Creation and Development of the Institute for History of Art Art-loving architect Josef Hlávka founded Czech Academy of Science, Letters and Art in 1890. Archeological Commission was attached to the Academy in 1893, instigated again by J. Hlávka. The Commission concentrated on scholarly research, of artistic, historical, written and literary monuments. Beginning in 1895, programme of the Archeological Commission included work on topographical inventories, which was interrupted only in 1937; the break lasted for more than forty years. Continuation of the task together with general support of arthistorical research fell as a legacy to the renewed Czechoslavak Academy of Sciences The Institute was created as an Institute for Theory and History of Art of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1952, receiving a new statute in 1958. Vladimír Novotn˘ was charged with creating and organizing the new institution. The Institute has been publishing the key Czech art-historical journal Umûní (The Art) since 1953, reaching the 39th volume this year. Two most important collective projects in the first years were led by Emanuel Poche: The Monuments of Art in Bohemia (1957) and Gothic Wall Painting in Bohemia (1958). The Institute organized an important conference on actual problems of preservation of monuments in 1956. In the more liberal political atmosphere of the sixties, Jaromír Neumann became Director of the Institute. Many important works were published by members of the Institute in this period, among others: Gothic Wall Painting in Bohemia and Moravia 1300-1378 - English version (1964), R.Chadraba: Dürers Apokalypse, Eine Ikonologische Deutung (1964), O.Nov˘: End of Metropolis (1964), J.Neumann: Baroque in Bohemia (1969), J.Krása: The Manuscripts of King Václav IV (1971), A.Merhautová: Early Medieval Architecture in Bohemia (1971). Journal Estetika (The Aesthetics) has been published since 1963 (28 volumes up to now). Institute for Theory of Architecture and Environment was created in 1964, attached to the Institute for History of Art. The Institute organized an important international conference in 1965, in connection with opening of the Picture Gallery of the Prague Castle. Members of the Institute waged a great campaign to save our endangered monuments since the sixties and in
1968 they published a memorandum on the state of historic monuments in Czechoslovakia. Sáva ·abouk was appointed Director of the Institute on July 1, 1970. Although general orientation of the work was enforcedly formed ideologically, the members of the Institute did nevertheless publish many valuable titles, above all: F.Matou‰: Mittelalterliche Glasmalerei in der Tschechoslowakei, Corpus vitrearum medii aevi (1975), V.Kotrba: The Baroque Gothic in Bohemia,Oeuvre of Jan Santini Aichel (1976), K.Stejskal: Karl IV. und die Kultur und Kunst siner Zeit (1978). Important was also the part taken in writing entries on Bohemian art in the catalogue Die Parler und der Schöne Stil (Köln 1978). The Institute has been publishing Czech art-historical bibliography since 1971 (brought up to 1984 by now). With the appointment of Jifií Dvorsk˘ as the new Director (1979-1990), the ideological burden was lightened and a fruitful influence on activity of the Institute was exercised by its renowned Research Curator Josef Krása (died in 1985). The former Institute for Architecture was re-attached in 1986 under the name Centre for Theory of Architecture and Settlement Development. Publishing activity of the Institute is notable during the eighties. Above all, following books should be mentioned: History of Art in Bohemia,Vol.I:The Middle Ages (1984), Vol.II:Renaissance and Baroque (1989), Chapters from Czech History of Art I-II (1987), Monuments of Art in Bohemia I-IV (1977-1982). Some of the more important monographs: J.Kuthan: Die mittelalterliche Baukunst der Zisterzienser in Böhmen und Mähren (1982), I.Hlobil: Theory of Historic City Reserves (1985), R.·vácha: From the Modern Movement to Functionalism (1985), T.Vlãek: Prague 19OO, Studies in History of Culture and Art (1986), E.Fuãíková: Drawings in the Time of Rudolf II (1986), F.·mejkal: Josef ·íma (1987),E.Fuãíková- B.Bukovinská-I.Muchka: Die Kunst am Hofe Rudolf II. (1988; French edition in 1990, Czech edition in 1991), M.Procházka: Signs of Drama and Theatre (1988), J.Vacková: Netherlandish Painting of the 15th and 16th Centuries - Collections in Czechoslovakia (1989), A.Slepiãka: Transformation of Countryside (1989). From the point of view of an European context of art history, imortant was also the part taken by E.Fuãíková, B.Bukovinská, L.Koneãn˘ and I.Muchka in preparation of the exhibitons of art in the era of Rudolf II in Essen (1988) and Vienna (1989), and by T.Vlãek and D.Panenková in the exhibition of Bohemian Art-Nouveau glass of the Lötz company in Düssledorf. After the revolution of November 17, 1989, TomበVlãek became a Director nominated by an elected Research Advisory Board, and a new concept of activity of the Institute was elaborated. Current Orientation of the Institute Reconstruction of programme and structure of the Institute provided a prerequisite for a new development of its activity. The Institute changed from an ideologically oriented workplace to a research institution during the years 1990-91, clearly oriented on the field of art history, problems of general theory of art and aesthetics and questions of research of architecture and settlemnt development. Work in the Institute concentrates above all on a knowledge of creative values of cultural hereitage in our countries, appearing due to pluralism of contemporary research methods in context and meaning unknown or undervalued so far. An orientation of the Institute on the following priorities follows from this: - Inventories of monuments of art in Bohemia. The work begun already in the 19th century, but the most important areas were never finished (above all, the art-historical topographies of Prague, Kutná Hora and the region of Moravia and Silesia). - Renaissance of historiography, criticism and theory of the twentieth century Czech art. In preceding decades, adequate conditions for such work were missing. The task of bringing the edition of History of Art in Bohemia up to the present day belongs to this category (volume 1939-1990). - Retrospective study of art and architecture in Bohemia in their wider European context (e.g. relationship of centre and periphery). Special attention will be devoted to historical
periods on the turn of epochs, when paradigms and context of civilization, history and style were changing. - Preparing art historical synposiums and exhibitions. Collaboration with the Office of the President of the Republic is a priority. This concerns exhibitons planned for 1993-96 to take place in the rooms of the Prague Castle (Josip Pleãnik, 1993; Rudolf II, 1995; Art in the Era of King John of Bohemia, 1996). - Programme of the Centre for Theory of Architecture and Settlement Development concentrates on problems of urban development and of contemporary architectural creation. It deals also with problems of area development and structure of settlement in the new social, economic and ecological context In terms of consolidation of the field of art history in Bohemia, the Institute for Art History will also take a more pronounced part in education of a young generation of art historians. Attainig a higher quality of postgradual studies is being negotiated. To combine effectively education and research, the Institute enters into agreements with universities to form common workplaces (with Academy of Arts an agreement on founding Archives of Historical Art Technology, with the Masaryk University an agreement on a department in Brno pursuing research and documentation of art historical monuments in Moravia, with the Higher School of Economic Studies an agreement on common postgradual educational programme concerning regions and cities). An agreement with the Philosophical Faculty of the Charles' University has special importance, concerning a creation of common Centre for Research, Documentation and Presentation of Art and Artistic Education. Acquiring an appropriate building for realization of such a project is being negotiated. In this connection, a new use for a former Augustinian monastery in Karlov is being considered, now owned by the Ministry of Interior. Research Projects Topography of Art-historical Monuments in Prague Project leaders: I.Muchka, M.·ronûk Editors of the volumes: K. Bene‰ovská, B.Bukovinská, I.Hlobil, L.Jirásko, T.Petrasová, R.·vácha Collaborators:P. Halík, J.Hausenblasová, H.Hlaváãková, J.Hofiej‰í, A.Jirka, I.Kofián, P.Kratochvíl, J.Kuthan, J.Lencová, P.Nedvûd, M.Ne‰lehová, J.Roháãek,K.Stejskal, M.Stránská, M.Studniãková, M.·ronûk, T.Vlãek, Z.V‰eteãková. Prague was and generally is considered a phenomenon of world importance, especially concerning the riches of its historic cultural values. The fact, that this historical legacy has never been systematically studied and published, is not in line with such common awareness. While the other European states take a great care of publishing the so-called Inventories of monuments and such an activity is one of priorities of organizations and institutions dealing with preservation of monuments, in our country ,on the other hand, only a selective inventory has been published after the World War II (Monuments of Art in Bohemia I-IV, 1977-82) prepared by the Institute for History of Art. Further volumes, embracing Moravia and Prague, have been prepared during recent years, but they have not been published yet. Presently, there appears a possibility of using the compiled material and make the Prague inventory a comprehensive topography of historic monuments. Results of such a work could be used also for complementing and improving the so-called official register of cultural monuments, bearing mark of an ideological voluntarism of the ancien régime. The method of the project follows experience, acquired in the course of compiling an Austrian inventory of monuments (Österreichische Kunsttopographie), belonging to the most modern ones in Europe. Most important, in our opinion, is a demand to embrace most widely the 19th
and 20th century architecture, not only as inventory of individual, isolated monuements, but of mass and space complexes. Stress laid on the knowledge of context, relation and integration of the monuments can raise the quality of a traditional inventory of monuments. According to the Austrian standard, the publication will be divided in 10 parts: Old Town-sacral architecture, Old Town-secular architecture, New Town-sacral architecture, New Town-secular architecture, Lesser Town, Prague Castle, Hradãany, “Greater Prague”-East, “Greater Prague”-West and Attached Municipalities. The extraordinary importance of the Prague Castle may lead to more separate volumes dedicated to its monuments. For each part a guarantor was appointed, who is responsible for selection of both movable and immovable monuments in his area and who choses internal and external collaborators for writing the individual entries. Preparation work takes place this year, consisting of selection of individual buildings and objects and finishing of a unified method of elaboration of entries, including lists of terminology and further unified and standardized processes, enabling the use of computer technology. Also bibliography will be compiled in a normalized way. Concept of this project in terms of creating a "databank" of monuments, permits a more flexible and many-sided use of information compiled during elaboration of the inventory. The large extent of the project demands further financial sources besides those available from Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, namely for computer equipment and financing of external collaborators. History of Art in Bohemia, Vol.III Editor: T. Vlãek Assistant Editors: V.Lahoda, M.Ne‰lehová Collaborators: L.BydÏovská, T.Petrasová, R.·vácha One of the priorities of the Department of Modern Art is to finish the third part of History of Art in Bohemia. Similarly to the two parts already published, it will be divided in two volumes: the first one will include art from the beginning of the 19th century to 1890, while the second will embrace the eighteen-nineties and problems of arrival of modern art until 1939. The first volume is supposed to contain ca 600 pages of typescript with ca 400 photograpghs (one-third in colour), the second volume should have the same amount of text and ca 450 reproductions (almost half of them in colour). Individual chapters will be written by specialist in singular periods and fields. Every larger period of time will be followed by a "Chronicle" to mention the important facts and unify the chapters, i.e. a detailed chronology of artistic life, naming the important exhibitions, artistic activities, groups, their members, etc. Completely finished manuscripts are supposed to be prepared for print before the end of 1992. Editors will try to negotiate also a parallel publication first in German (considering a relation of Czech artists to the German-speaking milieu), later also in English and French. Topography of Art-historical Monuments in Kutná Hora District Project leader: B.Altová Collaborators: J.Hofiej‰í, A.Jirka, I.Kofián, J.Kuthan, J.Lencová, I.Muchka, J.Roháãek, R.·vácha. Inventory of monuments in Kutná Hora district was selected for prior elaboration because the district was not included in an Inventory of monuments according to individual distritcs, published between 1897-1937. Monuments in the district have never been evaluated in complex, beside a basic register of movable and immovable objects, compiled by the Institute for Preservation of Monuments in Central Bohemia in the seventies and published only in part. The current art-historical topography is divided in three volumes, embracing 1. Town of Kutná Hora, 2. District of Kutná Hora, 3. Castle Îleby. The first volume will include ca 400
immovable cultural monuments and extensive collections belonging to the Catholic Church, District Museum, Town Hall, District Archives and and also belonging to the Institute for Preservation of Monuments in Central Bohemia. The volume shloud have cca 600 pages of typescript and cca 500 black-and-white photographs. The manuscirpt should be finished before the end of 1992. Volume concerning the Kutná Hora district is being prepared in the same size. The manuscript should be finished in 1994. The volume devoted to the castle Îleby includes about one thousand movable objects gathered in an important collection acquired by the Auersperg family during the second half of the 19th century. The volume will have cca 300 pages of typescript and cca 500 photographs. The manuscript should be finished before the end of 1991 and prepared for publishing in the beginning of 1992. Edition of the Îleby volume has no financial backing yet. District Office of Kutná Hora promises a financial support in 1992 for the second volume. Art-historical Monuments in Moravia and Silesia Project leader: B.Samek Collaborator: J.Lencová Following the four-volume edition of Monuments of Art in Bohemia, the Institute for History of Art began a systematic elaboration of the regions of Moravia and Silesia in 1979. While in Bohemia there exists a long and developed tradition of art historiography, research in Moravia and Silesia can be based only on some partial results of research done in art-historical seminaries of Brno and Olomouc Universities, and on the rare local and biographical monographs. The field study had, therefore, mainly character of basic research. Two-thirds of the area have been mapped in this way and the first volume (localities A -J) prepared for print, two more volumes are supposed to follow. The work will present facts on the works of art in Moravia and Silesia, on the level reached by modern knowledege, but also great amount of new findings. Handbook of Art in Bohemia Editor: A.Horová Members of the Institute for History of Art prepare a new edition of Encyclopaedia of Art in Bohemia , published in 1975. Entries it contained should be edited and updated, enlarged by inedita, new findings and themes and personalities tabuized in the past, so that the book would be able to give an information on art in Bohemia, that would be quick and short, but at the same time precise and based on recent scholarship. The book should contain the basic knowledge of the field (artists, personalities of Czech art theory, aesthetics and history of art, comprehensive historical entries, styles, groups, art-historical terminolgy, iconography, etc.) and, at the same time, be accessible to the widest cultural public. The manuscript should be prepared for publishing before the end of 1992, with financial help from Ministry of Culture and Office of the Prime MInister of the Czech Republic. Art Criticism in the 20th century Project leader: L.Hlaváãek The project aims at construction of understandable and effective language of art criticism. It will finish in 1995 by a publication summarizing historical and systematical evaluation of art criticism and scholarship. Preventive Preservation and Rehabilitation of Environment Project leader: J.Macháãek
Collaborators: J.Mouãka, J.Ossendorf Prevention from degradation of environment by human activities made a marked progress in methodology in recent decade. The range of practical application of the "Environmental Imapct Assesment" (EIA) methods is widening. âSFR joined the international convention on EIA. The projetc aims at verifying the importance of EIA technique for preservation of cultural values of settlements in Czechoslovakia. The project will concentrate mainly on object and methods of identification of the culturally important localities sensitive to degradation of environmemt. It will also assess possibilities for rehabilitation of a degraded environment, presented by a regulative concept of area planning. Results of the project will be applied in areas crossing borders into neighbouring countries. The project was registred in the state programme of environmental care as one of international ecologic programmes. Area Connotations of Re-Integration of the Czech Republic into Europe Project Leader: A.Slepiãka Collaborators:E.Ho‰ková, R.Synková, P.Zieschang Re-integration of Czechoslovakia into Europe will bring along - besides political, cultural and economical consequences - also new impulses to change and develop a structure of settlements in the Czech Republic, of city aglomerations, rural towns and country settlements. The project aims at providing a theoretical basis and reccomendations concerning a strategy of further area and urban development to administration on different levels. The task will be dealt with in cooperation with Akademie für Raumforschung und Landesplannung (Germany) and other specialist institutions. Research projects - scholarships granted by âSAV Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts in the National Library in Prague, Part I:Manuscripts from collections of monasteries Teplá, Osek, Bfievnov, Knights of the Cross, Franciscans of Nové Mûsto. Project leader: H. Hlaváãková Collaborators: K. Stejskal, M.Studniãková Extensive collections of manuscripts in the National Library in Prague still miss a catalogue of illuminated manuscripts, being completely unmapped from this point of view. Elaboration of a scholarly catalogue of the whole collection will take many years' work and it must proceed by stages. In the first stage, the collections belonging to monasteries were selected; among them wholly unknown manuscripts can be found. Catalogue will contain not only stylistic analysis and attributions of individual manuscripts, but, in the first place, an analysis of relationshiop of illumnations to the text and of function of illumnations in different kinds of manuscripts. Rudolf II and His Era (Exhibiton and Scholarly Catalogue) Project leader: E.Fuãíková Collaborators: B.Bukovinská, J.Hausenblasová, I.Muchka, M.·ronûk Exhibition called Rudolf II and Prague (1995, the Prague Castle) will embrace the years 1550-1650. It will bring to mind not only Rudolf's reign (1576-1612), but also development of Humanism and Renaissance in Bohemia during the vice-regency of Ferdinand of Tirol in Prague and interesting artistic activities during the Thirty Years War. Prague was the seat of an
Emperor and ranged among the most important centres of politics, culture and science in Europe on the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. This was shown already by exhibitons in Essen and Vienna in 1988 (Prag um 1600), supported by research in history of art, musicology, literary history and history. The proposed project will use experience acquired by both exhibitions and summarize both the results of older research and the new research, undertaken since March, 1990, in collaboration with Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, in terms of OWP of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. An emphasis laid on architecture and environment of Prague will form an important aspect of the exhibiton, together with the use of authentic rooms in the Prague Castle. Josip Pleãnik and T.G.Masaryk Project leader: T.Vlãek Collaborator: Z.Luke‰ (Office of the President of the Republic) Project aims at presentation of intellectual effort and artistic formulation of creative ideas of building a new society and its culture, including its state representation, in context of development of aesthetics, philosophy and architecture in Central Europe. The themecovers a whole range of ideas from historic reflexion to humanist concept of modernity. An essay and an exhibition, prepared by the Institute for History of Art and the Office of the President in the rooms of the Prague Castle, will be the result of the research. History of Architecture of the Devûtsil Group. Josef Chochol (1880-1956). Profiles of architects of the Devûtsil group. Jaromír Krejcar (1895-1949) Project leader: R.·vácha The project aims at a progress in art-historical research opened by a successful exhibiton of the Devûtsil Group, held in 1986-1990 in Brno, Prague, Budapest, Lodz, Zagreb, Oxford and London. It concentrates on the work of architects, who were active in the avantgarde association, namely and in detail on the work of Josef Chochol, who combined in his activity a "new architecture" with previous Cubist experiments, and of Josef Krejcar, author of several projects and buildings, that are most typical for architectural style of the Devûtsil group. Together with monographs of Chochol and Krejcar, also profiles of all the other architects of Devûtsil will be elaborated in detail (Linhart, Honzík, Fragner, Obrtel, Havlíãek, Feurstein, etc.). Artificialism Project leader: L.BydÏovská The aim of this project is to prepare a book, to be published in Czech and English (possibly also in French), dealing with a special artistic movement, artificialism, developed by painters ·t˘rsk˘ and Toyen in Prague and Paris in 1926-1931. The theme crosses over to the context of European avant-garde of the twenties, and artificialism undoubtedly belongs to this context not only thanks to its quality and originality, but also because of the fact, that Toyen is one of the few Czech painters with a truly European repute due to her later long-time activity in Breton's circle in France. Main tasks of art-historical research: 1/ Arrange a scholarly catalogue of Artificialist works of art (pictures, drawings, book jackets, stage designs, etc.) 2/ Analyze relationship to late Cubism and abstraction in the Twenties; problem of an innerly ambivalent relationship to Surrealism (confrontation of images and Artificialist theory). 3/ Iconography, relationship of poetry and painting, problems of interpretation. 4/ Reception of Artificialism.
Vincenc Kramáfi. Collector, Art-historian and Propagator of Cubism Project leader: V.Lahoda The project concentrates on a detailed research of art-historical activity of V.Kramáfi, an important Czech art-historian and collector of French Cubism, namely of works of P.Picasso. Ensuing essay should concentrate on observing his work in theory of art as an original valorizatin of his collecting and organizing activities (since 1919 Karmáfi served as a Director of Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Art in Prague). Cubism meant for Kramáfi a culmination of a long-time development of art, and from this point of view many of his activities can be understood, i.e. a permanent oscillation between old and modern art, fisrt of all Cubism, both in theory and in collector's practice. Publication should be richly illustrated and it should bring both an index of Kramáfi's collection and a review of the works of art he dealt with in his analyses and which he bought for the Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Art. Urban Morphology Project leader: P.Kratochvíl Collaborators: P.Halík, E.Ho‰ková Historical town forms are eloquent documents of history of culture. Study of such forms and interpretation of their meanings can provide conceptional impulses for architectural production and for urbanism, striving to create a meaningful and formally clearly defined town stage, after leaving the phase of emphasizing mostly functional point of view. Such studies should also enrich a theory of preservation of monuments with methods of analyzing wider spatial framework of individual monuments. Urban morphology deals with the problem of urban forms. It aims at an identification of constitutive elements of town forms and their relationship,at interpretation of connected meaning and at clarification of their bond to history of culture and society. The project intends to elaborate a methodology and theoretical basis of morphologic analyses in such a way, that they could be applied to towns in Bohemia and used for actual production and teaching (1991). A study of Prague squares will be written (1993) as a concrete example of morphologic analysis. Semiotics and Musicotherapy Project leader: J.Doubravová The project aims at introducing a two-year post-graduate study of musicotherapy and semiotics. Theoretical aim will be: 1/ Research of possibilities of musical expression on the basis of inter-personal musical semantics as formulated by a group led by Prof.Dr. F. Knobloch in the sixties. 2/ Elaboration of results for area of semiotics of art and general semiotics, including an emphasis on expressions on art. The project will be realized in collaboration with Prof. Knobloch (Charles' University in Prague), Centre for Youth, musicotherapeutic section of the Society for Psychotherapeutics, semiotic group attached to the Cybernetic Society of âSAV and it will be consulted with University in Hamburg. Research projects - scholarships granted by institutions abroad Rudolf II (1576-1612), History of Art and Culture Project leader: B.Bukovinská and R.Distelberger (Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien)
Collaborators: E.Fuãíková, J.Hausenblasová, I.Muchka, H.Haupt (KHM Wien) Scholarship has been granted in terms of Ost-West-Programm of the Austrian Academy of Sciences to support cooperation between Austrian and Central and Eastern European researchers. The project is funded by Ministry of Science and Research, in advance for three years. The project aims at a general evaluation of personality of Rudolf II in context of cultural history of Bohemia and Austria, used for preparation of an exhibition (1995 in the Prague Castle) and for elaboration of several monographs and editions of archival sources. In the first stage, research is concentrated above all in the archives in Prague and Vienna and includes working visits of collaborators in Prague and Vienna. For the first year, a sum of 771.000 öS was allocated. It was used, among others, to equip a computer workplace in Prague, compatible with the one in Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It will serve to save bibliographies, data, groundwork for the exhibiton, etc. Medieval Wall Paintings Project leaders: Z.V‰eteãková and E.Lanz (ÖAW Bundesdenkmalamt Wien) Collaborators: H.Hlaváãková, K.Stejskal, M.Studniãková Scholarship was granted in terms of the OWP programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Project aims at creating an inventory of medieval wall painting in Bohemia and at judging a relationship between wall painting in Bohemia and Austria. Conference "Culture of the Hussite Era" was held as part of the project in 1991; in May, 1992, a conference "Relationship of Wall Painting in Southern Bohemia and Upper Austria" will take place in Strakonice. Research stays in Austria in 1991: Z.V‰eteãková, H.Hlaváãková, K.Stejskal, M.Studniãková. The Austrian partner donated a Nikon camera with accessories (cost 27.516 öS), total sum of expenses has been 118.700 öS.

Journals published by the Institute Umûní (The Art) Published six times a year, in an edition of 1000 copies, each number 80-90 pages long. Editor in Chief: dr.Rostislav ·vácha. Executive Editor: dr.Jifiina Hofiej‰í. Board of Editors: dr. Eli‰ka Fuãíková, dr. Ivo Hlobil, dr.Jaromír Homolka, dr.Jifiina Hofiej‰í, dr.Rudolf Chadraba, dr.Lubomír Koneãn˘,dr. Jifií Kroupa, dr. Ivo Krsek, dr. Vojtûch Lahoda, dr. Lubomír Slavíãek, dr. Karel Stejskal, dr.Jaroslav Pe‰ina, dr.Petr Wittlich The journal has been published by the Institute for History of Art since 1953. It follows tradition of a journal published by Jan ·tenc since 1918 under the same name. Editors in Chief of The Art were the most prominent Czech historians of art: among others, Jaroslav Pe‰ina, Emanuel Poche and Josef Krása. The journal presents the results of Czech art history.
Published articles deal, therefore, mainly with history of art in Bohemia, but contributions with international span and Bohemica by foreign researchers are not missing, either: e.g. by Jan Bialostocki, Hellmut Lorenz, Udo Kultermann or Robert Suckale. Articles published in The Art observe the history of art since Early Middle Ages until the 20th century. The journal selects for publishing essays based on a more profound methodological concept, free from ideological and nationalistic prejudices and, at the same time, inspired by a varying activity of art history abroad. Recently the journal enters into closer contacts with researchers abroad and tries to make the real values of both older and modern art in Bohemia accessible also to foreign readers. The journal publishes extensive summaries in German, French and English, some articles bz foreign authors are published in original language. Subscription orders should be sent to the ÚDU address. Estetika (The Aesthetics) Published four times a year in an edition of 1000 copies, each having 64 pages. Editor in Chief: dr.TomበVlãek. Executive Editor: dr.Helena Lorenzová. Board of Editors: dr.Ján Bako‰, dr. Josef Hlaváãek, dr. Ludvík Hlaváãek, dr.Milan Jankoviã,dr. Antonín Mokrej‰, dr. Marta Ottlová, dr.Miroslav Petfiíãek jr., dr.Lubomír Plesník, dr.Miroslav Procházka, dr.Ivan Vojtûch, dr. Josef Zumr and dr. Vlastimil Zuska. The aim of the journal is to acquaint readers with tasks of aesthetics and theory of art, with search for and interpretation of the basic values of life and art, acquiring a new meaning nowadays. The journal is inter-disciplinary oriented, integrating and confronting knowledge from the fields of aesthetics, philosophy, sociology and ethics with theoretical and methodological aspects of the singular theories and criticisms of art. From this point of view, the journal is irreplaceble by other periodicals. Articles by the authors, that were banned from publishing for long decades, now have and will have priority (Jan Patoãka, Antonín Mokrej‰, Josef Hlaváãek, Oleg Sus, Miroslav âervenka, Robert Kalivoda, Ale‰ Haman, RÛÏena Vacková, etc.). The journal wants to bring to attention in historically oriented articles the glorious tradition of Czech aesthetics, that reached a world wide renown thanks to Otakar Zich, Karel Svoboda, Jan Mukafiovsk˘, Jan Patoãka and others, and, at the same time, to follow this tradition further. Subscription orders should be sent to the ÚDU address Services provided by the Institute Library Board of Trustees: S. Adamczyková, B.Bukovinská, L.Hlaváãek, E.Ho‰ková, L.Koneãn˘ (Charles' University), R.Macková, R.·vácha, Z.V‰eteãková. Library has as of August 31, 1991, 62.822 volumes of books, catalogues and journals; 9.038 of them belonging to the library of the former Kondakov Institute (in a depository Na Popelce), and cca 2000 volumes being Prof.Cibulka's legacy. Books are deposited in three places - depositories Na Popelce, ulice Karoliny Svûtlé and Ha‰talská. All the new art historical publications from Czechoslovakia are bought and added to the collection, including those dealing with theory and methodology and books from related fields (aesthetics). Foreign literature is acquired predominantly by way of exchange with specialized institutions and libraries, a smaller part of periodicals can be bought. Number of accessions is about 1000 titles per year. Library exchanges with 58 partners from 16 countries. 216 titles of journals are subscribed, 91 of them from abroad. Almost 200 readers are registred, both internal and external. 1.709 loans were registered in 1990, and 2.731 loans in attendance. The library also provides loans from abroad for
members of the Institute through the Central Library of the Academy of Sciences (76 books, journals and copies in 1990). The library can be used also by other art historians and students, served by alphabetical and object catalogue and catalogue of names. By way of exchange with the International Foundation for Art Research (New York), the library acquired in 1990 the 76 volumes of register of collections of prints "The Illustrated Bartsch", Abaris Books, New York. In 1991 the Institute for History of Art was granted by the Getty Grant Project funds to buy books for 40.000 US $. A committee for coordination of buying policies was established in this connection, formed by S.Adamczyková and Z.V‰eteãková (IHA), T.Pergler and L.Kesner jr. (National Gallery) and L.Koneãn˘ (University). At the same time, a Council of Art-historical Libraries was established, formed by representatives from the IHA, National Gallery, Museum of Arts and Crafts, Academy of Art, Institute for Preservation of Monuments,Academy of Arts and Crafts and the Masaryk University in Brno. Archives Core of the archives of the Institute for History of Art is formed by files of the Archeological Institute of N.P.Kondakov (1925-52) together with posthumous papers of the prominent Byzantologue, manuscripts of members of the Archeological Institute and great amount of documentation. Posthumous papers of Zdenûk Wirth, Member of Academy, (18781961) are the most extensive part of the collection, as he donated to the Institute for History of Art his collections of prints, photographs, negatives, plans and process-blocks. Together, the Insititute took over after Wirth's death also posthumous papers of other art historians and institutions, collected by him during his life. Among them are posthumous papers of A.Gnirs (1873-1933), R.Hlubinka (1878-1951), R.KuchyÀka (1869-1925), K.B.Mádl (1859-1932) and part of the files of the Archaeological Commission (1897-1936) together with picture documentation and part of the manuscripts of the National Cultural Commission (1946-1958). Posthumous papers of J.Cibulka (1886-1968), R.Chuman (1895-1957), K.Chytil (1857-1934), V.Kramáfi (1877-1960), V.M.Nebesk˘ (1899-1949), J.Peãírka (1891-1966), J.Polák (18861945), I.·perling (1930-1987) and F.Îákavec (1878-1937) were acquired by the archives either as inheritance or they were bought. A rare collection of 84 icons inherited from the former Kondakov Institute belonging now to the ÚDU is kept in the National Gallery in Prague; part of them is on permanent exhibition in Sternberg Palace. Photo Archives Core of the photo archives collection of the Institute for History of Art are negatives from photographs taken by photographers working for the Institute. As of the end of 1990, the archives contained 45.776 items. Besides, two separate collections of negatives are kept in the archives, acquired as legacies of prominent photographers of monuments of art - Josef Sudek (13.119 items, except negatives of creative photographs, taken over by the Museum of Arts and Crafts) and Josef Ehm (2. 923 items, except documentation of Prague, handed over to the Museum of the Capital of Prague, and of applied art, handed over to the Museum of Arts and Crafts). Another collection is formed by slides of art-historical monuments from different areas, made by our photographers, bouht or obtained as a gift in 1990; this collectin amounts to 10.794 items. Separately arranged is also a collection of photographs, acquired by buying, as a gift, etc. This collection contains as of the end of 1990 55.155 items (e.g. photographs inherited
from V.Kramáfi and Z.Wirth).The most important part of the photo archives are photographs adjusted on the so-called "scholarly files" of individual works of art, documenting mainly works of art of Bohemian origin, divided into compartments of architecture, painting, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts and applied art. Photographs of European art from collections in Czechoslovakia and a fragmentary collection of world art (including e.g. rare and extensive collection of photographs of Italian architecture, accumulated by V.Karmáfi) form another separate part of the whole collection. The photo archives contain also index of iconography (ICONCLASS System, Haag) and microfiches from the Marburg and Köln photo archives (MARBURGER INDEX, Marburg); the Institute acquired them as a gift of the Kress Foundation in 1989. Budget of the Institute for 1991 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(thousand Kãs) expected expenses allocated means revised means -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------limit of salaries 3.560 3.572 3.300 journals 720 398 420 foreign connections 150 83 60 other non investment expenses 1.100 851 1.124 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------total 5.530 4.904 4.904 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Such difference between the real needs of the Institute and allocated finances led to a need to reduce the number of employees by 24,8% in comparison to 1990 and to restrict foreign connections, in order to secure finances for indispensable costs of performance, steadily rising this year. In spite of such reduction, a subsidy for publishing the journals had to be reduced, which caused great difficulties for them. Another unsolved problem is publication of results of research of the Institute, affected by general crisis of Czech publishing houses, the Institute being unable to contribute financially. Some of the the more demanding research projects (Topography of Prague, History of Art in Bohemia III, Art-historical Monuments in Moravia and Silesia, Topography of Kutná Hora) need further financial backing besides the âSAV budget, especially to cover the computer technology and external collaboration.
