are very proud. We both studied at the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology in the 1970s, and this has clearly left its mark on 010’s publishing programme.
After our student years, dominated as they were by advocacy planning and building for the neighbourhood, architecture was rediscovered as a design discipline in the early 1980s by a new generation of architects. Spearheading this trend was Mecanoo’s competition-winning design for social housing for young people on Kruisplein in Rotterdam, built in 1985. Many other talented architects, amongst whom Wiel Arets, Willem Jan Neutelings and Ben van Berkel, would soon follow into the glare of the spotlight.
A second key development was the first major event held in 1982 by the AIR Foundation (Architecture International Rotterdam). AIR stimulated a renewed commitment to design through theoretical research and architectural discourse and by inviting four architects from abroad (Rossi, Ungers, Kleihues and Walker) to submit designs for the Kop van Zuid area of Rotterdam. In 1982 we produced all of AIR’s publications, a situation that led directly to the founding of 010 in 1983.
Another key focus for 010 is product design. From the series on form and industry in the Netherlands launched in the 1980s to the books on Droog Design at the close of the 1990s, 010 has contributed substantially to disseminating Dutch Design throughout the world.
For us it is the most natural thing to take great care over the graphic design of the books we publish. Our collaboration with many talented graphic designers has resulted in a slew of prizes, including 50 or so for the annual Best Dutch Book Design awards in the Netherlands and numerous silver and gold medals in Leipzig.
Now, after 25 years and an output that has included 100 monographs on architects and designers and 500 books on architecture, urbanism and design, 010 Publishers’ sustained focus on architectural design and practice and, increasingly, theory has carried it to the very top in these fields. The proof, surely, is in the pages of this catalogue. Hans Oldewarris & Peter de Winter
The Wrong House. The Architecture of Alfred Hitchcock
Steven Jacobs / design Piet Gerards / English / 344 pp / 16 x 24 cm / paperback / 580 bw ills / September 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 637 6 / € 29.50
In the films of Alfred Hitchcock, architecture plays an important role. Having worked as a set designer in the early 1920s, Hitchcock remained intensely concerned with the art direction of his films. In addition, the ‘master of suspense’ made some remarkable single-set films, such as Rope and Rear Window, that explicitly deal with the way the confines of the set relate to those of the architecture on screen. Spaces of confinement also turn up in the ‘Gothic plot’ of films in which the house is presented as an uncanny labyrinth and a trap. Furthermore, it became a Hitchcock hallmark to use famous monuments as the location for a climactic scene. Last but not least, Hitchcock used architectural motifs such as stairs and windows, which are closely connected to Hitchcockian narrative structures (suspense) or typical Hitchcock themes (voyeurism). Apart from dealing with these issues extensively, Steven Jacobs discusses at length a series of domestic buildings with the help of a number of reconstructed floor plans especially made for this publication. An unparalleled look at the relation between cinema and architecture by means of a comprehensive discussion of Hitchcock’s films.

The Chinese Dream. A Society under Construction
DCF, Neville Mars and Adrian Hornsby / design DCF / English / 800 pp / 20 x 25 cm / hardcover / 1800 fc ills / February 2008 / ISBN 978 90 6450 652 9 / € 49.50
Dreaming is not Chinese. By 2020 four hundred million farmers will be living in new cities. The urban middle-class will have doubled in size. The world’s biggest pool of one-child consumers will be out shopping. To accommodate these shifts the equivalent of a brand new Eurozone, or 400 mega-cities, is mushrooming in the Chinese countryside. There is barely time to sleep, let alone dream about the future. The Chinese Dream maps what urban China will probably be like in the year 2020, and investigates what alternative scenarios are feasible. It presents both the hopes and hazards China faces. Ignoring star-projects and focusing instead on the new forms of urban reality China is fast producing through countless anonymous development projects, it asks what landscape will result from the largest migration in human history? And what kind of society will emerge with such flash-urbanization? At the same time that a global energy crisis looms and China’s wealth gap is rapidly widening, we question whether China is inevitably reconstructing the American Dream. Through diagrams, facts, essays and interviews the Dynamic City Foundation (DCF) has sketched alternative routes, a conceptual leapfrog in urbanization: a new dream which transcends the current market-driven reality and lands in city forms as yet unseen.

The Domestic and the Foreign in Architecture
Sang Lee, Ruth Baumeister (eds) / design Piet Gerards / English / 376 pp / 17 x 23.5 cm / paperback / 110 fc and 110 bw ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 566 9 / € 34.50
For centuries the exchanges between the domestic and the foreign have altered and transformed architecture. Today these exchanges have become highly intensified. The Domestic and the Foreign in Architecture attempts to expand the issues in architecture beyond its traditional practice by focusing on the opportunities and limitations in architecture as a cultural and political enterprise. The central theme is how these exchanges manifest themselves in contemporary architecture in terms of its aesthetic potential and its practice, which, in turn, are impacted by broad economic, cultural and political issues. This book traces how diverse cultural encounters inevitably modify conventional categories, standards and codes of architecture, such as domestic identity, its political and economic representations and the negotiations with what is considered foreign. It presents the aspects of architecture that have become crucial, through theoretical reflections by distinguished scholars and interviews with some of the most influential architects. An interdisciplinary investigation into contemporary architecture on the global market.
Imagine a Metropolis. Rotterdam’s Creative Class 1970–2000
Patricia van Ulzen / design Rick Vermeulen / English / 240 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 60 fc and 12 bw ills / February 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 621 5 / € 29.50 Dutch edition: Dromen van een metropool / ISBN 978 90 6450 620 8 / € 29.50
The urban and cultural climate of Rotterdam changed radically between 1970 and 2000. Opinions differ about what the most important changes were, and when they occurred. Imagine a Metropolis shows that it was first and foremost a new perspective on Rotterdam that stimulated the development of the city during this period. If the Rotterdam of 1970 was still a city with an identity crisis that wanted to be small rather than large, and cosy rather than commercial, by 2000 Rotterdam had the image of the most metropolitan of all Dutch cities. Artists and other cultural practitioners – a group these days termed the ‘creative class’ – were the first to advance this metropolitan vision, thereby paving the way for the New Rotterdam that would begin to take concrete shape at the end of the 1980s. Imagine a Metropolis goes on to show that this New Rotterdam is returning to its 19th-century identity and the developments of the inter-war years and the period of post-war reconstruction. Le Corbusier. Elements of a Synthesis
Stanislaus von Moos / English / 352 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 230 ills / May 2008 / ISBN 978 90 6450 642 0 / € 28.50
Originally published in German (1968), this first comprehensive and critical survey of Le Corbusier’s life and work written after his death soon became a reference text. French, Spanish, English, Japanese and Korean editions followed – but the book has now been out of print for almost two decades. In the meantime, Le Corbusier’s archives in Paris have become available for research, which resulted in an avalanche of scholarship and produced a large number of detailed studies on topical aspects of the work. No less than three catalogues raisonnés of Le Corbusier’s entire production as an architect and artist are now available, not to mention various often serendipitous biographical studies. Von Moos’ straightforward prose, his critical take and the basic criteria by which the subject is organized and historicized remain surprisingly pertinent in the context of this recent jungle of Corbusier studies. This forthcoming edition is based on the revised 1979 version published in English by The MIT Press but offers a substantially updated body of illustrations. Each of the seven chapters will be supplemented by a critical survey of recent scholarship on the respective issues. An updated edition of this acclaimed book.

Space and Learning
Herman Hertzberger / design Piet Gerards / English / 208 pp / 21 x 27 cm / paperback / 200 fc and 125 bw ills / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 644 4 / € 29.50 Dutch edition: Ruimte en leren / ISBN 978 90 6450 645 1 / € 29.50
Schools loom large in the comprehensive body of work designed by Herman Hertzberger; more than thirty have been built to date. School-building, according to Hertzberger, is one of the few areas in architecture today where designers are still able to define and influence human conditions. In his opinion, school buildings require striking a balance between use, performance and an architecture informed by education. School buildings need re-inventing on each new occasion, particularly given current developments in education which are shifting away from the traditional approach to one more targeted at the individual. This clearly necessitates a trade-off between education, educational systems and architecture. Space and Learning brings together Hertzberger’s knowledge and ideas in a theoretical study of the spatial conditions of learning, lavishly illustrated throughout with the architect’s own work and that of others. After the bestselling Lessons for Students and Space and the Architect, the latest Hertzberger offering focuses on the designing of schools.

The Schools of Herman Hertzberger
Abram de Swaan / Vibeke Gieskes (ed.) / design Piet Gerards / Dutch-English / 160 pp / 21 x 27 cm / paperback / 150 fc and 100 bw ills / December 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 646 8 / € 29.50
Schools crops up often in Hertzberger’s prodigious oeuvre. They are his favourite buildings, he says. Hertzberger designs schools that are to function like cities. Schools and cities, he contends, can be read in many ways and are challenging, inspirational and inviting. School is where you can withdraw and adopt a position with respect to others, where you learn to take a place in society. Besides a presentation of Hertzberger’s thirty-plus built schools and a number of unbuilt ones, the sociologist Abram de Swaan addresses Hertzberger’s work in an essay. Aided by examples, he examines how school architecture and the way school buildings are organized impacts the social development of children. De Swaan pays tribute to Hertzberger as a pre-eminently ‘sociological’ architect. This book brings together Hertzberger’s schools for the first time. It is the companion piece to Space and Learning, a theoretical study on the spatial conditions for learning. This overview of all Hertzberger’s schools built and unbuilt gives a good understanding of his design practice.

Housing in Eastern Europe. From Sofia to Tallinn
Willem Kwekkeboom / design Piet Gerards / English / 304 pp / 16 x 24 cm / paperback / 100 fc ills / February 2008 / ISBN 978 90 6450 639 0 / € 29.50 Dutch edition: Wonen in Oost-Europa. Van Sofia tot Tallinn / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 638 3 / € 29.50
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovenia – all countries now belonging to the European Union – were communist dictatorships prior to the political upheaval of the early 1990s. Private contractors and developers were unknown, the word ‘mortgage’ didn’t exist and the land register was largely ineffective. Housing in Eastern Europe reports in words and images on the quest for a new arrangement of housing in these former Eastern bloc countries. The many conversations with those involved raised a welter of questions. Who are the new housing entrepreneurs? Are housing corporations a new phenomenon on the rise? Is urban renewal as hot an item as it is in the West? Is much thought being given to architecture? Is there really so much poverty in rural areas? Is there an IKEA yet? How do first-time buyers find a home? And what’s happening to the billions being poured into the region by Western Europe? Traces of history can be felt and seen in the stories in these pages. A separate chapter is devoted to the principal index numbers for each country.

Imagine –the series
Imagine is a series of publications that investigates technology and material development to provide architects and designers with ideas for their design. Using the heuristic research method and combining different disciplines and technologies, as Frei Otto and Richard Buckminster Fuller did, the team of authors holding the Chair of Design and Construction at the TU Delft develops new possibilities for materials, constructions and façades by employing alternative or new technologies, or ones that might not yet be developed but merely mentioned as ideas for the future. The series will cover topics geared toward technical developments, environmental needs and aesthetic possibilities. The team working on a particular topic will consist of researchers and developers, ranging from material and technical scientists via engineers and designers to artists. The results are documented in sketches, pictures and mock-ups with explanatory texts as well as links for future research, describing the underlying principles and technologies – to inspire the reader to imagine!
Imagine –Façades
Ulrich Knaack, Tillman Klein, Marcel Bilow / English / 128 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 100 fc ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 656 7 / € 24.50
The façade technology of the 20th century is related to the dissolution of the massive wall into a separation of structure and façade. Looking at the development of façade technology now, after 60 years of curtain wall systems, 30 years of element façade systems and ten years of experience with the integration of environmental services in double façades, the peak of optimization has been reached. By continuing the path of adding extra layers for each additional technical function, no further technical developments can be expected. Understanding façades – or better envelopes - as part of an integral building, we have to see that creating the future envelope has to be done on a ‘network’ basis: employing systems – but also methods of thinking – which provide the possibility to develop different aspects simultaneously and combine them, as required. The envelope has to be seen as a functional part of the entire building, serving parts of the demands by providing the needed technologies and qualities. In this regard, we actually have to withdraw from material and structure orientated thinking and construction – we have to develop the envelope as a hybrid system: materials, technologies and production processes have to be integrated in the summation and combined into an all-encompassing result. Imagine-Façades comprises various topics of strategic, material and technological developments. Aspects such as function integration, networking of elements, new structures and materials and lastly the addition of functions to existing structures will be investigated and explained in 100 or so concrete ideas.

Imagine –Deflateables
Ulrich Knaack, Tillman Klein, Marcel Bilow / English / 128 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 100 fc ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 657 4 / € 24.50
Pneumatic structures have been thoroughly investigated and developed during the 1960s. However, the energy crisis and aesthetic developments stopped the process of employing these structures as a mainstream construction method. Nowadays these structures are typically used in special areas of architecture and design. Imagine-Deflateables concentrates on the very limited knowledge of vacuum constructions and develops a range of aesthetic, technical and functional design possibilities. Until today, there has been a very limited number of designs developed and realized using pressurized constructions – despite the fact that this technology could lead to positive aspects: the air pressure of the earth can be used as a stabilizing and form-giving parameter, creating a specific and inspiring shape. In addition, the very nature of this technology offers varying degrees of thermal and acoustic insulation. There are of course weak points such as potential leakage and the need for high pressurization of the construction; but new material technologies and specific structural concepts will provide solutions to overcome these issues. Exploiting the possibilities of extremely light and, at the same time, energetically active constructions, deflateables are one of the promising fields of architectural and design developments. The chance to create structures that can move and react to requests such as user and climate requirements as well as formative demands, lifts this topic onto the level of a realistic and usable technology for as yet unknown design possibilities.

Superuse. Constructing new architecture by shortcutting material flows
Ed van Hinte, Jan Jongert, Césare Peeren / design Erik Wong / English / 144 pp / 13 x 21 cm / paperback with dust jacket / 120 fc ills / April 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 592 8 / € 19.50
Cable reels, window frames, washing machines, diapers, crates, carpet tiles, double glazing panels, old buses – you could recycle, discard or even burn them. The other option is to put them to good use: Superuse. This is happening everywhere, albeit on a modest scale. Architects are applying these materials in their designs. It requires special attention and new skills, but the resulting images can have quite unexpected qualities. Superuse is a practical and inspiring book about constructing new buildings with surplus materials. It was initiated by Recyclicity, a Rotterdam foundation that specifically addresses this theme. Copiously illustrated with many vivid examples from the Netherlands and elsewhere, Superuse presents ideas for tools and methods for architects and superuse scouts such as the ‘harvest map’ of everything reusable within a given distance of a building site. It also considers the subject from the ecological and methodological points of view. Superuse renders the superfluous superfluous. Stop throwing stuff away! They are now building houses out of old carpet tiles and washing machines. With nappies for a lightweight vegetation roof.
Helidrome Architecture
Alex de Voogt / design Piet Gerards / English / 160 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 60 bw ills / August 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 625 3 / € 24.50
The helidrome is a cleared space, an absence of obstacles that could hinder the landing and take-off of a helicopter. It is designed for safe contact – ranging from a green pasture to a flat roof. The construction of a helidrome is the concern of governments and engineers, passengers and pilots, owners and neighbours as well as architects. Helicopter platforms are linked to helicopter operations which connect hospitals, lighthouses, oil platforms and icebreakers. The design lifts the platform above the surrounding buildings, seeking a free approach path and a prominent place on top. Architects began integrating the helicopter platform in high-rise and private building designs. The supporting buildings allow the many particularities of the helidrome to come into view. Its prominence and variety have given the platform attention and prestige. Introduced by the imagery of helicopters in the arts, this book shows safe and remote landing sites alongside prestigious and ostentatious designs. It describes the development of the platform from a topic of engineering to a topic of architecture. A study on the architecture of helicopter platforms, which appear as an absence of architecture rather than a presence. 14
Transformatie van kantoorgebouwen. Thema’s, actoren, instrumenten en projecten
Theo van der Voordt / design Piet Gerards / Dutch / 480 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 80 fc and 200 bw ills / January 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 624 6 / € 34.50
The number one authoritative work for anyone involved in reallocating property. dax A standard work and required reading. de Architect

Dutch edition: Prototypen. Het werk van Cepezed: ProductProces-Architectuur / ISBN 978 90 6450 613 0 / € 34.50
In the past few decades, Cepezed has gained renown with transparent, sustainable and technologically progressive architecture that is remarkably usable and humane. Unaffected design, sober but stylish materialization, and careful finishing are just as characteristic of Cepezed’s oeuvre as the integration of spatial and construction-technical aspects. The design and building processes at Cepezed are also integrated: the use of prefab components and the application of industrial building methods guarantee an optimum alignment of design and realization, in which time, quality, and costs are meticulously planned and controlled. Prototypes documents a large number of key projects and deals extensively with the various aspects of product development, building process and architecture. In doing so, it offers an overview of more than thirty years’ innovative design expertise. A no-nonsense monograph on these no-nonsense architects.

Westraven in Utrecht by Cepezed Architects is a large-scale combination of existing office buildings and new construction for various sections of the Department of Public Works, situated in the Westraven area between the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal and the junction of the A2 and A12 motorways. The program covers more than 53,000 m2 and consists of office space, conference facilities, a national meeting centre, a communications centre, and the Future Center for the Department of Public Works. More than 2000 people will be employed in Westraven once it has been completed. The existing high-rise construction has been completely renovated and reorganized. An elongated four-storey building has risen around the foot of the building. Voids in the floors and façades made entirely of glass give a strong impulse to the spatial experience of the high-rise block. Voids, atriums, conservatories, and inner gardens furnish the transparent new construction with an unprecedented spatial quality. A revolutionary feature is the innovative second-skin façade of open-weave, teflon-coated glass fibre that offers all-round protection against the wind and makes it possible to work with open windows, even on the top floors.

Jan Wils. De Stijl en verder
Herman van Bergeijk / design Piet Gerards / Dutch / 256 pp / 24 x 30 cm / hardcover / 100 fc and 250 bw ills / June 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 567 6 / € 39.50
For many years Jan Wils was regarded as one of the key exponents of modern architecture. After gaining experience at Berlage’s office, Wils set up in independent practice in 1916. With his celebrated Papaverhof housing estate and myriad publishing activities Wils prepared The Hague for an architecture heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright and later known as the ‘Hague School’. Wils’ facades are balanced compositions of horizontal and vertical elements and almost entirely devoid of ornament. This ’30s architecture recently became extremely popular again and has regularly been enlisted as a building method in the state-designated Vinex urban expansion sites across the Netherlands. Wils’ career reached a peak with the construction of the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. This monumental work was recently restored to its original state. The founding father of 1930s architecture in the Netherlands. Dutch architecture today would look quite different if there had been no Jan Wils. Covering absolutely every aspect and lavishly illustrated with an exhaustive catalogue of projects and selected writings by the architect. Cobouw

Amerikaanse dromen. Frank Lloyd Wright in Nederland
Herman van Bergeijk (ed.) / Dutch / 192 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 150 bw ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 593 5 / € 29.50

The architecture of Frits van Dongen is ‘restrained and exuberant, tough and glamorous’, according to the jury who awarded him the 2006 BNA Cube for his remarkable array of cultural buildings. De Harmonie in Leeuwarden, the Pathé Cinema and Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam Zuidoost and the Philharmonie in Haarlem are already in place. The Amsterdam Conservatorium and Tagrijn pop music venue in Hilversum are next in line. Though they differ in terms of function and siting, Van Dongen has made of each one a festive affair, with behind the scenes a most efficient and user-friendly logistics structure. Besides the projects listed above, this book documents five competition designs for a museum in Venlo, a theatre in Hoorn, a cultural plaza in Hoofddorp, a concert hall in Bochum and a cinema in Liège. Fred Feddes and Allard Jolles contribute a joint essay on Van Dongen’s oeuvre. An opulently illustrated and documented overview of the work of Frits van Dongen.

Henkenshage housing, Amsterdam Buitenveldert 20

Greetings from Europe. About landscape and leisure
Niek Hazendonk, Mark Hendriks, Hans Venema / Design Johannes Niemeijer / English / 160 pp / 16 x 24 cm / hardcover / 250 fc ills / June 2008 / ISBN 978 90 6450 650 5 / € 24.50
Greetings from Europe is an account of a major international project, instigated by Dirk Sijmons, the Netherlands’ state adviser on landscape. Thirty European schools teaching landscape architecture or leisure management have been doing research by design into the relationship between the European landscape and leisure. Inspired by travel guides, the book takes the reader to each of the contributing countries. A thumbnail sketch of the country and analyses of that country’s recreation and tourism are followed by design and planning solutions for particular regions. Themed essays written by professionals alternate with and are enhanced by a map of European leisure scapes, picture postcards, poems, photographs, general tourist information and European statistics. Eminently suitable for a wide European audience of landscape architects, landscape planners, experts on leisure and tourism, researchers, policymakers and administrators. A survey at European level of the growing market of leisure and its impact on landscape.

Wim Nijenhuis, Wilfried van Winden / design Joost Grootens / Dutch / 200 pp / 24 x 30 cm / hardcover / 100 fc and 150 bw ills / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 590 4 / € 39.50
How getting an attractive country road in place can help to satisfy the desire for a breathtaking motorway in the metropolis.

W.G. Witteveen en Rotterdam
Noor Mens / design Marianne Elbers / Dutch / 224 pp / 24 x 28.5 cm / hardcover with dust jacket / 200 fc and 100 bw ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 612 3 / € 45.00

Rotterdam herzien. Dertig jaar architectuur 1977–2007
Piet Vollaard, Wijnand Galema (eds) / design Rick Vermeulen / Dutch / 336 pp / 17 x 24 cm / hardcover / 240 fc and 50 bw ills / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 615 4 / € 34.50
The Bridge, JHK Architecten, 2000–2004

Subjective Atlas of Palestine
Annelys de Vet (ed.) / design Annelys de Vet / English / 160 pp / 16.5 x 22 cm / paperback / 500 fc ills / September 2007/ ISBN 978 90 6450 648 2 / € 16.50
Sublime landscapes, tranquil urban scenes, frolicking children; who would associate these images with Palestine? All too often the Western media show the country’s gloomy side, and Palestinians as aggressors. It is this that makes identifying with them virtually impossible. If we are to relate to the Palestinians other images are needed. Dutch designer Annelys de Vet invited Palestinian artists, photographers and designers to map their country as they see it. Given their closeness to the subject, this has resulted in unconventional, very human impressions of the landscape and the architecture, the cuisine, the music and the poetry of thought and expression. These drawings, photographs and maps reveal individual life experiences, from preparing chickpeas to a manual on water pipe smoking, from historic dress to modern music. Pages containing humorous and caustic newspaper cartoons alternate with colourful cultural diaries and moving letters from prisoners. All in all, the contributions give an entirely different angle on a nation in occupied territory. In this subjective atlas it is the Palestinians themselves who show the disarming reverse side of the black-and-white image generally resorted to by the media. Daily life in Palestine mapped along unconventional lines.

Metropolitan World Atlas
Arjen van Susteren / design Joost Grootens / English / 312 pp / 16.8 x 21 cm / hardcover / 200 maps / July 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 548 5 / € 39.50
Second edition with four new covers Despite the burgeoning interest in metropolitan growth and globalization there has been no way of directly comparing metropolises – until now, that is. This atlas offers a unique survey of global trade networks and their impact on metropolitan space. It documents a total of 101 metropolises, analysing them in easy-to-read ground plans. It also includes index numbers and tables regarding such aspects as population, density, pollution, travel time, data traffic, air and water travel and the size of Central Business Districts. Its unexpected combination of ground plans and statistics makes this atlas a unique work of reference where for the first time metropolitan areas like Beijing, Lagos, London, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo can be compared with one another and in terms of their position in the global urban network. With its wealth of facts and clean, abstract design, the Metropolitan World Atlas is a must-buy. Both in terms of content and design a compelling book. Atlas Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie
Bernard Colenbrander, Michael van Gessel, Clemens Steenbergen (eds) / design Joost Grootens / Dutch / 224 pp / 24 x 34 cm / hardcover with cd-rom / 160 fc ills / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 608 6 / € 45.00
Another magnificent 010 atlas. Vinex Atlas
Jelte Boeijenga, Jeroen Mensink / design Joost Grootens / Dutch-English / 320 pp / 24 x 34 cm / hardcover / 350 fc ills / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 594 2 / € 59.50
The Vinex Atlas is a complete documentary overview of the built results of the housing programme drawn up in the government’s Fourth Report (Extra) on Physical Planning in the Netherlands. Besides taking stock of all Vinex districts, it zooms in on about fifty which are exhaustively documented and described, and provided with, among other things, an aerial photograph and an easy-to-read plan. The Vinex Atlas also includes a complete tabular overview of all 120 or so districts and area plans. Area plans are described in index numbers so that they can be compared. This allows us to establish where and in what way the entire output has been realized. An introductory essay describes the background and development of the Vinex project in both policy and practice. The Vinex Atlas gives a complete overview of the Vinex housing output, not just by addressing the districts that have been covered by the professional and national press in recent years, but also by acknowledging the range and diversity within this gigantic programme of more than 600,000 housing units. The last word in overviews for anyone with a professional or personal interest in Vinex districts.

Vinexlocatie Volgerlanden. Impressies van Nederlands landschap
Anne Bousema / design Joost Grootens / Dutch / 112 pp / 24 x 28.5 cm / hardcover / 100 fc ills / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 641 3 / € 34.50
Luuk Boelens, Tejo Spit, Bart Wissink (eds) / design Piet Gerards / Dutch / 168 pp / 14 x 21.5 cm / hardcover / 40 bw ills / October 2006 / ISBN 978 90 6450 627 7 / € 24.50
Contains a number of eminently readable essays that paint a compact picture of today’s thinking on Dutch planning. Archined.nl

Ground-up City. Play as a design tool
Liane Lefaivre, Döll / design Ben Laloua / English / 128 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 140 fc and 40 bw ills / April 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 602 4 / € 29.50
Ground-up City maps the continuing history of an urban design strategy for play in the city. Liane Lefaivre has developed a theoretical model for tackling playgrounds as an urban strategy. She steps off from a historical overview of play and the ludic in art, architecture and urban design, focusing particularly on the post-war playgrounds realized in Amsterdam as joint ventures between Aldo van Eyck, Cornelis van Eesteren and Jakoba Mulder. The architecture firm Döll explored the possibility of applying the model in two urban redevelopment areas in Rotterdam, refining it into a practical design strategy. A second layer in the book gives an inspirational and refreshing new look at play in a picture essay with a welter of reference images illustrating play as an urban phenomenon. Ground-up City places the playground high on the agenda as an urban design challenge. It also shows how specifying a generic, academic model for a particular situation can lead to a practically applicable design resource. ‘A most important work – carefully researched and scholarly, yet with huge implications for present-day design. It convinces us that playgrounds have more potential for facilitating the social integration of diverse peoples than any other designed forms.’ William Saunders, Harvard Design Magazine
Reaching Beyond the Gold. The impact of global events on urban development Tim van Vrijaldenhoven / design Joost Grootens / English / 300 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 600 fc and 100 bw ills / September 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 614 7 / € 34.50
Reaching Beyond the Gold assesses the influence of global events on urban developments. Six cities – Genoa, Barcelona, Athens, Bilbao, Shanghai and London – have been chosen as case studies. These have all recently hosted a global event or will do so in the near future. After an introduction of the characteristics and impact of global events in general the history of each city is sketched and the political and urban implications of the events are examined. Three key aspects – organization, management and city marketing – are dwelt on at length. Over forty facets including site size, visitor attendance figures, investments, populations, stakeholders, aims and methods, are then compared. A timeline, pictograms and drawings together with clear definitions of the different categories of events are used to give the best possible conditions in which to compare and analyse the events in question. Reaching Beyond the Gold analyses the successes and the failures of host cities in the past. The conclusions it draws can put an end to the structural errors still being made when organizing large-scale events. A lavishly illustrated study documenting and analysing the effect of global events on city development and giving valuable advice.

Vladimir Stissi / design Piet Gerards / Dutch / 520 pp / 17 x 24 cm / hardcover / 120 fc and 450 bw ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 574 4 / € 39.50
New and surprising insights into housing in Amsterdam during the years 1909–1942.

This annual gives an overall view of education at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. Shedding light on how theory and professional skills are conveyed to others, it also shows how a new generation of architects, urban designers and landscape architects adopts a design stance and relates it to current design briefs. To give form to the study programme, the Academy enlists the aid of top designers and researchers and organizes public exhibitions, talks and discussions. In this year’s annual Rik Herngreen introduces the semester theme, ‘Wijken voor Waterland’ (which means both ‘districts for Waterland’ and ‘giving way to Waterland’), with an essay on the largely free-ranging dynamic in the rural municipality between Amsterdam and Purmerend of that name. Aart Oxenaar presents a summary of his dissertation on P.J.H. Cuypers and the thinking on the city and Paul Shepheard, this year’s artist in residence, gives instructions on ‘How to like everything’. Other contributors to the annual include Pieter Jannink, Olv Klijn and Robert Broesi. To be published: A/S/L 2007. Architecture.ehv is a yearly publication in which the Department of Architecture, Building and Planning at Eindhoven University of Technology reports on the status quo in education. It showcases the fifty best graduation projects of the past year, not only in architecture but also featuring creative ingenuity in design systems, structural design, building technology, building performance research, urbanism and the world of building management. Each and every project demonstrates the role fulfilled by ideas in a design. Architecture sets the pace, however, and most graduation projects have Architectural Design as their main subject. This is also where the projects selected for Archiprix come from; these are chosen by a jury. Besides graduation projects, Architecture.ehv includes a number of illuminating interviews and critical reflections on education and research, this year centring on the TU Eindhoven itself. ‘Tupker Ware’, for example, examines the method of supervising at the TUE’s architecture department in the spirit of tutor Hans Tupker, and in ‘A propos Architecture.ehv’ Bernard Colenbrander holds up the TUE profile to scrutiny.

This extensive overview of Dutch Design in the twentieth century reveals that there is more to Dutch Design than Berlage, Rietveld and Droog Design.

Light Mobility
Ed van Hinte, Satish Kumar Beella (eds) / English / 216 pp / 17 x 24 cm / paperback / 200 fc ills / January 2008 / ISBN 978 90 6450 651 2 / € 29.50
The right humans feel they have to let themselves get carried around comfortably in their daily surroundings, between work, home, commercial areas and leisure facilities, has led to a considerable accumulation of people transport inefficiency. Combining means of transportation, parking, going from door to door, finding your way around are the opposite of what one hoped would have emerged from growing mobility needs. Awareness that new solutions are needed is rapidly increasing. In six chapters Light Mobility presents a broad overview of considerations in urban mobility, ranging from energy and infrastructure, via mobility systems, all the way to new vehicles for small-scale transportation and promising bicycle derivatives. The chapters are richly and colourfully illustrated with a large range of fresh case studies, scenarios and new designs for transportation systems, services and vehicles. Some of those are already available on the market, others are not. Together they represent an interesting key to the transition from the current muddy situation to a conceptually streamlined future that is less congestive and requires less energy input. An inspiring perspective on the transition towards efficiently mobile urban life.

First Read This. Systems Engineering in Practice Ed van Hinte, Michel van Tooren (eds.) / design Erik Wong / English / 224 pp / 17 x 23 cm / paperback / 200 fc ills / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 643 7 / € 34.50
Systems Engineering is not an exact science with fixed answers, nor is it a recipe for good quality. More than anything it is a medium for communication management during large-scale development projects. Their success depends on human behaviour. Creating something as complex as the Airbus 380, a tunnel between Spain and Africa, or indeed the Titanic, requires the involvement of numerous people that are intelligent, cooperative, funny and generous, but also narrow-minded, jealous, uninterested, greedy, cynical or just stupid. Thousands may work together. Many of them will never meet. First Read This provides a set of tools for keeping track of when and where you are in complex projects. It is richly illustrated with examples of projects that were successful or failed, some of them rather miserably. The emphasis is on the aerospace industry, but many other fields are included, ranging from USB stick packaging to defence plans. First Read This is no guarantee that mistakes will no longer be made, but it will help the reader to be both creative and careful. Read this book first to understand why things can go wrong and to learn how to deal with the tools needed to communicate in large-scale projects involving many people who will behave strangely at times.

Pretty Dutch. 18th Century Dutch Porcelain/18e eeuws Hollands porselein
Ank Trumpie (ed.) / design Ben Lambers / Dutch-English / 160 pp / 24 x 30 cm / hardcover / 300 fc ills / April 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 632 1 / € 38.50
In the eighteenth century, Dutch porcelain was produced at four centres in the provinces of Noord and Zuid Holland: Weesp, Loosdrecht, Amstel and The Hague. The porcelain is characterized by its craftsmanship and international style. In terms of material quality and decoration, the products were certainly equal to those made by the renowned European manufacturers. Nevertheless, these Dutch production centres were in operation for no more than a few decades. Pretty Dutch gives an account of this period. It describes the coherent social and cultural-historical background, and also displays the beauty of this under-exposed Dutch product. Texts written by specialists, supplemented with reactions to this historical material from present-day designers and artists, cast a new light on Dutch porcelain. Exhibition: Pretty Dutch, Princessehof Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, April 22nd–October 28th 2007 Pretty Dutch proves that Dutch porcelain doesn’t just belong to the past but can also provide a contemporary answer to the issue of ‘Dutch identity’.
Vrouwen in de vormgeving in Nederland 1880–1940
Marjan Groot / design Piet Gerards / Dutch / 600 pp / 17 x 24 cm / hardcover / 80 fc and 190 bw ills / April 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 521 8 / € 39.50
Exactitudes
Ari Versluis, Ellie Uyttenbroek / design 75B / English / 168 pp / 24 x 31.5 cm / hardcover with cloth cover / 86 fc series / November 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 636 9 / € 32.50
Inspired by interest in the striking dress codes of various social groups, Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek have systematically documented numerous identities. They call their series ‘Exactitudes’: a contraction of ‘exact’ and ‘attitude’. By registering their subjects in an identical framework they provide an almost scientific record of people’s attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity. The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is taken to such extremes that the artistic aspect dominates the purely documentary element. Rotterdam’s heterogeneous street scene remains a major source of inspiration for them, although for this new edition they have also visited Praia (Cabo Verde), New York and Bordeaux. This new edition of the 010 classic contains 27 extra series to surprise and amuse you about the uniformity of individuality. Carrydaddy, volunteer or babe: which label fits you? Paul Schuitema. Visual Organizer
Dick Maan / design Huug Schipper / English / 134 pp / 22 x 25 cm / hardcover / 200 fc and 90 bw ills / September 2006 / ISBN 978 90 6450 600 0 / € 34.50 Dutch edition: Paul Schuitema. Beeldend organisator / ISBN 978 90 6450 599 7 German edition: Paul Schuitema. Bildender Organisator / ISBN 978 90 6450 601 7
In the 1920s and ’30s, Paul Schuitema was one of the pioneers of New Typography and New Photography in the Netherlands, along with Piet Zwart and Gerard Kiljan. They distinguished themselves by conveying the message in a clear, concise and forceful manner. Schuitema himself referred to it as ‘Straight ahead’. In an international context, this typography and photography matched the work of El Lissitzky and Alexander Rodchenko in Russia, Karel Teige and Nadislav Sutnar in what was then Czechoslovakia, and Herbert Bayer, Joost Schmidt and Laszlo MoholyNagy in Germany. This book, the first monograph on Paul Schuitema, deals not only with his graphic work but also with his activities as a photographer, filmmaker and furniture designer. All in all, this book is as complete, lucid and down-to-earth an introduction to Schuitema’s work as he himself might have wished for. Eye An excellent introduction to over 50 years of his work. Jan van Toorn: Critical Practice Rick Poynor / design Simon Davies / English / 192 pp / 21.5 x 27 cm / hardcover / 220 fc and 50 bw ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 565 2 / € 37.50
As a practitioner and educator, Van Toorn has exerted a considerable influence over the recent course of Dutch design. His posters for the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, his long-running series of calendars for the printing firm Mart.Spruijt and his challenging exhibition designs are powerful demonstrations of design used as a means of commentary and as a tool of critique. The designer, he argues, should function as a kind of reporter. As the director of the Jan van Eyck Akademie in the 1990s, Van Toorn was able to synthesize all the strands of his thinking into a multi-levelled educational project, involving publishing and conferences, which threw down a lasting challenge to designers to think harder about design’s role in business and society. This lavishly illustrated monograph charts the influence and ideas of one of the most important Dutch graphic designers since 1960. Also available: Design’s Delight. Titus Matiyane. Cities of the World
Kristin Feireiss, Annemieke de Kler / design Joost Grootens / English / 56 pp / 28 x 18 cm / paperback / 7 fc ills / December 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 640 6 / € 19.50
Titus Matiyane is a sculptor, artist and musician who lives and works in Atteridgeville, a township near Pretoria, South Africa. He is one of many artists whose relationship to township life and the expanding urbanism of the modernist capitals of South Africa produced a particular fascination with both the growth and the transformation of these urban environments. Matiyane makes drawings of cities and landscapes. The large-size panoramic landscape drawings are emblematic of his obsession with the built environment and modern cities. The wide format of his ‘bird’s-eye’ panoramas (6, 12, 24, 46 x 1.5 m) is intended to mesmerize and compel the viewer towards Matiyane’s personal sense of technical and visionary skill. This book focuses on seven panoramas: Pietersburg, Durban and Pretoria in South Africa, London, New York-Manhattan, Hong Kong and Rotterdam-Amsterdam. Annemieke de Kler describes his background, Melinda Silverman analyses the works from an architectural and urban point of view and Stephen Hobbs reveals the artistic context of Matiyane’s work. An attractive retrospective of Titus Matiyane’s impressive wide panoramas, a unique visual spectacle.

The Great Pretender
Theo Jansen / design Johannes Niemeijer / English / 240 pp / 21 x 28 cm / hardcover with DVD / 200 fc ills / October 2007 / ISBN 978 90 6450 630 7 / € 39.50 Dutch edition: De Grote Fantast / 978 90 6450 649 9 / € 39.50
No creature on earth is better at pretending than we humans. We have a talent for creating a fantasy world, a talent so strong that we are even able to pretend that we exist. We simulate a first-person form, an ‘I’. The Great Pretender sets out to show that the ‘I’ we envision is a tool in our evolution. Its author cites Richard Dawkins’ book The Selfish Gene as a major source of inspiration. Another is the beach animal or ‘strandbeest’. Since 1990 Theo Jansen has been engaged in creating new forms of life. These forms are not made of protein but of yellow plastic tubing. Skeletons made from these tubes are able to walk. They get their energy from the wind, so they don’t have to eat. Evolving gradually over several generations, they have become increasingly adept at weathering storms and coping with the sea. Jansen’s wish is to release herds of these beach animals onto the shore to make their own way through life. By ‘redoing the Creation’, Theo Jansen hopes to become wiser in his dealings with the nature that is already there. The Great Pretender is a testimonial to the author’s experiences as God. There have been plenty of disappointments along the way. But on the few occasions that things work out, being God can make you very happy.

Unpublished 010 1983–2008. With 010 catalogue 2003–2008
Hans Oldewarris, Peter de Winter / Dutch-English / 160 pp / 17 x 24 cm / hardcover / 200 fc and bw ills / April 2008 / ISBN 978 90 6450 661 1 / € 19.50
In 2003, 010 celebrated its first 20 years with a book containing a fully annotated catalogue of all 427 publications. In 2008, to mark its first quarter century, 010 is to publish a supplement covering the past five years. Clearly, a publishing house is judged on the books it publishes, and the many projects and ideas that fail to materialize for whatever reason remain invisible. Unpublished 010 seeks to make amends by cataloguing a great many unpublished or yet-to-be-published projects. There are at least as many of these as projects that did make the grade. An early example from 1988 is Rem Koolhaas’s The Story of the Pool, with illustrations by Madelon Vriesendorp. This got no further than a magnificent cover design with a Russian Constructivist (Koolhaas!) on his way from Moscow to New York. A more recent example is a comprehensive study and analysis of Dutch architectural magazines in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a complete bibliography of all published magazines beginning with the first, Nederlandsch Bouwkunstig Magazijn, dating from 1834. In Unpublished 010, you can read why these two and the many other projects never saw the light of day. Rem Koolhaas, The Story of the Pool, illustrations by Madelon Vriesendorp, 1988
20 jaar/years 010
Hans Oldewarris, Peter de Winter / design Piet Gerards / Dutch-English / 296 pp / 17 x 24 cm / hardcover / 450 fc and bw ills / ISBN 978 90 6450 500 3 / € 24.50
In April 2003 010 Publishers had been active for twenty years. During those two decades we had published five hundred books on architecture and design. This specialization reflects the enthusiasm of 010’s founders, Hans Oldewarris and Peter de Winter, trained as an architect and an urban designer respectively at Delft University of Technology. Besides a hundred monographs by and about Dutch architects, with Rem Koolhaas’s S,M,L,XL as a provisional peak, 010 have published books on the most wide-ranging architecture, interior design, photography, industrial design, graphic design and the visual arts. These aspects include a keen interest in the theory and history of architecture and design. The lion’s share of this book is taken up with a catalogue spanning the period 1983–2003. Exhaustively annotated and illustrated, it gives not just the technical details of each book such as size, format, and binding style but also the authors, editors, photographers, graphic designers and printers. A brief description of the contents rounds off each entry. Comprehensive indexes give insight into who contributed to which book and in what way. In their introductory essay Ed Taverne and Cor Wagenaar give a picture of the practice of architectural publishing in the Netherlands during those years. 48
