THESES CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS
J. K. Rowling wrote her series for ten years; therefore the work I was dealing with is a highly elaborate one to every single detail. My thesis is that the work is the bearer of such literary merits by which it will definitely stand the test of time and the sagacity of literary critics. These ten years reveal that what we encounter is something of an immense magnitude both in its length and in its massive complexity and richness. This complexity is to be viewed from various angles: Rowling constructed her morally exemplary plot on an extremely good structure, and her credible characters are presented through an aesthetically nicely woven narrative. The protagonists start from childhood and reach adulthood in seven years, thus the reader witnesses a process, in which not only the characters, but the writer along with the readers also mature. This process of maturity becomes manifest on each level of the series: the enchanting naivety of the first volume turns into a forbidding, often gruesome, thrilling and extremely complicated initiation by the end of the seventh volume. This complexity inspired me to approach the work from seven different angles. I could have applied only one approach with the result of hundreds of pages of analysis, too; yet so as to present the incredible multifacetedness of the series I chose to apply seven ways of analysis for the seven books, after all Rowling’s work does not concentrate on one focus only. The answer to the question why the series is good and thus is worth dealing with can be detected in Henry James’ famous criterion of obligation in relation to a good novel. According to James ‘[t]he only obligation to which in advance we may hold a novel without incurring the accusation of being arbitrary, is that it be interesting.’1 The fact that the series is practically impossible to put down is pure manifestation of its merits. J. K. Rowling’s seven-volume Harry Potter series is the focus of this dissertation. Besides, the series is also in the focus of the attention of an inconceivably vast audience, most probably neither accidentally nor owing to marketing jugglery only, but because it is absolutely fascinating. This audience includes children, young adults and adults alike, among 1

SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS which laymen and scholars, such as university professors from the Department of Literature are to be found. Characteristically, the series is too young/contemporary to be able to be judged without a personal bias. This will, however, fade in the course of time. What remains, without its sensational contemporary success, is its literary value. Its literary value that has to be judged according to its aesthetic assessment is going to be analysed as thoroughly as its cultural aspect. My claim is that Rowling’s series is outstanding in respect to its aesthetic value, and, therefore, I am convinced that it may stand the test of time. The Harry Potter series is a postmodern work whose novelty resides in the method, in which Rowling juxtaposes various literary genres. It can be considered an experimental novel, since the seven different volumes always show new features on the technical side as well. The author also experiments on the notion that by playing with time she creates an atmosphere embracing the entire literary history. Handling time, therefore, offers abundant opportunities for her. If the postmodern also embraces the stream of consciousness technique, the postcolonial literature and metafiction, how should a romance like the Harry Potter series be judged? Northrop Frye claims that from the ironic mode of writing the tendency will go towards myth. The Harry Potter series is more of a myth, rather than a simple romance, the modernised version of the legends of Arthur. What is more, it takes aspects of the postmodern: it is partly a stream of consciousness novel, as the reader is often in Harry’s head; it is also postcolonial, yet placed in Britain, as there are many colours of people, who have more of less significance in the series, yet they are often treated slightly differently; and it is also metafiction, since it is often about book in the book and about the book, also because Rowling sometimes quotes her own books in the series, and because the quill thinks instead of the characters. The merit of the series can be formulated as something that conveys the notion of the best ideas (social, literary, esoteric, linguistic, human, holistically religious without being strictly religious – these aspects comprise the approaches discussed below in “Structure”) presented in the best place (England – a pastiche of traditions and fast-changing ideas) at the best time (for the mere reason that when reading books was becoming a problem for children, they started reading books once again despite disparaging remarks about the work). The other merit of the series derives from the above list. Rowling managed to create a micro-cosmos that is complete from the point of view of all literary considerations. The author created a well-constructed structure that takes up a great number of threads never lost
SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS in the plotline, crafted altogether round characters, and conveyed the most fundamental morals to her audience, such as love, friendship and unity in the most credible way. Such a round image of Rowling’s micro-cosmos sheds light on the idea that the series reifies wholeness achieved in every respect.
AIMS During my research the following question became conceptualised: do the aforementioned merits create, in actual fact, the wholeness that will stand all types of scrutiny and analysis? This dissertation is composed to answer this query. Therefore, Rowling’s sevenvolume series is analysed according to seven critical approaches so that it may be easier to establish the proper literary place of the series. What, in reality, necessitate more approaches of analyses are the length of the whole series, causing in itself an (over)abundance of modes of writing, ideas that the books convey, and implications of a philosophical, cultural and literary nature. Once all seven analyses are carried out, my second aim is to prove the necessity of canonising children’s literature, which always seems to have suffered the neglect of adults.
STRUCTURE Thus, in accordance with the implications above, the following seven approaches are applied in my exposition: 1.
Narrative techniques: the critical approach being used here is purely literary and linguistic highlighting points, such as the devices the author uses, particularities that create Rowling’s singular style, and character analysis predominantly on a linguistic basis. I chose a linguistic analysis for the first book, because Rowling’s individual playful language is her trademark. Rowling’s second merit is her bravado in terms of structure, which she had had to devise in advance and while she was writing the first book, and keeping to it consistently all along.
2.
Literary
traditions:

a
historical/anthropological approach besides being a comparative literary analysis. I chose the literary analysis in connection with the second book, since its correlation with the legends of Arthur is the most conspicuous here.
SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS 3.
Esotericism: the approach commences from the notion of an utmost universality in the world, a universality literature also belongs to. This approach is in perfect accordance with my wholeness theory; thus it forms the fundaments of all the other six approaches. The dense network of symbolism of the third book is the reason for this analysis, although the first and second books also include rich literary symbolism. Thus, all the three books are analysed here.
4.
The psychological approach: having done an analysis of language use and style as regards characters in Approach One, a psychological exploration of characters, divided into two categories, good and bad, forms the core of this approach. The fourth book offers a suitable basis for this analysis, as the evil incarnates here, and the battle between good and bad commences.
5.
The sociological approach: this investigation has examined the characters and groups in their social roles, for which Rowling applies a new genre in her fifth book, that of satire.
6.
The philosophical approach: the sixth chapter focuses on the postmodern mode of presenting man, society and the universe in postmodernist literature and in the Harry Potter books. The postmodern features overwhelm the sixth volume; therefore they are discussed here.
7.
The literary approach along with Northrop Frye: this analysis covering the entire series applies Frye’s five literary modes to discover the literary symbolic layers of the books and their structural solutions. Having encountered the whole series, a comprehensive genre analysis of all seven books is to be presented at the end.
METHOD The first half of my dissertation deals with more generic points, thus my original intention of discussing all the seven books one by one is altered: the first three chapters encompass more books of the series, those that contain the given points in question. I had to present all the features in the first half of my work, therefore as I was proceeding in my dissertation fewer and fewer points referred to the subsequent volumes. In the second part the presentation of the changes, which all contributed to the complexity of the series, was sufficient. As I have already put it, change constitutes the essence of the series. The latter four
SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS chapters concentrate predominantly on the individual books which contain details relevant for those particular aspects of analysis; this part, therefore, is shorter.
CONCLUSION The Harry Potter books analysed from any angle are also part of the whole, thus the analyses themselves must necessarily be connected, interwoven, inter-referential and pointing towards the same answer, the one that unravels about universalities and wholeness. I have tried to present as well as achieve this throughout my work. Nevertheless, I was confined within 250 pages to present the multifaceted nature of such a long saga. Therefore, quite naturally, I could but point to the most relevant points and issues without offering completely exhaustive analyses. Yet, the concept of wholeness eases my plight here, since interrelatedness offers answers to further questions as well. Finally, the effect of the series and hence its result should be pointed out. The impact the series has made on the young generation is tremendous. Rowling’s child audience has commenced an almost unprecedented trend of interactivity, both with the author and her work. The Internet facilitates this process predominantly, where children can probe behind the scenes of the volumes. Moreover, they have also started writing their own versions of the books, and most significantly, a potential eighth volume. The fate of the series has not been closed yet; it is, therefore, an open work of art, a postmodern writerly text – to be taken literally – open for the creative reader. It has a presence primarily besides its short, yet bustling past; what is even more momentous is its potential future, as it has accelerated the urge of creation in the young mind.

A mű szubjektív megítélése azonban idővel kopni fog, 2

SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS és szenzációs sikerén túl valódi irodalmi értéke marad az utókorra. A Harry Potter sorozat olyan posztmodern alkotás, melynek újszerűsége éppen abban rejlik, ahogyan egymás mellé helyezi a regényírás számos különféle műfaját. Rowling mikrokozmoszának integritása minden szempontból hitelesen rámutat a teljességre.
SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS
CÉLOK Kutatásaim során a következő kérdés fogalmazódott meg: a fentebb felsorolt érdemek valóban olyan teljességet és irodalmi szempontból olyan komplexitást alkotnak a műben, melyek képesek kiállni elemzéseim próbáját? Ennek megválaszolása alkotja a disszertációm vázát.
A DOLGOZAT FELÉPÍTÉSE A fent felsorolt vonatkozásokkal megegyezve a következő hét megközelítést alkalmazom munkámban: 1. Narratív technikák: a kritikai megközelítés, melyet itt használok, tisztán nyelvi és nyelvészeti, olyan jellegzetességekre mutatva rá, mint az írónő eszköztára, Rowling egyedi stílusának jegyei, valamint jellemábrázolása nyelvi szempontból. Az első könyvhöz azért választottam nyelvi elemzést, mert Rowling sajátosan játékos nyelvezete képezi leginkább védjegyét. Másik fő érdeme, a szerkesztés bravúrjai, melyet itt az első könyv megírásakor kellett kitalálnia és a hét könyvön konzekvensen végigvinnie. 2.
SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS teljességről alkotott alapkoncepciómmal. Ezért ebben a fejezetben mind a három könyv elemzésre került. 4. 6. A filozófiai megközelítés: a hatodik fejezet a jellemábrázolás, a társadalom és az univerzum posztmodern megközelítésére fókuszál a posztmodern irodalomban és a Harry Potter sorozatban. A hatodik könyv egyre inkább rámutat a sorozat posztmodern mivoltára, tehát ennek filozófiai elemzése itt vált indokolttá. 7.
A dolgozat első felében minden jellemzőt be kellett mutatnom, tehát ahogyan haladtam előre a dolgozatban természetszerűen egyre kevesebb pont vonatkozott a további könyvekre. A második felében elég volt a változásokat bemutatni, amelyek mind hozzátettek a mű komplexitásához. Mind már említettem a változás adja a mű lényegét. Ennek megfelelően a tanulmány második fele rövidebb.
SZIRBIK DOROTTYA - CRITICAL APPROACHES TO J. K. ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER SERIES: SEVEN WAYS OF ANALYSIS
ÖSSZEGZÉS A Harry Potter könyveket bármilyen szemszögből vizsgáljuk, azok részei az egésznek,
ezért
maguk
az
elemzések
szükségszerűen
összefonódnak,
mindegyik
Mivel 250 oldalba korlátozva kellett bemutatnom ennek a rendkívül nagy lélegzetű műnek a sokrétűségét, természetesen csak a legrelevánsabb pontok elemzésére kerülhetett sor.
