SUPERIMPOSED ENVIRONMENTS
A new booklet with the promising title ‘Superimposed Environments’ has now been realised with text and illustrations. Once again, an attempt is made to present the project to you by means of this edition. The theme we have selected for the coming period is ‘Texture’ for which we have invited the painter Joost Verhagen whose art corresponds in a special way with our concept of this theme. He shows us fragments of human environments, such as bridges, squares and town districts. His manner of painting shows a literal layering which turns a static surface explicitly into a dynamic one. His work does not reflect reality, but springs from his memory, which offers an attentive viewer the possibility to put his own interpretation on it. The way in which he opts for a specific cut of an image is consistent, but at the same time intuitive. What touches him most deeply, where does the choice evoke the most intensely felt sensation, wherein does he recognize his own recollections, what makes him find the answer to his question to the painting. The explicit form makes it somewhat easier; the square functions as a frame for the eye and soul and reflects to the maker what is important. In this aspect lies the recognition for the viewer; only those that enter intensely into it will have a similar experience. In the end it is of no consequence whether or not we can recognize the works; Joost Verhagen may be recognized by the answer of the painting.
At least as far from what we experience as reality we find the subject of Henk van Leeuwen: an omnipresent computer, visible or invisible. The question is whether this is what we want, for there are more invisible things in our lives that we would not like to do without. But what are we to think about delivering ourselves up to this sort of environment, known as ‘ambient intelligence’ ? Will matters like individuality, originality or self-awareness still be relevant? How do we deal with the things that are presented to us as technological progress? Plenty of material for an exciting discussion for which we, the working party, thank the artist and the scientist. I would like to extend my personal thanks to Andries Lohnmeijer and Els Louwerens who have to a large extent carried and planned this project.

De computer verdwijnt, de omgeving wordt slim
The computer on its way out, the environment becomes smart
Using colour, texture and form, the artist Joost Verhagen represents environments in a manner entirely his own. With his works of art he is able to evoke thoughts and feelings in the attentive viewer. The concept of ‘ambient intelligence’ also deals with environment, but in the sense of a smart environment, alert to the presence of people and able to respond to their needs and desires. By way of illustration a brief description is given of how, throughout the centuries, man has adjusted the environment he lives in and how a smart environment may react to people. The notion of ‘smart’ will be clarified, as will the technology making this possible by asking questions such as “How do people experience the ‘intelligent’ environment and what ethical dilemmas present themselves?”

Throughout history man has intervened in his environment in a very creative manner. In particular static objects, such as knolls, houses, roads, dikes and water mains were introduced. There was a need for safe places to live and for passable roads to traverse the country with cattle, merchandise or armies. Houses protected people against inclement weather and offered comfort. People have always depended on each other and so hamlets, villages and towns were built and property limits demarcated. Apart from these static elements, dynamic elements were added to the environment, made possible by the technical developments of the 19th and 20th centuries. Dynamic means: reacting to events or certain situations, such as protected level crossings and thermostats to monitor the heating systems. At the beginning of the 21st century this development continues. In the physical environment systems are installed that are virtually invisible but that can form an image of what is going on. Who is present, what is that person doing, what are his needs and feelings? Because the observations are linked with information about the person and his habits, preferences, health and activities, awareness is created of the context in which people live and work. Context awareness comprises information about devices available to support the person in his activities and intentions. On the basis of context awareness the environment can adapt itself to further the quality of life, job satisfaction and comfort. In order to realize ambient intelligence it is necessary for the environment to react to or interact with human beings. It must be possible for the environment to adapt itself dynamically in such a way that one experiences this as natural and intuitively understandable. Numerous factors, such as lights, sound, music and spoken text play a part in this. By the same token, images, video or texts appearing on fabrics and screens, projected on walls, floors or windows. Think also of the use of smells and the many personal gadgets people carry with them, e.g. smart phones. These devices can communicate among themselves as well as with the environment. Four important questions come to the fore when dealing with concepts like smart and intelligent. The first question concerns the interpretation of an observation made by a computer. How can it construct an image of the environment so that context awareness arises? In the first place, an analysis will have to be made that takes recognized possibilities and their characteristics into account. Further information on the environment and people is also included in this. Consider the example of a calamity in a complex building where many people are present who want to leave the building safe and sound. It is necessary to know beforehand which parts of the building are unsafe, where people with or without physical limitations are present, which escape routes are safe. Subsequently, what possible alarm system, signposting and communication facilities are available and are they in working order.

The second question deals with the reasoning process which, based on the image that has emerged from the situation, decides which reaction in the environment it evokes and which interaction is initiated. What is the intended purpose? During the assessment uncertainties come into play and the best option must be chosen. In the above example the point is to determine a safe escape route for everybody, including people in wheelchairs. The third question concerns the how of the reaction. Presentation plays an important role in acceptation and effectiveness. A choice will be made from a range of adaptation possibilities, whereby preferences and limitations of the person involved may be taken into account. One option could be a dynamic indication of escape routes via arrows on walls or floors, closing off corridors that go in a dangerous direction, adjusting the lights, giving instructions through loudspeakers, screens or smart phones. Understanding of the effectiveness and feasibility of the reactions may be obtained from drills and the feedback of users. Questions number four asks “How can an environment function as an intelligent learning system?” If this is possible, the question immediately arises as to whether an environment can anticipate human needs and Embedding Devices are integrated invisibly in your environment. can act not only reactively, but also proactively. All this Context awareness The environment recognizes you can be summarized in a generic diagram, an extended verand your specific circumstances. sion of the sense-think-act paradigm.

The computer on its way out It may be sufficiently clear that there have been and will be numerous technological developments that make a smart environment possible. The main aspect is that computer technology has turned out to be so fundamental that it merges into the matters of our daily lives and is no longer noticed as something that distinguishes itself from those matters. This high degree of miniaturisation has been made possible by the development of micro and nano electronics. Another development is that a computer used to be characterised specifically as a metaphor for brains: computers were able to think, calculate and possessed a memory. The trend of the past ten years has also given computer technology ears, eyes and other senses - sensors -, a mouth symbolic of communication and arms and legs - actuators - in order to be able to do things in the physical world. As smart environments are developed further, we will be confronted with more than just technical challenges. Of importance is especially how people will appreciate these environments. Will the technology indeed be used in such a transparent manner that people will intuitively understand what is happening? Will the environment really be so empathetic that feelings are recognized and taken into account? Does the smart environment indeed evoke feelings of safety and comfort or quite the reverse, will we get annoyed because we think we are no longer in control of the environment? Designers still have a long way to go to organize environments in such a way that independent people feel at home in them. It is therefore of prime importance to allow people from the outset to participate in the thinking and decision making process with

regard to the smart arrangement of their environment and to give them a taste of it, especially now that people are developing different lifestyles, are becoming more r mobile, are often on the move, and find themselves in different environments all Processo Radio Memory the time. Many people are terribly busy, how do they communicate with each other? What do they expect in the way of comfort when they come home after a busy working day? With a view to a greying population, how can smart technology be used to Sensor r increase the independence and better the quality of life, so that there is less loneliPower Actuato ness and the feeling of security increases? If in all those different environments sensors are embedded that observe us, what will happen with all that information obtained about us in this way? This is already an issue on the World Wide Web, Intelligent systems need a Brain, but they also need Ears, Eyes, Arms and Legs. where people leave numerous digital traces. Is this information published with their Figuur 5: More than Moore (naar ENIAC (2007)). (Bron: Eniac) consent? Are confidential matters properly safeguarded on the net? Are smart environments protected against this potentially ‘dark’ side? Another ethical aspect, trust, concerns the question if we can rely on the integrity of the smart environment. Think of matters such as the identification of individuals, interpretation of language, feelings, intentions. What will the consequences be if the system makes mistakes that lead to incorrect actions that may inflict harm or injury on people?

More than Moore
It is clear that from the initial development of concepts for ambient intelligence all these ethical aspects have to be taken into account. If these aspects remain a focus of attention, in a free and respectful way, a lot of misery would be precluded. If not, environments may be created in which people will no longer feel at home. Technological developments often seem to be an autonomous process. The advance cannot be stopped, but developments can be channelled. Beautiful things can be realized if integrity and human dignity are our beacons. Beautiful in the sense of a kind of intrinsic beauty: technology remains fascinating. But also beautiful in the sense that people get enjoyment from it.

At the age of ten I observed The Jewish Bride by Rembrandt. That painting moved me beyond words, how I did not realize but it felt great. At that moment I guess, I decided to be an artist, rather then becoming an artist. Some suited guys in front of the painting were bragging about a fine “impasto”. But I was thinking: “Piss off, you block my sight”. An ordinary boy at that age is not likely to remember the word “impasto”, but obviously I did. I love painting. I am fascinated by everyone drudging with canvas, paint and brushes. But I can only appreciate video installations or video art presented by exceptional talented artists. There is a lot of clumsy painting that is worth watching. My goal is to move people with my paintings. Once I observed a Belgian giant shedding tears in front of my “Rijswijkseplein”. It suffices to know that I was able to affect just a single person in such a way Rembrandt did to me as little boy.
Oliver Sacks states in his book “The Mind’s Eye” that we cannot see without visualisation. Everybody creates his own visual library that facilitates visualisation of what the eye sees. In my opinion an artist should persue work that triggers the visual library in different ways. So, if that Belgian recognises Libanon in my Rijswijkseplein painting, he is right without doubt. The danger of explaining your work is, that every description becomes explicit. Despite the fact that you perceive the work different the next day. It is not the painting that changes, but I am changing. I may suggest my “Malieveld” is about the longing of a little boy, living in the country, for the excitement of a big town. Likewise it could be a personal retrospective of a vivid past. Oliver Sacks postulates that one sees through the eye, by the brain. With intense concentration I create my paintings from memory. I am conscious of every step I take but I think just one stroke ahead. During this process the image may choose an intended direction, which finally will lead to new understanding. “Failure is an option” certainly applies to my drudging. Soccer Guru Johan Cruijff would say: “Good painting is transforming accidents into lucky events”. Afterwards I can state that Malieveld is about desire, that is my actual perception. After the last stroke on the canvas I am considered spectator as well. A painting has many truths, for each a private truth!

DE SchIlDER jOOST VERhaGEN
ThE PaINTER jOOST VERhaGEN
At first sight the paintings of Joost seem to be abstract images. But soon elements of landscape reveal themselves to the spectator. Looking thoroughly, these elements turn to be absorbed in an abstract space again. They are empty spaces, existing on their own, not needing anything more. His preference for the square canvas as basic shape seems to be a statement. His landscapes are built up in layers. He’s processing pieces of pictures, which he covers with paint, or makes them appear on the surface. The painting gains depth, and so, literally gets his own past.
As resident of The Hague I recognize many of the locations Joost depicted. In my perception he plays with the past and the future, memory and the threat of future decline. He places me on the only spot I occupy in time and space: Between my memory (which I tend to embellish a bit) and the future, which intrinsically incorporates the end. Exact on that intersect he moves me deeply. The only thing I can do: Stand still and look.
