Zahájení provozu
The Start-up of Operation

The opening ceremony for the first bus line took place outside the Old Town City Hall on the 20th of June 20 1925, from where the participants in the event travelled on the two buses to the actual route of the first bus line, which ran from Čechovo Square in Vršovice to Záběhlice. Its regular operation for the public was initiated on the following day, the 21st of June 1925.

90 years of operation of buses in Prague
The first of the buses of the new generation were two Laurin & Klement 540 vehicles that were produced in Mladá Boleslav. They were able to accommodate 20 seated and 10 standing passengers. In terms of their size (they were only 7.2 m long) they were more comparable with today’s midibuses than with the standard vehicles. In addition to its petrol engine, vehicle number 2 was also equipped, for testing purposes, with a wood gas generator. An interesting feature of the first vehicles was the manner of line marking by triangular prisms, as was the case with trams. The destination station was indicated by means a large rotating sign that was located on the roof of the vehicle.

From 1927, on certain routes, the low passenger-capacity of the earliest vehicles was augmented by the additional use of bus trailers. These had sufficient capacity for 35 passengers. Because the Praga NO bus was designed to carry 40 passengers, the increased capacity of this “train” enabled providing simultaneous transportation for a total of 75 passengers. Regular operation using trailers terminated in 1932. Towed vehicles, of a different type however, reappeared in 1944 for a period of several years. “Alternativní” pohon “Alternative” Fuel
Nedostatek pohonných hmot vyvolaný novou světovou válkou si v roce 1941 vyžádal používání náhradních pohonných hmot i v autobusové dopravě.

In 1941, the fuel shortage caused by the Second World War necessitated the use of alternative fuels, including for bus transportation. The utilisation of a wood-gas propelled drive became widespread. The requisite blocks of wood were transported in bags on the roof of the bus (see the photo). Also used as a fuel was uncompressed coal gas kept in a large rubber bag, which was stored on the roof of the bus. A third possibility was the use of propane-butane while the final option was the use of compressed coal gas, in which case the requisite steel cylinders were transported on special trailers.

Byli to například František Černý, Ing. Vladimír Vlček, Josef Aleš, Antonín Boháč, Emanuel Hladík, Jindřich Morstein, Karel Zitta, Emil Hladík a mnoho dalších.

One of the best-known but also more controversial bus operators was Vladimír Nedoma (it is his bus that is shown in the photo), who would drive to Zbraslav or to Modřany, for example, frequently without the requisite licence.

Poválečná Praga NDO
90 years of operation of buses in Prague

Even many years after the war buses represented no more than a minor complement to the tram network. In 1948 only 15 bus lines were operational and these were only lines that were feeding the tram network. In the years between 1948 and 1959 just a few new lines were created. At the time preference was being given to the construction of trolley lines. In 1948, a significant addition to the Prague bus service was the first post-war supply of 50 Praga NDO vehicles. Introduced on these vehicles was the organised boarding of passengers and therefore the entrance doors (in the rear) and the exit doors (in front) were made easy to distinguish. The conductor, in contrast to the previous practices, had his fixed workstation next to the rear door. První autobusy Škoda The First Škoda Buses

The legendary Škoda 706 RTO buses that were first deployed in 1959 became a great asset for the bus transportation on the newly established line No. 125. This line replaced trolleybus line No. 51 not only in terms of its route, but also in regard to the planned but unmaterialised extension to Revoluční třída Street in the City centre.

ŠM 11 Buses
Další významnou změnou dokumentující nesmírný rozvoj autobusové dopravy se v roce 1965 staly nové městské autobusy ŠM 11. Z pohledu cestujících to byly první třídveřové autobusy v pražské MHD, což urychlilo na zastávkách odbavování cestujících. Z technického hlediska byla důležitá celková změna koncepčního přístupu k autobusům. Do té doby byly jejich základem hlavně podvozky nákladních automobilů. Nyní byla poprvé použita samonosná karosérie s motorem umístěným pod podlahou. V letech 1965–1981 bylo do Prahy dodáno 2256 vozů ŠM 11 v několika modifikacích.

In 1965, the new and modernised ŠM 11 city buses constituted another significant change that documented the immense development of bus transportation . From the passengers’ viewpoint these represented the first three-door buses in the Prague public transport system, thereby accelerating the boarding and the exiting of passengers at bus stops. From the technical point of view what was important was the change in the overall conceptual approach to the buses. Up till then, it had been based primarily on the truck chassis. Now, utilised for the first time, was a frameless body with the engine mounted beneath the floor. During the years 1965 and 1981 2256 ŠM 11 vehicles in several different modifications were provided for use in Prague. In 1968, 21 of the surrounding villages became a part of Prague. Thirteen of these were already connected by city buses, while during the years 1968-1969 eight new routes were also introduced. Also included amongst these was line No. 162 that had been in operation since the 2nd June 1969 on the route between Vozovna Kobylisy and Dolní Chabry (see the picture). After the initiation of the operation of the metro the manner of the use of the bus network slowly started to transform by establishing the first feed lines to the metro lines.
