Symposium PROCEEDINGS POSTERS Mooi bedacht, nuttig toegepast De la bonne idée à la réalisation pratique
28 / 11 / 2007 KMS Brussel – ERM Bruxelles

The structural safety of vaulted structures is directly related to their geometry and the analyses results strongly depend on the accuracy in which this geometry can be measured in practice. To obtain an accurate estimate of the geometry of the vaults of the main nave, 3D-laserscanning is performed. Focus is on: gathering the point-clouds, 3D-modelling, structural analysis calculating thrust lines, the added value of the methodology, its applicability and cost-effectiveness.

Air cleaning by TiO2 coatings on cementitious materials By developing a titanium dioxide coating on surfaces of cement based materials, photocatalytic action can be created. This could make the materials at the same time self- and aircleaning. Fig. 1 SEM micrographs of TiO2 coatings on cementitious materials
A dip-coating technology based on a suspension of titanium dioxide and ethanol has been developed (Fig. 1). In this work, using four different cementitious materials (AAC, CB, CW and CS) and toluene as a pollutant model, the air cleaning potential has been evaluated in a flat-plate photoreactor (Fig. 2).

Fig. 2 Flate-plate photoreactor
The toluene removal from air was evaluated at ambient conditions, i.e. at a temperature T = 25.0 ± 0.1°C, an air relative humidity (RH) of 41 ± 6%, and a toluene inlet concentration [TOL]IN = 12.3 ± 1.2 ppmv. As an illustration of a typical experiment, Figure 3 shows the TOL inlet and outlet concentrations measured as a function of time before, during and after near-UV irradiation of the dip-coated sample CB. A summary of results obtained with all investigated cementitious materials is given in Table 1.

Fig. 3 Gas-phase TOL outlet (Ο) and intlet (▪) concentrations before, during and after near-UV irradiation of dip-coated CB. The dotted lines indicate the start and end of the UV illumination.
High removal efficiencies (from 41% to 86%) were obtained with the dip-coated samples. This represents a promising result concerning the outdoor air purification potential of cementitious materials enriched with TiO2 using the developed dip-coating technology. The technique could be applied in buildings and concrete structures situated in confined spaces such as canyon streets in densely populated cities where pollution comes from vehicles exhaust and/or industrial sources.

In architectuur denkt men daarbij direct aan toegankelijkheid.

Continuous beams strengthened with externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) Structures may need to be strengthened for many different reasons, such as change in function and durability issues. There are different strengthening techniques available, among which the use of FRP EBR (Fibre Reinforced Polymer - Externally Bonded Reinforcement). Herewith, advanced continuous fibre based composites are glued in the tension zone of concrete beams. The use of FRP EBR will increase the capacity of the member, but additional mechanisms of failure may govern the ultimate state, among which bond failure between the laminate and the concrete. Concerning these debonding mechanisms four different types of debonding can be distinguished:
Fig. 1: Test on strengthened continuous beam
Fig. 2: Debonding of FRP laminate at the mid-support

- Debonding by crack bridging (Fig. 2) - Debonding by force transfer - Debonding by limited anchorage length - Debonding by end shear failure
The bending capacity of concrete members can be increased by applying FRP EBR. Though the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened in flexure with FRP EBR has been extensively investigated for isostatic beams, limited information on the behaviour of FRP strengthened continuous (hyperstatic) beams is available. In the following, some differences between strengthened continuous beams and the strengthening of isostatic beams are discussed.arial

Difference 2
Difference 3
Continuous beams, even if strengthened with FRP EBR, are characterized by a non-linear moment redistribution (Fig. 3). This non-linear relationship between acting load and internal moment is due to the variable stiffness along the length of the beam.
For continuous beams the moment line has opposite signs. As a result, the compression zones in the spans are situated at the top of the beam, at the mid-support the compression zone is situated at the soffit of the beam (shaded zones in Fig. 4). This allows to anchor the CFRP laminates in the compression zones, which results in avoiding two out of the four different debonding mechanisms: debonding by a limited anchorage length and debonding by end shear failure (concrete rip-off).
Fig. 5 gives the effect of the moment redistribution on the different debonding mechanisms in comparison with the linear elastic theory. Herewith it can be noticed that differences can be found of 46 % later debonding (debonding by restricted anchorage length in case A) until 26 % earlier debonding (debonding by restricted anchorage length in case B).

Creative concrete constructions by the use of textiles as flexible formwork or as functional framework liner Municipal funeral hall by Ito in Kagamihara, Japan
Inspired by the trends towards rounded, organic shapes1 and the use of tensile structures2, the BBRI, VUB-ARCH and Centexbel have set up a project to investigate the use of textiles as formwork or formwork liner. Most pioneering work in this field was done by Prof. West (University of Manitoba, Canada) on columns, panels and trusses created with textile formwork.3-4 Also the work by Ir. Pronk (TU Eindhoven, the Netherlands) is well worth mentioning.5 Several textile products for concrete formwork exist for example for foundations6, matresses (e.g. as dike reinforcement)7 or columns8.

Demand for organic, rounded shapes in modern architecture is high, but so is the price of traditional formwork needed for such constructions. In a research project joining architects and the construction and textile industry, the possibilities of using textile materials as flexible formwork or as a functional formwork liner e.g. for the transfer of textures are being investigated and the currently obtained results are presented.

Fig. 3: Kinematische connector

…. in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 8 october 2005 it was made clear that in the reconstruction stage humanitarian projects should not only concentrate on the “soft” aspects (assessments, training, education) but also on the “hard” aspects (machinery, tools,…). It is of no use to learn or demonstrate something which cannot be applied afterwards due to lack of practical tools and/or equipment…

Innovative vegetal-based products for road construction Vegecol © Vegecol© is an innovative new binder for asphalt. It contains renewable raw materials from agricultural origin only and can, without any problem, replace classical bitumen. It is translucent and can thus be used when the natural aspect of the paving is important. It can also easily be pigmented to obtain specific colors. It has been used for the first time in Belgium on a cycle track in Limburg between Beringen and Hechtel-Eksel in august 2007. High-end architectural applications, where colors and patterns are important (city-centers, building access roads, gardens…), are very easy to realize. Vegecol© based asphalt is manufactured at lower temperatures (130°C) and thus also saves energy and greenhouse gases.
Every year public works consume millions of tonnes of bitumen, mainly on the roads. To offer an alternative to these products, which mainly stem from petrochemistry, and to anticipate changes in regulations, Colas has launched a research and development programme on bio-products.
www.colas.be & www.colas-cst.com Research on bio-products for roadworks Colas launched several years ago a global research and development project on bio-products. Its objective is to develop, manufacture and market products for road and road-related industries, made from natural raw materials that are renewable and have no harmful effects on humans. These works are part of Colas group's policy that endeavours to completely eliminate raw materials that have a hazard label from the composition of its products. This project was inspired by the principles of green chemistry, since it aims to replace fossil-based raw materials and reduce, or eliminate the use or formation of hazardous substances in the design, production and use of chemical products. The objective is also to reduce energy losses whilst improving the performance of the finished products.

Illustration : le Rock Strength Device (RSD) Insert here a picture (or more pictures) of minimum 600 dots per inch, in view of a proper enlargement from the original A4 format to the A0 format of the poster
Insert here a picture (or more pictures) of minimum 600 dots per inch, in view of a proper enlargement from the original A4 format to the A0 format of the poster

Microbial carbonate precipitation (biodeposition) has been proposed as a novel and environmentally friendly strategy for the protection and remediation of stone and mortar. Biodeposition technologies have already been used for the consolidation of sand columns, for repair of limestone monuments and to a smaller extent for remediation of cracks in concrete. Within the framework of this research, possible applications of biodeposition on cementitious materials were investigated. Biodeposition as a surface treatment resulted in an increased durability of mortar and concrete specimens. Furthermore, biodeposition shows the potential to seal cracks in concrete. Current research focuses on the development of a repair mortar for conservation purposes based upon microbial carbonate precipitation

STRAIN RATE DEPENDENT CONSTITUTIVE LAWS FOR CONCRETE AND STEEL The response of the proposed 1D model for concrete in compression is presented in Figure 1 for different strain rates. These strain rate effects are obtained with a rate dependent Young modulus and a Perzyna viscoplastic model. A multi-surface yield criterion allows for a different response of concrete in tension and in compression. Figure 2 depicts the dynamic strength enhancement in compression for concrete vs. the strain rate. The dynamic increase factors (DIF) obtained are considered to be in good agreement with the CEB recommendations.

Progressive Collapse (PC) is a dynamic phenomenon involving high strain rates in the building structural members. This work aims at developing a numerical tool for the PC simulation of reinforced concrete structures, so that prescriptive rules for the design of buildings against PC can be extracted. STRUCTURAL MODELLING WITH MULTIFIBRE BEAM ELEMENTS The introduction of the 1D constitutive laws (σ-ε relations) for concrete and steel in a multi-fibre beam model will provide strain rate dependent relations between the generalized stresses (N,M) and generalized strains (ε,χ), to be applied at each integration point in a FEM calculation. Figure 3 shows the multi-fibre beam used for the modelling of structural RC elements: first, the axial strain is evaluated at each fibre with the information from the macroscopic level (ε and χ from the FEM calculation). Then the microscopic stresses (axial stresses for each fibre) are obtained by applying the 1D constitutive laws. Finally the macroscopic stresses (N,M) are evaluated by integrating the microscopic stresses through the sectional area of the beam. The rate dependent N-ε and M-χ relations obtained for a specific RC section (Figure 4) can be observed in Figures 5 and 6 respectively.

Multi Use Construction Kit (MUC) ArcelorMittal SSDC (Steel design for construction department) in association with the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, dept. MeMC) designed a construction kit for international relief missions and local temporary housing. The objective is to create a multi use construction kit which is at the same time, adaptable, easy to erect and to dismantle, fully compacted in transport phase and resistant in site configurations. The kit must be able to answer local needs and extreme weather conditions.
The presented solution is based on a generating system that enables the creation of a catalogue of basic elements, adaptable and compatible to each other. The MUC is not merely a modular construction but a full 3dimensional Meccano. The generating system allows a 3D formal and dimensional compatibility between all basic elements.
www.arcelormittal.com; wwwir.vub.ac.be\memc From our point of view, a construction system has to answer the change of needs (due to contingent or temporary factors); lack of adaptability is one of the biggest problems of nowadays construction. We designed a real scale Meccano, with elements that can easily change of position and function (to answer at the different on site requirements) and can easily be dismantled, adjusted and re-used (on site) in case of damage. The transport cost is in most cases the highest cost to take into account in international relief missions. In this design basic elements for five equivalent 20 ft units are compacted in one ISO 20ft transport container. The MUC kit is composed by 4 types of basic elements: bearing frames, horizontal profiles, sandwich panels and dry connections. A bearing frame is not more than a combination of profiles, corners and dry connections.

(1) Protection of concrete against biogenic sulfuric acid attack (BSA)
N. De Belie2 W. Verstraete1
BSA is the result of the sulfur cycle that occurs in sewer networks, and which is driven by the metabolic action of a variety of micro-organisms such as Thiobacillus. In situ failure of laboratory tested coatings against BSA has lead to new approaches that affect microbial activity. The effectiveness of an antimicrobial concrete containing inorganic or organic biocidal compounds was investigated. While the inorganic biocidal compounds showed some inhibitory effects towards Thiobacillus in small scale tests, no improved performance could be obtained from large scale accelerated corrosion tests.

RC Modeler • Works
Dr. J.P. Rammant, SCIA
New engineering tasks for detailing concrete structures The “engineering modeler” achieves a productivity jump: assembling information in 3D (or even 4D if time is accounted in building phases) leads to a consistent virtual structural model. It is fed through parametric templates (or structural member families), by reading data from suppliers (such as architects) in standardized formats (as IFC), or by interactive input. By completing a 3D model, the derived 2D drawings and views are generated automatically.
The breakthrough of B.I.M. (Building Information Modeling) is changing the processes in which engineering design & detailing tasks are performed in construction. A new technology is presented for collaborative design & detailing of structures, made in reinforced concrete (in-situ or precast). An innovative technique has been developed, named roundtrip engineering.
www.scia-online.com Changes to the model are reflected in the associated drawings & material lists. The engineering work is focused on adding professional content (e.g. designed reinforcement steel bars or meshes) in conformity with applications software, capable of converting domain knowledge as building codes. “Constructibility” is assured through automated checks and revisions. Roundtrip Engineering, which is realized through a software technology where the structural model is aligned with an analysis model, puts the engineer at the center of the information management. Decisions on how to construct (or detail) are determining for the cost: design to construct & design to cost are inn. Research & development proceeds to enhance the modeling process with optimization algorithms to automate the design refinement work.

The theorem of reciprocity exists in many forms and is therefore applied in a wide range of scientific fields. Building acoustics relates to air-borne and structure-borne sound transmission. A reciprocity relationship exists between the sound radiation and the vibration response of a structure. Based on this, a relation between air-borne and structure-borne sound insulation can also be derived. Examples and case studies show that these relationships can be useful instruments for

A deviation from the sum formula gives a useful indication for leakage, air-borne or structure-borne flanking transmission. Unknown forces can be determined through simple measurements and by manipulating the relationship between radiation and response. This relationship can also be used for the assessment of structure-borne noise.

Schade-accumulatie in historische metselwerkstructuren

Structural and constructional optimisation of L. Vantomme, S. too often results in uneconomical structures that exhibit poor structural quality.
Figure 1: physical form finding of station roof, F. Otto, Stuttgart
New and improved structural and constructability algorithms are developed, based on the ‘dynamic relaxation’ (DR) method. Combining this form finding and optimisation software with integrated geometric 3D-modelling (using CAD, Catia, etc.), will provide the designer with a practical tool for the creation, structural optimisation, analysis and rationalisation of complex curved forms.
http://wwwtw.vub.ac.be/MeMC
This research project distinguishes between three different structural optimisation and constructability optimisation approaches. The first approach develops a purely optimal structural form with self-developed software (figure 2a ; 3). This software simulates physical models such as the ones of A. Gaudi and of F. Otto (figure 1). The second method also develops an optimal structural shape but takes into account certain boundary conditions (height or span restriction, force transfer onto adjacent structures) (figure 2b ; 4). In the most complex case the designer proposes a free form. For this case an integrated approach is developed that imbues complex curved structures, developed with 3D geometric modelling tools, with structural and constructability quality (figure 2c ; 5). In this case a partial optimisation of the use of material is obtained: the final form will acquire more material than if a purely structural form was developed, but it will respect the formal choices made by the designer in the most optimal way.

Due to its alkaline nature, concrete is susceptible to acid attack which causes the components of the cement paste to decompose. Sulphuric acid, which causes a combination of sulfate and acid attack, reacts with the CH in the concrete and forms gypsum. Ettringite is formed by the reaction between this secondary gypsum and tri calcium aluminate (C3A). The formation of ettringite is associated with an important increase in volume due to the amount of water molecules.

Initial mass increase due to the formation of expansive products. During the initial deterioration those products can fill up voids and can enhance the strength. When more expansive products are formed micro cracks develop, the strength decreases and the concrete deteriorates. Concrete with less space for expansion in the microstructure appears to suffer more from the sulphuric acid attack up to 6 weeks of immersion.

BETONTECHNOLOGISCHE MODELLEN
Mix design – initial type testing
Betoncentrale Blomme Betoncentrale Van Pelt

Toegepast onderzoeksproject Rapid Prototyping

Ultrasonic follow-up of the hardening behaviour of concrete Within the framework of the research on the influence of fillers and additives in selfcompacting concrete on the micro-crackformation and the durability behavior, ultrasonic techniques can be used to follow the formation of the microstructure and elastic properties of the hardening concrete. The wave propagation velocity, as well as the frequency-dependent damping properties of the fresh mixture depend on the varying elastic properties of the concrete’s components and on the gradual formation of the concrete’s microstructure during setting and hardening (Figure 2).
Figure 1. The measuring setup: DAQ-pc, concrete container with testers and the ultrasonic pulser-receiver
The development of the microstructure of a fresh concrete can give a new insight in the durability properties of the hardened material. The gradual formation of this microstructure, as well as the developing elastic properties can be monitored by the continuous ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement of the fresh, hardening concrete mix. A experimental setup was developed to perform these tests. Bram Desmet, Civil and Materials Engineering Department of the Royal Military School

A specific setup (Figure 1) based on a standard lowfrequency ultrasonic tester and a self-designed concrete container was built to allow the continuous throughtransmission measurements. The future work will be focused on optimizing the setup for the testing of larger specimens, thus allowing the testing of the actual concrete instead of being restricted to mortar or cement paste samples. Furthermore, the ultrasonic measurements will be combined with a follow-up of the heat production during the hydration process. This research is a cooperation between the Civil and Materials Engineering Department of the Royal Military School, the Labo Magnel of the Universiteit Gent and the Department of Building Materials of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and is funded by the FWO-Flanders.
Verticaal toepassen! Fig 1
Trillingsvrij!
