here do you go after making a dozen films that build to immense, bombastic finales in which the fate of the Earth appears ever more doomed? When each Marvel film features an ever grander climax, in which vast objects plummet to Earth, spelling certain doom for the world, only to then be stopped at the last second, the audience becomes inured to it. The set-up may vary a little from film to film, but the ultimate payoff is often eerily similar. Ant-Man found a tongue-in-cheek way around the issue by having (roughly) the same situation play out on literally a micro level. Guardians of the Galaxy got around the issue by treating the whole situation with a frivolous and almost indifferent air, which was surprisingly charming. So where do Marvel go next? Well, you could argue that they’ve gone micro again – but the truth is that they did what so few action extravaganzas do: they made the final act simple, brutal and personal. And it works brilliantly.

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, as dashing as ever) leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps – one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr. in guilt-ridden and aggrieved mode – which makes for an interesting change), who supports government oversight and accountability. Despite the fact that the directors, the Russo brothers, have to juggle a huge cast, the film is clear and focused. Steve, Tony and the Winter Soldier (Steve’s best friend, Bucky) are always

at the heart of the story. They are inextricably linked/entangled with one another, in some instances in ways they don’t even realise. By keeping that focus, and having all the other storylines pivot around them – such as Black Panther’s search for revenge; Spider-Man’s introduction (which is smart, pithy and very funny); a nefarious villain’s scheming; Vision’s attempts to wrestle with who he is – the story never loses its way. What’s particularly impressive is that the film-makers manage to give just about every character their moment in the spotlight. There are, at the very least, a dozen Super Heroes, and they each serve the story and have a clear reason for the side they’ve chosen. And that’s rather remarkable. With each new film I worry less and less about how Marvel will manage to introduce a new and unusual comic-book character to their (fairly) grounded cinematic universe. We’ve had aliens, Norse gods, self-aware A.I., mutated beasts borne out of their host's subconscious, and quite a bit more. Next up: we have a sorcerer with a fancy cape. I, for one, can’t wait.

Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a successful investment banker who struggles to move on after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father-in-law Phil (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew. Vallée makes good use of Gyllenhaal, who easily slips into being a man on the outside looking in. After dark and/or disturbing roles in Nightcrawler, Donnie Darko, The Good Girl and Enemy, Gyllenhaal has covered the gamut of outsiders: whether they be loners, weirdoes or something else entirely. As watchable and engaging as Gyllenhaal is, it’s Judah Lewis who steals the show here. At 14 years of age, he’s preternaturally talented, with an ease in front of the camera that most actors double his age can’t muster. His dynamic with Gyllenhaal is funny, odd and strangely believable. The tentative relationship that slowly develops between Davis and Karen may be what the story pivots around, but it’s the dynamic between Davis and Chris that ends up being the true beating heart of the film.

ollywood has always had an ageism problem. To be anything other than a twentysomething actress is to be an actress on her (slow) way out. You might get a few good parts in your thirties, but you’ll find that every other role you’re offered is that of a mother. When you reach your forties the parts will get really thin on the ground – unless you’re a household name. So let’s take a moment to marvel at Susan Sarandon, who turns 70 this year, and who in her latest film, The Meddler, shows herself to be as capable, funny and (given the nature of the part, surprisingly) charming as ever. The film follows Marnie Minervini (Susan Sarandon), a recent widow, who moves from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter Lori (played brilliantly by Rose Byrne, who makes Lori and all her foibles feel lived-in and believable). Armed with an iPhone and a full bank account, Marnie sets out to make friends, find her purpose, and possibly open up to someone new. In the early going, as we see Marnie from her daughter’s point of view, she is exhausting, irksome and very much a busybody. Her habit of "meddling" never abates, but how we feel about it most certainly does. This is a smartly written character piece that examines an older woman at an unusual time in her life. Lorene Scafaria’s film is very much a low-key delight. There’s nothing showy about the direction or cinematography; the writing, although funny, is grounded and well observed; and the performances, which could easily be broad and overplayed, are subtle and deftly handled. he "fish out of water" formula is a common theme in movies. A begrudged character, out of their depth, usually results in satisfying comedy, empathy and adventure. These three things are very much in evidence in Tom Hanks’ latest caper, as audiences are given numerous opportunities to cheer and jeer at the on-screen, homesick follies. A Hologram for the King follows a failed American businessman (Hanks) looking to recoup his losses by travelling to Saudi Arabia and selling his big idea to a wealthy monarch. He attempts to adjust to the customs of this foreign country, but ends up overwhelmed by the unusual traditions and begins a journey of self-discovery. The culture clash on display is rather similar to that in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. In fact, the tone, story arc and message are all very familiar. But this is neatly counterbalanced by the thoroughly lovable and charming leading man. Hanks delivers an enduring performance of a man struggling with a midlife crisis. This is hardly the first time we’ve seen this kind of story, but Hanks brings real nuance to his performance, which lures the audience in. German director Tom Tykwer penned the script as well as taking directing duties, but he’s in a more restrained mode here – his previous work could be astonishingly propulsive and adrenaline-fuelled (such as in the cult classic Run Lola Run and the underseen Cloud Atlas). Although an early sequence set to Talking Heads’ "Once In A Lifetime" lets his dynamic and exuberant inventiveness peak through. forth from the pen of Dave Eggers, as it’s his acclaimed novel that Tykwer has adapted. There’s something about the tone of Eggers’ writing that can never be entirely subsumed, even when filtered through someone else’s writing. One thing that is less evident is Eggers’ pessimism (or some might say "realism") which has been set aside for a more hopeful outlook. A Hologram for the King is an easy watch, and will offer a fair dose of entertainment as Hanks charms and delights.

uara (aka Champion) is the latest film from director Charles Gozali, after his previous successes Finding Srimulat, Demi Dewi and Rasa. This action-drama, which has more than a hint of The Karate Kid about it, was released in April 2016. The key roles are filled out by well-known actors like Bisma Karisma, Ciccio Manassero, Tora Sudiro, Cut Mini, among others. Juara tells the story of a youngster called Bhishma (played by Bisma Karisma). From a young age he was very interested in martial arts and showed great potential. He clearly had an innate talent for it, and was able to quickly learn and adapt the techniques he was taught. But his mother Sarah (Cut Mini) was very concerned about his new passion and systematically did what she could to keep him from furthering his studies in that area, for reasons unknown. Years later, once Bhishma has grown up, he falls in love with Bella (Dina Anjani), a girl who attends the same campus as him. Unfortunately, a small-time mafia group leader, Attar (Ciccio Manassero), has also set his eyes on Bella. Attar threatens Bhishma and tells him to stay away from Bella, but Bhishma refuses to be bullied. The inevitable fight leaves Bhishma badly hurt. Bhishma wants to fight back, but he doesn’t know how. In his time of need, a mysterious man (Tora Sudiro) walks into his life. With his help he’ll have the opportunity to become the martial artist he always could have been – but he’ll also learn some truths that have long been kept from him.

Juara’s plot follows the traditional, and very enjoyable, "zero-to-hero" arc. That the journey is peppered with action scenes, overflowing emotion, and a touching romance, helps immeasurably. The martial arts sequences are well handled: they’re just dramatic enough without feeling like they’re unreal or over-exaggerated, which makes it all feel that much more believable. But the film isn’t all martial arts and fisticuffs; there’s also a fair bit of humour, which lightens the mood and keeps the film from ever becoming too grim. All told, this is a real "Champion" of a movie.

n a cupboard, in the rear of a diner somewhere in Maine, is a portal. Step through the portal and you’ll stumble into October 21st 1960. Step through it a week from now and it’ll be that exact same date. Whether you stay in the past for a minute or a year, only 2 minutes ever pass in the present. So what do you do with such a chance find? If you go back and change the past, it will affect the present. But if you step back through again, the changes will be undone – unless you make the same changes. Jake Epping (James Franco) is offered just such a chance to make real and provable change to his world. If he can save JFK then maybe,

just maybe, America makes some different choices, some better choices, than the ones they did in the wake of their tragedy. The mini-series 11/22/63, which is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, has fun playing up the nostalgia inherent in visiting a more innocent past, whilst also undercutting it and showing how things weren’t always better in the bygone days of old. It also does a very good job of laying out the practicalities of surviving in the past for a prolonged period. Our hero needs money, and perhaps even a job, as well as a place to call his home. But he’ll never truly feel at home; he’ll always feel apart. And should he

ever start to really change the past, there’s a good chance he won’t survive the experience, as it turns out the past doesn’t want to be changed. When he pushes against it, it pushes back, and hard. Make a call to your father, years before you ever existed, and the phone line distorts and blares with feedback. That’s the past reacting mildly. There are times when it takes a much harder line… This is a fast-moving and often intelligent show that takes a familiar genre and tweaks it just enough to throw you off guard. Minor note: try not to worry about how it’s all happening – just let yourself get caught up in the ride.

The documentary series provides a platform for young people to be more critical about existing problems and be more creative about their solutions – especially since many similar issues are cropping up elsewhere in today’s society. Since each individual has their own distinct viewpoint, the documentary believes that if enough information is gathered, and sufficient communication occurs, we can look at Indonesia’s problems from a new and more informed perspective, and ought to then be able to resolve them more effectively. Common topics that are dealt with include: environment and ecosystem issues, the balance between traditional beliefs and modern values, cultural and religious practices, societal prejudice and status inequality issues, nature preservation, food and music, political opinions and voices, engineering and invention. In short, the documentary covers a multitude of topics. The programme’s ultimate goal is to invite, inspire and encourage young people to think about and analyse various issues in Indonesia. The two episodes we have onboard today follow:

1) Dr. Asmayanti Asrum, a general practitioner who travels to areas with limited access to health-care professionals. 2) An 18-year-old dancer, who was born and raised in a family of dancers, who is now taking what he’s learned and is passing it on to a new generation. This documentary series has brought together a wide range of documentary film-makers, and has now established a forum where they can begin to tackle some of the problems we’re facing today.

A straw poll in my office to name a Weezer track led to the expected: Buddy Holly, Island in the Sun and Say It Ain’t So, and then we had to scratch our collective heads. However, the joy of this job means that as part of my day-to-day I can spend my time listening

to the back catalogue of numerous artists. When delving into past Weezer releases I very quickly discovered that I was more aware of their content than I realised. Not really a surprise as they have sold over 17 million albums worldwide, but even more astonishing when they have a work rate of only 10 releases over 24 years. With an almost unchanged line-up since they first formed, they manage to maintain an impressive consistency, which is perfectly highlighted in their latest eponymously titled album – which is also known as The White Album (most probably as a cheeky nod to the Beatles album of the same name). What we have here is a tighter and slicker album than the band’s last few releases. Produced by confessed Weezer admirer Jake Sinclair, the album nicely expresses Rivers Cuomo’s eccentricities and his ability to craft a great song, harmoniously, with nods to West Coast living, but with a tongue firmly wedged in its cheek. For a band that is not in the fresh flush of youth, there is so much energy packed into the 40 minutes, it is easy to see how Weezer manage to attract a new fan base on each release, and I find I have now fallen into that category. With an ongoing Asia tour in August 2016, they are certainly worth catching if you get the chance. I can guarantee that the sing-along tracks will not just be the old favourites; The White Album offers more than enough on its own.
