RINGKASAN
SUMMARY
The comforting state in Malang has been well-known since colonial era and it has been reduced for the last decades. Malang was known as cool and beautiful place for vacation, but it is different now. Malang has been occupied by buildings and housings, shops, malls, offices, and industries as consequences the rapid growth of population. The existence of these physical buildings will affect the micro climate, such as increasing temperature and decreasing humidity, whereas in fact the comfort of an area is mostly determined by local micro climate. Furthermore, human activities (anthropocentric) in urban area frequently shift the existence of City Park as one of Green-Open Space where introduction and endemic vegetations are planted. Green-Open Space has functioned as lungs due to it absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) and produces oxygen (O2) in return through photosynthetic process, which could reduce temperature as one of comfort supports. Such increased temperature would indirectly affect human metabolism and activities. Urban forest as the main element of city landscape is potential in absorbing carbon and reducing temperature in urban area as well as increasing the city comfort. Objectives of this research are : Achieving the shape and structure of the Green-Open Space in optimal level of comfort. 4. Attaining the role and characteristic of trees at the comfort level. The research was conducted in Malang of East Java and the location is at the altitude of 440 – 667 m asl on 26 Green-Open Spaces that cover the area of 400 m2. As comparison, data was also taken from Purwodadi Botanical Garden, The Indonesian Academy of Sciences in Pasuruan Regency at the altitude of 400 m asl and lies at 112-113 West Longitude and 70-80 South Latitude. Some conclusions and suggestions of this research are as follow : 1. Green-Open Spaces in Malang have been dominated (46%) by Multi-Level Lines, Two-Level Lines and Two Spread are more comfortable than Multi-Level Lines. 2. The trees in the Green-Open Spaces in Malang have rounded shapes which are able to decrease the temperature (2,07 + 0,72)°C, sympodial branching could reduce temperature (2.01 + 0.61)C; finer texture of the leaf could reduce temperature (1.91 + 0.59)C; dark color of the leaf could reduce temperature (1.82 + 0.78)C. The Palmae (Elaeis guineensis Jack., Gyrtostachys lakka, Roystonea regia, Caryota mitis, Cocos nucifera), Dewandaru, Genitri, longan, foetid cassia (Cassia tora L.), and kluwih could decrease the lower temperature (0.1C), meanwhile, Kiara Payung (Fillicium decipiens) is able to reduce temperature below the highest canopy (3.8C) and having the canopy density for about 90%. The increasing canopy closing in Green-Open Space will be followed by decreasing temperature in quadrate using equation y = -0.001x2 + 0.118x + 28.79. 5. In 2010, 25 villages in Malang are presumed comfortable by THI < 27 and it is supposed by 2050, there would no area that has THI < 27.
