ÚVODEM The study material presented may also begin with the words “Once upon a time, there was a …,” which could probably make the reader think about adding the word “academic.” What is more, you – being the reader – could imagine that s/he would receive a call for paper, which would lead to his/her contemplation about how to write a proposal (or an abstract), also which steps to take in order to put the actual paper together, how to present it at an international conference, and, finally, proofread as well as edit it in order to make it publishable in English. Or, possibly, consider you would be a Ph.D. student whose aim is to make a summary of a recently written dissertation. Or maybe you are just supposed to produce an article for an acclaimed foreign journal. Try to put yourself in such academic’s shoes. Do the above mentioned activities await you? Does it actually happen to you to be challenged like this? If so, go through this study material. Simply because its aim is not only to provide you with a concise overview of topics related to academic writing, but also give you useful tips and practical advice. A “hands-on” approach will engage you in the process of academic writing so that you can act more confidently when it comes to, first, writing a piece of scholarly text and, second, presenting what you have written – all this paying attention to various differences between your mother tongue and English.

RYCHLÝ NÁHLED STUDIJNÍ OPORY The presented study material guides the course participants through the most significant topics related to academic writing in a practical way such as authorship, critical thinking, various types of academic texts, etc. More important, it takes a step by step approach to explaining the process of creating a piece of text, which consists of considering the target group, choosing a topic, writing a thesis statement and outline, making the first draft of an essays as well as rewriting it into the final one, presenting ideas, being familiar with various parts of an essay, writing an abstract, and so on. The course participants become also aware of the essential role coherence, cohesion, and consistency play in writing; proofreading and editing, which represent text revision, form a necessary part of the process too. Finally, they get the chance to present their research and findings and what they have written, being given an immediate feedback not only from the tutor but also other participants.
