INTRODUCTION Ruderal communities have been established following spontaneous, unintended human activity. Areas under permanent but not regular and direct anthropogenic influence as around built-up areas, fallow lands and roadsides are usually characterised by ruderal vegetation. Ruderal habitats are usually described by rude soil covered by vegetation growing in mixed patches corresponding to the spotted influence of diverse environmental factors. Definition of ruderal habitats and criteria of ruderal weed communities proves to be problematic and is mostly based on tradition. Ruderal places are considered genetic puffer zones for dangerous weeds and reservoirs for pests and diseases. In everyday sense not only fields and gardens infested with weeds are considered weedy areas, but we also mean neglected field edges and surroundings of localities by this term. Areas without regular mowing, in addition to increasing the populations of native weeds, allow the naturalisation and spread of many adventive plants. A significant part of ruderal places act as green corridors, ensuring the distribution of weeds. Nowadays the adverse effect of ruderal vegetations is most commonly mentioned in the case of ruderal weed associations provoking allergy. In addition to harmful effects, vegetation consisting of species adapted to local conditions can develop at wellmanaged places with mowing and chemical weed control, e.g. along the banks of ditches and motorways, as well as at places filled up. Thorough knowledge is necessary for the reasonable treatment of ruderal associations. There are several species among the weed plants in ruderal associations that can provide raw material for the pharmaceutical industry. There is a strong development of research and syntaxonomical classification considering ruderal vegetation. Recently there have been significant changes in the species composition and dominance relations of weeds, which called the attention for re-evaluation of the weed communities, including ruderal ones. The aim of the investigation was the geobotanical study of the ruderal vegetation in the Zala hills in Southwest Transdanubia. The studied area is diverse; the distribution and composition of the ruderal vegetation are of phytogeographic and economic importance. No phytogeographic monographs have been published on the ruderal associations of the area concerned. The study was seeking the answer to the following questions: – Which ruderal associations are characteristic of the studied area? – What are the characteristics of the floristic spectra of the associations? – What kind of differences are there among the associations from the viewpoint of social behaviour types? – How big are the differences among the associations from the viewpoint of relative ecological indicator values? – What is the composition of soils where ruderal associations develop? 2
– Is there any correlation between the occurrences of the particular associations and the characteristics of their soils? – What is the current distribution of the associations on the studied area? – Are there any ruderal associations and weed species which are frequent in other parts of Hungary but are rare in the studied area?
MATERIALS AND METHODS The studied area is situated on Zala hills in Southwest Transdanubia. The studies extended to three middle-size regions, such as Western Zala hills, in particular Upper Zala valley, Northern part of Middle Zala hills (Göcsej), Eastern Zala hills, in particular the northern part of Egerszeg-Letenye hills, Principális valley and Zalaapáti ridge, Lower Zala valley, Zalavári ridge, and the Balaton basin, in particular Minor Balaton basin and the lake-side around Keszthely. The surface of the studied area covers 940 km2. The studies were carried on the border of the floristic regions Praeillyricum and Noricum in Southwest Hungary. The climate of the studied area is transitional. Continental climate types are characteristic of the eastern part and Atlantic types are typical in the western one. The plant association relevés were carried out according to the standard method of BRAUN-BLANQUET. The relevés were analysed by using KOPECKý & HEJNý’s (1974) methods. In the first step of the analysis, relevés were classified into groups at alliance or association level. In the second step, these groups were analysed separately by a numerical classification scheme. During the numerical analyses, BRAUN-BLANQUET values were transformed according to VAN DER MAAREL (1979). Dissimilarity among relevés was measured by similarity ratio; complete linkage was used as clustering method (PODANI 1993). Numerical analysis was done by SYNTAX package (PODANI 1993). The floristic spectrum of the associations was compared to that of the plant species present in Southwest Transdanubia (KÁROLYI – PÓCS 1968). Social behaviour types and relative ecological indicator values by BORHIDI, as well as the soil analyses data were applied for characterising the associations. The habitats were described by analysing the samples taken from the upper 0-20 cm layer of the soil. Data were recorded for the following parameters: pH, contents of carbonates, humus and total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper and lead. During the characterisation of soils of ruderal associations, humus, total nitrogen and carbonate contents were applied as relative values at low, middle and high levels. The categories were set by identifying the mean values for each soil parameter, calculated from the average of all the samples. Canonical correspondence analysis was applied for analysing the relation between plant associations and the related soil parameters. 3
RESULTS Twenty-three ruderal associations were identified in Zala hills in Southwest Transdanubia. They are as follows: Hordeetum murini, Polygono arenastriLepidietum ruderalis, Malvetum neglectae, Onopordetum acanthii subass. typicum, Onopordetum acanthii subass. arctietosum, Carduo-Onopordetum acanthii, Convolvulo-Agropyretum repentis, Lepidietum drabae, BallotoMalvetum sylvestris, Arctietum lappae, Carduetum acanthoidis, ArctioArtemisietum vulgaris, Conietum maculati, Cannabietum spontaneae, TanacetoArtemisietum vulgaris subass. typicum, Dauco-Picridetum, DC Calamagrostis epigeios [Onopordetalia], DC Helianthus tuberosus s.l. [Artemisietea vulgaris], Sambucetum ebuli, Chaerophylletum bulbosi, DC Fallopia japonica s.l. [GalioUrticetea], Polygonetum arenastri, Lolio-Plantaginetum majoris. Anthriscetum sylvestris, one of the most important hilly associations, as well as DaucoPicridetum, DC Calamagrostis epigeios [Onopordetalia] and Onopordetum acanthii subass. arctietosum were described for the first time in Hungary. Ruderal communities are dominated by Eurasian, cosmopolitan and adventive species. The share of the Eurasian, cosmopolitan and adventive elements in the ruderal associations were higher than in the flora of Southwest Transdanubia described by KÁROLYI and PÓCS. Except for the invader-dominated ruderal associations, disturbance-tolerant generalists and native weeds account for more than 50% the species. Various associations (Trifolio repenti-Lolietum, Polygonetum avicularis, DaucoPicridetum and Anthriscetum sylvestris) are dominated by disturbance tolerant, generalist plants. Proposals were put forward for the revision of the relative ecological indicator values in the case of the following species: Lolium perenne, Xanthium spinosum, Artemisia vulgaris and Rubus caesius. Based on the analyses of ruderal soils studied in Zala hills, the soils were neutral in chemical reaction, regarding the texture, 88% were loam, while clay and sand had smaller shares. The most common associations characteristic of ruderal vegetation in the studied area were Arction, Dauco-Melilotion and Galio-Urticetea. Arction associations (Balloto-Malvetum sylvestris, Arctio-Artemisietum vulgaris, Arctietum lappae and Conietum maculati) developed on disturbed soil surfaces. Tanaceto-Artemisietum subass. typicum usually grows on neglected ditch sides and field edges. Galio-Urticetea associations (Sambucetum ebuli, Chaerophylletum bulbosi and Anthriscetum sylvestris) as margin associations on hillsides dominate the ruderal vegetation on forest edges, field edges and ditch sides. Trampled vegetation is characterised by Lolio-Plantaginetum majoris and Polygonetum arenastri associations. The results of floristic studies on continental ruderal associations and species confirmed the existence of the floradividing line assumed by BORBÁS. The floristic distribution of Solidago canadensis and Fallopia japonica s.l. were determined. 4
NEW SCIENTIFIC RESULTS
The most important scientific results of the studies conducted between 1992 and 1998 are as follows: 1. Determination of ruderal plant communities Ruderal communities have been established following spontaneous, unintended human activity. Areas of permanent but not regular and direct anthropogenic influence as around built-up areas, fallow lands and road-sides are usually characterised by ruderal vegetation. Ruderal habitats are usually characterised by rude soil covered by vegetation growing in mixed patches corresponding to the spotted influence of diverse environmental factors. The typical elements of this plant community are disturbance tolerant plants of natural habitats [DT], anthropophilic elements of the native flora, native weed species [W], alien competitors, aggressive invaders [AC] and ruderal competitors of secondary habitats [RC]. In synsystematic terms, we consider the plant associations of the following communities as ruderal: order Sisymbrietalia (segetal and ruderal vegetations) in class Stellarietea mediae, and communities of Artemisietea vulgaris (roadside weed vegetation), GalioUrticetea (ruderal communities at the edges of shady and humid places) and Polygono arenastri-Poëtea annuae (trampled weed associations) (DANCZA 2002 cit. BORHIDI 2003). 2. Documentation of new plant associations for Hungary in Zala hills Twenty-three associations and subassociations were identified in Zala hills, among them the following ones were identified in Hungary for the first time: Anthriscetum sylvestris, Dauco-Picridetum, Onopordetum acanthii subass. typicum, Onopordetum acanthii subass. arctietosum and DC Calamagrostis epigeios [Onopordetalia]. 3. Proposal for re-classification of ruderal plant associations It was suggested to re-classify Tanaceto-Artemisietum and Sambucetum ebuli, identifying them as Dauco-Melilotion alliance and Galio-Urticetea association, respectively. 4. Contribution to the knowledge of ruderal plant communities based on social behaviour types of plant species Except for the invader-dominated ruderal associations, disturbance-tolerant generalists and native weeds account for more than 50% of the species. 5
5. Revision of the relative ecological indicator values Proposals were made for the re-examination of the relative ecological indicator values of the following species. Lolium perenne is classified as a plant of soils rich in mineral nitrogen (NB7). Instead, the plant is recommended to be placed in the group of mesotrophic habitats (NB5) or of habitats moderately rich in nutrients (NB6). Xanthium spinosum is mostly present at places with abundant nitrogen supply, therefore this species, classified for mesotrophic habitats (NB5), can be better considered a plant of soils rich in nutrients. Associations included in Dauco-Melilotion alliance develop in mesotrophic habitats, therefore the position of Artemisia vulgaris as a N-indicator plant (NB8) needs to be re-examined. According to the author’s opinion, Rubus caesius, considered a plant of overfertilized soils extremely rich in mineral nitrogen, should be better grouped for habitats moderately rich in nutrients (NB6) or for ones with N-indicator plants of fertilized soils (NB8). According to BORHIDI’S classification Elymus repens is a plant of slightly acid soils (RB5). Instead of this, the status of a plant of neutral soils (RB6) is recommended for this species. The inaccurate classification of Elymus repens causes problems during the analysis of the ecological indicator values for ruderal associations. Due to the mistaken classification, the share of plants of slightly acid soils is high in associations dominated by Elymus repens. 6. Soil relations of ruderal plant communities a) Based on the analyses for ruderal plant associations, the soils below them were mainly loam, while clay and sand had smaller shares. b) It was concluded from the canonical correspondence analysis of nine plant associations and their soil analytical values that Onopordion associations (Carduo-Onopordetum acanthii, Onopordetum acanthii subass. typicum, Onopordetum acanthii subass. arctietosum) and Anthriscetum sylvestris were characterised by low values i.e. with high nitrogen, sodium and calcium but with relatively lower pH and total carbonate concentration. Balloto-Malvetum sylvestris, Tanaceto-Artemisietum subass. typicum, Sambucetum ebuli, Arctio-Artemisietum and Arctietum lappae associations develop on soils characterised by higher carbonate concentration and pH. Anthriscetum sylvestris, Onopordetum acanthii subass. arctietosum, Onopordetum acanthii subass. typicum and Carduo-Onopordetum acanthii associations follow a line from high humus content towards high available phosphorus and sodium concentration. Associations on highly carbonated soils can be placed into two groups with Balloto-Malvetum sylvestris and Tanaceto-Artemisietum subass. typicum in the first one, characterised by high humus concentration. 6
The second group consists of plant associations on soils with high sodium and magnesium contents: Sambucetum ebuli, Arctio-Artemisietum and Arctietum lappae. 7. Contribution to the knowledge of the floristic spectrums of ruderal plant communities The floristic spectrums of the ruderal associations are determined by Eurasian, cosmopolitan and adventive elements. The floristic spectrum of plant species in Southwest Transdanubia (KÁROLYI – PÓCS 1968) is similar to that of the ruderal associations. However, Eurasian, cosmopolitan and adventive species are even more characteristic of ruderal associations. 8. Distribution of ruderal plant communities and ruderal and invasive species with plant geographic relevance Examining the distribution of ruderal associations it was concluded that certain continental associations and species were common in Hungary but their presence was restricted to the eastern part of the studied area. Ruderal communities present only in the eastern part of the studied area are as follows: Hordeetum murini, Polygono arenastri-Lepidietum ruderalis, Malvetum neglectae, Onopordetum acanthii subass. arctietosum, Onopordetum acanthii subass. typicum, Carduo-Onopordetum acanthii, Dauco-Picridetum, DC Calamagrostis epigeios ass. [Onopordetalia], Carduetum acanthoidis, Convolvulo-Agropyretum repentis, Lepidietum drabae. The results of floristic studies on continental ruderal associations and species confirmed the existence of the flora-dividing line assumed by BORBÁS. It was concluded that the Eurasian species, such as Atriplex sagittata, Atriplex tatarica, Chenopodium glaucum, Chenopodium urbicum, Chenopodium vulvaria, Parietaria officinalis, Reseda luteola, Rumex patientia and Xanthium spinosum were not or were only rarely present to the west of the flora-dividing line postulated by BORBÁS (lower course of Zala river and Minor-Balaton basin). The current geographic distribution of Solidago canadensis and Fallopia japonica s.l. was determined.
