his rather knowing and meta exchange tells you all you need to know about the sort-of sequel to National Lampoon’s fondly regarded 1983 film ‘Vacation’; which confuses things a bit, as the kind-of sequel is also called ‘Vacation’… Quick bit of background for those not au fait with the original: back in the ‘70s there was an edgy comedy magazine called ‘National Lampoon’. Off the back of the magazines success came a series of films that were made under their banner, and one of their most famous creations was the dysfunctional Griswold family. After the original ‘Vacation’ the Griswolds featured in a further four films: ‘European Vacation’, ‘Christmas Vacation’, ‘Vegas Vacation’ and ‘Christmas Vacation 2’. After a 12-year hiatus,


it’s time for a new group of Griswolds to attempt the rigours of that most stressful of things: a family vacation. Rusty Griswold has hit a bad patch in his career as a budget airline pilot and has become a laughing stock amongst his fellow pilots. Making matters worse, his marriage is slowly dying. In a desperate attempt to salvage what remains of his marriage, Rusty decides to take his family on a road trip they’ll never forget the one slight hiccup being that the destination he has in mind is Wally World: a theme park that’s well past its best, and is hardly the place to rekindle a dying marriage. At the helm of the ‘Vacation’ reboot are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (‘Horrible Bosses’), who are well served by their leading man, the very capable Ed Helms (‘The Hangover’, ‘The Office’), who is now an old pro when it comes to bawdy comedies. Playing Rusty’s displeased spouse is Christina Applegate (‘Anchorman’, ‘Up All Night’), who makes for a very credible,

very unimpressed better half. The comedic energy that the pair have leads to some awkward, and believable, exchanges throughout. Crumbling marriages made for high comedy 400 years ago, and it’s unlikely that’s going to change any time soon. As funny as Applegate and Helms are, the film is almost stolen out from under them by the short cameo appearance from Hollywood A-lister Chris Hemsworth. The Australian man-mountain makes the most of his short appearance and shows his comedy timing is as good as any comedian’s. His narcissistic rancher is introduced just at the right time, giving the film’s third act a comedic boost at a point when the plot’s momentum seems about to flag. In fact, Hemsworth does so well that his loss is felt during the remaining runtime. This is less a knock on the film itself, and more a credit to Hemsworth’s surprising comedic chops. equels offer diminishing returns – that’s the accepted rule of thumb. But there are exceptions. Skipping past the slightly wayward first sequel, the ‘Mission: Impossible’ films have each successfully built on what came before. The perils have been high, the storytelling lean, and the set pieces decidedly impossible (and getting more so with each film). ‘Ghost Protocol’ set a new standard with its vertiginous sequence on the exterior of the Burj Khalifa, but Christopher McQuarrie – the writer and director of the latest instalment – outdoes it in the opening moments of ‘Rogue Nation’. And then sets out to outdo it again, and then again. And then one more time. The set-up: Ethan Hunt (still played by walking ball of charisma Tom Cruise) and his team are disbanded and absorbed into the CIA after one too many missions that have resulted in a large amount of collateral damage. Brandt (an underused Jeremy Renner) does his best to keep the CIA from taking control of the IMF (“Impossible Missions Force”, for those not in the know),

but to no avail. Meanwhile, in London, Ethan learns that a network of highly skilled operatives – known as The Syndicate – are stealthily changing the course of world events via death and destruction. Stopping a vast underground network would be difficult at the best of times, but doing so when no one at the CIA believes they exist? Quite possibly impossible. Whilst the previous ‘Mission: Impossible’ films hinged around a couple of key set pieces, ‘Rogue Nation’ is teeming with them. If you’ve seen the trailers you’ll have caught the sequence in which Cruise dangles from an immense army plane. It’s an impressive scene, one that gives the appearance (in the trailer) that it’s the culmination of a series of key events. It isn’t. It’s just act one, scene one, of a rollercoaster ride of a film. McQuarrie writes and shoots the set pieces with a deft hand, showing that he’s learnt a lot since his first big-budget Hollywood movie, ‘Jack Reacher’. But, impressive as the staging is, the real pyrotechnics come from Cruise. At 52 years of age – at the time of filming – he

manages feats of physical strength and agility that would leave most men a wreck. Most notably he carries out the opening stunt himself – although a later stunt, which sees him having to hold his breath for 3 minutes whilst completing a seemingly impossible underwater task, is the more impressive feat. It’d be easy to become blasé about what Ethan and his team must achieve – they are, after all, the Impossible Missions Force – but McQuarrie keeps things knowingly playful, much as Brad Bird and J.J. Abrams did in their own instalments. When a new agent, the possibly duplicitous Ilsa (a very game Rebecca Ferguson), describes the impregnable stronghold that Ethan will have to break into, Benji (Simon Pegg) shrugs it off. But the mounting details, and Ethan’s increasingly worried aspect, tell us that there may be such a thing as too impossible…

oxing movies are frequently a staple of cinematic, feel-good triumphs. From ‘Rocky’ to ‘Million Dollar Baby’, audiences are forever seeking their next hit of a fairy tale that transforms one person – often an underdog – into a hard-hitting, courageous champion. Enter our lean and raggedy hero for this emotional and physical journey: Jake Gyllenhaal.

journey – one with an abundant amount of energy. It wouldn’t be a boxing film without a training montage – this one with Forest Whitaker, who plays Gyllenhaal’s coach – and the hip hop beats that play over the training scenes add an impressive intensity to the proceedings. Making these clichéd moments work better than they would otherwise is the gritty tone that Fuqua establishes early on.

‘Southpaw’ follows Billy Hope (Gyllenhaal) after he defends his world light-heavyweight championship. After an altercation with his boxing rival, his wife (Rachel McAdams) is killed in an accident. This sends Hope on a downward spiral which leads to drugs, drink and antisocial behaviour, and which results in his title, and his daughter, being taken from him. Once at rock bottom he finally begins the journey back into the light, but he’ll have to fight (at times literally) to get his daughter and his title back.

The fallen man who must fight to regain past glories is a common Hollywood story, but ‘Southpaw’ gives the actors room to bond and experiment; this makes the tale feel much fresher than it ought to have any right to.

This is a movie that is unapologetically tenacious. The story is full of gritty and dramatic scenes which take Gyllenhaal into highly demanding territory, and he handles it with aplomb. He’s clearly worked hard to get the physique right, but he’s also hit upon the right state of mind. His tattoos, his muscles, his battle scars, his at times erratic speech patterns all contribute to an excellent and well-realised performance. Although the film has its dark moments, it mostly follows the classic boxing movie formula; unfortunately we don’t get an ‘Eye of the Tiger’ singalong (or equivalent), but director Antoine Fuqua makes up for this oversight with a familiar, adrenaline-fuelled

t’s likely that ‘Song of the Sea’ went under your radar when it was released earlier this year, much in the same way as you no doubt missed the director’s earlier effort, ‘The Secret of Kells’, five years ago. Today would be a good day to start making up for that unintended neglect. ‘Song of the Sea’ tells the tale of a young Irish boy, Ben, and his little sister, Saoirse (pronounced SEER-sha). On Saoirse’s birthday she discovers a white sealskin coat, hidden in the back of her father’s closet. The coat, when worn in the ocean, turns her into a selkie. If you’re not familiar with the term, think of it as a seal, albeit one that turns into a human when on land. Before Saoirse can get to grips with what the discovery means, she and her brother are whisked away to the mainland by their granny, leaving their father alone in the lighthouse that they call home. Despite being taken to the city the children still find themselves in the midst of strange mystical happenings, as they come upon faeries (hidden in the central island of a roundabout), the Owl Witch Macha (a powerful and dangerous woman) and, later, the Great Seanachai (a rather odd, follically gifted fellow). Tomm Moore’s ‘Song of the Sea’ is a more straightforward and elegant film than my synopsis might suggest, and the above account doesn’t even touch upon the disappearance of Ben and Saoirse’s mother, or the grief suffered by the giant Mac

Lir, who has his own part to play in the machinations of Macha and the faeries. The film sees tales told within tales, with characters and actions mirroring each other in ways both ingenious and moving. Every carefully animated frame has a texture and a feel that gives the impression that its story and characters have a heritage that dates back millennia. (And, in fact, they do.) The polish and precision of the films of Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks is impressive, but the world could do with more gems like this. Not all hand-drawn animation is worthy of special note, but in this instance, the film feels like it’s imbued with the soul of all those who helped craft it.

he goggle and dungaree-wearing sidekicks to Gru’s evil-ish villain are back, and have been elevated to chief protagonist status. ‘Minions’ acts as a prequel to the highly successful ‘Despicable Me’ films, showing how the adorable creatures came to settle on Gru as their master. Early on we learn that the minions’ sole reason for being is to serve history’s baddest and cruellest rulers and villains. From the T-Rex to Dracula to Napoleon, they have served them all; but after accidentally killing each one (they’re a teeny-tiny bit inept) they decide to isolate themselves from the world and build their own, slightly simplistic, civilisation in Antarctica. The fun and frolics eventually turn to despair and the minions come to believe they’ve lost their sense of purpose. Their lives simply aren’t fulfilled when they’re without an evil master to order them about. Enter Kevin, a brave (and foolhardy) minion who aims to go out into the world to find them all a new boss. Volunteering to join him – to some degree accidentally – is the angsty and guitar-obsessed Stuart and the ever-enthusiastic Bob. After a long journey the trio find themselves on the shores of New York, circa 1968. When they accidentally learn of Villain-Con, an annual supervillain gathering held in Orlando, they make a beeline for the convention. Attending the con is the greatest supervillain of all, the highly capable Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). Through some minor


bumbling and stumbling the trio somehow find themselves in the employ of someone they can truly look up to. Whilst this is all happening, the rest of the minions have, rather unexpectedly, found new bosses of their own, in the form of Abominable Snowmen. But how long will it be before the minions accidentally shorten their new bosses’ lifespans? This fast-paced animated comedy comes with a massive helping of silly humour, which has long been the ‘Despicable Me’ series, chief weapon to disarm and charm audiences. It’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to resist the hyperactive cuteness that is the driving heart of ‘Minions’. Simply put: resistance is futile. So catch the film on board today!

uru Bangsa Tjokroaminoto is an autobiographical drama about the Indonesian national hero Oemar Said Tjokroaminoto. It was released earlier this year and was helmed by the award-winning director Garin Nugroho. The story begins in Indonesia, towards the end of the 1800s, when the Dutch East Indies Company successfully established and continued to expand its physical and political influences in the local region. Under the Dutch government’s administration many changes have taken place, but poverty is still common and widespread. The majority of people aren’t able to get an education, and social inequality is clearly visible everywhere. Born into a noble family in Ponorogo, East Java, Tjokroaminoto could have enjoyed a comfortable life with privilege and prestige, but he decides to leave and work as a stevedore, and goes through the same hardships and difficulties as the commoners with whom he works. The film then details his struggle to build the ‘Sarekat Islam (Islamic Union), which he hoped would stand for the rights and interests of regular men and women. When the organization was eventually legalized by government its membership numbers soon grew to over two million. Tjokroaminoto’s leadership brought about a greater public awareness of the inequities the people were facing – this worried the Dutch government. As a result, they started to place various regulations and restrictions on the existence and growth of the Sarekat Islam. But nothing could stop Tjokroaminoto. He inspired and taught many young students

to hope and work for a unified, dignified, educated and prosperous nation. One of his students, Soekarno, followed his ideals and achieved Tjokroaminoto’s seemingly impossible dream. Watching ‘Guru Bangsa Tjokroaminoto’ is to feel part of history. The realistically staged scenes and the intriguing storylines will take you from the present day back to the late 19th century. For me, it was as if I was actually seeing and talking and living with the film’s famous public figures, and experiencing what they were thinking and feeling. It isn’t, and that’s okay. What we have here is a guilty pleasure. A lighthearted, easy-going romp, with its tongue

firmly in its cheek. ‘The Librarians’ is set within the same adventuring sandpit as ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘National Treasure’, and it quickly pulls you into its satisfyingly silly world. Deep, DEEP underground (250 floors down, to be exact), beneath an ‘ordinary’ library, is another library. This one is vast, and it’s filled with famous historical items, as well as a few that you might recognise from fairy tales and stories of old. The man in charge of the Library is Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle – ‘ER’, ‘Falling Skies’) who goes by the alias: The Librarian. His sole job is to protect the secrets of the library. Why such secrecy? Because the artefacts possess enormous power, and must be kept out of the wrong hands.

Those wrong hands belong to the menacing ‘Serpent Brotherhood’; an evil syndicate that aims to exploit the magical powers in the artefacts stored in the library. Helping Carsen in his battle to keep the world safe is a rat pack of ‘potential librarians’, who were chosen because of their superior intellect and talents. The group consists of Jake Stone (Christian Kane – ‘Angel’, ‘Leverage’), Eve Baird (Rebecca Romijn – ‘X-Men’, ‘The Punisher’), Cassandra Cillian (Lindy Booth – ‘Dawn of the Dead’, ‘Odyssey 5’) and Ezekiel Jones (John Kim – ‘Neighbour’). he epic of the Ramayana is hugely influential in Indonesia – especially on the island of Java. In this episode of ‘World of Wayang’ you’ll get to meet the famous Indonesian humanist Sujiwo Tejo, and you’ll learn more about Ramayana via traditional, and rather colourful, drama-dancing. The story of Ramayana begins with Lady Shinta choosing her prospective groom, Lord Rama. After they’re married, King Ravana appears and kidnaps Shinta and takes her to his kingdom. Little does he know that Shinta has been dropping her ornaments, one by one, along the route. When Rama learns Shinta is missing he gives chase, and follows the discarded ornaments.

LED ZEPPELIN – CODA A

s the end of the year inches its way ever closer, this seems as good a time as any to look back at what has happened over the last 10 months. What was good, what was bad and maybe even what should never happen again. Back in 1982, Led Zeppelin issued a late tribute to their erstwhile drummer John Bonham, in the form of an album with outtakes, samples, unused tracks and some extensive drum solos from John, called ‘Coda’; the album received a mixed reception. Fast forward 30 years, remaster the originals, add 40 minutes more of rarities and outtakes and the album elevates

itself into a fitting tribute to the entire band, showing how the musical changes that were happening in the early ‘80s were not beyond the reach of arguably one of the biggest rock bands of all time. This falls into the collection of re-releases that founding member Jimmy Page has been putting together, and illustrates how he has dug deep in the archives to offer fans a stunning collection of tracks. There are familiar strays, such as ‘Baby Come On Home’, from the sessions for 1969’s ‘Led Zeppelin’ album, but there is also ‘Sugar Mama’, a track noticeable for its absence from the same album.

MUSIC FEATURE

“Led Zeppelin... arguably one of the biggest rock bands of all time.” As the band explored various changes in music – which can be seen in their tracks which nod to the New Wave era that was happening in the early ‘80s (such as ‘Ozone Baby’ and ‘Darlene’) – you can get the impression that the band aren’t the force they had once been. And yet with ‘Friends’ and ‘Four Hands’, which Plant and Page mixed with the Bombay Orchestra, you can clearly hear how they explored new sounds and embraced international music, and it’s also apparent that this experimentation was very much a part of their identity. One thing is for sure, talk of reforming or not won’t recreate the sound that was so special. This is where year-end thoughts can diverge. Some find it sad that we’ll never hear their like again. I prefer a more optimistic outlook, as they left us with so much that was so very good. And that includes this latest release, with over 90 minutes of special tracks through which we can relive (albeit briefly) happening upon their music for the first time.
