— The former group estimated a selling price and the later group
a buying price. Would the students with coffee cups ask for more? This is exactly what the all-star team of researchers found; the undergrads with cups were “unwilling to sell for less than $5.25,” while their less fortunate peers were “unwilling to pay more than $2.25-$2.75.”

tremendous performance penalty for active trading. Of 66,465 households with accounts at a large discount broker during 1991 to 1996, those that trade most earn an annual return of 11.4 percent, while the market returns 17.9 percent. The average household earns an annual return of 16.4 percent, tilts its common stock investment toward highbeta, small, value stocks, and turns over 75 percent of its portfolio annually.

ANALYSE VAN DE VRAGEN — The amount of questions asked vary. — Most questions deal with the amount of years active
(16%), risk and return (9%) and experience(also 9%). The AFM emphasizes the importance of aftercare by the bank and that the investor still should be made possible to reach his/her goal in case of disappointing results. This can be made possible to adjust the profile of the investor. Only 3 banks ask a question about this possibility. Also a question about asset preservation is merely asked by 3 banks.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIGGER AND SMALLER BANKS Remarkable is that bigger banks - although (because?) they have more smaller investors among their customers - ask more then smaller banks about : a. the size of the capital owned b. the origin of income c. and the height of the present income In general it can be concluded that there are significant differences regarding the amount and the content of the questions submitted to private investors when asked about their risk appetite. This leads to the conclusion that there is no non normative way of ascertaining the risk profile.

Loonen en Van Raay conclude: “Een belegger krijgt dus op basis van zijn antwoorden op de risicovragenlijsten vermogensverdelingen geadviseerd die een grote inconsistentie vertonen”.

The result of an investigation by “Beleggingsmatch.nl” in 2013 among 15 large investment banks over a period of 5 years was that within the profile “offensive” there was a spread of 28% between the most and least successful bank. — In the neutral profile Investment Bank Alex obtained a 15.4% result whereas RABO Bank only 5,9%. The investigators conclude that the results were mainly due to “different risks taken within the same profile”. —
More recent the “Consumentenbond” (The Dutch Consumer’s Union) registered a complaint with the Dutch Minister of Finance Dijsselbloem that “it is not possible for private investors to compare the profiles of banks”. In a survey conducted by the Dutch Financial Time’s (Financieele Dagblad) among 10 different banks it became clear that the differences in the way banks translate the given answers in a profile is enormous. —

INVESTORS Do private investors stick to the outcome of their profile or are they easily tempted to invest outside their given profile? — Provided that profiles are set up with an normative
tool and lead to a comparable profile, which leads to a similar return on investment with different banks: the question is still whether this tool will prohibit especially the vulnerable and less knowledgeable investors, who maybe should be protected against themselves - to act outside the boundaries of their profile.

BEHAVIOR OF INVESTORS — According to various scientific articles private
investors are non-rational actor’s and will respond to risk in a different way. Based on various heuristics and biases they will come to their decisions. — In a test, conducted in the spring of 2014 at the Economic Faculty of the University of Applied Science Amsterdam, 265 private investor were investigated. Their choice of a so called risk profile was established with a questionnaire and divides in a normal distribution as follows: VBA 28 mei 2015

INVESTMENT CHOICE
— Investors were then asked to make a choice of
various investment products, each with information regarding the risk involved, whereas risk was defined as “the chance you might lose your total investment” given in a percentage. — After making this choice out of investment products with a fixed risk /return ratio, it was possible to conclude that the choices could be categorized as follows: VBA 28 mei 2015
