1. Introduction Freshwater triclads of phylum flatworms, traditionally called planarians (Platyhelminthes: „Turbellaria”: Tricladida) are frequent but hardly known animals in Hungary, Europe. Most of them are predator, necrophagous and hidden animals which may occur in large volumes of water fauna. Biologists in Hungary do not pay attention on freshwater triclads (or shortly: triclads), although they are frequent and widesped creatures. Direct researches had not been carried out in Hungary since the 1960s before my researches in the Bükk Mountains from 2003. • • • • • • • • •

2. Objectives Completion of the bibliography of freshwater triclads in Hungary: collecting and listing each relevant publication. Processing of science history of the research of Hungarian freshwater triclads: research historical evaluation of each publication of the bibliography. Research on the freshwater triclads’ faunistics in waters of the Bükk and other mountains, the River Danube, based on professional literature and own data; occurrence of triclad species in waters, water courses and landscapes. Genetical research of C. alpina for pointing to the spatio-temporal pattern: exploring of population connections and history of the C. alpina special distributional pattern. Checklist of the Hungarian freshwater triclads: listing of the species of Hungary, based on professional literature and my own data. Nature conservation evaluation of the Hungarian freshwater triclads: by species, characterization of distribution and situation in Hungary, suggestions for conservation. Processing of a key to the freshwater triclads of Hungary: preparing a key. 3. Materials and methods I processed the science history of the research of Hungarian freshwater triclads by a comprehensive bibliography research. I used simple and timed collection for the research on the faunistics in the Bükk and other mountains. Numbers of specimen/hour are comparable that came from timed collection data converted to 60 minutes collecting. I set quantity categories; the medium quantity was 100–399 specimen/hour. I introduced the River Danube triclad fauna by identification of collection from the Danube Research Institute, the Centre for Ecological Research, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. I collected Crenobia alpina specimens for the genetical research, from 14 headwaters (springs and upper zones of streams) of the Nagy Plateau and the Kis Plateau regions; from the top and the side of the plateau; water courses of the Garadna–Szinva streams, the Bán stream and the Hór stream; 22 specimens were examined. I completed the checklist of the Hungarian freshwater triclads by professional literature research and research on the freshwater triclads’ faunistics.

• I evaluated the Hungarian freshwater triclads for the aims of nature conservation by data of professional literature and my own observations. • I processed a key to the freshwater triclads of Hungary based on the checklist of the Hungarian freshwater triclads, present keys and species descriptions. 1. 2. 3.

4. New scientific results (Thesis points) The known Hungarian triclad fauna increased with 2 species during my researches: Phagocata vitta (Bükk Mountains, Mátra Mountains), Dendrocoelum romanodanubiale (River Danube). 17 identified species: 15 native and 2 non-native freshwater triclads were reported from Hungary up to 2015. Presently none of the Hungarian triclad species is protected by law. My researches pointed out that 7 species need protection (Dendrocoelum album, Dendrocoelum hankoi, Dendrocoelum pannonicum, Crenobia alpina, Phagocata albissima, P. vitta, Polycelis tothi). Significant number of C. alpina live in the Bükk Mountains only. Comparing to the published occurrences, C. alpina is decreasing in the Mátra and the Bükk Mountains, and was not found in the Börzsöny Mountains. Narrowly distributed rare species are known from caves of the Mecsek Mountains (D. pannonicum, P. tothi), Balaton Highlands (D. album, D. hankoi), the Mátra and the Bükk Mountains (P. albissima, P. vitta). D. pannonicum and D. hankoi were not found in the last researches. The Bükk Mountains have the richest triclad fauna in Hungary: 6 species, 3 are frequent (D. gonocephala, P. felina, C. alpina) and 3 rare (Dendrocoelum lacteum, P. albissima, P. vitta). 3 triclad species live on the plateau: 2 rare (P. felina, C. alpina), 1 extremely rare (P. vitta). 5 species live in the plateau boundaries and joined deep side valleys: 2 frequent (D. gonocephala, P. felina), 2 rare (D. lacteum, C. alpina), 1 extremely rare (P. albissima). The zonal mountainous species of Dugesia gonocephala – Polycelis felina – Crenobia alpina are typical in the Northern Mountain Range and Lower Alps, but all the three mountainous species occur only in the Bükk Mountains in Hungary. These species hardly occur in the Transdanubian Mountain Range, while according to the current data, P. felina is completely absent. 3 triclad species live in the isolated, swallowing waters of the Bükk Plateau, along the Jávorkút–Létrás line, the C. alpina is in 6 water bodies. Spreading is not a clearly known process; therefore we carried out genetical examination. C. alpina can be arranged into 3 groups: HUN-A, HUN-B and HUN-C haplotypes. The mosaic genetical pattern of HUN-B–HUN-C and the surrounded, isolated HUN-A, and the calculated time of separation suggests that HUN-A occupied the Bükk Mountains firstly. It appeared at the gradually formed relief and water system in the Pleistocene, but before the formation of Holocene, probably. Later this species was isolated due to the stream capture of plateau flow. Than HUN-B and HUN-C might have arrived into the Bükk, but could not enter on the Plateau due to the lack of surface flow. The mosaic genetical pattern is probably the consequence of spreading–withdrawal of repeated climatic changes. C. alpina have to arrive into the waters of Jávorkút–Létrás with „exclusively active spread in surface water flow” from North–East, through the former side branches of the 4
Garadna–Szinva streams which were revealed by surface morphological researches.
