PHD DISSERTATION THESIS
EMESE SZARKA A STUDY OF THE MECHANISM OF ACTION OF A QUASISUBCULTURE: SILVA MIND CONTROL
Supervisor: Prof. György Mikonya
Budapest 2011
1
Rationale for Choosing the Topic My thesis is concerned with studying the Hungarian version of the Silva Mind Control (SMC) method developed by Jose Silva. In Hungary, neither research studies nor educational innovation attempts have as yet focused on Silva Mind Control, either as a method for developing the mind and coping with stress or as a movement bearing characteristics typical of New Religious Movements (NRM). As regards foreign findings (mostly from English and German speaking countries), research, largely instigated by Silva International, Inc., has mostly focused on one of two major issues. One is the relation of Mind Control to health, while the other, less studied field is the effect of Mind Control on performance in learning (DeSau, 1974). It appears, however, that research on the latter question came to a halt in the 1980’s. Aside from (neuro)psychological studies, no pedagogical surveys have been carried out. Hungarian educators who complete one of the available accredited postgraduate courses and employ the things learned there in actual practice, do not have a community space or forum where they could find guidance relevant to the principal educational and developmental objectives, tasks, areas, methods and means applicable to various types of students. In order to gain more knowledge about Silva Mind Control as a field that is yet to be reaped by educational science, empirical studies must inevitably be performed. My research is intended as a preliminary examination in this direction.
Research Objectives My research was of a complex nature, but essentially focused on educational science, with the following objectives: 1. to analyse Silva Mind Control, a system generally classified as a New Religious Movement in international publications but
2
regarded merely as a method in Hungary, and thereby to determine its position in the network of New Religious Movements and subcultures; and 2. to enhance and extend the first exploration with didactic considerations relevant to educational science. Thus the principal objective of my research is to analyse the available information on Mind Control and closely related training courses using the approach of educational science.
Research Questions, Course of Study Disciplinary Approach The theoretical background to my research is comprised of four scientific fields. Three of these are dedicated to the study of the role of religion, including NRM-s in particular cases: Religious Studies (C. G. Jung, S Grof, A. Vergote, Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, S. Murken, neuropsychology and neurotheology), Sociology of Religion (Miklós Tomka, E. Durkheim, B. Wilson, D. Martin, G. Davie) and Religious Pedagogy (László Lukács, Géza Boross). The fourth discipline is Educational Science, a field in which no studies concerned with the educational concepts and methods of a particular religious movement are as yet available.
Definition of Research Problems 1. SMC is a quasi-religious movement and a quasi-subculture that can be classified as a NRM. 2. The practice of SMC brings the individual closer to God or to spirituality, irrespective of religious denomination. 3. Armed with spiritual knowledge, SMC practitioners become more efficient learners compared to their learning achievements prior to learning and using SMC.
3
My research sought clarification of the relationship between SMC and learning/teaching: What elements of learning/teaching methodology are typical of the training in Mind Control, Learning Control, PhotoReading Whole Mind System and Nonviolent Communication courses? What changes have the research subjects experienced in their learning/teaching processes after completing a SMC course? As regards religion/faith in God, I sought answers to the following questions: What is the subjects’ attitude to religion and God? How do they view SMC relative to religions? Do they feel that becoming SMC-ers was a conversion? What changes have the subjects experienced in their lifestyle and religious experiences after completing a SMC course? The points of my content analysis also included the general perception of SMC: a) How do SMC instructors, SMC graduates and independent respondents interpret SMC and what do they think about it? b) What is their opinion of teaching SMC in schools and in teacher training, what results of SMC methods do they perceive in learning/teaching?
Research Methodology 1. Document Analysis (handbook for basic course and SMC for Children, publications on enhancing learning [6], website for SMC for Children instructors [13], mind maps from the Learning Control course [50]) 2. Semi-structured in-depth interviews (21 respondents, snowball sample) 3. Mind Map processing (software: E-draw) of the content analysis (software: MaxQda)

4. Combined questionnaire survey (127 and 805 respondents) 5. Participant observation: ethnographic fieldwork, reflective diaries

courses;
Processing methods: metaphor analysis, statistical analysis, excerpts, content analysis > Mind Map
Sample 1. Questionnaire survey: 932 subjects from a population of about 200 000. This sample is divided into 4 subsets corresponding to the parts of the research: a) teachers who have completed an SMC course: 33 b) students who have completed an SMC course: 57 c) parents of students who have completed an SMC course: 37 d) generic people who have completed an SMC course: 805 2. Ethnographic fieldwork, participant observation: Studying the work of a total of 4 SMC instructors with a total of 71 participants. 3. Semi-structured in-depth interviews, snowball sample of 21 respondents Subjects distributed among the following categories: SMC instructors: 7 SMC course graduates (non-instructor): 7 Independent respondents: 7
5
The number of respondents is purposefully even (7 in each category). Of the total 21 interview subjects, 9 were male and 12 were female. One interview of an average length of 90 minutes was conducted with each respondent. Due to a restriction of access to the data of SMC course graduates my research could not reach more of the base population or the subset of teachers (the Hungarian Mind Control organisation registered 3082 course participants with degrees in teaching since 2004, though some of these may be repeaters). Therefore I aimed to perform my investigations on a smaller sample, but in greater depth and with more points of study.
Thematic Points in the Qualitative Interview The semi-structured narrative interviews were conducted, analysed and interpreted with the following thematic points (categories) in mind: - experiences during the basic course, with particular focus on the experiences of day 4, - alpha state, relaxation, - faith in God, - perception of friends and relatives, - teaching experiences (of subjects who are teachers), - remarks and recommendations of pedagogical nature, - methods supplementary to SMC, - outstanding successes achieved with SMC, - definitions of SMC. Interviews were 90 minutes long on average; their analysis initially involved an independent coder.
6
Participant Observation Unconstrained, open and unstructured observations, with a total duration of about 60 hours. Points of observation: a) contents of the curriculum, b) atmosphere at the training, c) use of didactic methods, d) use of special SMC language by the instructor, e) the manifestation of teacher competences and the development of learning competence. Observation techniques: a) selective records, with verbatim manual notation of all verbal and non-verbal expressions deemed relevant; b) observation sheet, a form sheet based on those used in the analysis of teaching classes. Observations were recorded in reflective diaries and subsequently structured as Mind Maps.
Metaphor Analysis The collection of metaphors involved no particular devices; rather, I made use of the spontaneous utterances observed at the courses. I deem that metaphor and simile collection during participant observation is superior to a checklist or table choice questionnaire inasmuch as it does not limit free thought, but rather allows the spontaneous production of metaphors in natural context, and such metaphors can be expected to provide a subtler picture of the target concepts. With respect to SMC instructors, I studied the following target concepts: the brain, the alpha state, thought and thinking, self-confidence, attitude, communication, the teacher, learning with SMC, knowledge. The source concepts involved in the study were derived from the
7
direct primary (linguistic) metaphors produced by the course instructor.
Research Results Here follows an item by item summary of my partial results and my theses drawn up on their basis.
Problem definition: SMC is a quasi-religious movement and a quasi-subculture.
Thesis: it can be inferred from international publications that the Silva Mind Control Method is classified as a NRM.
Thesis: an analysis of publications shows that SMC is not clearly located in relation to the various concepts of a subculture. On the basis of the viewpoints expressed by others, I classify SMC as a movement that also exists and operates as a quasisubculture. Relationship between SMC and Learning Development – Combined Questionnaire Findings Statistical summary of respondents: total 127 persons, of which 21 (16.54%) were male and 106 (83.46%) female; average age: 39.36 years.
Hypotheses: 1. A higher proportion of students than parents or teachers will make use of memory pegs and mind mapping. 2. Visualisation will be the SMC technique most frequently used by all groups in their learning or work. 3. The use of SMC will produce distinctly greater
8

achievements, better concentration and creativity compared to non-SMC users in all three groups. The improvement of learning success, concentration and creativity due to SMC will be more prominent among students than among teachers and parents. SMC will produce significant changes in behaviour, learning achievements, purpose of life and health as compared to non-SMC users. SMC will enhance empathy in all three groups. SMC users consider themselves to be more open and accepting and better at problem solving than their nonSMC using peers. Among the causes attributed to school and workplace achievements, SMC will be significantly more prominent than other causes listed.
Theses 1-2: Since no significant differences between adults and students could be shown, my hypotheses have not been confirmed.
Thesis 3: I investigated 11 areas related to learning/work where I assumed changes would take place: memory, self-confidence, concentration, creativity, helpfulness, activity, diligence, independent learning, motivation, empathy, openness, esteemedness, good conduct and health. SMC has been shown to influence each of these factors in the positive direction. A Friedman test shows that the following factors change outstandingly as a result of the use of SMC: self-confidence, creativity and helpfulness. A chi-square test confirms that the difference between the groups is significant. Significant differences as shown by a Wilcoxon signed-rank test also confirm that the use of SMC leads in all three groups to a conspicuous improvement of learning/work achievement, concentration and creativity as opposed to non-SMC users.
9
Thesis 4: According to the Friedman test there is no difference between the increase of learning achievement among students and among teachers. Improved concentration is perceived to a greater degree by teachers and parents, while enhanced creativity was perceived to a greater degree by students. A comparison of the responses of students to those of the merged group of parents and teachers using the Mann-Whitney test has shown no significant difference.
Thesis 5: An analysis of the above factors in pairs by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the computation of correlation within each such pair also yields significant differences. The factors of good conduct, learning/work achievement and purpose of life stand out in that they show unambiguous and substantial increase in the greatest number of pairings, both with respect to significance of difference and to correlation. Thus, SMC brings about a significant change in conduct, learning achievement and purpose of life. No significant effect of SMC with respect to health has been found. A Mann-Whitney test to ascertain whether the responses of students are affected differently than those of other subjects (i.e. the merged group of parents and teachers) has shown no significant values.
Thesis 6: All three groups show a marked improvement in empathy due to SMC, as shown by significant differences in the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. SMC users consider themselves to be more open, more accepting and more efficient at problem solving than their nonSMC using peers. It can thus be concluded that changes attributed to SMC play a definitive role in the lives of those who have completed an SMC course. Aside from changes in attitude, they also attain more success in the performance in their studies and work.
Thesis 7: I examined the causes to which school and workplace success is attributed using a five-grade scale. I offered the
10
following factors as possible causes of success: the will of God; the help of God; my teacher/boss gave me easy problems/tasks; the effect of Mind Control; good luck; I was well prepared; I am clever; my classmates/colleagues helped; I cheated. The results of a Friedman test show that preparedness, perceived cleverness and the effect of SMC ranked higher on average in the three groups than other attributed causes. A chi-square test further shows significant difference between the groups. Significant differences in a Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirm that school/workplace success was attributed to a significantly greater degree to the effect of SMC than to the other causes listed. I offered the following factors as possible causes of failure: the will of God; the punishment of God; my teacher/boss gave me hard problems/tasks; I did not use Mind Control or did not use it correctly; bad luck; I was not properly prepared; I feel I do not have the required talent or intelligence; I relied on others; I cheated. The results of a Friedman test show that lack of preparedness and non-use or incorrect use of SMC ranked higher on average in the three groups than other attributed causes. A chi-square test further shows significant difference between the groups. Significant differences in ranks as shown by a Wilcoxon signedrank test confirm that school/workplace failure was attributed to a significantly greater degree to the effect of lack of SMC than to the other causes listed. Self-perception: How SMC Users Perceive Themselves Compared to Their Peers
Hypothesis If SMC users experience changes in their personality and performance due to SMC, then they will distinguish themselves
11
from non-SMC users, i.e. form a picture of the way they feel “better” than their peers.
Statements
54 students, 118 statements
32 teachers, 80 statements
34 parents, 57 statements
learning/teaching learns easier and /work faster: 17%
more effective in more positive teaching: 37% attitude: 21%
learning/teaching calmer, more /work self-confident: related 39%
more accepting, more empathic: 39%
more empathic Generic responses 13%
strives for constant selfmore betterment: 45% empathic: 9%
calmer: 35%
Thesis: Due to SMC, a) Students and teachers perceive themselves to be more effective in learning and teaching. b) Students and parents perceive themselves to be calmer and more self-confident in learning/work. c) All three groups have a feeling of being more empathic. Among adults the factors of self-betterment and a more positive attitude are also conspicuous.
12
Results of Participant Observation – Metaphor Analysis Based on Reflective Diaries SMC describes a specific process leading from correct learning to correctly applied knowledge. Target concepts: brain; alpha state; thought/thinking; attitude, self-confidence; communication; learning with SMC Source concepts: Brain – perform, store, execute. Alpha state – synchronise, receptive state, potentiality. Thought/thinking – create, control, vehicle, programming. Attitude, self-confidence – flexible, positive, responsible, solution-centred. Communication – empathic, confirmative, positive, telepathy, user-friendly application. Learning with SMC – setting of goals, visualisation, exercise, deductive method, techniques. The Relationship of Mind Control and Religion – Religious Elements in Mind Control
Problem definition: International publications classify the Silva Mind Control method as a NRM, more specifically most often as a New Age or psychogroup. The SMC organisation on the other hand distances itself from all religious descriptions. My research question was whether it is possible to point out any characteristics to indicate that SMC can be classified as a religious movement.
Thesis: Applying the Glock and Stark model to SMC it can be concluded that SMC is a quasi-religious movement.
13
Document Analysis Results
Problem definition 1: books published by the Hungarian SMC organisation (Agykontroll Kft.) claim that religion and Mind Control are compatible, while Problem definition 2: articles written by representatives of religious groups warn of the dangers of SMC. Thesis 1: The correspondence between meditation and prayer is central to all four texts. Some priests of various denominations strongly assert the view the practice of SMC can bring one closer to God.
Thesis 2: All four texts agree that the SMC method contradicts the Christian doctrine that God is not (only) within us and that we cannot acquire such creative powers as are exercised in SMC, since these belong to God. All four texts regard SMC as a component of New Age and claim that by its Gnostic teachings and techniques it opens the way for Satanic forces that generate a harmful influence on SMC practitioners. Results of the Combined Questionnaire Concerning Religion and Mind Control
Hypotheses 1. The role of faith and meditation will be important in the SMC experience of all three groups. 2. SMC users will have a positive view of life and perception of God due to their generally positive way of seeing and thinking.
Thesis 1: SMC depends on the three conditions of desire, belief and expectancy in order to “work.” All three proceed from one’s faith in oneself and in the possibility of achieving the chosen
14
objectives. Emotions play a crucial role in controlling desire and expectancy, and are enhanced by a state of relaxation or meditation. My results indicate that all three groups regard this helpful state of meditation to be the most important among the key dimensions of religion, while the groups differ significantly in their perception of the importance of faith and meditation in the experience of SMC.
Thesis 2: The respondents’ positive perception of the world and God correspond to the teaching of SMC which states that all individuals create their own reality according to their respective expectations. The basis of the subjects’ world view is a positive belief and expectancy with respect to God and good human nature. Results of the Questionnaire on the Relationship of SMC to Faith in God and Religion
Problem definition: In what way, if any, does a SMC basic course affect the participants’ religious life and their thoughts about and attitude to God or transcendence?
Thesis: The majority of respondents indicate that their preexisting faith in God/transcendence has become stronger and that SMC has brought to a closer, more personal and intimate relationship with God/transcendence. My findings indicate that SMC affects a person’s self-confidence, and this plays a crucial role in their attitude to God. Most people view SMC as a technique, but there is a small number of people for whom SMC is a religion or creed in itself.
15
Possible Reactions to a Crisis
Hypotheses 1. People choose to participate in a SMC course in order to overcome some kind of crisis. 2. Those who were struggling with a crisis before their SMC course will experience a change in their belief in God/transcendence as an effect of the course..
Thesis 1: My findings indicate that the choice to enrol in a course is largely a personal decision brought about by the force of self-motivation for change and advancement, though negative life events may be closely connected to such a decision. The majority (51.1%) answered that they joined a SMC course because of a crisis in their lives. 41% stated that they had had no crisis whatsoever, while 8% were undecided about whether or not they were experiencing a crisis before enrolling in a course.
Thesis 2: A Cramér’s test of contingency shows a significant association between whether or not a person’s decision to participate in a SMC course was motivated by a crisis and whether or not their faith in God/transcendence was altered after learning the SMC method. It can be concluded that those who joined a course in order to find help for solving a critical situation experienced a change in their faith in God/transcendence. Content Analysis of the Semi-Structured In-depth Interviews
Problem definitions: 1. How do SMC instructors, SMC course graduates and independent respondents interpret and assess SMC?
16
2. What do they think about teaching SMC in schools and in teachers’ postgraduate education, and what results do they feel SMC techniques may have in learning/teaching?
Thesis 1: All three groups agree in viewing SMC as a method, but their opinions about whether this method is compatible with science vary. SMC instructors and SMC course graduates classify SMC with neuro/psychosciences while the independent experts (psychologists and psychiatrists) express views varying widely from “entirely unscientific” to “part of the science of positive psychology.” The clearest definition of the purpose and possible results of SMC was (understandably) provided by SMC instructors. SMC graduates and independent respondents have provided additional details concerning relaxation. Independents and SMC graduates have found SMC highly successful in reducing stress. With the exception of SMC trainers, interview subjects strongly expressed their views concerning the critical points of SMC, namely the possibility of psychotic symptoms manifesting in the hypnosis-like SMC relaxation and the issue of control. Another point against SMC voiced repeatedly in various ways by all three groups was the question of how the method can be integrated with a person’s pre-existing religious views. This appears to be the least problematic for those SMC graduates (1/3 of this group) who are of a Buddhist persuasion. A significant proportion of the independent respondents have cited specific facts of their religion to assert that SMC contradicts the teachings of the Bible in several ways and should therefore be shunned.
Thesis 2: Those independent experts who had taken a clear position against SMC and described it as harmful, expressed the same view when asked about the possibility of introducing SMC to traditional schools.
17
The following mind map illustrates the points on which the greatest proportion of all three target groups agreed: critical remarks concerning the current state of school education in Hungary, and particular areas in which the introduction of SMC to public education or college/university education might be beneficial. The mind map shows points on which SMC instructors and SMC graduates agreed to the left of the commonly agreed points, and shows remarks made by two thirds of the independent experts on the right.

Pedagogical Indications, Considerations Questions for Educational Science
and
Open
1. Factors worthy of consideration Relaxation and imagination exercises in classes Enhancement of students’ self-confidence The reflective teacher A special picture of children – a special type of pedagogical work 2. Indicative factors What might relaxation bring to the surface? Irrational extras The other extreme: everyone is a genius Controlling Adherence to the technique Open questions, dilemmas (a) The way a teacher conducts a relaxation exercise matters. It is questionable whether anyone is suitable to conduct relaxation, and if not, what aspects qualify one for properly performing the task? (b) Can it provoke conflict in a school environment if a student who is a member of a NRM wishes to employ learning methods that the teacher finds objectionable and may not permit (e.g. relaxation, using mind maps for note taking, etc.)? How should the student and the teacher handle such a case properly? (c) What medical achievements of the neuro/psychosciences can our education system capitalise on? (d) Which elements of SMC are admissible to teacher training and which are not?
20
(e) What extreme cases are known where SMC techniques produced an unexpected result? How should these be interpreted and how could they be avoided? According to my conclusions based on my research results, any given special and complex social phenomenon will in due course generate various crisis situations. These crises in turn provoke diverse aiding and supporting responses which offer a wide gamut of combinations of possible remedies and will direct the individual along the path toward self-realisation. Aside from spiritual aspects, this path may yield an improvement of the individual’s methods of learning, teaching and general conduct in life. In this sense I consider SMC to be a quasi-religious movement that also exists and operates as a quasi-subculture and by offering alternative answers, provides a serviceable, practicable and effective arsenal of methods to a set of problems including those relevant to pedagogy. I view it as a movement that will remain in the fringe status of “quasi”-ness and “religious”-ness so long as the achievements of psychology, neurotheology and quantum physics have not been noticed and accepted to a much greater degree by a larger proportion of the scientific community.
