EDDY CURRENT INSPECTION OF CARBON FIBER COMPOSITE MATERIALS Introduction The failures resulting from impact or fatigue load occur in composite structures. At different applications, especially in aviation, while non-destructive inspection of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite may occur some troubles that arise from the limitations of individual NDT method. Development of advanced diagnostic systems that are able easily to identify and detect the degradation of the material is a new challenge for the NDI.
Equipment An INDETEC composite probe has been developed for the inspection of the carbon fiber composite material. It is an high-frequency and narrowband transducer, which allows the detection of imperfections within a frequency range from 8.5 MHz to 10 MHz. The coils are wound on a ferrite core and arranged crosswise and connected to driver/pick up mode. Type of material: Carbon fiber texture in epoxy resin Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CRP) Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) Unidirectional carbon fiber prepreg etc.
Type of Discontinuities: Artificial flaw (notch, hole), delamination, wave, missing bundles, cracks, fractures, carbon fiber breaking, detection of fiber direction.
