Příběhy rychtáře Ertena a jeho pomocníků – Případ pašovaného zboží
L
Každou chvíli některá z nich zvedla hlavu a pozorně kontrolovala okolí očima, ušima i čichem. Přesto náhle jedna z nich přestala žvýkat právě ukousnuté sousto a poplašeně zafrkala. Vyvrhnout kořist, zahrabat nepotřebné vnitřnosti a zabalit zbytek do připraveného pytle netrvalo příliš dlouho. Pak zvedl ruku s pytlem. Sestěhování do jednoho příbytku znamenalo u tygrů víc než svatební obřad u lidí. Do města se vrátili společně. Laň odnesli k Tyrii domů a pověsili do spíže.

Sám to věděl více než dobře. „Člověk?!“ zabručel Erten zaskočeně a definitivně odsunul listiny stranou. „Inu, proč ne. Co si o něm myslíš?“ „Možná by nebyl špatný, vypadá celkem zdatně. Fyzicky by na to určitě měl. Mám ho vzít na dvůr a trochu ho vyzkoušet?“ „Nejprve mi ho sem pošli a pak ho třeba půjčíme Tyrii,“ usmál se Erten a Ildarovi se zablesklo v očích. „Jak si přeješ,“ pronesl potměšile a seběhl po schodech dolů, přičemž dveře nechal otevřené. O chvilku později po schodech vyběhl jakýsi mladík. Pokud si Erten pamatoval, nikdy ho ani koutkem oka nezahlédl. „Takže oči a uši ti slouží dobře, dokonce i číst tě naučili. 1

Tady? Tak to jen zírám,“ žasla. „A žije a spí s vlkodlačicí,“ doplnil a usmál se, když sebou Tyria trhla a zastavila se. „To si děláš legraci,“ prohlásila obviňujícím tónem. „Nedělám a pojď ho vyzkoušet,“ odvětil a otevřel dveře na dvůr. Ruen seděl na lavici a trpělivě čekal. „Ruene, Tyria. Tyrio, Ruen,“ představil je krátce. „Tyria tě vyzkouší a pak mi řekne, co si o tobě myslí.“ „Vezmi si hůl,“ řekla tygřice, když si mladíka pečlivě prohlédla. Pak si role vyměnili a on měl napadat ji.

Ildar tě pak odvede do zbrojnice, kde dostaneš dýku, meč, sudlici, kuši a zásobu šípů. S kuší tě hned naučí zacházet. Máme tu několik terčů, takže začneš trénovat ještě dnes. Pak tě odvede do skladiště, kde si vybereš zbroj. „Co to bude tentokrát?“ zabručel Thorth, nyní sedící zvenku u okna, u něhož z druhé strany stáli všichni ostatní.

Příběhy rychtáře Ertena a jeho pomocníků – Případ pašovaného zboží
„Vítej,“ pronesl drak, sotva Erten prošel dveřmi. Pohybem tlapy pak poslal Daetiho pryč a s ním i všechny ostatní. Erten a Raervar osaměli. „Odstranit nepohodlnou osobu? Přimět někoho ke splacení dluhu?“ neodolal Erten příležitosti k sarkasmu. „Mluvím vážně,“ odvětil drak chladně. „Omlouvám se,“ zabručel Erten. „V pořádku,“ mávl drak tlapou a zvedl jeden z mnoha dokumentů ležících kolem něj. „V posledních týdnech jste měli napilno kolem trhů, že?“ „Jistě,“ přisvědčil Erten. „Kapsáři, taškáři, pobertové a vůbec cháska všeho druhu má žně. A to nemluvím o podvodných prodavačích. Ukáží jedno zboží a prodají druhé. „Padělek?“ pronesl Erten zkusmo a potěžkal podezřelý meč. Vezl keramiku. Kameninové nádobí, misky a mísy. Vše uložené v dřevěných bednách vystlaných slámou.“ „Pašovat zbraně do města ještě nikdo nezkusil,“ zabručel Erten. „Víno, jemné látky, koření nebo jantar, to ano. Neuplyne měsíc, aby to někdo nezkusil, a samozřejmě nechytíme každého, protože nemáme dost lidí, abychom u hradeb rozebírali každý vůz.

„To bohužel ano. A nedělej přede mnou hloupého. I když ne moc dobře. Škrábance a vrypy všech možných tvarů a hloubek jej křižovaly hustěji, než rozsypané jehličí lesní půdu. „Celkem to ujde,“ vynesl svůj soud. „Jdeme na rychtu, máme nějakou práci. Co střelba z kuše?“ „Ildar mi to ukázal a pak jsme nějakou dobu spolu stříleli.
„Koření?“ nadhodil Ruen, dychtící zapojit se do kolektivu.
-8-

Vy, lidé, jej hojně používáte v jídlech, abyste jim dodali chuť a, co si budeme namlouvat, zamaskovali případnou pachuť levného masa a podobně. „Ty, Ruene, si vezmi psací potřeby a udělej tabulky. Vozy budeme třídit podle toho, co a kam vezly. Pak to všechno porovnáme. A výkřik. -9-
Příběhy rychtáře Ertena a jeho pomocníků – Případ pašovaného zboží
„Samozřejmě, Ertene,“ ozval se Ruen. „Představila mě svým rodičům i vůdci smečky, k níž náleží a oni nic nenamítali. „My žijeme v tajnostech.“ „Tak abychom to moc neprotahovali,“ skočil jim co nejšetrněji do řeči Erten. „Zyl a Ruen budou sedět společně u jednoho stolu. „Každou branou projely nejméně dvě kopy vozů, a to nemluvíme o pěších prodejcích a kupujících z okolí. Kdyby měli projít všechny náklady, nepustí do města ani polovinu příchozích. „Ty a Kyryl,“ rozhodl.

Většina z nich nosí dlouhé vlasy a mají velmi podobné postavy. Pouze cvičené oko toho, kdo jich několik poznal, dokáže odhalit mírnou změnu proporcí v bocích a trochu delší ocas, což je to jediné, co vzhledově odlišuje draconiánku od jejího mužského protějšku.5 Tahle draconiánka se před Ertenem postavil pěkně zpříma a složila křídla za zády. U pasu jí visela dýka s měšcem a meč. Trup jí chránila lehká zbroj z tvrzené kůže, ruce a nohy chrániče z tenkého a jistě tedy kaleného plechu. Přes boky až pod kolena jí spadala soukenná suknice. Její hlavu zdobila hříva dlouhých a velmi hustých hnědých vlasů, ladících s jejími zelenohnědými šupinami a pár asi stopu dlouhých, dvakrát elegantně prohnutých rohů, tvořících při pohledu zpředu písmeno „V“ s hroty mířícími k nebi. Hned by ji vzal do své družiny. A Erten nechtěl připustit, aby měl Gar lepší družinu nežli on. Vyzkoušela tři meče a vzala si až čtvrtý.
Příběhy rychtáře Ertena a jeho pomocníků – Případ pašovaného zboží
mu dokázat, že ho umí odzbrojit, aniž by jej zranila. Později přibrali ještě Zylae a Illyth musela prokázat své schopnosti v boji proti přesile, stejně jako spolupráci dvou bojovníků proti jednomu soupeři. Poznal několik draconiánů a s většinou z nich spolupracoval. Možná by ti vyhovoval nejvíc, pokud ti nebude vadit procházet oknem.“ „Děkuji, prohlédnu si ho jako první.“ „Zylae tě tu provede. Zbroj a zbraně ve tvém případě nemusíme řešit. „Tak to bychom měli,“ zamnul si Erten ruce a zamířil do své pracovny, aby připravil listiny k podpisu a odpočítal peníze z pokladny. Illyth si skutečně vybrala byt v podkroví a neopomněla vyzkoušet, zda projde oknem. Téměř jej nevnímám!“ „Je to krásný kousek,“ přitakala Illyth.

Není to nic snadného.“ „Chápu,“ zabručel Erten.

V zadní stěně zela dokořán otevřená vrata vedoucí do dvora, kterými do skladu doléhal hluk z dílen. Radost pohledět.“ „Tvá chvála mě hřeje u srdce!“ odvětil trpaslík a jeho výraz přecházel z pýchy do rozpaků, když viděl obdiv v draconiánčiných očích. „Máš můj obdiv,“ přitakal trpaslík a vytáhl meč z truhly. Pak vytáhl ještě jeden a oba podal Illyth. „Prosím, vyzkoušej si je.“ Illyth uchopila obě zbraně a nejprve si je pečlivě prohlédla. Arnumijskou poznala hned.
„To jste tam ty meče vyráběli?“ přivítal ji její nadřízený, když vešla do uličky. Když ho poznal Talter, poznají ho nejspíš i ostatní. Spolu s ním tam stáli Tyria s Kyrylem a pak všichni společně vykročili směrem k nejbližšímu tržišti.
Ten by ho totiž pouze zakousl... -15-
Příběhy rychtáře Ertena a jeho pomocníků – Případ pašovaného zboží
„Moc často ne, naštěstí,“ odpověděl Erten a vykročil dál. „Postupně obejdeme ostatní mečíře a prodejce zbraní. Mnoho jich tu není,“ odpověděl Erten a zahnul do jedné z ulic ústících do náměstí. Unavení a otrávení. To bude tím dlážděním. „Co používáte?“ „Lalis a Traavia vyrábí takový lektvar. „Proč bych ti to neřekla. Nic na tom není. Žila jsem s Ertenem ještě předtím, než přišel do tohoto města. Je to už pár let. 7
Epidemie blech nebyla ve městě nijak neobvyklá. Toulaví psi a všudypřítomné krysy, jich měly více než dost a ochotně se o ně podělili s každým, kdo šel okolo. Alchymisté, bylinkáři a babky kořenářky slavili žně.
To předtím nedělal. Naučil se to až tady, když z něj drak udělal rychtáře.“ „A proč jsi mu svůj zájem nedala nějak znát?“ divil se Kyryl. „Ale dala,“ a znovu si odfrkla. „Ty jsi dlak, chováte se jinak. U tygrů je to tygřice, kdo rozhoduje o vzniku vztahu. Její odmítnutí je nezvratné. Tygr, který je odmítne akceptovat, riskuje zdraví. U divočejších a prudších tygřic i život. Alespoň si ostatní přestanou šeptat, i když teď mají mnohem lepší cíl, a to Zylae a Ruena. Protože opět vyvstal problém, kam usadit nového člena skupiny, seděla prozatím draconiánka na parapetu okna s jedním křídlem do ulice a druhým do místnosti. „Illyth a já jsme zatím obešli mečíře a prodejce zbraní,“ začal tedy s výkladem své práce. -17-
„Bez pádného důvodu nemůžeme vstoupit do dílen, skladů a jiných prostor, než těch určených k prodeji. Jinak na nás vletí cechy.“ „Musíme tedy vymyslet nějaký důvod, abychom se tam dostali,“ pokrčil Erten rameny. „Už jsme nad tím s Kyrylem uvažovali a na nic kloudného jsme nepřišli,“ opáčila Tyria. „Potřebovali bychom něco, co nám otevře všechny dveře, jenže by to nesmělo přitáhnout pozornost,“ navázal Kyryl. „No potěš,“ zabručela a sundala nohy ze stolu. „Abychom šli pozavírat okna, zahnat koně do stájí a uklidit všechno, co by nemuselo zmoknout.“ „Takže pohyb!“ tleskl Erten dlaněmi. „Ildare, vezmi si sebou Vitril a společně zažeňte koně do stájí.

Oba tygři leknutím ztuhli uprostřed kroku, přitiskli uši k hlavám a zakryli si je dlaněmi, aby si ochránili sluch před hrozným hlukem zvenčí. Pootevřeli jeden z vikýřů a podívali se směrem k posvátnému lesu. „No nazdar,“ zabručela Tyria. Těch nejsilnějších, jaké si dokážeš představit,“ představil Erten dva zástupce bohatého panteonu svých duchů a bohů.
Utržené břidličné tašky z hradních střech, došky i šindele z ostatních domů, okenice, pytle, kusy oblečení, které vítr ukradl bohové vědí kde, listí a ulámané větve všech průměrů. Pouze zaryl drápy obou rukou do rámu okna. Polovina střechy hořela a druhá doutnala. Plameny též šlehaly z oken nejvyššího patra domu. Erten chytil Alenia a vytáhl ho z řady. Ostatní ať hasí dál!“ křikl Erten a krčmář okamžitě přisvědčil.

„Musíme vytahat z krčmy všechny zásoby a vybavení. A ti všichni musejí někde bydlet a něco jíst. A vůbec ho nebylo málo. Dole uviděl další bedny a nějaké pytle. Otočil hlavu, aby křikl na krčmáře, zda mají vyklidit i sklep. Medvěd stál přímo za ním. Ertenovi zatančily před očima hvězdičky a pak kolem něj všechno pohaslo. Alenis hodil bezvládné tělo do sklepa a zabouchl poklop. -21-
Příběhy rychtáře Ertena a jeho pomocníků – Případ pašovaného zboží
Nyní se všichni podívali do skladiště. Tyria zadržovala dech a v podřepu rychle kontrolovala skladiště. Hned první ranou mu rozpárala pravou stranu obličeje, vyškrábla oko a rozpárala celý horní pysk. Druhá rána medvědovi roztrhla rameno. Drápy pronikly hluboko do svaloviny a přesekly několik šlach. Jenže Alenis byl medvěd a třebaže strávil v kuchyni mnoho času, nepřišel o všechnu mrštnost, kterou v mládí míval. Třetí Tyriin útok vykryl a rozzuřen bolestí ji ranou své pravice odhodil přes polovinu skladiště. Navzdory šílené bolesti dokázal sebrat síly a překulit se stranou, takže Tyriin meč narazil do podlahy v místě, kde by měl ledviny. Kyryl jí ho s nevraživým výrazem sebral a zasunul si ho zpět do pouzdra u opasku. Strop již hořel a plameny osvětlovaly celou místnost.

„Skoč dolů a podej nám ho,“ řekl Kyryl. Tyria přikývla, sedla si na podlahu, spustila nohy otvorem do sklepa a skočila dolů. Nebylo to příliš hluboko. „Mizíme!“ křikl Kyryl a chytil Ertena pod rameny. Kromě jizvy, boule a bolesti hlavy mu nic moc nebude. Nemusím to ani šít. Jen mu ránu vyčistím a dám mu něco, čím si ji bude čistit, aby se nezanítila. Nějaký čas by neměl nosit přilbu, aby zranění zbytečně nedráždil, ale rozhodně na to neumře.“ „A kdy se probere?“ chtěla vědět Tyria klečící proti němu na jednom koleni vedle Ertenovy hlavy. „Dám mu čichnout tady k tomu váčku,“ zabručel Lym a štrachal v tašvici u pasu. „Mohl by ho probudit.“ Po chvíli vytáhl plátěný váček, zkusmo k němu přičichl a pak jej podržel necelé dva palce od Ertenova čenichu. Raervar budil respekt i jednohlavý. Čtyřhlavá verze budila děs. -23-
„Jaký to má smysl, pokud jsi nic neudělal? Proto nyní pomalu vstal a vstoupil přímo do plamenů. Svými tlapami udusával požár a dračí magií způsobil, že do sebe nasával horko z plamenů. Ty kolem něj rychle slábly a uhasínaly. Kyryl s Kerasem a Tyriou seskočili do sklepení a začali jej prohlížet. Hned pod schody našli dvě olejové lampičky a křesadlo. Vysypal z něj svitek pergamenu, rozvinul jej a přečetl. Pak, aniž by pohnul třeba jen šupinou, vrátil svitek do pouzdra. -24-

„Vynoste všechno ven,“ přikázal. „Prohlédneme to až tady.“ Vyklizení sklepa trvalo delší dobu, a když byl poslední sud nahoře, vydechli si Tyria, Kyryl i Keras úlevou. Svitky ovšem ihned zabavuje Raervar a nikdo z nás do nich nesměl nahlédnout. A Erten měl samozřejmě pravdu. Víno se nikdy neponechávalo bez dozoru. Každý krčmář jej ihned zavíral alespoň do zamčeného skladu, nejlépe pak do sklepa.
Znalé osobě stačilo zatlačit čtyři nenápadné suky a pak odsunout prkno do strany. Tyria nahlédla do skrýše, vnořila do ní ruku a vytáhla pytel střední velikosti. Podala jej jednomu z drakových bojovníků, který ho odnesl svému pánovi. Raervar si jej vzal, položil do levé dlaně a pak ho drápy pravého spáru rozpáral. Opět ji podala stejnému bojovníkovi a ten ji předal Raervarovi. Pečlivě jej očichal a oči mu rudě zaplály. Drak však nedal jinak a museli najít jiný, stejně velký sud a Raervar pak osobně přelil víno z jednoho sudu do druhého. Žádnou tajnou schránku však nenašel. „Všechno zboží se zabavuje,“ řekl Raervar hlasitě a zřetelně, aby mu všichni rozuměli. „Dopravte je na hrad a sním i krčmáře. Bude se zodpovídat z podezření pašeráctví a překupnictví kradeného zboží.“ „To asi nebude to jediné, z čeho se bude zodpovídat,“ zabručela Tyria polohlasně. „Proč myslíš?“ mrkl na ni Kyryl. „Raervar se nějak moc zajímal o všechny nalezené svitky,“ odpověděla. „Nenechal nás do nich nahlédnout. A všechny byly pečlivě ukryté. „To jsme tu už několik let neměli.

Dnes už to ohlídají Raervarovy jednotky a obyvatelé města mají dost svých problémů s vodou v domech, dílnách a stodolách. Tyria pak pečlivě zavřela a zajistila dveře i okna. V hraném nesouhlasu mírně vycenil zuby a pak ji lehce kousl do ramene. Proto měla své vlastní lůžko smotané u zdi pod oknem, aby si ho mohla před spánkem rozvinout do středu podlahy. Blaženě si povzdechla a hleděla do nebe.

Bez varování ji objal a zvedl do náruče. Než stihla cokoli podniknout, zakousl se jí lehce do místa, kde se krk napojuje k ramenům. „Už bych nechtěla znovu procházet město a hledat ty zbylé dva vozy.“ „Byla to spíš náhoda, že začala hořet zrovna ta správná krčma,“ krotil její nadšení Erten. „Bohové nám byli výjimečně příznivě nakloněni,“ přidal se hned Kyryl. „Pokud vám jde o tohle,“ odfoukla Tyria, „tak odpoledne zajdu do posvátného lesa složit oběť všem bohům a duchům bouří.“ „Možná by to nebylo od věci,“ poznamenal Erten. „Včerejší bouřka byla pořádně silná a město z toho vyvázlo velmi lacino. Půjdu s tebou.“ Ostatní dílem souhlasně bručeli, dílem mlčky pokyvovali hlavami a zřejmě přemýšleli úplně stejným způsobem. -28-

„Vyslýchali toho krčmáře a dělali soupis podezřelého zboží,“ odvětil Daeti. Ruch města zde znatelně zeslábl a místo něj slyšeli hukot větru v korunách stromů a zpěv ptáků. Ty nikdo nezabíjel, protože lovily drobné hlodavce, kteří by jinak znehodnotili, případně zcela zničili zásoby jídla. Kromě myší a hadů se trávou pohybovalo několik koček a dvě z nich pozorovaly Ertena a Daetiho s výrazy opatrného zájmu.

Nový vůdce totiž nejprve musel smečku přesvědčit o svých kvalitách a nejeden silný vlk či vlčice měli pocit, že oni by byli mnohem lepšími vůdci. Sám přitom vstoupil do chodby. Možná nyní uvedl Daetiho do nebezpečí. Museli bychom zavřít brány a prověřit naprosto všechny a každého. Ertenovi se hlavou honily myšlenky točící se kolem jediného bodu, proč neposlechl Tyriu a neodešel s ní z města.

„Dobrrrá,“ řekl nakonec drak. „Uzssnávám, žšše je to moc velký úkol a v dnešššních dnech prrrakticky neussskutečnitelný.“ Sklonil pohled k listinám kolem sebe a jednu z nich zvedl. „Jsssou tam jména,“ pokračoval Raervar a podal mu svitek. „V tom případě nemám důvod jejich přijetí nepotvrdit,“ řekl Raervar a natáhl pravý spár. Erten mu do něj vložil smlouvy a na ně položil zápis o včerejším dění v krčmě. Raervar na něj krátce a zběžně pohlédl a bezeslova jej odložil stranou. Pak si naopak velmi pečlivě přečetl smlouvy a potvrzení o převzetí prvního žoldu a listiny podepsal. Illyth sama vlastní meč Arnumijské výroby a nějaký -31-

Občas si přivede nějakou družku, ale moc dlouho mu to nevydrží. Loví ryby pro sebe a několik dalších rodin v okolí. Na trh s nimi nechodí. Má své známé zákazníky zde i na druhém břehu, a to mu stačí.“ „Podle Alenia měl zajišťovat převoz zboží přes řeku,“ zabručel Erten. „Copak to ukrýval v medu?“ „Staví si vlastní úly,“ pokračoval Keras. „Dělá je ze starých kmenů. Vydlabe vnitřek a připraví vletový otvor. Svůj názor změnila až poté, co vstoupila do Ertenovy družiny a několik z nich blíže poznala.

Do Laifu se už nikdo z nich nesměl vrátit.
