The currently inaccessible Prefa Wolf grounds in the northern part of the city district of Holešovice, with an area of around 7.5 hectares, is on one side cut off by the river and on the other by the transport infrastructure. It is adjacent to one of the largest development zones in Prague – Bubny/Zátory. In the context of the existing zoning plan it is categorized as a green area, which ruled out development or modification of the existing grounds of the former prefabricated panel plant. It was in this very place that panels were produced for the apartment block developments in the north and east of Prague. Today production has ceased and the grounds have fallen into disrepair. The genius loci and development potential of the area carry a great challenge, though. Fragments of its history may become constituent elements of the place without it becoming a lifeless theme park, but on the contrary a viable part of the city. In Šimon Brabec’s project, they shape the character of the place. Ferro-concrete tracks for cranes, a 1970s administrative building and a concrete silo that formerly served as a cement store form the central elements of the design. To some extent this case is reminiscent of the history of the Zollverein district in Essen in Westphalia. After the industry died there, it seemed that the whole region would disappear. The state bought the lands from the original owners, however, and declared the whole area a cultural monument. Despite the fact that its future was uncertain for a whole ten years, in the end, thanks to its inclusion in the UNESCO heritage list and a spatial development plan by the architectural studio OMA, it was possible to create a viable place that is visited each year by half a million tourists. The main benefit of this project, though, rests elsewhere - in a shift away from the understanding and creation of a city as a final product, towards processes and contributors that will influence the development of the given area over time. The outcome does not consist of the final appearance of the development zone, but a delineation of principles and regulations – i.e. a development study, which sets out the division of plots, the placement of public spaces and the
veřejných prostranství a sítí technické infrastruktury.
technical infrastructure networks. The entire project is based on the optimum situation in which the developer is the city and will take into account public interest and the objectives of individual building investors. This approach does not bring short-term profit as much as long-term vitality and variety to the area. The emphasis on the local scale of the development study facilitates, within the context of clearly defined rules, developing the given area with sufficient flexibility over time. At the same time, a clear agreement from the city and from the investor on the requirements for use of the area should not be lacking. From a town planning perspective, the emphasis is on the procedural aspects of urban planning that can be seen especially in West European metropolises. These cities attempt, by means of strategic plans and other instruments, to determine the development priorities and create a framework for further territorial planning documents and the conduct of the contributing participants in the territory. This method of thinking is also reflected in the Czech environment and is at present one of the main topics of planning discourse.

When we decide to develop a particular site, we often consider it from the perspective of permanence and longevity, and rarely about its possible short-term use and temporariness. Nevertheless, there are places in the city that are problematic for various reasons, whose future is uncertain and which are worth considering in terms of short-term scenarios. A good example is the Pavlač cinema, which Marie Eliášová places in a 12 × 9m gap in Prague 2. The proposed structure materially completes the existing construction block, but also brings a fresh approach to its function and use. The building opens onto the street and, similarly to a display case, draws one inside. It becomes a part of the street and the public space and allows locals as well as passersby to meet either by chance or arrangement. As in the case of the classic galleried house where the lives of the tenants are played out in a narrow street, here, too, there is a possibility of simply creating an atmosphere of intimacy. It is also possible, however, to survey what is happening on all levels, as in a theatre. When there is no show, debates, seminars, concerts or other programs may take place here. The steel construction facilitates changing the appearance of the resulting structure, which can also be easily removed. Perhaps the author of the design did not a priori address the temporariness and applicability of this principle for acupuncturist interventions into the public space. If, however, we consider the project on a citywide scale, it is self-evident that this principle may also be exploited elsewhere. The question arises, however, what public space actually is. On the one hand we encounter ever more often opinions concerning the dissipation of its meaning and the disintegration of the public sphere. On the other hand, we meet with its Renaissance, with a large amount of public space becoming, often without regard for its quality, a powerful incantation for regional development. But what do we actually need it for? In defining it, we often simply oscillate in the duality between the private and the public in which is defined a space that is accessible to all, irrespective of the ownership of the land in
question. The quality of a city’s public spaces has a distinct influence on the frequency of use of space and the quantity of voluntary, social and commercial activities. Also connected with this is the necessity of understanding the city as an open, multi-layered system, and not at all as a set of separate, optimized functions (housing, work, entertainment), in which social contact is, on the contrary, made easier. To create the sort of space where people gladly (and therefore frequently) meet and can establish fully-fledged social links means supporting the development of life in the city. The rules, shared values and meanings ascribed to it by the individual participants, which furthermore alter over time, also apply here, however. Also associated with the gradual disintegration of traditional forms of public space is a certain nostalgia for the traditional form of block development with a clearly defined space of streets and squares. New forms of public space also appear, though, which are difficult to categorize simply. They are distinguished by the fact that they facilitate sharing and meeting. They do not replace the traditional urban spaces, but on the other hand complement and accentuate them.

“In general, therefore, color is a means of exerting a direct influence upon the soul. Color is the keyboard. The eye is the hammer. The soul is the piano, with its many strings. The artist is the hand that purposefully sets the soul vibrating by means of this or that key.” Wassily Kandinsky thus referred to the relationship between colors and notes in his 1912 watershed treatise “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”. Considerations of this sort concerning chromatic and sonic consonances have, however, a considerably longer tradition. There are mentions, for example, in the sciences of ancient India, of correlations between rhythmic schemes, musical scales and color arrangements. In a European context, we can already find the idea of the mutual relations between chromatic and musical harmonies, founded on mathematical proportions, in the thoughts of Aristotle. ‘Optophonics’ – color music – is an established term for audiovisual manifestations that combine in equal measure a musical element with a visual one (usually light-kinetic). These manifestations arise from the human psychophysical disposition towards dual sensation (synthesia), such as color hearing or aural seeing. Although these abilities have not been demonstrated to exist in everyone, they have been scientifically documented and are present to a heightened extent in musical composers, for example, as well as in visual artists who work with musical elements. The term ‘color music’ has its roots in the end of the 18th century. Its beginnings were accompanied by the construction of musical instruments whose playing generated certain light effects. Interest in instruments that would mutually combine visual and musical elements is, indeed, far from new. In 1725, Louis-Bertrand Castel attempted to construct an “optical harpsichord” (clavecin oculaire), inspired by Newton’s demonstrations of the dispersion of white sunlight into the colors of the spectrum by means of a glass prism. Although Castel’s plans were never put into practice, they stimulated the creation of many other chromatic instruments, including, for example, the “ocular-harpsichord” (1754) and a gas-powered organ called the “pyrophone” (1869–1873).
The 20th century brought with it a wide range of new implementations, which were developed in parallel with the new technological possibilities: Alexander Scriabin’s “clavier à lumière”, Thomas Wilfred’s “clavilux”, Alexander Laszlo’s “Farblichtklavier” and Zdeněk Pešánek and Ervín Schulhoff ’s color piano. At the beginning of the 20th century, the physicist Albert Michelson wrote enthusiastically: “So strongly do these color phenomena appeal to me that I venture to predict that in the not very distant future there may be a color art analogous to the art of sound – a color music”. The issue of color music is a multilayered one, however. Fred Collopy writes in his article “As visual music (re)asserts itself as a performance art”: “At least four threads interweave to bring us to the current moment. They can be thought of as consisting of contributions by inventors like Castel, painters such as Leopold Survage in Paris and several members of the Bauhaus in Germany, film-makers too numerous to mention, and to a lesser extent musicians, most notably Scriabin. To treat the four groups as separate is to focus on the threads at the expense of the tapestry.” While inventors investigated the mutations of color depending on timing and melody, painters considered refined color and sound harmonies. The aspect of the moving picture and experimentation with abstract film conducted by Walter Ruttmann, Oskar Fischinger and John and James Whitney, for example, subsequently transformed color music into visual music in a light and sound art of moving colors. In 1947, Thomas Wilfred, the inventor of the above-mentioned ‘clavilux’, termed the new art of abstract light visualization “lumia”: “Place this potential in a creative artist’s hand, supply him with a physical basis – screen, instrument and keyboard – and when his finished composition is performed, you have the eighth fine art, lumia, the art of light, which will open up a new aesthetic realm, as rich in promise as the seven older ones. In composition and execution the potential range of expression reaches from the purely non-objective to the stark representational; from the diaphanous and amorphous to the solid and sharply outlined;

Za čas budeme mít virtuózy, kteří očarují obecenstvo mistrovskou interpretací svých děl.“ Wilfred uvažoval o světelné vizualizaci tvaru, barvy a pohybu v intencích analogového média. Nové technologické možnosti v oblasti digitálního zobrazování hudby s sebou přinášejí další, doposud neprozkoumané výrazové polohy a estetická specifika. Ačkoli máme k dispozici přes 300 let bádání a experimentování, můžeme se stále znovu vracet do původní výchozí situace, nově promýšlet vizuální hudební nástroje, hledat další možnosti obrazových a zvukových konsonancí. Nechť tedy hudba hraje a září všemi barvami.

from the very slow to split second rapidity; from barely perceptible dimness to dazzling brilliance and from the majestic to the grotesque. In time we shall have lumia virtuosi who can sweep the spectators off their feet with masterly interpretations of a composer’s work.” Wilfred considered the light visualization of shape, color and movement within the confines of analog media. The new technological possibilities in the area of digital imaging of music bring with them further, as yet unexplored expressive means and aesthetic specifics. Although we have at our disposal more than 300 years of research and experimentation, we can still return repeatedly to the original point of departure, rethink visual musical instruments and seek further options of visual and sonic consonances. Let the music play and glow with every color.

Shoes are of course an everyday thing. It was not until Man was shod, though, that he raised his gaze proudly to the heavens, because he didn’t have to worry about stubbing his toe while walking. It is not quite clear when that came about. The oldest pair of shoes that has been preserved is approximately 10,000 years old. Some skeletal remains suggest, however, that shoes changed the human gait and distribution of body mass some 40,000 years ago. Although shoes originally served as protection of the foot, their function was not merely utilitarian. For some, the significance of footwear may be related, for example, to questions of style, for others to issues of comfort. For the French shoe designer Roger Vivier shoes represent “a sculptural problem in which the center is always a void”. According to the historian Mary Trasko, footwear is “capable of inspiring imaginative caprice and private longing on an extravagant and exultant scale“, while it can also be understood, for example, as “spiritual contact with the ground”. In our region, shoes have, thanks to the work of Tomáš Bat’a and his heritage, strong economic and ethical connotations: “Whenever I come across shoes coming out of the workshop with badly pressed welts or a twisted heel, it is not this disfigured work that interests me, but where and in what the character of the person in the workshop is disfigured”, said Tomáš Baťa. There is a line passing through history of the powerful symbolic status of shoes. In many cultures they are a symbol of the genitalia and in primitive societies we still meet today with a belief in the fertility power of the human foot, which in more advanced societies is transformed into the sexual power of shoes. Shoe and foot fetishes (and the closely-related skin fetish) are the most widespread forms of fetish in the Western world and since the 19th century have been accompanied by systematic psychological references. The German psychologist Viktor Emil von Gebsattel mentions a shoe fetishist who rented hotel rooms and stole the shoes that women left outside their rooms for brushing. He always cleaned them first, then spoke gently to them, calling them “sweetheart” and “my
love”. According to him, each shoe had in its shape and scent a particular physiognomy, but always lost its sexual attraction for him after use. The sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld talks of another patient who also stole pairs of shoes in a hotel corridor. The greatest attraction for him was when a pair of large men’s shoes or boots, ideally military, stood side-by-side with refined ladies’ evening shoes. The psychologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing saw in the shoe and foot fetish cocooned masochism as early as the second half of the 19th century. He surmised that the foot and shoe had become a fetish because they symbolized a desire for submission. In earlier times, a victor would put his foot on the throat of a defeated foe as proof of conquest, and the same applied to love, according to von Krafft-Ebing: anyone who makes a fetish of the foot or shoe is thereby expressing a wish to be subjugated to another. Shoes do not have a symbolic function only on a sexual level. They have always been an important fashion accessory carrying a message of the social status and allegiance of their wearer. The choice of material, color, shape and quality of craftsmanship had an important communicative function. The patterns of clothing were for centuries bound by rules for individual social classes, infringements of which were accompanied by strict penalties. Clerical and secular dignitaries, for example, had the exclusive right to wear red shoes, while lower social classes were prescribed brown or gray. In the Renaissance period, rulers wore extravagant footwear models with exceptionally long, raised toes, which demanded a particular gait and were therefore quite unsuitable for everyday wear. Their function was primarily symbolic and due the connotations of their shape they provoked for a long time the disfavor of the clergy. For centuries, Chinese women had their feet disfigured so they could wear shoes that made walking impossible. The wearing of excessively narrow shoes cannot here be explained merely by vanity alone. It would certainly be possible to speak of Chinese men’s fetishism, but even in the patriarchal society of ancient China it was hardly possible that a man could compel a woman to

poškozování vlastních chodidel, kdyby nebyla sama přesvědčena o kulturní hodnotě tohoto jednání. Silný komunikační potenciál bot nenalézáme pouze v minulosti, potvrzují jej i některé současné studie. Současně ovšem nese i významná neverbální a symbolická sdělení.

the painful disfigurement of her own feet if she were not herself convinced of the cultural value of such an act. We can find the powerful communicative potential of shoes not only in the past; it is also confirmed by some contemporary research. For example, a recent psychological study by researchers from the University of Kansas states that people are capable of correctly deducing from examining the shoes of an unknown person (their style, probable price, color, condition etc.) 90% of that person’s characteristics, whether age, gender, income level, political opinions or psychological features. Some conclusions are not very surprising: expensive shoes belong to people with high incomes, colorful shoes to extroverts and shoes that are not new, but look new, to conscientious, thorough people. Other conclusions, however, are less selfevident: practical, functional shoes are worn by people who are kind and helpful, ankle boots by more aggressive people and shoes that look uncomfortable are chosen by people who are serious, calm and quiet. According to the study, the newest, best cared-for shoes belong to those who are most concerned about their relationships, while on the contrary, people who consider themselves incapable of establishing relationships wear shoes that are boring. Footwear unquestionably serves its primary practical function – that of protecting the human foot. Simultaneously, however, it also carries important non-verbal and symbolic messages. Shoes are a mundane thing, of course. But perhaps it is for that very commonplaceness that people understand their secret language so uncommonly well.

Různé druhy židlí a křesel je možné uspořádat podle chronologie jejich vzniku, aby vytvořily časovou osu, sled směrů a stylů, akademické dějiny designu. Jako alternativa se nabízí anachronický postup. Zinscenování svérázné designové krajiny, v níž se budou kontrastně střetávat kusy nábytku, pocházející z odlišných časů, plnící různé funkce a disponující rozmanitými tvary.

Various types of chairs and armchairs may be arranged in the chronological order of their appearance in order to create a time axis, a sequence of trends and styles, an academic history of design. Alternately, an anachronous approach may be taken: the staging of a distinctive design landscape in which pieces of furniture from disparate periods, fulfilling different functions and having multifarious shapes encounter each other contrastingly. In the 1980s, Milena Lamarová proposed a highly metaphorical version of a similar approach – she imagined a “chairological garden”, a zoo for chairs populated by examples of the diverse realm of animated furniture. The immutable “properties” imprinted by designers on their products became variable “natures” according to which the inhabitants of the chair zoo behaved arbitrarily. With their caprices, they act out in the metaphoric landscape of design a series of postmodern micro-narratives. While the representatives of more modest furniture designed to fit contextually into the relevant interiors behave like a herd of animals huddled together in inconspicuous groups, the distinctive, solitary pieces stroll independently across the peaks of the rolling design landscape, proudly looking around the environment. Lamarová proposed a key to an ahistoric reading of design and to its intuitive classification, which can be helpful in viewing students’ work that it would be premature to place in academic history. Following an unequivocal end-of-term assignment to design a rocking chair, a series of heterogeneous “life forms” emerged, among which it might be possible with Lamarová’s assistance to identify the most distinctive “individual”. If the theme of Jakub Pollág’s work is contrast, then it is a contrast that is played out on several levels. Firstly, it is removed from the convention of rocking chairs, the standard appearance of which is derived form the attachment of rockers to a static chair. In place of this established scheme, which was employed by most of his fellow students, Pollág returned to the simple principle of the swing and fixed the moving seat of his chair on a fixed axis.
Kontrastují tvarem i materiálem. Označuje místo kontrastního střetu a zároveň osu houpání, a poukazuje tím k funkci předmětu. Pollágovo křeslo by si sebevědomým, originálním pojetím a záměrným kontrastem k tradici zřejmě vysloužilo přirovnání k zvířeti dravějšímu než žirafa a v krajině designu by zaujalo důstojné postavení.
Even more so than in his opposition to tradition, he applied a contrasting solution in the design itself. The chair is composed of two parts that are delineated in counterpoint to each other. They contrast in shape and in material. Attached to a metal base designed on precise geometry is a leather seat, the organic shape of which traces the lines of the human body. The intersection of the two parts may, in its precisely aesthetic resolution, be perceived on closer inspection as the signature or graphic logo of the product. It marks the point of contrasting encounter as well as the axis of the rocking motion, and thereby draws attention also to the function of the object. This self-referentiality accentuates its particularity and independence from predecessors in the typological category of rocking chairs. Let us return to the landscape of animated design, as dreamt up by Lamarová, and try to imagine how Pollág’s chair would behave in it and what name it would be given. Following the example of the poet Christian Morgenstern and his “new names proposed for nature”, Lamarová thought up for the inhabitants of the chair zoo apt neologisms. “Chairaffe”, something between a chair and a giraffe, labeled a seat with a high backrest as long as a giraffe’s neck. Pollág’s chair, with its self-confident, original concept and deliberate contrast with tradition would evidently deserve comparison with an animal more ferocious than the giraffe and would adopt a distinguished position in the landscape of design.

Současná historie umění nevysvětluje obdobné stylové projevy v různých evropských zemích a městech jednotným „duchem doby“, ale významnou roli připisuje vybudování husté a efektivní železniční sítě. V roce 1943 vypracoval pozdější pedagog a rektor Vysoké školy uměleckoprůmyslové Pavel Smetana studii pražské severojižní transverzály, v níž doporučoval svést povrchovou dopravu do tepny, která by protínala celé město. V rámci studie vznikl i návrh na novou výpravní budovu Hlavního nádraží, kterou Smetana radikálně koncipoval jako asymetrickou organicky tvarovanou skořepinu. Vzhledem k tradici československé architektury bezprecedentní návrh měl fakticky i symbolicky nahradit stávající budovu. Když se stejnou oblastí zabýval v letech 1976–1977 Karel Prager, rozhodl se původní budovu naopak zachovat. Koleje navrhl svést do tunelu a vzniklou volnou plochu zastavět a přitom zde aplikoval svoji koncepci superstruktur. Jeho vize architektury vyzdvižené nad zemský povrch nechávala volný parter, reagovala na výškový zlom mezi nádražím a sousedními Vinohrady a umožňovala

Not only trains arrive at train stations; information has also flowed along the tracks into important railway centers, among other things information regarding the latest architectural styles, which thus acquired international significance. Contemporary art history does not explain the appearance of similar stylistic manifestations in various European countries and towns as a unified „spirit of the times”, but ascribes a significant role to the development of a dense, effective railway network. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the spread of the then modern Art Nouveau style was surprisingly consistent with the rail network map. Trains were not only a symbol, but also an actual vehicle of modernism, and the station the gateways through which it triumphantly passed. It was in that very Art Nouveau style that the new terminal building of Prague Main Railway Station was erected at the beginning of the 20th century. Although it has been preserved to this day, it has been virtually concealed by a series of radical modifications. In 1943, the then lecturer and later Rector of AAAD, Pavel Smetana, carried out a study of the Prague North-South rail link, in which he recommended routing surface traffic into an arterial cutting through the whole city. In connection with the study, a design was also created for the new terminal building of the Main Railway Station, which Smetana conceived radically as an asymmetric, organically shaped shell. With regard for the tradition of Czechoslovak architecture, the unprecedented design was to replace the existing building both physically and symbolically. When Karel Prager dealt with the same subject in 1976–1977, he decided, on the contrary, to preserve the original building. He proposed routing the tracks through a tunnel and building on the resulting free space, while applying his concept of superstructures there. His vision of an architecture raised above the surface of the Earth left an open parterre, reacted to the difference in elevation between the station level and adjacent Vinohrady and allowed for flexibly innovating the interior layout within the permanent structure according to requirements. It is no coincidence that it was the Main Station
A železniční nádraží často přijímala radikální formy nejaktuálnějších architektonických směrů, aby reprezentovala vyspělost příslušných měst a důležitou roli železnice v zajištění této vyspělosti. Do takové rovnice můžeme připočíst i experimentální práci Martina Ptáčníka.
in Prague, as well as the category of railway station architecture in general, which became a focal point for architectonic experimentation. The symbiosis between modern architecture and rail travel was a mutual one. The avantgarde architects were inspired by the romantic aesthetic of the locomotive as well as the spacesaving furnishing of the train compartments, which served them as an example in designing minimal apartments with functionally built-in furniture. And train stations, in turn, often adopted the radical forms of the latest architectural trends in order to represent the advancement of the given town and the important role of the railway in its progress. When a passenger stepped off a train, he could sense at first glance what a modern environment he had arrived in. If trains not only symbolized modernity in the Industrial Age, but actually “transported” it to less developed areas of Europe, then in postindustrial or information society the situation is changing. The speed of trains has fundamentally fallen behind the instant delivery of information, but even in that process the train station has not lost its role. Even though it no longer acts as the „engine“ of modernization, it has at least preserved a symbolic function. Railway stations are still being designed by renowned architects according to up-to-date concepts and trends. The latest information no longer arrives along the tracks; the station is disconnected from the flow, but it still symbolizes the progressiveness and advancement of the city by its forward-looking architectonic form. Apart from the contemporary appearance of Prague Main Railway Station, it is possible to perceive the site as a virtual set of radical, but unrealized designs for its conversion. We can also add to the equation the experimental work of Martin Ptáčník, derived from an analysis of the structure of diseased bone tissue, which does not correspond quite sovereignly to the typological category of railway station architecture. In the context of the preceding examples, however, it is not entirely coincidental that he has applied his research in particular to Prague Main Railway Station.

Numerous earlier and contemporary theoretical critiques of fashion and dress perpetuate the semiotic viewpoint of Roland Barthes and examine fashion as a text that can be read. Such a reading is possible via an analysis of social and cultural forces contributing to displaying the body by means of codes that are normative from the perspective of race, class and gender. In the contrary case, textual analysis of fashion may focus on an intentional rejection of normative codes, on a subversive deviation from expectations regarding appearance. In neither case is fashion a material product; its value is symbolic, socially construed and abstract. As a counter-argument to these considerations, some theorists judge that the semiotic or discursive analysis neglects the material dimension that fashion and dress contain. The fashion theorist Joanne Entwistle, referring to the sociology of the body and the phenomenological thinking of Maurice MerleauPonty, points out that semiotic interpretations of fashion push to the background its bodily and sensual aspects: “Dress is the way in which individuals learn to live in their bodies and feel at home in them. In this respect, dress is both an intimate experience of the body and a public presentation of it.” Because dress is located at the exact interface between our bodies and the external world, it is simultaneously also a site of conflict between the personal and the public: in everyday life it “is an intimate aspect of the experience and presentation of the self and is so closely linked to the identity that these three – dress, the body and the self – are not perceived separately.” Fashion, therefore, in the sense outlined above is not just sign-forming, but also physical and material. The exclusive analysis of fashion as a text neglects the personal, sensual experience of the clothed body coming into contact with other clothed bodies. Physical experience also sidelines other specifics that usually accompany reflections on fashion and dress, i.e. the almost exclusive prioritizing of vision before the other senses. Interpretations traditionally accent visual characteristics and the predominant mode of reading the clothed body is the optical view. Such a body has in the

Věnovat důkladnou pozornost smyslovým a fyzickým kvalitám oděvu a módy je zcela přirozené pro módní návrháře, nikoli však pro interprety, kteří chápou odívání jako text a analyzují jej v prvé řadě pohledem. optical field defined boundaries; the spectator is removed from it, and the mental projection into the fashion object does not have a physical character. The other sensory characteristics remain as a rule unnoticed, whether the haptic impression from touch, sound, scent or taste. But what does fashion sound like? What do the rustling of an organdie dress in a church nave, the clicking of heels on stone paving or the tinkling of jewelry on a briskly waving wrist reveal to us? And what is clothing like to touch? The skin is our body‘s largest organ; it allows us to judge pressure, temperature, pain, position. What special impulse does our skin receive when it is touched by a material with unexpected properties? What does dress say and in what way does it communicate with us when it is in direct contact with the person wearing it and with his or her momentary environment? Dress can be listened to, it can be smelled, it can be investigated at length by the papillae on the fingertips. Paying close attention to the sensory and physical qualities of dress and fashion is quite natural for the fashion designer, but not for an interpreter who perceives clothing as text and analyzes it primarily by means of vision. A refined message may, after all, be hidden beyond the field of vision, in the peculiar constellations of unexpected sensory perceptions.

Jakub Spurný AM ilustrovaná abeceda AM Ilustrated Alphabet
text Pavla Pauknerová
„Co znamená AM?“ My jsme luštili pořadí písmen tisíckrát před tím, ale Benny to neznal.

“What does AM mean?” Gorrister answered him. We had done this sequence a thousand times before, but it was Benny's favorite story. “At first it meant Allied Mastercomputer, and then it meant Adaptive Manipulator, and later on it developed sentience and linked itself up and they called it an Aggressive Menace, but by then it was too late, and finally it called itself AM, emerging intelligence, and what it meant was I am ... cogito ergo sum ... I think, therefore I am.” AM is the name of a supercomputer created for military purposes during the Cold War and later used to generate military strategies during the Third World War, a war that was big, absolute and final. AM had originally been Chinese, Russian or Yankee. But then, “one day AM woke up and knew who he was, and he linked himself, and he began feeding all the killing data, until everyone was dead...”, that is, except for the last five human protagonists of Harlan Elisson’s short story “I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream”, first published in 1967 in the magazine If: Worlds of Science Fiction. AM is also the title of Jakub Spurný’s illustrated alphabet, which was created in the spring semester of 2013 in the Font and Typography Studio for the sci-fi short story anthology Dangerous Visions, compiled by the above-cited author also in 1967. Elisson’s story is bleak. AM is the sovereign lord of a post-apocalyptic, depopulated wasteland and is far removed from a neutral data-processing instrument. “His” discourse is decidedly not logical, and for that all the more sadistic. His greatest pleasure is derived from human pain, whether physical or psychological in nature. AM keeps the group of five selected people for more than a hundred years in a state of artificial immortality in order to incessantly torment and degrade them. The neurological suffering and biological and physical deprivation of the characters is transmitted also to the reader, because the story is unpleasant through and through. The AM alphabet develops this level even further. In his commentary, Jakub Spurný writes: “The individual letters arise from
a combination of science, technology and man. They are full of printed circuits, cells, bones, anatomical drawings, technical blueprints, astral objects, galactic bodies and other shapes. The combination of elements from which the font is composed outline, by means of its content, the dangerous consequences of artificial intelligence, dark Utopian visions and a black future.” From the original sober, harmless scientific drawings, pseudo-systematic clusters (letters) emerge, which bear the same elements of irrationality, willfulness and malign obstinacy that characterize the malevolent behavior of AM described above. The letters here successfully play their historically anchored role: they serve as a means of navigation through text that does not only have a functional character (marking the beginning of sentences, paragraphs, sections, chapters etc.), but also a signifying function. They constitute a visual pointer suggesting the possible content and its possible reading. They function as an expressive medium that accentuates the text by another level. In the case of these initials, the references do not have the character of narrative representation; they do not directly suggest how the story might further develop. They are, rather, an additional mode of disclosure. In the case of the AM illustrated alphabet, the layers of meaning are also multiplied quite outside the field of typography. As the author of the alphabet, Jakub Spurný, points out: “Due to the complexity of its bit character, the alphabet is at the very boundary of the technical possibilities of a TrueType font, as it is at the boundary of science and fiction.” The complexity of the alphabet overexerts the average text editor, puts it out of commission and triumphs over it by its own means. In printing, a letter may sometimes randomly disappear; the letters willfully abandon the space of the page, or, on the contrary, infiltrate it. Although this was evidently not the original intention, in a certain sense it mirrors the conclusion to Elisson’s short story, which bears very deceptive signs of a happy end. The narrator realizes in a flash the only possible

way out of the protagonists’ common situation: to kill the others before AM gets a chance to register his actions. He then survives, with no concept of time, in a form no longer human, quite at the mercy of AM and its unclear malevolent motives. He has, however, released the others from their infinite suffering, opened a crack in AM's apparent omnipotence, revolted against the defined dictate and in some unfortunate way has triumphed. Just as Spurný’s alphabet revolts against the technological framework for which it was created, so does Elisson’s narrator revolt against the situation in which AM has placed him. It is extremely graceful and apt that this resonance occurs via the particular means of the illustrated alphabet. Decorated initials have been a site of echoes of meaning for centuries: they reveal what is concealed in words and what is concealed behind them, they prompt, they indicate possible paths or, on the contrary, close others. They are illustrations, but they are also comments. Spurný’s alphabet is incontestably very rich visually, and even more so in content. The archaic medium that the illustrated initial constitutes, therefore, somewhat paradoxically fulfils its age-old function by means of a solution that is far from archaic, which is built on a skeptical vision of our technological future.

Vedle odlévání do betonu, ohně a dalších destruktivních prostředků zbývá úspornější a konstruktivnější cesta. Pouhým pohledem do firemního sortimentu vybrat základní tvar kruhu z ohýbaného dřeva a po vzoru asistovaných ready-mades ho jednoduchým gestem přemístit z horizontální do

The elegant lines of the famous Thonet no. 14 chair became one of the founding “texts” of modernism. If we wanted literally to approach such a metaphor more closely, suffice it to take a look at the work of the Swiss conceptualist Philippe Decrauzat, who dismantled the chair into its individual components – seat, backrest, legs etc. – and cast them in concrete. He scattered some of the casts around the floor of the gallery, turning it into an archaeological site of modernist fragments, and from others he constructed configurations of various inscriptions. The round seat represented “O”, the slightly bent leg “I” and a combination of other shapes the remainder of the alphabet. By means of bending wood, Thonet created curves that have so intrinsically established themselves in the history of design that it is possible to “write” using them. There exists an infinite number of such “texts”. From various types of post-production, appropriation, variations and deconstructions, Thonet chairs became almost an independent genre, which numerous authors concern themselves with in the present. Their work also results in new fields of operation that do not respect any boundary between design and fine art. The Thonet chair has gone through fire (Maarten Baas), been dismantled and reassembled into hybrid configurations (Martino Gamper), complemented with contrasting, “nonmodernist” forms (Alessandro Mendini) or, on the contrary, deprived of one leg, the removal of which referred to the “limping” or “invalidity” of modernism (Michal Brix). What next? Is it possible for students of AAAD to add something new to such “operations”? Leaving aside casting in concrete, burning and other destructive means, there still remains a more economical, less destructive route: by simply looking through the company’s collection, selecting the basic shape of a circle of bent wood and, following the example of assisted readymades, turning it with a simple gesture from a horizontal to a vertical position and fixing it to a wall to transform it into a surprisingly functional coat hanger. Minimal means achieve maximum effect. Apart from the practical

Rafinovaná jednoduchost přináší i další významy.
function, by reference to the tradition of the famous firm it also fulfils a symbolic function. When the coat is removed, a minimalistic, empty circle remains on the wall, which may serve as a geometric decoration or a company logo. The refined simplicity also brings other meanings. Thonet’s chair is not important for the harmonious composition of its component parts alone, but also for its method of advertising and distribution. Its easy disassembly into several small parts created the impression of an effective trick and facilitated effective transport. When one of these parts is ascribed an independent role, it draws attention to this principle compactness of the Thonet chair. Due to this quality alone it can be subjected to infinite postproductions, be broken down from the constant form of an elegant artifact into arbitrary variations, and function as a system, a structure or a text.
