V kategorii III. B. Po loňském úspěchu, kdy Barbora v nižší kategorii v ústředním kole vybojovala skvělé 3. místo, ji čekal velmi nelehký úkol – udržet nebo snad i zvednout laťku.

My jsme se letos zúčastnili kategorie III. A (3.
Báře velmi gratulujeme a přejeme mnoho dalších úspěchů nejen v angličtině. Níže naleznete kompletní výsledky dané kategorie.

Competition in English review What you’re reading right now is my attempt to make at least a slightly objective account of this year’s English competition from the school round trough the national round. The whole “marathon” began on January 20th. We, the contestants and teachers, gathered on that nippy day in the language class J1 at 8 a.m. The competition began and went on smoothly. After a warm welcome speech every contestant was given an answer sheet for the first part, which was listening. When I quickly skimmed through the questions, I discovered that the listening include my very “favorite” type of listening exercise; True/False/Not Stated. However, I somehow managed to get through it and then it was time for me to face the panel of judges, which consisted of 3 of our lovely teachers; Ms. Kubátková, Mrs. Jurenková and Mrs. Sittková. I was to talk about holidays and traveling. I believe I did quite well on that. Then came the last part on the school round for me, which was a picture description and making up a story related to the picture. Despite the fact that my description was far from perfect the judges decided I was good enough to proceed to the following district round. The district round took place at SVČ Klíč. I must praise the attendance and organization of this round. About 15 competitors and the presence of a native speaker were truly pleasant. The listening part was relatively easy and the competition continued with the oral part promptly. When I chose a topic I though what were the odds because I picked traveling and holidays again! After a monolog and a few questions from the judges it was time for me to move on to the picture description part. I think I handled it much better that in the previous round and I guess that my performance was quite persuasive, for I was sent to the next round. The regional round took part in Ostrava at SVČ Ostrčila. After a formal welcome speech the competition started traditionally with a listening. It was surprisingly short and easy. Another surprise was that we could hear the recording only once (normally the competitors are played the recording twice). Then it was time for us competitors to show what we had prepared for the conversation part. My topic for that day was family and friends. Both of the judges were very enquiring and showed an enormous interest in what we were saying so each contestant spoke for about 15 minutes. After that we were put into couples and given a fictional situation in which we were supposed to act properly. Apparently something in what I was saying convinced the judges that I should represent our entire region in the national round in Prague. For me it was a shock. However, Ms. Kubátková greeted me with (and I quote here):” I knew it!” On May 17th I and Ms. Kubátková met at Frýdek-Místek’s railway station and began our journey. It was long and exhausting, none the less we made it, spent the night in a local Hostel and arrived at British Council the following day right on time. The building provided us with very nice environment and after a short presentation the competition itself commenced with a listening. This time the listening part was very demanding. We were given 10 questions which we were supposed to answer the best way we could. It was only one recording but it was 45 minutes long. It was difficult to stay concentrated the whole time. Then we were told the order in which we would compete. I was chosen to be the last person. This gave me and Ms. Kubátková some time to go out and admire the beauty of our capital. After we returned I was to do my best and show why I was sent to represent our region. I have to admit that I was quite nervous and if there hadn’t been for Ms. Kubátková it
would have been a lot worse. Never the less I took a deep breath and entered the examination room. The judges asked me to introduce my self and to tell them a wee bit about my interests. This wee bit took me about 10 minutes and was enough for the judges to make their decision. And then it was time for the final results announcement. The room was filled with excitement and anxiety. Everyone was waiting impatiently. Places were being taken one by one: 14th, 13th.... Then it came down to the final three. I was very nervous. The third place was taken. That was it I could be either second or first. “And the second best English speaker is....” My heart was pounding, I could literally hear it. Please don’t say my name please don’t say it, I was saying to myself. And it worked! I actually won! Neither I nor Ms. Kubátková was capable of talking. I was shivering and it was a heroic act for me to stand up and accept the prizes. At this point I’d like to take a moment and thank a few people; firstly everyone who was involved in organization then all the competitors and last but not least Ms. Kubátková, who was willing to invest her time and energy in me, who supported me and who accompanied me in Prague as my moral support. THANK YOU!
