•
175
Nothin' On You dan Another Tattoo

Gaya Bahasa Figuratif (Figurative Language)

Abstract The research explains about the use of stylistics as an impact towards style and identity from parodies by "Weird Al" Yankovic. The research method which is being used is library research where the writer gathered the data from the related theories and use it as the base for doing the research. Analysis was done by cutting lyrics from parodies into several parts and stylistics theories were applied; that consist of the use of style which become "Weird Al" Yankovic's signature on his parodies and the use of figurative language. The result of the studies are explanations of words which are found in the lyrics from parodies and contained with style and figurative language. It is concluded that the frequently theories were ambiguities while the seldom emerge theories is rhymes, and the appliance of stylistics theories which are styles and linguistic feature which is the figurative language. Styles are consisted of ambiguity, rhyme, stereotype, and video copy, while figurative languages are consisted of allusion, hyperbole, metaphor, pun, and sarcasm. Keywords: Stylistics, parody, style, figurative language
BACKGROUND OF STUDY Background of this academic research is stylistics theory from parodies which are made and sung by "Weird Al" Yankovic that is always supported by some scenes from the music videos which are also made by "Weird Al" Yankovic. The writer interested in creativity of the maker of the song and video, namely "Weird Al" Yankovic, and intends to examine more deeply about the application of the theories of literature contained in each of the works of "Weird Al" Yankovic. Literature review in writing this paper is previous research carried out by Octayusnita (2007) and Santoso (2007), which uses
184
almost the same theory, to explain the problem, methods, and results of research that has been done. Research by the author are his own research that has more value than the current and previous studies. This research review stylistics existence which is then divided into two parts by the writer into two categories; the use of styles and the use of figurative languages. The use of styles are then subdivided into five parts; parody, ambiguity, rhyme, stereotype, and video copy. Meanwhile, the use of figurative languages are divided into five parts; allusion, hyperbole, metaphor, puns, and sarcasm. Of the division is then collected and described in general in the conclusion to fulfill the purpose of research in the form to review the use of style and figurative languages from the meaning behind the lyrics in parodies by "Weird Al" Yankovic.
RESEARCH METHOD In this study, the research method begins by determining parodies of "Weird Al" Yankovic who have chosen to be studied by the writer. The songs are selected based on the level of fame from albums where the songs are found. The writer collected data from internet survey about the famous albums of "Weird Al" Yankovic which earned position in the Billboard charts worldwide. After gaining one best compilation album and two best studio albums of "Weird Al" Yankovic, the writer then take two parodies from each of the albums that have been selected. The lyrics and then being searched through the official website of "Weird Al" Yankovic, then divided into several sections to begin the analysis. The study was conducted by observing the lyrics of the parodies and made record of key points related to the theories to be applied. Once collected, all important points are then matched with existing theories. After that research continues to determine theories that can be taken in accordance with the major theories, which is stylistics. Based on the data from the parodies analysis, it is concluded that the application of stylistics in literature by "Weird Al" Yankovic can be divided into two parts, namely the use of styles and the use of figurative languages. After that, the writer divided the use of styles into 5 sections in the form of parody, ambiguity, rhyme, stereotype, and video copy. Then divide the use of figurative languages into allusion, hyperbole, metaphor, puns, and sarcasm. From the division of the theory, the writer divided the portions of the lyrics that have been associated and contains related theories, into a theoretical framework that has been described. In the end, research is done by collecting relevant data as for supporting the proof of the statement writer in the analysis.
185
ANALYSIS Based on the research conducted, the writer then summed up the results and discussion of the analysis as follows: Stylistics is a combination of learning about the style and linguistic features in it. As for the overall parody made by "Weird Al" Yankovic, stylistics analysis is divided into six parts which are parody, ambiguity, the use of figurative language, rhyme, stereotype, and video copy creation. In the use of figurative languages, the authors then divided again into five categories which are allusion, hyperbole, metaphor, puns, and sarcasm. Results of this analysis is the overall linkage in the category of parody by "Weird Al" Yankovic. From 6 songs that have been chosen; Another Tattoo, Amish Paradise, Foil, Perform This Way, White and Nerdy, and the Word Crimes, obtained the following results:
• Parody Parody is the work that will derail use of the style of the author, artist, or genre by exaggerating that in this case roles as a canvas for "Weird Al" Yankovic to pour his creativity. Parodies of "Weird Al" Yankovic always maintain originality of the original song, but also retain his own style that makes a contrast meaning of every parody he makes. As can be seen from the writer's selection of the parodies, Another Tattoo has a contrast meaning in one's life satisfaction which in this song "Weird Al" Yankovic as a maniac tattoos, never satisfied with his tattoo collections and wants to continue to add more tattoos on his body. This song is directly in contrast with the original song where the song (Nothin 'on You) tells the life of a man who has been satisfied with only one woman in his life no matter how many women he had met in life. In Amish Paradise, "Weird Al" Yankovic tells the life of the Amish are straight and based on bible in doing all of their actions which in this case directly contrasts with life of gangsters in its original song, Gangsta's Paradise where a gangster is usually associated with bad things in deed.
186
The meaning is almost the same content in song White and Nerdy which is against the original song, Ridin 'Dirty. White and Nerdy tells about the lives of white people who are usually cited conservative and too straight to be equated with those blacks whose life is hard and always considered bad in the eyes of society as stated in Ridin 'Dirty. In Foil, "Weird Al" Yankovic invites us to imagine against the controversial theory that has not been solved until this day while in his original song, Royal, the singer invites us to imagine in a dream for being able to enjoy the things that we cannot achieve in real life. On the next song, which is Perform This Way, tells us the story of how one can express himself and situate where other people should be able to accept performance of the other person as a human right. This song is directly in contrast with the original song Born This Way, which invites listeners to be able to accept themselves based on the way they born. The next song is Word Crimes, which tells us about the existence of "Weird Al" Yankovic who would like to invite everyone to get rid of all the carelessness in applying Proper English where we often see an error in the use of English in the form of words and sentence in structure to the use of idioms. The song was then compared the contrast with his original song, Blurred Lines, where the song is about the existence of the singer who wants to reveal all the hidden personality of the woman who is considered has natural instinct and dignity (which is also considered to have a dark side in her life). • Ambiguity Ambiguity is one of the characteristic of "Weird Al" Yankovic in the manufacturing his parodies. He uses words and phrases that can be interpreted in multiple meanings and allow viewers and listeners to assume their own opinion on the meaning of words and phrases which are mentioned. The application of ambiguity comes in figurative, allusion, as well as excerpts from some famous phrase. • Rhymes Rhymes are another hallmark of the parodies that are created by "Weird Al" Yankovic. The use of rhyme makes the works of "Weird Al" Yankovic sounds more interesting and well composed. While using rhymes, "Weird Al" Yankovic doesn't follow the whole rhymes of original songs. Rhymes copying done by "Weird Al" Yankovic for his lyrics as well but only on the line who needs to be emphasized as a reminder of the original singer of the song and parody or the song itself. Through this study, the writer found 5 rhymes that are used by "Weird Al" Yankovic in the parody which are Exact Rime, Slant Rime, Rime Masculine, Feminine and Rime which are then presented in the form of parts of the lyrics with a marked application.
• Stereotype Based on the results that are obtained, stereotypes found in parodies of "Weird Al" Yankovic are closely related with sarcasm. "Weird Al" Yankovic is not just stereotyping a group in a whole but also habit, personality, lifestyle, and the area or neighborhood where the group stayed. In Another Tattoo, we can see that the "Weird Al" Yankovic stereotype of people who had tattoos on his body or a maniac tattoos where the tattoo is the symbol for trigger bad assumptions from society. On the next song, Amish Paradise, "Weird Al" Yankovic stereotypes the life of the Amish who always cling to religious
187
teachings and always live in harmony with one another. Not only that, "Weird Al" Yankovic also describes the habits of the Amish who balked at the modern technology that is considered to have bad impact for life. In Foil, "Weird Al" Yankovic stereotypes people who believe in the controversial theory that has not been solved to this day such as for example the presence of aliens in outer space. "Weird Al" Yankovic illustrates that those who believe it will do the things that can be considered peculiar by people who do not believe in the truth of the controversial theory as an example; made of aluminum foil hat to block the mind-reading rays used by aliens and is believed to be one of the tools to gather information. On the next song Perform This Way, "Weird Al" Yankovic stereotypes phenomenal artist that is often associated with the uniqueness and peculiarities in the way of dressing which is Lady Gaga. In this song, "Weird Al" Yankovic stereotypes people's point of view towards Lady Gaga through the way she expressed herself who loves art. Then on the next song, White and Nerdy, "Weird Al" Yankovic stereotypes the American and British in black African-American's point of view. The point which is highlighted in this song is the life of American who are associated with nerdiness where they can't be grouped with people of African-American which tend to have experience of having a hard life that is reverse to the American and British. In the last song, Word Crimes, "Weird Al" Yankovic stereotypes those American who could not use English properly in structure, words, and grammar. In the end, we could conclude that there are still many people who are American, that don't use their national languages which is English, properly and correctly. • Video Copy Video copy is one of the signature in parodies which are made by the "weird Al" Yankovic. Based on the research conducted, it was found that "Weird Al" Yankovic uses some scenes from the original video parody that put in his video. Here are excerpts from the analysis of video evidence which are being collected from both original video and parody:

Figurative Languages
Figurative languages that are used by "Weird Al" Yankovic are in the form of allusion, hyperbole, pun, metaphor, and sarcasm. Allusion is something spoken or written that remind us of someone or something. In "Weird Al" Yankovic literary works, we could find this figure of speech in the form of famous brand and trademarks, names of artists, citations that are familiar to our ears, fictional characters, and some of the names that we often hear as well. The second is hyperbole which is the way of speaking or writing which makes things sound like an exaggeration. In a collection of "Weird Al" Yankovic parodies that have been chosen, we could find the words and phrases used in the sense of moderation. Its use in the works of "Weird Al" Yankovic, are often found in conjunction with the use of sarcasm figure of speech. The third is a figure of speech metaphor that has the word or phrase used to describe someone or something in a different way from usual, to appreciate that the two objects have the same quality and function as an amplifier of a description. "Weird Al" Yankovic uses the metaphor to hide the meaning of word or phrase that sometimes leads us to our own interpretation in more than one meaning (ambiguity). The fourth figure of speech which is pun. "Weird Al" Yankovic's parodies are where we will find a lot of pun. Playing with words and its meaning are done with the original song as the reference and punning on words and or meanings. Pun can be found in every parody that owned by "Weird Al" Yankovic. Eventually, the last figure of speech used "Weird Al" Yankovic in his work is sarcasm that has a function as a meaningful use of the word 'satire' to make fun on something. The use of sarcasm is looked as an outlined in the use of stereotypes in literary works created by "Weird Al" Yankovic.
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION As stated in the " Introduction" section , finally we got the result in the "Analysis" , so that there is conformity . The authors suggest that future research could focus on the use of other styles or figurative languages that could be found on every parody made by " Weird Al " Yankovic.
