Introduction.!
!
This product is a sequel to my Bachelor thesis on the subject of online fashion resale in the Netherlands.! As a continuation of my research, I have chosen to write an article for the online fashion platform ‘Fashion United’. An important conclusion of the conducted empirical and theoretical research was that awareness needs to be raised on sustainable alternatives such as fashion resale. With a written article on the subject going public and reaching about 2200 visitors daily1, this is a worthy opportunity to raise the awareness. !

For the reason that my thesis is rather a conceptual research - not directed to one specific company, but addressing both the consumer ánd the industry - I was searching for a way to be able to address both parties in my end product. Finding a platform such as Fashion United that is addressing fashion professionals, retailers, students, young graduates and anyone interested in fashion business, all at once, makes this feel like a natural match.!

The article will be written for Fashion United NL and is therefore written initially in Dutch, mainly because the research report has been looking primarily at the fashion resale market in the Netherlands. An english translation of the article can be found in the back of this report.!

1.4 My Motivation

Fashion United is a well known platform for fashion professionals who are interested in new developments in their area. If Fashion United would publish an article like this, it has a high probability of reaching the right retailers or entrepreneurs and fashion conscious consumers who would want to know more about this subject.! The platform has published articles on the subject more often (see appendices) and therefore I have concluded there is an interest towards online fashion resale. ! My article can inform these retailers, entrepreneurs or consumers about the current market of online fashion resale and it’s future possibilities. The conducted research will be explained and summarized, as well as threats and recommendations. !

Onze huidige samenleving staat in het teken van consumptie, zo niet overconsumptie. ! Er komt langzamerhand een bewustwording op gang die dit probeert terug te dringen. Zo hebben we de afgelopen jaren een deeleconomie zien ontstaan. Of het nou de economische crisis is geweest die deze beweging aanspoorde of niet, het is gebaseerd op ! concepten als sustainability en cradle to cradle, met als doel om de overconsumptie terug te dringen en ons te richten op de verschuiving van het ontlenen van waarde aan ‘bezit’ naar ‘toegang tot’.!

We delen appartementen, auto’s, gereedschap, etcetera. Waarom niet ook kleding? ! Een van de nieuwste ontwikkelingen op dit gebied in de mode-industrie in Nederland is de kledingbibliotheek. Dit concept blijkt een succesvolle vorm van kleding delen op een verantwoorde en toch snelle manier die ! voldoet aan de eisen van de consument die elk seizoen iets anders draagt.!

Een wat langer bestaand fenomeen is het eenvoudige tweedehands kleding ! concept. Gegevens van het OIS2 tonen aan dat het aantal tweedehands kledingzaken in Amsterdam sinds 2010 wederom is toegenomen. Veel van deze zaken specialiseren zich in vintage kleding (kleding vanaf de jaren 20 tot twintig jaar voor het huidige jaar, dus van de ‘twenties’ tot de ‘nineties’). Hier blijkt veel vraag naar en deze vraag blijft ook groeien. Er ligt bovendien nog een gigantisch aanbod klaar in onze kledingkasten. !

Nederland produceert miljoenen kilo’s aan textielafval ieder jaar. En wat doen we !

hiermee? We hebben simpelweg te veel! Het wordt grotendeels verbrand in verbrandingsovens, met een gigantische CO2-uitstoot, en maar een klein percentage word gerecycled. Vaak wordt nog beweerd dat als een kledingstuk uit verschillende materialen bestaat, het niet uit elkaar te halen is voor recycling of upcycling. Er zijn echter inmiddels ! verschillende technieken uitgevonden die dit wel mogelijk maken. Nog even en het is toegankelijk voor een brede toepassing. ! Maar wat als we deze miljoenen kledingstukken allemaal gewoon nog eens hergebruiken? Een tweede leven schenken. Of een derde leven. Een vierde. Waarom nemen we niet de tijd om na elk seizoen door onze ! kledingkasten te gaan en weg te leggen wat we de hele winter niet hebben gedragen? Of misschien wel meerdere winters.!

Hergebruik dus. Er is echter geen twijfel ! mogelijk, de toekomst is digitaal. Zonder te zeggen dat de fysieke markt langzamerhand zal verdwijnen, is het te voorspellen dat er grote ontwikkelingen blijven komen vanwege de toenemende digitalisering. De online ! kledingmarkt heeft een enorme stijging in omzet en populariteit de afgelopen jaren meegemaakt (cijfers) en dit zal alleen maar verder groeien. ! In de online fashion resale zijn er verschillende modellen: C2C (consumer-to-consumer) en B2C (business-to-consumer) of in ! consignatie. !

C2C functioneert meer als een soort Marktplaats. Het jonge bedrijf United Wardrobe is hier een goed voorbeeld van. Je regelt zelf de verkoop van je items, bepaalt zelf de prijs en stuurt het pakketje zelf op. Maar je bent wel verzekerd van je geld en van de staat

van het product, want voor de 10% commissie die UW vraagt bieden zij deze zekerheid en veiligheid.!

Bij de B2C modellen - of beter gezegd ! C2B2C - gaat het vaak om de bekende ! luxury market places waar Chanel tasjes en Gucci jasjes worden verkocht van het hogere klantsegment aan het lagere segment. Het feit dat high end fashion-merken voor een lagere prijs beschikbaar worden gesteld dan de reguliere prijs is sowieso al vaak een ! succesfactor, mits de items een klassieke uitstraling hebben. Dat door het digitaliseren hiervan het bereik opeens immens vergroot wordt, en daarmee ook de collecties, lijkt een droom voor de modeliefhebber.!

Niet alleen klanten dragen de verantwoordelijkheid over wat er na gebruik met een ! kledingstuk gebeurt, ook de retailer zelf zou betrokken moeten zijn bij dit proces. Die is immers degene die het kledingstuk de wereld in helpt. Waarom zouden niet alle retailers ook een tweedehands ‘bij-zaakje’ hebben? Net als bol.com nu een tweedehands ! boekenplatform heeft, of zoals Asos een Asos Marketplace heeft, zo zou het voor alle retailers standaard een extra vorm van !

klantenbinding kunnen worden, én een ! bijdrage aan de sustainability movement.!

Uit empirisch onderzoek onder 203 ! Nederlandse consumenten blijkt dat voor de meerderheid de belangrijkste stimulans om hun eigen kleding te verkopen is dat zij te veel ongebruikte kleding in de kast hebben hangen, waar zij graag van af willen. Met een gemiddelde van 75 nieuwe kledingstukken per jaar in Nederland, herkennen we dit vast allemaal. We hebben echter niet zo gauw de tijd voor handen om hier iets op een ! verantwoorde manier aan te doen. !

Als iedereen nou eens na elk seizoen een tas zou vullen met ongedragen kleding en deze op laat halen door een resale bedrijf die er alles aan zal doen om jouw kleding een tweede, derde of vierde leven te geven. En dat je daar ook nog eens wat aan verdient? Of wie weet, door een wereldwijd platform met een puntensysteem dat het mogelijk maakt kleding met elkaar te delen, zelfs van die vrouw in L.A. of Barcelona. Het is maar een idee…

! Why online resale is the future." !
In recent years the Netherlands begins to realize increasingly of our over consumption. Our current society is driven by consumption, which causes many to worry about the depletion of the resources of the earth. Gradually people are becoming aware of the effects of over consumption, leading to at a tendency to cut back on it. Thus, we notice the emergence of a “share economy” in recent years. Whether it was the economic crisis that spurred this movement or not, it is based on concepts like sustainability and cradle to cradle, aiming to reduce consumption and to focus on the shift of deriving value ' possession 'to' access'.!

We share apartments, cars, tools, etcetera. Why not clothing?! One of the newest developments in this field in the fashion industry in the Netherlands is the concept of a clothing library. This concept appears to be a successful and responsible one, meeting consumers demand of attaining new clothing lines seasonally with the knowledge that it will be exchanged.! An older phenomenon is the well known secondhand clothing concept. Data from the OIS shows that the number of second-hand clothing shops in Amsterdam has increased again since 2010 . Many of these cases specialize in vintage clothing (clothing from the 20s to twenty years for the current year, so the 'twenties' until the' nineties). This shows high demand and this demand continues to grow. Besides that, there is still an enormous selection ready for a second life dusting away in our wardrobes.!

The Netherlands produce millions of kilos of textile waste each year. We simply have too much! And what do we do with all this waste? It is mostly burned in incinerators, causing massive CO2 emissions, with only a small percentage becoming recycled. It is often claimed that if a garment is made of different 11
materials, it is not suitable for recycling or upcycling. However, there have already been various techniques invented which make this possible.! What if we were to reuse these millions of garments? Imagine giving these garments a second life, or a third life and with luck even a fourth. Why do we not take the time to examine each season through our closets and put away what we have not worn all winter? Without a doubt the future of commerce is digital, this does not mean to say that the physical market will gradually disappear. It is predicted that great things will continue to arise because of an increasing digitization. The online apparel market has seen a huge increase in sales and popularity in recent years and we can only expect its continued growth. !

There are several commerce models for online fashion resale: C2C (consumer-to-consumer) , B2C (business to consumer) or in consignment.!
!
C2C functions more similarly as a marketplace. The young company United Wardrobe is a good example of this model. You arrange the items you want to sell on your own by,uploading pictures, deciding on the price and sending the package. By charging a 10% commision, United Wardrobe can offer certain assurances regarding payment security and garment quality. !
!
In the B2C models - or rather C2B2C - it is often the famous luxury marketplaces where Chanel handbags and Gucci jackets are sold by the higher customer segment to the lower segment. The fact that high-end fashion brands are made available at a lower price than the normal price is in itself a success factor, provided that the items have a classic look. When by digitizing all this it expands its reach immensely, and thus the collections,
this seems like a dream come true for a fashion lover.!

Not only do customers bear responsibility for what happens after using a garment, the retailer should also be involved in this process. The retailer is after all, the one that benefits from the garments in the first instance. Why should not all retailers have a second 'inthing'? Like bol.com now has a used book platform, or as Asos has Asos Marketplace. By doing so retailers can expect another form of customer loyalty while at the same time contributing to the sustainability movement. Empirical research among 203 Dutch consumers shows that for the majority the main incentive to sell their own clothes is that they have lots of unused clothes in the closet. With the average Dutch person buying a

mean of 75 new garments per year, we should expect for this habit to become a more responsible one. ! If after each season everyone would fill a bag with unworn clothes and send them to a resale company we would expect a much better possibility for those garments to go through a second, third or fourth owner. Who knows, maybe through a global platform with a points system that makes it possible to share clothes with each other, even a woman in LA or Barcelona. It's just an idea ...!
